¹ = Warm snacks are usually sold from vending machines which you have to open by pulling in order to grab the snack.
² = A borrel means any sort of drink at a party or the moment where people sit together on a terrace, for example, to have drinks and grab fried snacks.
³ = Gezelligheid is a typical Dutch word and it's hard to translate. It’s used to express that you had or are having a great time with somebody.

German here: typical Dutch is also the fact the houses or appartments barely have curtains closed, even on the ground floor, even if the window is right near the pavement where people walk by. That would give me anxiety
Oh wow, I didn't even notice that, but now when I think back to the houses in the Netherlands, this is so true! hahaha. And their windows are so big compared to our windows in Germany
I noticed this is Amsterdam. So many interiors on view. Fascinating!
Living here for 5 years, being married to a Dutchman, here are my 5 pennies worth: super organized, planners, down to earth, enjoying the little things, terrible drivers/amazing bikers, open minded, loyal, talking a lot about the weather, BBQ after 5 minute sunshine, proud of their country.
Foods the interviewees forgotten: haring, hutspot, oude kaas, kibbeling, boterham (which isn’t a Dutch invention, but they eat is often that it needs to be mentioned 😅).
As a proficient German speaker, it's crazy how much I understand. Appreciate the subtitles!

Ik heb op het Universiteit van Leuven, BE gestudeerd. There was someone in my class there who was fluent in German and he said the opposite. I took a German class previously and found the same.
They are very similar though: Germanic!
The Dutch are quite Deutsch
The language is similar to German, but that's about it. The mentality - as seen during corona - shows we are no family of each other, haha.

Klompen are still being worn by many people till this day and not just by farmers. City people are usually not very aware of anything outside of their city.
Would like to see some interviews in the country side. Mentality and way of life can differ a lot from province to province.

As a dutch learner, I find a bit difficulties to talk with nederlander, because so many peoples that I talk to is too direct. Me as an indonesian myself, I tend to talk a little bit more before we jump to a conclusion. Directness is consider rude in Indonesia so it’s quite challenging for me to fit with nederlander. But it’s fun to learn a new language and being in a new society, I feel that they’re just honest and didn’t like to wasting time and I like it ✨
For me being Dutch i have trouble with people from other cultures. Even in Belgium, which is only 2 hours by car from here, you never know what they really mean. But if you give it some time perhaps you will see that it's a practical thing, hope you get used to it!
You can be direct without being rude though. This is something a lot of people don't seem to comprehend.
Ik woon al 28 jaar in Nederland . ik ben turks-nederlands en heb hier nog nooit problemen met iemand gehad. Ze zeggen dat Nederlanders gierig zijn, maar ik denk niet dat ze gierig zijn :))) De Nederlandse keuken is zeer beperkt, maar er zijn veel verschillende restaurants in Nederland. Je kunt er allerlei soorten eten vinden. Nederlanders zijn over het algemeen goede mensen. leuke mensen. Vooral de reklame's en comedyprogramma's op Nederlandse zenders zijn erg grappig en zitten vol fijne grappen. en Nederland is een multicultureel land. Een klein en gezellig land waar mensen van alle kleuren wonen. Een goed land zonder financiële problemen. groetjes
Nouja, we zijn niet per sé "gierig" maar we zijn wel vaak zuinig. Of 'thrifty' in het Engels.
Dat we dingen pas wegdoen als ze uit elkaar vallen, zoals een oude vloerlap of een glazen potje of een balpen die het soms nog een beetje doet. We doen niet graag dingen zomaar weg als ze nog goed werken en we zien het weggooien van dingen die nog goed werken als heel erg zonde.

@@Widdekuu91 Plus, het is normaal om de kosten van een etentje of avondje stappen eerlijk te delen. Het komt minder vaak voor dat één persoon alles betaalt en het is ook niet onbeleefd om te vragen om kosten te delen. Ik weet niet of dat gierig is, maar ik kan me wel voorstellen dat het op buitenlanders gierig overkomt.

Belgen zijn ook zuinig hoor maar zijn bereid om veel geld uit te geven aan dingen waarvoor Nederlanders meer op bezuinigen of andersom.

I'm from South Africa, I had both German and Afrikaans (Zuid-Afrikaans) as subjects in school. I moved to Germany and lived in a town that bordered the Netherlands. It took me a month to fully understand dutch XD but me trying to speak dutch...my accent is so bad. My dutch friends say that I sound German when I speak Dutch :(
What I find typically dutch is definitely Drop, Matjes, Stampot and definitely borrelen with a snack platter :D
Just talk Afrikaans! It sounds cool and it is a challenge for us Dutchies to understand.

Kijk maar eens naar Zuid Limburg, ons Nederlands heeft een zachte g en geen rollende r. Het lijkt dus op Duits.

De Nederlandse keuken is zeer uitgebreid, maar we zijn het vergeten. We kennen heel veel gevogelte en wildgerechten, maar ook enorm veel visgerechten. Daarnaast zijn er heel veel Nederlandse groenten verdwenen.
De huishoudschool schijnt veel kapot gemaakt te hebben. Daar leerden de meisjes vooraleenvoudige goedkope gerechten. Kruiden en specerijen waren taboe. Dat zou hun toekomstige echtgenoot maar teveel "verhitten".

I'm currently learning German at school, in my free time, and at language lessons. I understand a bit of Dutch but I wouldn't say that I understand everything. I love how German and Dutch correlate and are very relative to each other :)

Greedy betekent toch gewoon gierig? Gulzig gaat specifiek over eten en ze hebben het hier over geld.

Hey I feel like there is a slight translation error in the subtitles. Gierig is translated as meaning greedy, when does it not in fact mean stingy? Which is slightly different :)

karaktereigenschappen vind ik lastig want eigenlijk verschilt dat per mens. In elk land heb je gierige of juist mensen die heel erg delen. In elk land heb je directe en minder directe mensen. Ik kan niet zeggen dat het typisch Nederlands is. Mijn zus heeft dat wel heel erg maar ik ben juist weer het tegenovergestelde. Ik heb altijd veel gedeeld en uitgegeven haha. Ik denk dat vooral nuchterheid wel kan kloppen

It's crazy how whenever you ask someone to describe the people of their country, they will always bring up the negative features of their culture. I always thought of the Dutch as chill, responsible and intelligent people, this is the first time I hear them characterised as "gierig" lmao

_Gierig_ is better translated as stingy, cheap, tight. I think the confusion might stem from the fact that this is actually a false friend with German _gierig_ which does mean greedy. Cheers and great channel!

Ik studeer nu Nederlands en ik heb een vraag. Wat betekent "tikkie"? Because I suppose it doesn't mean "tick" in this context
A tikkie is an online payment request you can send to someone through your phone. Then that person pays it and the money is sent to your bank account. Tikkies are mostly used to split the cost of something, like a restaurant bill, a common present for someone or something you booked for a more people, for example. :)

Rather than "greediness" for "gierigheid", you mean "miserly", "tight" or "stingy".
Does gierig mean greedy or stingy?
It means that you don't want to share money/possession with others/that you don't want to spend money...

Ik verbaas mij er over dat niemand het broodje zoute haring (met of zonder gesnipperde ui) heeft genoemd.
Er is niks meer typisch Nederlands dan dat.
Het schijnt zo te zijn dat er maar 2 volken zijn die rauwe vis eten, Japanners(Sashimi) en Nederlanders (zoute haring)
Geen idee of het echt waar is maar het idee is wel grappig.

this is the old IBM cliche, gone many decades ago (sorry Tim, I wore suits long enough and now I really hate them).
Hockey? are the young men talking about ice hockey? how many dutch play in the NHL (Google says there are 4). Not sure why hockey is not more popular as you have a strong ice skating and soccer tradition.
This would be my objective:
get rid of suits and make hockey (ok, ijshockey naturlijk) the number one sport in the Nederlands!

@@indyola9738 It comes from a childrens game, in English named 'Tag'. We call it 'Tikkertje' and when we tag someone we have to shout 'tikkie, jij bent hem!' Thats where they got their name from!

Ik weet het niet, ik vind de Duitsers een stuk beleefder als het gaat om de directheid.
Ze zeggen wel waar het op staat en zijn duidelijk, maar ze blijven netjes.
Waarbij een Nederlander ook wat krachttermen kan gebruiken of lompe woorden, die dan 'niet zo bedoeld zijn' maar wel lomp of grof klinken.
Een kennis van me, die is een beetje makkelijk met dat soort dingen en die windt er geen doekjes om.
Ze had onlangs last van een kind, dat ergens aan het huilen was. Ze zei; 'Goh, nou, als ik hem zo zie, dan flikker ik hem over de balustrade naar beneden!'
Dat doet ze natuurlijk niet, ze is het soort mens wat knuffelend met de hamsters op de bank zit. Ze is nooit agressief. Maar ze zei het wel zo. Ze is gewoon een beetje simpel, als het over taal of over taalgebruik gaat.
Even later kwam het kind naar beneden met de moeder, waarna ze tegen de moeder riep; 'Laat hem volgende keer z'n bek houden, ja?!'
Het kind greep haar fiets vast en trok eraan, waarop ze de fiets wegtrok en riep; 'En nou die klauwen van me fiets anders dan raak je ze kwijt!'
Waarna het kind met de moeder wegliep en zij verder vertelde over nieuwe kleine baby-engelen-beeldjes en kleine koelkastmagneetjes die ze gekocht had en dat ze die 'zooooo schattig en lief vond.'
Nu is zij wel extreem direct..vind ik. Maar goed, dat zou in Duitsland gewoon agressief heten. En dit is gewoon een beetje vreemd Mokums ofzoiets. (Weetikveel, ik kom niet uit Mokum.)
@@Widdekuu91 Firstly thanks for the new expressions. Dutch is full of these cool colloquialisms I had to look them up. “windt er geen doekjes om”. I guess as an American I can understand Dutch culture better because the mere absurdity of it makes it obvious to me. But it really throws me off how confidently Germans state things even if they are completely incorrect. Interesting idk.
Ugh the first guy is what we call a balletje of kakker in Dutch. The guy doesn't even know that people regularly were clogs in the Netherlands, mainly while gardening or doing odd jobs.

Een Calvinistische Nederlander voelt zich schuldig bij een pleziertje tijdens een feestje of partijtje. Daarom maakt ie het een beetje kleiner. Althans: in woorden.
Jongeren zeggen 'een biertje' terwijl ze 'een pilsje' bedoelen. Bier is iets anders dan pils.

@@EasyDutch Yeah, it took me until the third time "nuchter" was used to realize they were using this version of "sober", which in modern spoken American English isn't really used that way very much. The best example I can think of where we would use it like that is when something that really makes you reconsider something in a profound way is sometimes referred to as a "sobering" experience.

Not even 2% of the people smoke weed every day, it is actually really not that common. Indeed, it's just not that interesting

I'm Dutch. I've never smoked weed (or anything else) in my life and I've only met a handful of people who tried it.
I once spoke to someone about being from the Netherlands.
They asked if I had weed. I said I did not have weed.
They asked where I lived or worked. I said I lived close to Amsterdam and worked in Amsterdam.
The man asked; How much are you?' I was confused and said; Do you mean how old I am?'
The man said; 'No, how much? You work in Amsterdam, right?'
I said; 'Yes, but in a department store...I'm not a prostitute.'
He said; 'A department-store in Amsterdam...so a sex-shop?'
I said; 'No...the V&D...I sell pillows and heavy suitcases and expensive clothing and mugs.."
Amsterdam is more than just one street, it's a gigantic city. And Holland is more than Amsterdam.
And the Netherlands is more than Holland. Et cetera.
