Hey, nurse here, there definitely sounds like a lot of super incompetent people around, but there was certainly some things that are pretty normal.
So the catheters are pretty normal. When you need blood draws frequently you really don't want to stick your arm over and over, there's more risks associated with repeat sticks. Thats fine, whatever, the inner thigh catheter uses your iliac artery because it's a very accessible point. We can't just jam right through your abdomen for everything, and the less intrusive WE are the safer you generally are. I'm not a surgical nurse, so I don't have nearly as much information as I'd like to have, but that sounds pretty standard. Then removing it... yeah thats just gonna suck, sorry.
I think one thing that is difficult for me to parse out is what actual roles were working with you at certain times. Between different aides working under different people and different clinical roles it's kinda difficult to say who has what in their scope. For the arm turning blue and purple, I don't know but it very much could have been two aides/assistants who definitely would not have known how to handle that situation, and then didn't properly communicate with either the nurse or the right nurse, and then sometimes nurses just be busy taking care of other shit.
Yeah, definitely a lot of poor communication and a lot of people just kinda rushing to get their jobs done. And those are going to be problems you risk facing in any health care place.
EDIT: IV fluid is usually a base of salt water (diluted water with 0.9% salt), they MIGHT have a glucose solution instead if eating regular food is a problem for you. But you do need to be pretty careful with taking stuff out. yeah, you needed food and water after that. It's definitely not enough for like straight up severe blood loss. I've been in a similar situation where I passed out while donating blood and I too was very shaky and weak and shit, thats mostly a reaction you have to suddenly losing a not insignificant amount of blood. I can't quite remember if it's massive vasodilation or vasoconstriction (all your arteries constricting or opening up) but it's something like that. Still a super sucky situation, sorry to hear.
If I remember my high school anatomy right, it'd make the most sense for your arteries to constrict in the wake of massive blood loss, to keep a minimum of pressure despite the reduced amount of fluid in your vascular system.

Honestly I think there’s a lot of ineptitude in a lot of hospitals. I mean regardless of country. Idk why it happens, but it’s really baffling sometimes.
I mean, yes but I wonder what those nurses' qualifications are? Is it more relaxed for socialized medicine?
@@alt0248 I mean I’ve had a similar experience of ineptitude here in the states so idk. It may just depend on the individual hospitals quality. I can say that a lot of medical staff get cynical/desensitized to their job also they work ungodly hours. I think all this probably contributes to the stupidity here, but idk. I don’t live in Belgium so I don’t know exactly why they’d be so inept there

Hey folks, as a nurse I kinda filled in a lot of the missing context of Ed’s hospital visit and I feel I need to at least elaborate on the butt swab.
Ed didn’t get molested by that very somber nurse for a COVID test. Likely that was a general microbiology test, which does test for COVID, but because Ed had been in the hospital for a while recently they were worried he might have picked up an antibiotic resistant organism (because hospitals have lots of sick people and you’re more likely to catch one there), some of which like to live up your butt. Hence the extra butt swab.
No. That's the test they do in China. Socialized medicine FTW...

Just wanted to say that I had pretty much the exact same injury as a kid, with pretty much the exact same procedure in the hospital and a roommate that had some shit with his stomach.
When I had my blood taken the nurse kept putting in new vials, then I fainted

Also, it sucks that no one was on the same page for your operations. They could've caused more long-term damage than the car.

As someone who has actually done that before i’d say Ed is overhyping it. Yeah it’s satisfying at one point, but pushing it out is fucking pain and wiping afterward is a massive chore. Overall would not recommend, 4/10.
