The best sitcoms of the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, & 90s had huge followings, but they ALL eventually ended. WLIIA ran 5 years in the US & that was after its run in the UK. That's a longer run than most shows. And no, improv is NOT easy. There's a reason why most improv vids posted to YT suck. It's an art form. The regs on WLIIA were DaVincis and Michelangelos, whereas most who come out of your improv classes are paint-by-number artist wannabes.
Improv is a lot harder than a regular comedian because you have to think of it on the spot. Regular comedians have days, weeks, or even months to prepare for their act and write their jokes. Sometimes they're not even funny.
To the guy saying Improv is for hacks...most comedic performers rely heavily on improvisation. Robin Williams has made a career of it. Some of the best moments in film, tv, and theater are moments that improvised and are spontaneously created. Improv is also taught and used in most acting classes. There's nothing hacky about coming up with something off the top of your head that makes a room full of ppl laugh.
If you are a professional actor you take lessons in improv as an acting technique. Actors in movies improv lines and scenes all the time. If you don't understand how important improv is as an acting technique then you don't understand film, theater, or television. Improv is also very important for talk show host so they can interact with their audience and guests.
