He lost them less than 1 minute 30 seconds in when he said that the question of happiness had only been recently addressed in the last 150 or so years. Many Muslims believe Muhammad addressed all those questions 1400 years ago so I think they got a little offended.
Great, great speech. In 2002 after a very long episode of mania and madness... I found myself in prison for the first time at the age of 50. Six months later when my case went to trial the judge gave me probation. When I got out I was rehoused and embarrassed to see my old friends... and drinking and depressed... but gradually things changed and now I am virtually teetotal, back in touch with my old mates, have made new friends through voluntary work and fairly content. Never would I have been able to predict the level of contentment that I have attained... There is another great Ted talk which addresses the unpredictability of the future after traumatic events where when questioned as to whether an event will be detrimental in the long run the speaker says "too early to say..." If anyone knows the name of the person giving that talk it would be interesting to hear it again. PS Self isolating here and perfectly content at present.
When you get what you want, happiness only last for a day. It is just a state of mind. It fails because of insecurity and not being happy within one's self. People think they'd be happy and fulfilled by others or stuff of some sort.
Really well said. Indeed, apart from material goods, money and all kinds of fancy, luxury products, I believe the significant element as the contributor for our happiness is, ultimately, our relationships with people, especially with those are near and fear to us, such as our family, friends and loved ones.
I respect these people for asking him. He has some home truths that many would avoid in this area of the world. It’s a sign that the UAE is prepared to at least listen and perhaps in time learn. It takes a great speaker like Dan to stand in the middle and tell them.
Psychology teaches that TEMPERAMENT does not change. What changes might be values, preferences and status of your hormons. It is banal to say that your favorite singer now might not be your favourite singer in 20 days! To state this, you dont need science and every functioning person is able to predict this. As to hormones and transmitters in our body - this is a different story. Lack of dopamine and seretonine grows with age - and this has massive consequences on our well being.
Thanks to him speaking a little bit slower than usual, it's much easier to understand for non-native English speaker.
These people don’t look happy 🙁. Dan is an excellent speaker. Thank you Dan!
