A lot of the reasons the show isn't as good as the original is because Bob Camp worked with John K. on the original show.
Camp kept everything focused and made sure things didn't go too far.
To be honest, it seemed like sometimes censorship is a good thing because it forces you to find smarter and more creative ways to tell stories and jokes without stooping to the lowest common denominator.

    • @PKMN37
      @PKMN37 3 ปีที่แล้ว +52

It wasn't censorship so much as keeping John K on a leash. Censorship would be editing out stuff one doesn't like *after* the release. It's about controlling what people see and hear. That's why most people are against censorship.

As for the answer to your last question- APC was both Johs middle finger, and his true vision. Reen Seeks Help, and Stimpy's Pregnant were actually unused concepts, and loose ideas unused from the original. Thankfully, Nick turned these ideas down. APC only revealed that Nick's executive meddling was actually the originals saving grace. It was great because Nick kept certain shit in line. Vanessa Coffey is also one of the large reasons why the original Ren was such a great character, and why he and the earlier episodes had the good amount of heart that they did. It really saddens me to know what Johns true vision for Ren and Stimpy was. An abusive, co-dependent relationship, with no substance, and sloppy animation with no plots, and just a bunch of nonsense. It saddens me even more that APC destroyed the possibility for Ren and Stimpy to ever make a real comeback, outside of Nick sports games.

Exactly! The gross-outs should be incidental and not THE FOCUS. "REN & STIMPY" worked best when the crossness was minimal and it relied on wacky, satire and just being silly. Also, in the original, Ren & Stimpy...while they were profoundly dysfunctional, still were buddies who cared about each other deep down (in a weird, twisted sort of way). If Ren was being abusive, it was for good reason and simply a matter of him overreacting rather than sadism. Some of the best humor didn't involve extreme gross-outs at all...That silly "Happy Helmet", the nature show spoof (the 'Frilled Ren' was adorable), the space adventure with the red button, etc.
    ---
However, John K is an idiot and assumed everyone liked "R & S" for the gross-outs. I don't buy his "I was forced into it by Spike" for one second. The Emperor has no clothes and his later offering bear this out. "REN & STIMPY" was awesome DESPITE John K not because of him. "REN & STIMPY" can come back and be great again without ANY of John K's involvement!

It’s like John K’s. older issues with Nick was one of the few instances in television history where the network executives were actually in the right (i.e. “Hey, maybe this episode’s a bit too much. Try and tone it down a bit, please” or “John, you’re taking way too long.”).
Then again, maybe I’m just salty about a dude who treated his employees, his underage female fans and the people around him like absolute garbage.
Honestly, this spin off was probably an opportunity for him to show his true colors as a human being: Vile and grotesque.

As an adult female that is into more "male-oriented" things, I was a fan of the original Ren & Stimpy that was on Nickelodeon. When I first heard about the DVDs coming out, advertising "lost episodes", I was thinking that it was just a case of episodes that were deemed "not kid-friendly" and had been produced years later for the now grown-up audience that had watched the show before. Boy... was I wrong. I could barely get through two episodes, and I have since then blocked out everything that I saw/heard while watching them.

I remember being so excited to see that Ren and Stimpy were coming back. I actually tuned in to the premiere episode when it aired. My problem was that the humor tried too hard to be edgy. By the time you had Ren freak out on Stimpy by saying, "How many times do I have to remind you? I'm the pitcher! You're the catcher!" I figured that the show wasn't the show I was thought it would be. The original series had some edgy humor to it, but I think being on a kid's network made it walk a fine line that actually made it funny because of how they had to work around that limitation. This was just basically John K going, "Now that I'm not doing this for a kid's network, I'm going to make it as offensive as possible." and shoehorn in a bunch of unfunny edgy jokes for the sake of it.

In the original, Stimpy was a brilliant inventor and his character was innocent. In the adult versions, Stimpy is just stupid and banal. It is as though John K. wanted to create his ultimate F*U middle finger to everyone in the industry who had turned on him. I once thought John K. was brilliant. I've heard Ren and Stimpy Adult Party Cartoon is just awful and it's definitely one of the far worst 2000s cartoons of all time. It is infamous for its episode Ren Seeks Help. I've only seen some bits of it on TH-cam and it's absolutely horrific. Ren is seen torturing the poor innocent frog, removing the caterpillar's legs and killing the ants by burning. At the end of the same episode, he starts attacking and killing Mr. Horse as he goes completely mad.

I remember when John K got fired in the early 90's they interviewed him
in Cenimatique (?) Magazine in 1992 and they listed off a bunch of
episodes that Nickelodeon rejected in 1991 and two of those episodes
ended up being "Onwards & Upwards" and "Altruists" and they included
quotes from the script & storyboard that ended up in the Adult Party
    Cartoons over a decade later.
I think if Vanessa Coffey let him do them for Nickelodeon but made him
tone it down a bit, they would have ended up being better episodes.
When John K is left to his own devices unchecked, he tends to ruin things.

I have to say this every time I see one of these APC reviews. John K is the worst thing to happen to R&S. He created them, yeah, but for the most part he wasn't there to work on the show. He wanted perfection and had high demands, but Nickelodeon got tired of him not showing up to work, so they eventually got rid of him due to deadlines.
APC happened, and the same thing happened again. He wasn't showing up to work. Except this time Nickelodeon couldn't step in and continue without him. The staff had to work on the show without John K. John K deliberately designed APC to appeal to the dumbest people, saying something like "they're so stupid they won't even realize how bad it is". That design, PLUS he wasn't showing up to oversee the project, and that was the result.
The guy had TWO chances to make R&S a success. And he failed both times. The guy only worked on season 1 and 2 of the original, and season 1 was only 6 episodes long. Nickelodeon did three other season PLUS the original two without him. He deserves no credit for R&S and they need to quit letting him touch that franchise.

APC was the revival spinoff that should have never happened. If I could mandela effect it out existence, and have it be just a fever dream, I would. It was just Johns massive middle finger to Nick for firing him, and driving his creation into the ground; when ironically he once again fucked himself over, did the same to his franchise. It almost killed the entire, along with Johns later sex abuse allegations. The show was also Johns way to indulge his sick perversions, and expose his mentality, without anyone to reign him in check.
What made the show unlikable, was of course the over the top, extreme grossout. The over the top nonsensical stories, and lack of substance. Shitty pacing, and the complete bastardization of the characters is what made this series fail hard. It lacked the heart and care of the original. I remember staying up to watch it back in 03 when it premiered, and thinking "wtf is this?!" It just felt so wrong, and too far removed from the original. While I found the tail end to the Nick run to be a slog getting through, I could only bear watching one episode of APC. On my first attempt, I couldn't get through five minutes of the first episode. Though the animation was sold as being improved, it looked so cheap to me. I tried a second time but couldn't get past the self serving introductory diatribes John K rambled off before the second ep.
There are some true horroresque stories about that guy, and he def sends off those vibes. One of said intros on APC DVD legitimately reminded me of a ransom video some kidnapper would send to a young girls' parents. @@Diskest still a bad episode, but there's a skeleton of an interesting plot. It is mostly edgy torture jokes though

I am in the minority for sure but I LOVED the original Nicktoons version and equally loved the adult version.

Jordan. I love your work, man. I just gotta throw it out there that my grandma (she smoked a lot if u know what I mean, cool granny) handed me a CD case to watch cartoons and other movies. She handed me this CD in particular, and I about died when I put it in, I couldn't believe this was allowed to be made on a CD. That being said, it wasn't the worst thing I've ever watched. It had its funny moments, and id like to think that the episode "Ren seeks help" is the best interpretation of how fucked up some people in the world are, and portrays a realistic take on what some mentally ill people experience(d) to get that way. That's about all I can say about it, tho. 🤭😂

I did see this, but I avoided it like the plegue. It just wasn't my humor. But I am thankful that it opened so many options and gave life to so many artist. It's a good show if not one of the better ones. Just not something I enjoyed watching.
So give credit where it's due.
