It’s 8:10 am in wA State US. In doing a crossword puzzle it mentioned Aberdeen, Scotland. It led to a great ad for when & why you would/wouldn’t visit at certain times. THIS led to a man telling you what a midge is. Very informative and also funny. The sense of humor was great and made me want to visit Scotland even more! Thank you for the wonderful information. 😉
Having a honeymoon in Scotland and will be as prepared as I can be. Midges LOVE me the bites they leave are huge and numerous. I have smidge but have not tested it here in Ireland yet.
Smidge does not contain DEET, it's Active ingredient is Saltidin, also contains Hexyl cinnamal, Limonen and Linalool. It works very well for most people. Jungle Formula is cheaper and works very well too and they have removed DEET from the ingredients. That said and although DEET is brutal on skin and Goretex it is still recommended for malaria countries.
There is a fungus that grows on dead beech trees, called beech fungus. It looks like a large saucer growing at right angles to the trunk. It's hard and woody. You collect one or more of these - you'll need to belt it with a stick or a hammer to remove it. Next break it up into small pieces about 2"x1", You might need your hammer or a saw for this. It is quite tough. When you go camping you put three or four pieces on a rock, or a metal plate at the entrance to your tent (or camper van) and light it. It will not burn, it will smoulder for quite a long time, giving off a not unpleasant smelling smoke. This deters midges, mosquitoes, clegs (horse flies) and anything else that flies and bites. Best thing is it's free and you made it yourself. I live and camp in Scotland. I use this every time.
I like the roll-ons because you can place the repellent on the right gaps to your skin (wrists & back of hands). Also they still work when almost empty. The midge hood is great but don't be fooled by mozzy nets - they have larger holes which the midges walk through.

It works well in Scotland so should be fine there. It's the best we've tried.

Exactly this. Smidge is great because it has no DEET

We live in the Highlands. Clegs and deer ticks are a far worse menace than midges. The bites are horrible but DEET keeps them at bay.
I'm using my drone to get rid of them ...
Thanks for the info - planning to walk the Skye Trail in August and may have to think of some ways to prevent getting eaten!
Smidge!
Only wee Jimmy Krankie Sturgeon is more annoying than midges
