This film makes you think about it for days. The feeling keeps inside you. Like haunting you sometimes. Just before eunice recieve the news that rubens is dead, the dog is killed for the same police of the state that arrested rubens, and then the dog is buried. The thing is: the dog had more dignity than rubens, he was never buried. This movie is like his body, a return of rubens body for his family after state kidnaped him and spread lies about why he never returned. this film is almost his grave that this family never had to cry for him and in a way a recognition that he existed. Thats why this movie is so special for us. Its a reparation. It is rubens body returning for his family, finally. ❤

That’s a very good detail to recognize comparing the dog and the father. I’m glad to hear your passion for the movie.

"I'm Still Here" is a portrait of a tragic and dark moment experienced in many Latin American countries. However, the message, the importance of history, how a government and ideas can destroy lives, is something universal. The theme speaks to the current situation in the United States, with the mass deportation of immigrants and the current president signaling the possibility of something like a "concentration camp". Keeping history alive is not allowing mistakes to be repeated. In a review of I'm Still Here, a black TH-camr commented on the scene in which Euníce, after many years of fighting, gets the death certificate. It breaks my heart that she is happy, because after a long time, she got the government to confirm that he was killed. It is a bit of dignity returned to this man who was taken from his family, who had to stay together without knowing what had really happened. Returning to the scene, a reporter asks if the State doesn't have more urgent matters than remedying the past, to which Eunice responds "No!". The TH-camr who had commented managed to see a parallel with slavery, which is an atrocity that occurred in several parts of the world, and that there are people who argue that simply because it has come to an end politically, there are more important things than remedying all the damage and consequences of that! Ultimately, it is a work for the world, a message for everyone, and I hope that more than an Oscar, people watch it and understand its message, the importance of art and history!

Brazil and Cuba have made some really great films over the past few decades. Some may be difficult to find these days. The seafront avenue in question is in the Leblon neighborhood, which is currently one of the most expensive neighborhoods in Brazil, perhaps in the world.
Currently, an apartment at the address where the Paiva family used to live ranges from $1 to $6 million, with a monthly condo fee of around $1,000, and a penthouse apartment on this avenue can cost up to $20 million. Houses like the one the Paivas lived in no longer exist.
Living on the seafront in Leblon was no small feat. The house's regulars were rich, famous people and influential politicians.
During the military dictatorship, no one was safe, much less a center-left politician (equivalent to Democrats in the US) who had been impeached by the dictatorship. Walter Salles himself used to visit the house when he was a boy, and was friends with Rubens' children.

The book from which this film originated was written by the Paiva's youngest son, Marcelo. Walter Salles, the director, was one of the children who played with Marcelo in the beach house portrayed in the film. Eunice Paiva graduated as a lawyer at the age of 47, standing out nationally for her work in defense of indigenous people and their rights to officially demarcated lands. The actress who plays Eunice in old age is Fernanda Montenegro, mother of the protagonist - Fernanda Torres, in real life. Montenegro was also nominated for a Golden Globe and an Oscar 25 years ago, for the film Central Station, also by Walter Salles! The book "I'm Still Here" was only possible thanks to the Truth Commission, decreed by Dilma Rousseff, former president of Brazil, whose aim was to investigate crimes committed by the State during the terrible military dictatorship. Two years ago, Brazil suffered another attempted coup against democracy. Those responsible and participants are now being judged. Just to name some of the many reasons why this film is so symbolic and necessary!

    SOME INFORMATION
💎 I'm Still Here is the first Portuguese-spoken movie to be nominated to the Oscar of Best Picture and the sixth that was nominated to Best Foreign Language Film (the fifth representing Brazil).
💎 Fernanda Torres's mother, Fernanda Montenegro was the first latin actress nominated to the Oscar of Best Actress (Katy Jurado, Rita Moreno and Norma Aleandro had already been nominated as Supporting Actress) and, to date, she was the only Portuguese-spoken actor nominated to the award, but her daughter just repeated this. That was in 1999, with the movie Central Station, also directed by Walter Salles and nominated to Best Foreign Language Film.
💎 Fernanda Torres, Selton Mello and Fernanda Montenegro played in Four Days in Septemper, brazilian movie nominated to the Oscar of Best Foreign Language Film in 1998, also about brazilian dictatorship period.
💎 Fernanda Torres, aged 20, won the award for Best Actress at the 1986 Cannes Film Festival by the movie Love Me Forever or Never (tied with Barbara Sukowa, by Rosa Luxemburg). She was the first brazilian actress (of two) to win an award in Cannes. The second one was Sandra Corveloni that, coincidentally, was directed by Walter Salles.
💎 Fernanda Torres was the fourth brazilian actor nominated to Golden Globe, but the second with a Portuguese-spoken performance. The first one was her mother. The other nominees were Sônia Braga (Kiss of the Spider Woman, Moon Over Parador and The Burning Season) and Wagner Moura (Narcos).
💎 I'm Still Here is the fourth movie of Walter Salles to be nominated to the Golden Globe of Best Foreign Language Film (Central Station won, and the other nominees were Behind the Sun and Motorcycle Diaries) and the second nominated to the Oscar of the same category (Central Station was the first)
💎 Fernando Torres, father of Fernanda Torres (yes, they got the same name), played in Kiss of Spider Woman (4 nominations to the Oscar 1986, William Hurt won Best Actor)
💎 Fernanda Torres gained a pop star quality in Brazil because her performances in the sitcoms Normal People and Slaps and Kisses.
