Since you use them for 3 teams, they are all needed, so you want to get them all to Violet. In the late game you need to max out Cane since he goes with Auria with the Dodge Bonus. Then Axal as all around team pet. Then Albus, Oliver or Biscuit depending on your main team/hero your building and what skill boost they need.
An Interesting interaction with Axel allowed me to get past path of madness. the opponent's energy steal always kept me from using my front line of hero's primary ability until I used Axel. Axel spreading out damage allowed my heroes to gain enough energy to use their abilities even through the energy drain. couple this with Yasmine. she will only use her primary ability on an enemy that hits her. but Axel makes sure she gets hit. the damage is spread out by Axel but the source of the damage is still the enemy that attacked. this interaction allowed me to clear the path of madness and the rest of chapter 14. (team I used.. Axel, Astaroth, Yasmine, Jhu, Sebastian, Martha) This team only allowed me to do 33 kills per try on the technical division. not sure if anyone has a better team for it.
Very informative, but I think there are a couple of flaws. First, calling a pet "low quality" is a big mistake. It would be better to refer to pets as high or low priority, and remind everyone that it is entirely subjective to each player's teams. Second, my personal preference is to work on one pet at a time and then raise a gem on each side a single charge each day. However, I have plenty of Chaos Particles for the moment. The player's Chaos Particles should also be factored in as to which pet or pets need to be worked on. As far as the strategy of only raising the patronage side of a pet, while that may work in the short term, sooner or later that pet will plateau when all of those gems are full. Then you will have to spend Chaos Particles to increase their rank, which takes time and while your pet will be increasing in power, it won't be helping your teams.
Axel is the best but i build 1st Albus, because he save many battles for me when all team except tank died Albus kill rest enemy team.
Axel is a team pet #1 - his both skills are great - 1st skill mitigate both physical and magical damage which are most common types of dmg) - 2nd skill gives really nice amount of extra healing... as a hero's pet he is great for squishy magic damage heroes as he adds both armour and MA and protects them from one kill shot... all in all the best pet overall for most of the average players out there, expecially in early and mid phase of the game
as for a best hero's pet I vote for Cain and Oliver (diametrically opposite pets) as Cain on Aurora or Dante is like having a Nuke, the amount of energy charging is outstading and we know that the 1 skill damage has the most percentage in total damage dealt in combat... it's like opening the nitro valve on a drag car... Oliver on the other hand is great for keeping a hero alive and gives up a good protection in extra health and armor and good amount of healing through the combat...
I also like Mara on Arachne and Biscuit on Maya, but they are niche pets with rare super power (Arachne + Mara - 15 seconds stun-lock and Maya + Biscuit strripin' out Ode to serenity)
Merlin is actually a favorite pet of mine, but mostly as patron pet for offense magic teams, adding a lot of magic attack and penetration to the chosen mage hero.
As team pet, he's nice but not spectacular.
Mara is a similar story, not great (or bad) at team pet, can be amazing as hero pet for (indeed) the likes of Lian and (if strong enough) for Isaac.
Khorus, i've not fully figured out yet, looks like he has a ton of potential, just have to figure out where to use that potential.
But i have to agree with your choices of best pets, judged on overall use as team and hero pet, yup, Axel, Oliver and Albus are very important.
Certain pets simply demand certain teams, and vice versa, to get the most out of them and ruin the enemy team's day ;)
I prefer the heavy pets, but only when the mood is right.

newest team pet is spongebob--soaks up water based att's and then shoots it back to the front row enemies
New pet is Angel. He block curses and protects exposed souls... LOL
