WTF Really Happened to The Fighter?

  • David O. Russell's The Fighter is arguably the director's most acclaimed movie. It tells the true story of boxer Mickey Ward and his older brother, Dicky Eklund, played by Mark Wahlberg and (in an Oscar-winning performance) Christian Bale. While based on a true story, you might very well be surprised by how many liberties were taken with some of the micro-and-macro details in the film while still honoring the overall legacy of the scrappy Lowell underdog and his embattled, drug-addled half-brother Dickie Eklund. To be clear up-front, most of what transpires in The Fighter genuinely occurred in how it's depicted onscreen, with incredible efforts made to recreate the precise in-ring action as it truly happened.
However, in the interest of time and to increase the riveting dramatic stakes of Ward as a true underdog, O. Russell altered several details regarding fighters, won-loss records, weigh-ins, knockouts, and several other glaring and minute details that may have gone over casual fight fans' heads, yet have seriously called into question the movie's overall integrity. And that doesn't include the spate of out-of-ring changes, mainly relating to Dickie's delusions and self-destructive dalliances.
So let's dive into David O. Russell's The Fighter, which, even if it took some liberties, remains a classic in the big-screen fight genre and certainly ranks as a high point in Russell, Bale and Wahlberg's careers. This episode of WTF Happened to this Movie is written by Jake Dee, edited by Adam Walton, produced by Taylor James Johnson and narrated by Steve Seigh.
Let us know in the comments what you think of The Fighter and the place it holds in the filmography of all involved.

Dickie wasn't running from the cops when he jumped out the window. His mother and family were out front and he didn't want his mother to see him there.

Always watch this movie when nothing else is on. It just has a replayable charm to it. Kind of like The Martian (Matt Damon, Dir Ridley Scott) for me

An 8.5 lb difference is actually *enormous* in combat sports! On that note, it's also interesting--and odd--that training for this film was the reason for Wahlberg's famous home weight room. In reality boxers, unlike wrestlers or grapplers, do not tend to have big muscles at all. If he was interested in realism, Wahlberg should have *lost* muscle to get down to Mickey's weight, like he famously was willing to in Boogie Nights. Apparently they decided to make him look more like a movie fighter than a real one, however.

Lowell, MA was my backyard growing up. Ward was and still is the Man to everyone in and around Lowell. Such a scrapper, just like the people in and around Lowell.

I was disapointed the film didn't cover the Gatti fights which I know take place sometime after the events of the film but considering how they moved timeline for other things, it would have been better to end the film with those fight as they better represent the type of fighter/legend Ward is than just some illegitimate world title fight.

Basically, the real life characters lives was so uninteresting that the director and screenwriter had to dramatically make sh*t up.
I understand adding elements to a biopic for dramatic purposes, but when 50% of the story is pure fiction, then, what does that tell you about the person the movie is based on?

You sell your rights to Hollywood and your story is just a start off point for their story. Their story is not the truth but you must realize it’s their story, you sold it to them. Without them your story does not make a memorable movie. It’s up to you to set people straight not them. I don’t agree what they do but again the rights were sold and a story was told they not only made all parties money but got Ward and Eckland some publicity.
