I think part of the reason Sally is adamant to have Percy attend boarding school is, not just to protect him, but as a well-funded school they’d have more resources to help kids with dyslexia or ADHD. And it’s not explicitly stated, but I don’t think they have much money - meaning Sally has to work a lot and would struggle to make time to teach him properly.

Okay I totally didn’t even remember Sally is working full time!!! That totally slipped my mind so I get why she can’t homeschool Percy but didn’t get why he couldn’t go to a normal day time school. But ohhhhh I didn’t really realize the boarding schools were specifically good for Percy’s adhd and dyslexia and that normal schools couldn’t help him with that. That makes so much sense! Thank you so much for watching and letting me know!! 😊🤍

There also the fact Percy has never attended the same school two years in a row, cause something always happens to get him expelled

the misunderstanding of sally jackson in this video is vexing me so much. they have always been close, she doesn’t want to get rid of him. she has no choice, as a half blood (and child of the big three) he attracts attention/monsters. sending him to a boarding school (and living with a smelly man like gabe) are sacrifices she makes to keep him as safe as she can (masking his scent as much as possible). Plus it’s a special school for kids with learning disabilities which she mentions in the car scene but idk if you didn’t catch that. she also tells poseidon that “me and him alone in an apartment” isn’t enough to not attract said attention). also also how can she home school him as an overworked single mom (something he can’t fully understand despite wanting because he’s a literal child and now that he’s older, he has so much more perspective). this episode is all about percy realizing these sacrifices and overall a reflection on his mother and their relationship. her yelling at him in the car was definitely stern but she’s his mother not his friend, it’s part of her job description to make these choices he doesn’t fully grasp yet. idk why that would affect how to feel about her character or their relationship

Oh I totally understand Sally now!! I just didn’t understand her reasoning throughout the episode but at the end it all made sense. I didn’t really realize the boarding schools were specifically good for Percy’s adhd and dyslexia and that normal schools couldn’t help him with that. That makes so much sense! And she’s soooo smart for not wanting him anywhere near Gabe if she can help it. That detail from the books about why she’s with him is so crazy and sad for Sally but she’s so brave to put up with him just to protect Percy omg. It’s just so sad that Percy couldn’t understand all those reasons for everything Sally was doing because she really was doing everything she could to protect him. As someone who has ADHD and a mother who sometimes got mad like Sally Jackson, I loved this scene. It’s hard for parents to parent, and they’re human too. I love my mom and I’m glad they showed Sally being upset but still show what an awesome mom she is.

On the question of boarding school: On top of what everyone else has said, we don’t get into Sally’s head in the books, but I’ve always assumed part of the reason she sends Percy away to boarding school is that she had her reasons for marrying Gabe, but she also knew he was terrible and was trying to minimize the time Percy had to spend with him

In the books, there actually was a three headed dog, Cerberus, and Annabeth used a ball to distract it while Percy and Grover passed through the line. Cerberus was also a really good dog in the book and it liked playing with Annabeth and didn't want her to leave 😢

It's very jarring to hear Sally yell at Percy at first, but you also have to put yourself in her shoes. She's a single mother to a neurodivergent demigod child who is acting out because he's seeing things that are getting him kicked out of school and feels like he's being abandoned. She can't tell him why he's seeing things or why she has to send him away, so she has to internalize his outbursts alone because she has no one else to talk to about it. I took her raising her voice as her finally snapping under the pressure of all of it, and I really can't blame her.

    • @WeCouldBeHeroesDesigns
      @WeCouldBeHeroesDesigns  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

I definitely took this scene as like Sally’s lowest parenting moment and definitely did not get the impression that this usually happens. Like you said, I think she snapped under the pressure and I totally understand. That doesn’t make it any less out of line or tragic for Percy, but I have soooo much empathy for Sally Jackson. Like Poseidon said, she has no one to talk to and that might be the most unfair part of it. I LOVED that line so much. Thank you so much for watching and commenting!! 😊🤍

Thank You! Well said!As a mother of a 6 year old with ADHD I keep shaking my head at Reactors thinking that Sally is being a mean, bad mom here. Parents get frustrated and raise their voices sometimes. And I actually thought her line was really good. I have dealt with my kid not wanting to go to school and I've told them "I'm sorry but you don't have a choice. You have to go but you do have a choice in how you behave. You can choose to have a bad or good day."

    1) Cerberus (fluffy) was in the books. He didn't chase them, but he was getting ready to attack them before annabeth started playing with him
    2) as a neurodivergent kid (different "issues" to percy but some of the base stuff is the same) most of us find it extremely difficult to go to any school, let alone a boarding one and sometimes the parents will just try to force you to go in, it doesn't make them bad parents or strict parents, it's just that they're trying to do the right thing but I think being neurodivergent makes most ppl really stubborn, but they also have greater empathy so effectively guiling them is literally the only way. In Sally and percys case they would both be in serious danger if he didn't go to school
    3) Sally's effectively a single mother, she doesn't have the time or possibly even energy to homeschool percy, also assuming she was married to smelly gabe at that point she wouldn't want percy to face that every day (or to see that he physically abuses her, at least in the books) also they never explain why they're married in the show, but basically demigods have a smell that means monsters can track them, gabe smells so badly of mortal that he covers up the demigod smell, protecting percy everywhere he goes
    4) (sorry this is so long) he can't go to normal school, he would be next level bullied

I’m loving these reactions and about the boarding school thing something Percy says in the pilot “Am I troubled kid , yeah you could say that” they don’t explain it but in the books that’s a reference to the fact that Yancy academy is a school for troubled kids and Percy explains to the reader that he ended up there because he’s been kicked out of every school he’s ever been to. I don’t know if that’s still canon in the show but I think that’s part of why he goes to boarding school. So excited to watch the finale with you! 💕🎀

2:44- Yes, yes, and yes. Death from “Supernatural” is playing Percy’s cousin.
3:09- Because A- that’s book-accurate, and, B- that’s the closest they could get to truly myth accurate Procrustes. He had an iron bed on Mount Korydallos-a sacred path between Athens and Eleusis (another city in Greece; the more you know)-and when people lay down, he would stretch them to fit the bed perfectly, or chop off whatever didn’t fit if they were too tall…
6:31- Bear McCreary (dope name, BTW, if you ever read this, Mr. McCreary) has done the music for both Agents of Shield and this, and I think I saw that he’s coming back for the second season!
11:37- Those are all people going to the Underworld. If I remember right, movie 1 did this part much the same way.
12:37- I think that the Knitting Ladies were supposed to help throw us off to the fact that Percy was alive in the water. I may be wrong, but, that was how I took it.
14:08- You’ll meet another really great monster character in the next season. Can’t wait for you to see him because I know you’ll love him.
19:15- Athena is the goddess of wisdom and battle strategy, so it’s assumed that Annabeth would have already tried using her dagger which is made of the same material as Percy’s. If she couldn’t get through, he knows Riptide wouldn’t be able to either.
22:02- I think it’s similar to the shoes. Ares magic-ed it so that it would show up in their bag right as they went into the pit.
25:07- I think he eventually realized that, even if he can’t know everything at that moment, Sally will always be doing her best, and that is something that not a lot of people can say.
27:55- Yes! Kronos is the Dementor!! And he’s the big bad!!! Myth time: so Kronos is the father of the gods, and then he ate them all. Zeus had to cut them all out, and Kronos has been in Tartarus ever since. But the Thief (I know you know, Sarah, but in case somebody else doesn’t know) is working with Kronos, and so he’s trying to get the Bolt to Kronos so that Kronos can start a war and take over Olympus again, because the Thief is very strong in their belief that the gods are bad rulers…and parents.
30:43- Top two best acted scenes in this show without debate, IMO. (I don’t know if it’s flat out “the best” because the betrayal is just so well acted too, but still…)
32:45- Yep! Hephaestus! (Which, if anyone else watched Psych on and off like I did when I was young, it was great to see Lassie :). )
32:57- You can say many things about Sally Jackson, but you cannot say that she wouldn’t give the world to Percy if he wanted it. Her methods in this episode suck-I will give you that-but she honestly doesn’t know how to do any better. The show doesn’t mention this, but have you wondered why a Queen like Sally is living with (and, in the books and the OG movie, I believe married to) someone as terrible as Gabe? The books have an excellent explanation: Gabe smells so bad that he literally covers up Percy’s monster-attracting smell. So, not only does she have to put up with all the verbal abuse, but she also has to deal with all the abuse to her nose as well. And she does it ALL for Percy.
33:47- Thunder rolls because it’s Zeus’s warning that he’s already been down there for too long. Thunder always come after lightning, and lightning is one of Zeus’s things, so that is the subtle way of Zeus telling Poseidon: “get back up here NOW. You can’t allow yourself to get attached…”
35:21- I have been under the impression that this is the same beach as Ep. 1. Someone more knowledgeable can correct me if I’m wrong.

    As other people said
It is not that Sally wants to leave Percy, but she wants him to have the best experience out of what is happening. She cannot do home schooling because 1) She is the breadwinner of her home and has to work all day 2) She wants Percy to have a normal life, she wants him to have friends and live as a normal kid. She prefers to send him to a school that is prepared to manage his ADHD and dislexia to make this experience easier for him.
I do agree that maybe Percy had to hide and accept those moments and think that Sally was just doing the best she could (and she was), and this probably made them have the relationship they have now. Part of growing up is understanding some of the decisions our (good) parents made to raise us, and in my opinion this is what happened to Percy, he understood the sacrifice and effort that Sally had to make through the years for him to have the best life he could.

I think that Sally is a human going through a really tough time as a single mother. Regardless of Percy being a demigod, that's a REALLY hard position to be in, and she deserves a lot of grace because parenting is tough, and isn't handled perfectly all the time because no one is perfect. Like yeah Percy is having a tough time, but he's being a bit of a brat, which is within his right, he's learning to manage his emotions, but Sally is really struggling too.

@@WeCouldBeHeroesDesigns also when this conversation takes place is when they’re at the Beach but, a difference in the book is that Sally doesn’t actually tell Percy about him being a demigod there, they still get chased to camp by the Minotaur and everything but Percy doesn’t know anything about him being a demigod until Chiron and Annabeth tell him. So he doesn’t understand when the confer happens what she’s protecting him from but I feel like it definitely helped him understand her more after he found out about everything.😁😁 ( I think she meant to tell him about the whole demigod thing she just didn’t get the chance in the book)

One of the things from the books I was most disappointed they changed was the "Gates to the Underworld" being like airport gates. There's three lines, one for the really bad people going to the Fields of Punishment, and one for the really heroic ones going to Elysium. But the line for the middle of the road people is the fastest moving, so it's called the "EZ Death Line."

Anyway this episode is amazing like top three of the season for me cause it’s just have so many great moments, sally and poseidon’s flashbacks were truly EVERYTHING and i just think their relationship is so sad like the fact that no matter how much poseidon wants to be a part of her life or percy’s life, he just can’t do anything about it (btw the thunder you hear when sally asked him if he wanted to talk to percy was basically zeus saying “NO”) and the fact that he still came the second sally needed him is so 🥲 and don’t get me wrong he’s still pretty bad but the show really made me see him differently than in the books. Also with sally and the boarding school thing is so sad too, i think she was just trying her best to protect him cause she obviously wants percy to be with her more than anything but no matter how much she wants it she just knows she can’t cause it is really dangerous and she’s just trying her best to protect him like she said “sometimes i have to make choices that you may not understand” and is really sad for percy cause at that moment he really didn’t understand and thought his mom just didn’t want him around :( anyway i could talk forever but this comment is long enough 😭 so impatient for the next video! hope you like it 🫶🏻

I think there was a line you missed -- which is totally natural and understandable, by the way! Unlike us, you have to talk and look at the camera while watching; and also you can't just rewind if you didn't catch something like the rest of us can.
But anyway: in the car, Sally said _"Dr. Higgins said this is the best school. The best Program in the State for kids with learning differences. We were very lucky to get in."_ I'm assuming that Dr. Higgins is a Psychiatrist they know, probably the one who at the time was currently helping Percy.
So I don't think that she was pushing Percy away. She also wasn't sending him to just any boarding school. She was sending him to the best school she could possibly have found to get him the best learning experience possible.
And Homeschooling would never have been acceptable to her, because that would mean a severely limited exposure to the wider, human world; which in turn would mean that Percy wouldn't learn who he is before getting to Camp and "[Poseidon's] family trying to tell him who they want him to be".
Percy, of course, was like 7 or so and would never have been able to understand all that.
Finally, I think that Hermes' line is important here: _"Have you ever been close to the people you love and you know that you have no choice but to keep hurting each other?"_ Note the "each other" there. Hermes, the God who can see all of Time and Space, already knew that Sally Jackson had no choice but to hurt Percy by sending him to the Boarding School; just as Percy had no choice but to hurt Sally due to feeling betrayed and saying hurtful things born from that feeling of betrayal.

I totally understand Sally now!! I just didn’t understand her reasoning throughout the episode but at the end it all made sense. That line definitely didn’t stick with me much at the time. I didn’t really realize the boarding school was specifically good for Percy’s adhd and dyslexia and that normal schools couldn’t help him with that. That makes so much sense! From what I can remember from the books the main reason why Sally was so insistent on Percy going to school is because it was harder for monsters to track him when he wasn’t home. The underworld in the show is very true to the underworld in Greek mythology, you're hearing underworld and you're thinking Christian Hell, but the two don't correlate, the underworld is where ALL the dead go to, both good and evil and everyone in between. the same goes to Hades, you hear king of the underworld and think the devil (made worse by Hollywood depictions that do the same correlation) but that couldn't be farther then the truth. In Greek mythology Hades is actually one of the better gods, In that this show is actually one of the best depictions of him I ever saw, he's not evil, his job is to watch over and take care of the souls of the dead.

12:40 In the books, the fates cutting the string was a foreshadow of a certain character's fate in the great prophecy (which they will probably talk about next season, but the great prophecy is what all 5 books lead up to). But also in the book, Percy is the one that sees the fates cut the string closer to the beginning when he is on his way home from Yancy Academy. So since the tv show changed the timing and which character saw the string being cut, does it refer to something else now or is it still referring to the same thing? I'm not sure. My mind ponders. Prophecies are mysterious things.

Some info on Procrusty. In the myths he would lead travelers into either a bed that is too long (where he would stretch them into their limbs popped off) or too short (where he would cut off their legs and/or head off). In the book both Annabeth and Grover were trapped by it, so Percy had to saved them by trapping Procrusty in those same traps and cutting off his head.
In regards to the cousins comment. They are actually half brothers, but this is a little more complicated. In the books it is stated that gods don't have DNA, so campers don't see each other as blood family unless they are from the same cabin.
Also just to make it clear, In greek mythology the underworld is not hell. It would be more correct to just say the underworld is the afterlife, and that hell purgatory and heaven are different sections there.
The fates (the knitting ladies) are the ones cutting the string. I'll just say that the show might want you to think that Percy going gold was him dying, but book readers know better.
In regards to Hades palace, it was a while since I read the book, but I think it was described as an upside down mount Olympus.
About the master bolt in the book Percy notes that the closer he gets to the palace the heavier the backpack becomes, implying that a spell or something was placed so that the bolt would only appear in the underworld.
Kronos is also the father of Zues Poseidon and Hades, he heard that one of his kids would one day overthrow him so he ate them when they were born. Zues escaped due to his mother made Kronos puck up his siblings and they defeated Kronos in the great titan war.

    --------------------
    In Greek mythology, The Underworld is both Heaven and Hell. Generally speaking, the Greek Underworld can be thought of as being made up of three different regions;

The Asphodel Meadows - The Asphodel Meadows was the region of the Underworld where the majority of the deceased would end up.

Just to go over a bit of Greek mythology, the Titans ruled the world before the Olympians did. The ruler of the Titans was Kronos, who was infamous for eating his own children, including Zeus, Poseidon and Hades. Zeus was the only one to escape this fate. He eventually managed to trick Kronos into puking up Poseidon and Hades. After that, they formed an army and led a rebellion against the Titans, which they won. Kronos was chopped into a million pieces and thrown into the depths of Tartarus, the deepest, darkest part of the Underworld. He's been imprisoned in Tartarus ever since. Zeus's master bolt is the only weapon powerful enough to open the gates and allow Kronos to escape
The three headed dog is Cerberus, who guards the gates to the Underworld itself.
Hades' helm of darkness is a real item in Greek Mythology. It was made by the elder Cyclopes after he and his brothers freed them. The cyclopes also forged Zeus' master bolt and Poseidon's trident. Annabeth's cap I believe was invented for the book series

I don’t think her reaction was that bad to him locking the door and talking back to her, and refusing to obey her. Is it fun to have to raise your voice sometimes and be stern with your kids? No. But she’s the adult and she has to teach Percy how to handle tough situations. One way or another he’s going to go to school, like she said it’s not a negotiation. So it’s his choice whether he says goodbye angry or not. We all have choices to make in the face of things we don’t want to do but nevertheless we must do them. I think she gets upset because she’s sad to leave him too and his behavior is making it so they can’t have a loving parting.
I think in the previous episode Percy thought this memory was about how his mom had no choice but to hurt him by leaving him at school and then in this episode he’s realizing he hurt her too by his misunderstanding of her. So in some way they both hurt each other here.

I thought it was not giving her Dad a second chance, hence why she is going off to meet him at the end.

LITERALLY 😂 That’s what I love about Percy and all three of the trio is they will sacrifice themselves for each other within a second. Their friendships are so amazing!

I KNOWWWW IT MAKES ME SO SAD FOR LITTLE PERCY!!!!!! 😭 Someone made the point that she worked a full time job so couldn’t homeschool and that normal schools couldn’t help him with his dyslexia, so I kinda understand why boarding school was the last resort, but it’s still soooo sad! 💔

@@WeCouldBeHeroesDesignsI can't remember exactly why (I JUST returned the lightning thief to the library, my memory is awful), but there was something about it being for his protection? I know this next bit is probably a spoiler, but by the time this video has come out, you've probably already watched the last episode. I don't think this is said in the books, but I've always thought she sent him to boarding school to keep him safe from Gabe, and he is protected for a very long time just by living with him over the summer. Gabe is abusive, and while she married him to protect Percy, she still has to protect Percy from Gabe himself. (Anybody's who's read the books, please correct me if I'm wrong, it's been a while since I've read the entire series and my attention span is awful so I miss a lot of things when I read.)

@kae9793 That was always my understanding and interpretation. Gabe is so disgusting that his smell masks Percy all school year. Gabe is abusive and so Sally sends him away to protect him but every year something happens to Percy and he gets kicked out of the school and has to find a new one.

Homeschooling requires a parent to be home. Sally is the only person with a salary in the household, so she can't just stay home and teach him.

i love watching people react to pjo i was reading the first book while the show was coming out. the dog is Cerberus and he is in the books. Hades is nicer in the show. Poseidon is a better father in the show. Kronos is the father of Zeus, Poseidon, Hades and some other gods, Kronos is the titan god of time. He got a prophecy that one of his children will betray him so he literally ate his children a few eons ago but Hera hid Zeus so he wasn't eaten. then Zeus grew up and tricked him into puking them out, since they were gods they grew up and survived in Kronos stomach. Zeus then cut him to pices and dropped him into Tartarus the deepest pits of hell, also all monsters after killed go there for a while.
