Craftsmen Revealed: Studying Stones

Can you imagine, there is still a Florentine craft that has remained almost the same for around 500 years?
That craft is Pietra Dura, the piecing together of polished semi-precious coloured stones according to the patterns and colours of a painting; due to the brittleness of the stones, almost all crafts of Florentine mosaic remain the same to the original crafts in the 15th century.
Hantang Culture’s new A World of Excellence series Craftsmen Revealed visits the Studio Musivo Lastrucci, perhaps the most renowned Pietra Dura workshop of today. Stepping back to the age of Renaissance, we listen to Iacopo Lastrucci’s story, how he set on the path of studying stones and continues to pass on this special craft.
