“I want to look like myself.” It has taken me 40 years to reach this same conclusion. It breaks my heart to think that younger generations will never reach that level of acceptance because refusing their own faces is all they’ve ever been taught. Social media is so dangerous to everyone’s self esteem. It was bad enough before the internet.
You know what they say: "With age comes wisdom." I'm closing in on 40, and it took me 33 years to accept how I look and who I am. It wasn't until 35-36 that I finally embraced my natural appearance and felt comfortable going out in public without a single drop of makeup on. I feel some regret that it took me so long to accept myself, but I feel so much worse for young people who have grown up in the age of filters. They never have a chance to be natural or to enjoy their uniqueness. I hope young people will do what we have done -- grow to love ourselves as we age -- but it's so damn difficult nowadays.
this is such a sweet comment, i totally agree :) from a teenage girl’s perspective, i just mean to reassure you that most of us are doing good, and have either healthy or healing relationships with our own faces. i really appreciate that nowadays, i can just glance at myself in the mirror before i leave in the mornings, see my big nose and my big (definitely very messy) hair, and just nod and say "yeah, i look like myself," with familiarity. but it’s definitely hard, especially when teenagers who can already be so mean now have super inflated ideas of beauty, and will judge based on those standards.
I did at the age of 13, after hating myself since the age of 9 bc my classmates kicked me out of the social circle, i'm 15 about to turn this year 16, wish the same for the other women and girls
@floslafleur so true queen!! cuz it's honestly so fun looking like yourself and being able to be like this is who I am yk like being ur true self is so fun and comfy 😆 and plus ppl are beautiful for looking like themselves which I always remember so ur beautiful queen 😋
The trend I dislike is buccal fat removal. I feel like it is destroying some beautiful faces, and it is permanent. I would never do something to myself that is forever based on the look of the moment. I just subscribed to your channel - it is fantastic!
Thank you so much, happy to have you here! And I completely agree, I'm almost 34 and I want more facial fat, not less! I'm losing volume in my face and it really ages me.
I feel like I naturally have this sort of line between my face and cheekbones that would make me look more gaunt and never liked it and now it’s trendy to look like that? I guess the good thing is you are always beautiful somewhere or sometime even if you don’t currently like something about your look
Naming everything is definitely annoying! Like I being a dark redhead is "not real redhead" and "ugly," but girls rush to the salon to get "Cowboy copper" hair, and it's "ThEBeSTreDHAir" It's the exact same color as mine! You just told me that I look like a mop with it, but since tiktok gave it a cute trend name it is to die for *sigh*
Honestly I don’t want viral products, I want good products. Viral is just a fad and people are wasting their money on those products. What shows a great TH-cam channel is that they don’t follow TikTok mess or influencer marketing , because it’s for children. I follow people who just find products that are really well made and worth buying.
I feel like influencers today are made to be really relatable, she is your friend and just like you, here to find out what products actually work. I admit that it really convinced me to spend money on expensive shitty or really mediocre products that I’m now only using because I just want to finish them, I hate throwing shit out
i dont even know what viral means anymore, remember when viral used to mean that literally everyone on the internet knows what it is? these days something is "viral" when it has a few thousand views on tiktok and ads being pushed everywhere, yet someone that isnt interested in the typical product wouldnt know it exists... so not viral at all!
Yes to all of the above, but my pet hate is the pointy nails. I think they're great for Halloween or a dramatic dress-up affair, but for everyday, classy looking nails? ....NO WAY! They look like a circus act, and how do you ever get any work done? Seriously...
Co-signing on so many of these!! I feel like Black Friday gets longer and longer every year lol it used to be ONE day of good sales and it has now morphed into 2+ months of mediocre 15% off discounts
It also seems Black Friday, like the advent calendars, aren't really good deals but cheaper products that are developed for this sale specifically. Kind of like how outlet stores started carrying lower end items to fill the stores once they became popular and their own overproductions couldn't keep the stores stocked. Some people exclusively outlet shop.
This!!! I've been so disappointed by black Friday/cyber Monday in the past years. I remember seeing sales go up to 90% off as a kid and you had to wait outside the store at 5am to get it. Now they expect us to jump at 20% off "black Friday" sale weeks before Thanksgiving when they just had a 20% off sale a few weeks previously and we know they'll have another one at Christmas time? Hell no.
i taught this was just the way the dutch market took over black friday and that usa still had all of the good deals, didnt know its a scam everywhere...
I love how you said you miss seeing the uniqueness because that’s the exact same thing I miss everybody is morphing into the same person and it’s so refreshing to see someone call it out. Thank you.💯
Lip oils remind me of those super cheap "glosses" you used to get in the early 2000s in packs of like, 5. They were clear roller balls and had little cartoon fruits on them. They were just atrocious, wet, and cheap haha
As a black women with pretty big lips and was made fun of as a kid and would suck my lips in to make them smaller, when the "plump lips" became a trend I was all kinds of confused because on me big lips look crazy but if you paid for your big lips with was on trend. But, I mean it was done with things like braids, wigs, being curvy and so on.
People want ethnic features that are usually sex related on white skin it seems (ie big lips big butt tan skin thick hair etc) definitely some racism involved
i have had bushy eyebrow since I was 5; I was born in 1973. I went through my 20's sometimes plucking my eyebrows (1990s). My Mom suggested that I don't. Not a day went by that someone either on the street or the hair salon wanted to wax my brows. My thicker brows suit my face. Yes, dont follow trends if they dont suit you and stick to your self if Everyday someone tells you do this. I am beautiful.
The same thing happened to me. Thank God for Brooke Shields and her eyebrows, lol. She saved me from all the friends chasing after me with tweezers! The good news is I still have my brows in my 50s, unlike many who over-plucked and don't.
She isn't talking about bold brows - she is pointing out the style of brushing them straight up and using product to make the hair stay that way. I agree with her that it's weird looking.
I've ignored all brow trends myself. My natural brows are black (even when my hair was only a bit darker than chestnut), bushy, and all I do is pluck the ones that clearly don't belong down on my eyelids. I don't think I would like my face with thin penciled brows; I should try hiding them with glue stick under foundation to try it out for fun sometime.
I love this talk! Everything you said from trends to filler to long nails has been on my mind. I’ve realized that I’ve become accustomed to social media beauty standards & I slowly started to dislike my own features. I recently found a TH-camr that matches my features (fine mousy brown hair, fair neutral skin, small lips etc) and after watching her for a while I started to appreciate those features in myself again. Wild right?
I love AlyArts because she teaches people how to style their uniqueness She's my fav beauty youtuber. She even has a whole video on the beauty of thin lips ❤
There's nothing wrong with getting filler or long nails. There's also nothing wrong with no filler and short nails😊 I think this is a year of embracing and self expression! And that looks different for everyone
@@lalasarchive1 correct, this is an unserious video. Everyone should do what makes them happy. However, I do think the age of plastic surgery has a profoundly negative effect on young people so that part I do feel strongly about.
@@StateofKait I agree, in part because the content had an influence on me and if it can do that to an older adult, what chance do young people have? The consumerism and influencer culture is seen everywhere, so keeping a hold of your core uniqueness is tough!
Slay queen. No filler needed, your lips look perfect. Since when are thin lips not attractive? I personally believe that lips without fillers are so much more expressive and show the personality and emotions so well, Da Vinci would agree. Make thin lips trendy again!
I totally agree and didn't mean that thin lips are the best, sorry for confusion, I said lips with no fillers. I specified the thin-lipped girls' problems because fuller lips are the standard now, and I'm upset to see many of my friends and my sister dislike their faces just because of that... @@TheNulligravida
Finally, someone who actually dislikes long pointy fake nails!! I hate how influencers in videos insist on tapping objects with them and gesturing with their hands to draw attention to their claws lol
Shocked that huge bushy lash extensions weren’t mentioned. They give people this uncanny dead beady eye look and totally throw off facial harmony. They’re like the 2016 blocky eyebrows of the 2020’s and I swear people who get them are lowkey addicted the same way people who get filler get addicted- like they develop dysmorphia and keep getting them bigger.
SoOOOOO true what you said about the addiction and dysmorphic obsession with them. I’ve never been able to put it into words but you did perfectly. Just the same as those horrible 2016 eyebrows… WHY CANT THEY SEE IT?!? And the extensions are actually harmful compared to the eyebrows!! It’s like they don’t feel beautiful without them at all. Which I can relate to! I don’t feel “pretty” without my lashes curled at least. But the look with gigantic, thick, JET BLACK lashes with absolutely nothing else on the skin looks so jarring and odd to me…Some can look good, but so many are distracting from the person and their own individualism and beauty. Which I HATE!
This was literally me two years ago. Slowly you get blind to them and think that “they are too thin, i need thicker!” at one point, you could barely see my eyes 😭
This is the first video of yours I have seen, and I just want to thank you for being so refreshing! I couldn't agree more. Trends can be fun, but not at the expense of anyone's self-esteem.
I totally agree with the overly dewy/borderline greasy complexion. I have dry skin, and I much prefer using skin care to moisturize and hydrate my skin then using a natural finish foundation that dries down on its own. My skin still looks healthy but not greasy and I don’t have to worry about powdering it since powder always dries out my skin.
Me too...And if you don't powder overly dewy makeup it can look like sweat & if you live in a hot & humid climate, you'll literally sweat off your dewy makeup within an hour no matter how dry skin you have.
I’m the opposite, I love looking like a greased chicken haha. I’ve had dry skin so long, I love looking oily by the end of the day. I don’t really use powder a whole lot either, I like just letting it come through
U should try ELF’s prime and stay finishing powder. It’s infused with primer (idk how to explain it) and kinda melts into the skin, especially after setting/ finishing spray! It leaves a natural finish and is only like 5 bucks at target. It’s very lightweight, only downside is that it comes in very VERY bad shade range but the pigment is sheer so maybe you can get away with it 🤷🏻♀️
Saame! Everyone like ”dewy looks naturally healthy” like no… it looks like skin with a face oil/cream. Like of you look at a child with literally perfect skin they dont look ”glowy” in the way thats trending now, I’d describe it as satin/soft matte
1000% agree about filler. Scary part? There’s a group of people on Reddit who DIY filler…. A side note though, you’ve quickly become one of my favorite beauty creators. I love your honesty and how down to earth you are 😊
I love that you said "I just want to look like myself."! It's very refreshing to hear a content creator say that & you are definitely the first one that I've heard say that. Thank you for the wonderful content in this video! Look forward to seeing more content from your channel. ❤
ok but the thing that drove me up the wall with blueberry nails is that blueberries aren't even that colour!!! I agree with most of these. Tiktok has done... interesting things for the beauty industry.
That's because they're "blueberry milk" nails, not "blueberry". The screenshots about the trend in this very video clearly show that. The naming of this one is heavily influenced by the popularity of Japan/Asia, where flavored milk is extremely common--or else the trend stems from there.
In Germany Advent Calendars are not a trend but a lovely tradition. And i looove them. Normally they are filled with a little chocolate and a nice, christmasy picture behind the door. Or a loved one makes you a personal advent calendar with 24 small gifts and its the sweetest thing in the world. But i definitely get why you're over these brand calenders! I totally agree with you on that ❤
Great points! An interesting observation is that outside of the US (at least in India and England), makeup products aren’t returnable unless they were delivered in a damaged condition so misleading marketing probably works for brands😭 And yes, I’m so tired of everyone looking the same! Social media used to be a space for creativity but now it’s an endless cycle of the same viral products.
I so agree with the first trend that you mentioned!!! I wish that all content creators would just do what they like and want. Instead, everyone is following the newest trend and just is getting boring.
And it's DRASTICALLY affecting young girls' sense of identity. What happens to us as a society when everyone looks, thinks, and acts the same? What happens to innovation, to art?
I don’t buy it - literally and figuratively - that all of a sudden many of the influencers are gushing over a product and they’re “obsessed”. Come back in 3 months after you’ve been using the product consistently and tell me how it feels and looks after 10 hours per day. Then, I might consider it!
I definitely agree with you about the filler. Something I’ve always respected about you and your channel is that I can see product reviews on someone’s natural features. It gives me a more realistic view on how something may look. Totally agree that our features make us unique and that’s nothing to feel ashamed of!
Thank you! Comments like that help reinforce that I don’t need to change my lips. I can’t lie, I get tempted to get lip filler because all my counterparts on TH-cam and Instagram have full lips.
I am tired of the fact that people should endlessly apologize for their personal opinion and explain that they are talking about their personal taste rather than attacking someone's wellbeing, family and children...
@@StateofKait You don'r need to. Your disclaimer will be ignored by those who want to take it personally. All you are doing is boring/irritating the average person
My generation isn’t the only generation to follow trends. We all do look the same. But I look at women from the 1950s, 1970s, 1990s, and tbh they all looked similar to each other too. There were popular trends in every generation. I just think social media is pushing it more than before. But then again, television, newspapers, and “word of mouth” made things popular back then too.
Thanks. I agree with everything that was said in the video except this. Generation Z didn't create questionable trends, Hayley Bieber isn't even from Generation Z, much less are the Kardashians. Sometimes people get too attached to the fact that social media highlights certain problems and forget that most of them are structural.
spot on commentary! as an asian american I would also really appreciate it if these "viral trends" such as the clean girl look, dewy skincare, etc. would at least give enough credit where credit is due and recognize that these are nothing revolutionary -- a lot of this stuff was pioneered and prevalent in east asian beauty for well over a decade. fashion trends too -- when I walk into a fast fashion store now, teens are wearing fits that look just like something I would have seen on yesstyle in 2012, and their makeup styles are giving "let me copy your homework I promise won't make it too obvious." the best part is I grew up wearing asian beauty but was always seen as weird for doing so. now gen z really thinks they did something with these "new" styles without actually knowing the source. like I love hailey bieber, but it's crazy that she is now getting credit for something asian girls created years ago🤣
Girl everything you said is ON POINT. Also loving the silver hoops! Edit: I fully believe that if a cream stick formula is not blendable and creamy enough to draw directly on your face, then it shouldn’t be in a stick form. The whole point of stick products is to draw them on! Which is why the only stick products I’ll ever use or recommend are em cosmetics so soft sticks.
I remember the Black Fridays of old. My dad and my aunt would go out in sweatpants at 1am and come back glowing in the light of dawn, victorious, carrying huge TVs for practically nothing. They actually had great deals then. It was a whole event, and people would chit chat in the lines, camp out even, and there was just general excitement. If you lived through that time, its super apparent how underwhelming and scammy it is now.
I loved the video showing you trimming your Sephora cart. I’m obsessed with Hannah Louise Postons content that explains her shopping strategies. It breaks down what you wear for activities and how often you participate in those activities. Mind blowing, total shift in how I purchase. Charlotte Holcroft’s You Don’t Need That series is hilarious.
I expect more realistic swatches from brands in 2024. Fenty's new concealer comes in 50 different shades but online swatches are not accurate at all. Maybe this is a marketing thing that tricks us buying the wrong shades so we buy more product until we find the right color
Don't get me started on artificial swatches. I truly do not understand why brands don't just shoot some quick swatches on an iPhone in natural lighting. It saves them money on returns!
@@StateofKait it’s absurd to me. I’ve been trying to figure out if I want one of those Armani satin lipsticks and the swatches are all artificial. They have video swatches, but only for some of the shades.
@@aviiannaI got a free sample size of Giorgio Armani's Lip Power (satin finish) in color #104 - way too pale for me. But I wear under other colors, and I have all new, nude-ish lip colors. It's a great texture, long-lasting and no fragrance or flavor.
I think some dewy skin is overdone but also think it doesn't take much to make some skin types/tones very reflective lol. Just putting sunscreen on makes me gleam. When I'm wearing a healthy layer, some people have indeed asked me why I'm so sweaty (i.e. children who have no filters) but then I just tell them I sparkle!
Real talk on the rampant cosmetic procedures and plastic surgery. I’m about to turn 31 in April and I’ve been increasingly obsessing about signs of aging lately and really hate that I’m doing it. I want to say I don’t care and just age gracefully and naturally but it’s so difficult as a women when a) we’re often valued socially based on attractiveness and youthfulness and b) everyone you see online is having procedures to look more “attractive” or younger. And the beauty industry obviously takes advantage of these insecurities to sell products. It’s a bummer and it’s been on my mind recently.
I agree. I’m about to turn 34 and have suddenly noticed permanent smile lines and skin sagging and it’s all I see when I look in the mirror, which is ridiculous!
I’m 62 and have had nothing done - not even Botox. I think after I turned 35 I made the decision to age gracefully, accept the process, and love myself more for it. My hair is now silver-white, my face has fine lines and some sagging. But I do my skincare to take care of it and I am happier for the acceptance. I want to be Iris Appel in my 80s. 😂👍@@StateofKait
I just turned 29 and I see a line at the corner of both of my eyes. I know I shouldn't obsess either but there's a lot of pressure to keep it away. But also there's stressful life events that I've had, I love chocolate and chips, and I don't exercise often anymore so I shouldn't be surprised. And I think our collagen production naturally begins to slow around age 27? It's all so frustrating, but I'm working on accepting it! I wish our society too would stop hyper focusing on 'anti aging' ( I hate that word, because we can't reverse aging). and looking young forever. I wish society would accept beauty past 27!
I am turning 43 pretty soon. This is my daily prayer: I am thankful to my body because it made my wonderful, healthy daughter from scratch only 3 years ago. I am thankful for my features, that I see reflected on my child every day: her radiant smile, her honest eyes, her chubby cheeks. Ladies, there is beauty in all of us. There is purpose. We are so blessed for being born women. Women are way more powerful than the system wants us to know. They want us worried and ignorant of our own power, so that we don't make good decisions. They want us distracted. Please, the bravest thing you can do is to love yourself. Then go empower other women so that they love themselves too. What this world needs is women loving one another, supporting and uplifting one another. We cannot do that when we are worried about our reflection in the mirror...
@@cristinagarcia6999Amen! You hit the nail on the head. I’m 61 (almost 62) now and just decided to be the best I can be as far as healthy and happy. I have also come to realize that people are so into themselves that they can’t look away from their mirror or camera monitor long enough to see how I look anyway. I just try to look my best self for myself. I love makeup but I just don’t care to spend as much time on it as I used to. I’m also trying to get rid of excess stuff in my life and start being more mindful of what I buy therefore I have unsubscribed from a lot of beauty and store haul channels. If I no longer appreciate, use, or love something I need it to leave my house and my life. Consumerism is consuming us and becoming a be all end all and that needs to stop. Sorry to ramble!
I’m always so happy when I find a video of a creator being honest about products and uses disclaimers like “look through your makeup collection for anything similar” or “don’t feel you have to buy this round of sale” instead of pushing to a purchase. If an influencer communicates overly happy, uses a lot of exclamation points and says something along the lines of “you have to” I will not watch another video of them. I want an honest review. I want to be inspired, not pushed. And since it’s my own hard earned money I spend I don’t HAVE to do anything. That being said, great video Kait!
Yeeeess!!!!! Thank you! I been saying this. Especially when I worked at Sephora, teen girls would come in just to buy something bc it's trending on TikTok. I would actually convince them not to buy it, unless it is something they truly wanted. I couldn't imagine wanting to copy everybody. I always valued my own sense of style, makeup looks, etc. It's lonely when my looks are "dated" but I'm in my 30's. I know what's flattering on me, and I appreciate timelessness over trends. Can't please everybody, and I'm not trying to. I don't need to compete with the youngsters bc I don't want to look like them. I want to look like me. I have clothes I bought second hand at a thrift shop since I was in middle school, and that's over 15 years ago. Still fits, and I still like them.
"Naming everything". It reminded me of the "selfie"... We were taking photos of ourselves back in the 90's!!!! Decades later, someone calls it "selfie" and it's like it's a new thing... Really p*ssed me of.
Totally agree with you on Black Friday sales.. it feels like they’re actively taking advantage of us when a better sale happens at a different point. I so appreciate it when brands tell you “there is not going to be a better sale than what you’re seeing right now.” Phytosurgence does this, for example.
I enjoy that you aren’t constantly bombarding your viewers with new products. I agree with all of these things especially the filler. We don’t know about long term health consequences and I worry about people with BDD. I thought I was alone on the not liking surprises.
Love this whole video and conversation about beauty! Everyone would benefit from being introspective about their beauty choices every once in a while! We all deserve to feel beautiful and have fun with our looks, but knowing your reason is important too.
I am SO happy that I found you. You are one of -- if not the -- most honest beauty product reviewer I've watched. And your reviews are actually good! I trust what you say. Thank you! I couldn't agree more about all of this. Btw, I ONLY wear thick sticky glosses that last. Why would anyone want to put something thin and watery on that will last for 30 minutes unless just for a picture (and it costs 30 bucks)? I need my makeup to last for at least half of the day. Buxom is my favorite for this reason. Gorgeous shine, shades, and fullness and they *never* dry out my lips. I'd LOVE a dedicated video just for good lasting lip glosses. :) Thanks again.
I got filler 5 years ago in my frown lines by the corners of my mouth. I regret it. The filler never left, it instead migrated and now my right corner of my lip is folded over and my lip looks smaller and the wrinkle is deeper. There's also a weird puffiness to the corners on both sides as well. I would not recommend filler at all.
You are spot on and you articulated each point so well. I had no idea that those brows are called laminated, which goes back to your first point! Ugh. Also I don’t want to look like everyone else…I love the bump on my nose; it’s the same feature my grandfather had. Last but not least, I find you absolutely delightful. Your content is so good. You blend authenticity, humor, and knowledge into fun to watch content. I trust your opinion and look forward to hearing your perspective. Thank you!
I am so grateful to have discovered you. Ever since Covid I have been waisting way too much time on Influencers. I am sick to death of Holy Grail, Must Have, Go To, etc etc 🥵. I am purging ASAP & setting myself free from the ton of products I have waisted my money on 🎉🙌
This is the first video I’ve seen of yours and wow, what a breath of fresh air! It’s so good to see a content creator with morals. When you talked about turning down a sponsorship because you didn’t believe in the product, I instantly knew I had to subscribe. Hoping you get out of this financial turbulence soon.
I have thin lips and my grandpa's Polish Jewish nose (which I love even more now that he's gone and I still get to see him in myself) and I keep saying one day they'll both be in fashion and I'll be trendy because I kept them (as problematic as bodies as trends are) 😂
There was an influencer who got a nose job because she always hated how big her nose was. Which is fine, her choice. I have a substantial nose - thanks dad - and I refuse to go under the knife (been through enough surgery so no thanks). I quit watching her because I could no longer relate to her and she seemed to shift in her personality afterwards. 🤷♀ I am hoping that more substantial noses are appreciated for the natural beauties they are. 🥰❤👍
I had a nose piercing and even though I loved the tiny diamond, the wire had to be tightened all the time and it seemed to be an internal booger catcher 😂 I let it heal up@@lynnkay417
@@lynnkay417 So happy that you love your nose! Your comment is 100% spot-on, it's something that runs in the family. It's our ancestry! On a side note, I just want to say... try a bindi sticker for a while because I pierced my nose and the hole that's left makes me depressed daily. :( I've had the hole for almost 15 years now... and I cannot find a way to fill it in. There's a punch excision procedure that can be performed, but it's so scary. Also, keep in mind that pores get larger with age, which emphasizes the size of the hole. I had very flawless glass-like skin when I got mine pierced. I wish I had known... :(
I totally agree with the pointy nail trend!!! I have students with both pointy and square 2 inch long nails and they can be used as a weapon! LOL I do LOVE what Black Friday used to be - years ago, I would stand in line at 3AM to purchase an unnecessary toy! I missed those days; talking to strangers, fighting with people (not really), etc.. The current Black Friday is no longer fun! I LOVE and look forward to all of your videos! When I get home from school, I make a cup of coffee and watch what ever you, and a few others, have put up. So, thank you!!! :)!
I get very glad about seeing an influencer who thinks like you and knows what they are talking and who are communicating with. I identify with a lot of things listed by you in the video and feel very excited to know that I am not alone. I am a Gen Z person, but I don’t identify much as my generation, it makes me think there’s some problem with me, but videos like yours makes me feel proud and secure about myself. Thank you ❤
You are a breath of fresh air! I love your personality & the way you think-you remind me of my own daughter so much! Thank you for being true to yourself & not jumping on the annoying trends which I myself cannot stand. ❤
Screaming crying begging for brands to stop greenwashing their packaging when it’s not actually sustainable and “refills” that are actually super wasteful. Also brands that aren’t cruelty free advertising their products as vegan?
I love what you stand for, this is the first video I’ve ever watched of yours and you are such a raw and real person I love the fact that you find natural is such a beautiful thing
😂😂 I’m so happy you reminded us of the time you tried out the extreme overlining on your lips. I remember when you first posted those stories, I thought it looked totally ridiculous. But then in a matter of seconds, I already adjusted and it somehow started to look normal??? It just goes to show how people start getting a warped perception of their own face once they get fillers. Even though everyone else can see an excess of filler, they may feel like they still need more.
Excellent video!!! Glad you included the wet skin look in the list, I was seriously getting annoyed so many influencers were promoting it. It doesn't look natural and neither is sustainable. Also, what you said about black friday is so damn true, I have fallen victim to it initially but as I started being more aware I noticed brands aren't actually giving us things for a lesser price, the price is still the same, they put another fake price which is usually slashed next to the real price and pretend as though they are offering things for a discount.
In the mid 2010's, i DESPERATELY wanted lip filler, but never could afford it. I'm 29 now and SO SO SO glad I never got any filler/botox/ You saying "I want to look like myself" rings so true for me now. For ages I would look at myself and only see flaws. However, I have been on a journey to self love and acceptance. I will never be this young again. I am going to enjoy my youth and my beauty while it lasts, and not wish for a face that isnt mine.
Bravo!! As aware as I am of these trends and "viral" products that are HUGE marketing and consumer-driven ploys, I find myself looking at my sizeable makeup and skincare collection, mostly begun during the pandemic, wondering why I have purchased so many things and why it's not enough to have a couple of items per category. Why am I so obsessed with following the crowd and spending significant amounts of money on every major trend? Why can't I be satisfied with what I have found to work well with my skin and its needs? Thanks for speaking about this subject with such a critical eye - also, I appreciate the racist angles you have exposed. Yes, yes, yes.
These are fantastic questions to ask yourself! Great awareness. Since I’m a TH-camr I do have a larger collection than most consumers, but I try very hard to keep it minimal and stick to a monthly budget. It helps keep me sane.
This is the first video of yours that I have seen. The way you speak makes it immediately apparent that you are intelligent and have a good sense of humor. Plus common sense and a sense of reality. And I totally agree with all your points. I hope you don't hold it against me - you remind me a bit of Jodie Foster in a very positive way. Anyway, you now have a new subscriber from Germany.

i remember before i started doing my makeup and knowing how subtle filler can look, i felt so bad cuz my lip look could never turn out anywhere close to tiktokers and influencers. now im glad for my small lips. i avoid watching beauty videos these days but im so glad i clicked on this one! hard agree on everything.
what a wonderfully refreshing take on beauty - i immediately subscribed. this is the first video on beauty i've consumed in a long time with original opinions, and that wasn't brainrot. it's so easy to get caught up with what's trending on tiktok, that we forget that we're going to have to actually use these products to create day to day looks, and maybe glazed donut face is not the best idea for a work day! i totally agree with all of these takes, and i genuinely appreciate you including BIPOC women in every statement you made. it really makes a difference to be acknowledged
I totally agree with these silly names of trends "blueberry nails," etc., just being teen to young adults' attempts to rename things (that have been there) to go viral 😂
As a Gen X woman, I found this video really refreshing. Yes, some of the age-related changes can be a bummer, but I do not care for the overdone look. If people like it, that’s fine, but we also need to normalize aging. The idea that we are no longer attractive after a certain age is ridiculous. I may not get attention from college guys, but who cares? I am not “invisible,” as so many articles claim. I also don’t need men to validate my worth.
My friend's sister came from Poland for a three week vacation and that's exactly what she hated EVERYONE LOOKS THE SAME! It's all marketing and the second you don't follow YOU'RE DIFFERENT and that becomes your thing even if you don't want to be different at all, you just don't want to buy the same sh-t as everyone else. I'm super guilty of getting into the youtube make up thing over COVID but after looking at my VISA lately, I decided I'm done. I am glad I discovered some brands, I'm glad I tried some of the more expensive products, but in general I think going to yoga and drinking my water does a lot more for my skin than any cream. Thanks for this video. I'm glad you're calling some stupid marketing out. I'm soooooo over it. I hate the fact that all these 10-12 year old girls already have anxiety about getting old.
OK I really love this whole video and I'm so glad you mentioned filler! I've never gotten it but the women that does my botox told me that studies show filler can stay in you body for TEN YEARS. She primarily only does lip filler on patients now (no under eye or face) because as you said, studies show it doesn't actually break down. So I hope more injectors enlighten their patients on the associated risks!
I talked my 25yr old GORGEOUS friend from getting lip fillers. She had a really good lips, but even if she didn’t I hated that she felt the need to “fix” herself in a way that could harm her down the road. Appreciated your video. A balanced, sober approach that I really like. I only selfishly wish we were the same colour season. 😋 Will keep watching 👍
How Refreshing!!! My Kind of Human Being in general!! Have watched you off and on for Years. Somehow the algorithm shifts and I miss out. Haven’t seen long form from you in a while!! So glad you popped up again. I completely Agree💯I’ll make sure I find all channels to support you. I’ve always valued your opinion and style.. Thank you, Love P.S. I live in rural area as well and save all the bugs etc as well🙏🏼❤️
I absolutely love your perspective on this and I agree wholeheartedly. As a 38 year old woman I’m so secure with looking like one. I don’t feel the need to go out and look like my 21 year old daughter and her friends.
Correction, there are TONS of articles about black and Latina women deserving credit for the “brownie lips” trend as far back as the 80’s. www.buzzfeednews.com/article/ikrd/hailey-bieber-brownie-glazed-lips-trend
Ps. It has taken me more than 35 years to get comfortable enough with my excessive facial hair to decide to try old school wet shaving with a drop-in double edge safety razor (just like my late father used to shave when I was a little girl) & I don't feel any shame in having to shave like a man. I use either unscented or a light neutral scented shaving soap & usually the scent doesn't hang around very long after I'm done shaving.
I’m 61 and have always been into skincare and beauty and fashion, so I’ve seen a lot come and go. I stumbled across your channel and thought wow, you are so beautiful and have such a classically lovely face because it looks natural!. It’s so rare to find an influencer who isn’t overly injected, and tucked, and filled And I’m not bagging on doing what one feels that one needs to look their best, But I agree that everybody is looking the same because there’s a strict standard of face that was dictated at some point and it’s one dimensional and subjective. Overly done, Big plush lips don’t look good on everybody’s face and overfilled cheeks aren’t always balanced. And much of this is to the standard that men set, based on exaggerations and doll like features. Anyway, I just love what you have to say about individual rather than a standard.
I really loved the title of this video, and I liked hearing you discuss trends in beauty!! It was so fun!!! You’re always so well-spoken and intelligent. I’m excited to see what “new” trends they can come up with in 2024 so we can hate them together
I am so with you on all these trends that need to go: first it was cold girl makeup, latte makeup, cherry makeup etc like it was so annoying: and everyone hashtag was that to get more likes. I agreed with you on every one of these trends. Those long spiky nails, just have to go. How do you even go to the bathroom with those 😂 Love love this video as always
Thank you for being one of the only honest "influencers" (not sure if you are but you've influenced me to subscribe) on the internet! 100% agree with all the things you said.
I haven't watched beauty content for a while because it always made me feel like I had to buy more products or be trendy and as poor gal I just cant keep up with it all, it's really nice to see someone beautiful and genuine be honest about products and unique beauty and not just in it for making money off of our insecurities. 💜
Sometimes that super dewy look is not optional. I have an autoimmune disease called Sjogren's syndrome. My body attacks glands in my body that produce moisture. It is systemic but shows up in the eyes, mouth and often the skin first. This means that my skin is far beyond what would normally be called dry skin. I no longer create the natural oils that get secreted onto our faces that protects the tender facial skin. None. Zero. Zip. As a result, people with this disease go to great lengths to keep their skin moisturized. I use a mix of lanolin oil and shea butter. This gives me a very shiny look but I don't care because it's better than the intense burning, itching and tearing of my skin that happens when I don't super moisturize. Venus Williams and Halsey have Sjogren's as well and they also have this super shine thing going on in photos and video. The thing is this: Sjogren's is vastly under diagnosed. People may be defaulting to this "look" because it just feels better. If I try to wear makeup w/o the extreme moisturizing, my face is flaky, dull and the makeup looks extremely cakey. I'm 55 so the makeup really settles into every little line and wrinkle. So, yeah, I get it where you're coming from. But it isn't that simple. Knowledge is power and creates empathy without judgment. ❤❤
Great content girl!!! ‘Fillers topic’ amazingly addressed. I’m a 80s baby and I couldn’t be more grateful that I wasn’t introduced to TikTok at an early age
i don’t agree with some of the trends you’re talking about, but i am really in love with your view on trends overall and i just found your account and i think i’ll be loving it! 😻
I’m with you on all of these. I still like the holiday sale season, but I’m glad the sales are lasting longer and feel less urgent than they did when it was literally one day. I feel like Sephora did us dirty for sure though. I wish more places would just have either a coupon or a consistent discount from like Thanksgiving to Christmas. But then there are also so many spring and fall sales events…honestly, unless you need something urgently, there is always a sale right around the corner.
Literally hooked on ur channel from just this video lol😭 I also agreed with everything, especially the lip oils because every other lip product makes my lips look way fuller and smoother, meaning lip oils just add some shine for 10 minutes at best
I just started watching your channel and had no idea you have hypermobile EDS and other chronic illness. I have hEDS and many other chronic Illnesses as well!! So nice to see a beauty content creator with the same things I have❤️
I am soooooo glad I found your channel!! I also have a corporate 9-5 and I have been looking for someone I can watch that is a little more relatable. I have found that in your channel! So thank you for providing quality content that gives an amazing example to people who still work corporate jobs and don’t always have time for all that fancy stuff. 😊
I just found you in my youtube feed and have to say it's refreshing to see such a realistic, down-to-earth mentality in an influencer. Thanks. You've got a new subscriber!
I don’t usually leave comments, but I want to support this utterly refreshing video. I agree with your mindset on so many of the things you addressed. It’s comical and like a breath of fresh air and makes me want to see more of your content. I like that you’re not negative, but you have an almost anti-consumer perspective that I also share. Honestly, it makes me respect and give more value to your opinions on products. Okay, I’m done now.😄
“I want to look like myself.” It has taken me 40 years to reach this same conclusion.
@@floslafleur You're amazing! You sound like a beautifully grounded and confident person! I wish I had that awareness when I was a teenager.
Absolutely. This trend needs to stop!!!!
Yep!!
Such a terrible trend especially since it ages you. Everyone who has it looks older than they should
Naming everything is definitely annoying!
Like I being a dark redhead is "not real redhead" and "ugly," but girls rush to the salon to get "Cowboy copper" hair, and it's "ThEBeSTreDHAir"
It's the exact same color as mine! You just told me that I look like a mop with it, but since tiktok gave it a cute trend name it is to die for
*sigh*
You got me instantly with the first trend, dissing the "naming everything" trend. Strawberry makeup? it's pink blush.
But it has freckles with red blush so it’s like the seeds of strawberries :) 🍓
Omg literally I see this on tiktok all the time it’s so annoying
@@emr5991strawberries don't have freckles, they have clogged pores

Honestly I don’t want viral products, I want good products. Viral is just a fad and people are wasting their money on those products. What shows a great TH-cam channel is that they don’t follow TikTok mess or influencer marketing , because it’s for children. I follow people who just find products that are really well made and worth buying.
Same!
Yes... for sure
Yes to all of the above, but my pet hate is the pointy nails. I think they're great for Halloween or a dramatic dress-up affair, but for everyday, classy looking nails? ....NO WAY! They look like a circus act, and how do you ever get any work done? Seriously...
As someone who has oily skin, I don’t get the wet skin look. I go out of my way to avoid looking like I have wet skin
As a dry skin person, yes, you won’t get it

Thank you! I call it the sweaty look
@@buddyholly4672 that’s the most accurate name for it!
Dry skin people are probably wondering why oily skin people are trying to make their face look dry and moistureless 😭 (matte)
Co-signing on so many of these!! I feel like Black Friday gets longer and longer every year lol it used to be ONE day of good sales and it has now morphed into 2+ months of mediocre 15% off discounts
YES, exactly! Now I'm so overwhelmed by the discounts I just don't buy anything at all.
Hell no.
exactly! the only advent calendars i care about are the ones that involve chocolate lol @@kerenkroll
i taught this was just the way the dutch market took over black friday and that usa still had all of the good deals, didnt know its a scam everywhere...
That's what I was thinking too 😂 atrocious is the perfect word for it. What was even in that crap?
I used some this winter when I was just at home. Helped keep things moist.
@@christinemuirgaen9906 Mineral oil. I know because I had a kid from the Scholastic catalogue to make them
Yes! Little girls' unserious product
THIS
As a black women with pretty big lips and was made fun of as a kid and would suck my lips in to make them smaller, when the "plump lips" became a trend I was all kinds of confused because on me big lips look crazy but if you paid for your big lips with was on trend. But, I mean it was done with things like braids, wigs, being curvy and so on.
I really wish someday we'll get to the point when our bodies are not trends
People want ethnic features that are usually sex related on white skin it seems (ie big lips big butt tan skin thick hair etc) definitely some racism involved
I’m sorry your beauty was made fun of.
i wish to god for one day where the ultimate trend is everyone feeling blessed and beautiful the way they were born♥
This really hurts my heart. Kids shouldn't have to worry about stuff like this. I hope you healed from this and can look at your body with love now.
i have had bushy eyebrow since I was 5; I was born in 1973.
Amen!!!❤ to the original commeter.
Wild right?
Wow, that’s powerful. I honestly am looking to follow more influencers who have acne and thinner lips so I can accept my features and flaws better!
I love AlyArts because she teaches people how to style their uniqueness
She's my fav beauty youtuber.
How about make "natural" lips trendy again? Not all large lips are lip-filler lips.

Same 😂
I get worried when makeup influencers have them. Always have anxiety that they're going to poke their eyes putting on eye primer.
I cannot stand the nail clicking. And lip advertising where women stick their tongues out.
To be honest, personally, I find them disgusting. Especially when I see the cooking influencer have them while cooking. I just can't 🤢
Ugh, me too. It's desperate, I think they're trying to do ASMR. It makes me click away though.
Yes!!! The false lashes #shudders
It’s very lightweight, only downside is that it comes in very VERY bad shade range but the pigment is sheer so maybe you can get away with it 🤷🏻♀️
I disagree, I really like it haha
Saame! Everyone like ”dewy looks naturally healthy” like no… it looks like skin with a face oil/cream. Like of you look at a child with literally perfect skin they dont look ”glowy” in the way thats trending now, I’d describe it as satin/soft matte
1000% agree about filler. Scary part? There’s a group of people on Reddit who DIY filler….

ok but the thing that drove me up the wall with blueberry nails is that blueberries aren't even that colour!!! I agree with most of these. Tiktok has done... interesting things for the beauty industry.
Hahahahah that is so true
I was thinking they look more like sky nails....
That's because they're "blueberry milk" nails, not "blueberry". The screenshots about the trend in this very video clearly show that.
The naming of this one is heavily influenced by the popularity of Japan/Asia, where flavored milk is extremely common--or else the trend stems from there.
@@redenavari yes you're right, I am just selectively blind I guess. I've always only seen it as 'blueberry nails'.

Thank you for addressing big lips and ethnicity, so many would not dare mention
In Germany Advent Calendars are not a trend but a lovely tradition. And i looove them. Normally they are filled with a little chocolate and a nice, christmasy picture behind the door. Or a loved one makes you a personal advent calendar with 24 small gifts and its the sweetest thing in the world. But i definitely get why you're over these brand calenders! I totally agree with you on that ❤

I think America has gotten caught up in Advent calendars that are devoid of tradition and purpose.
Good point!

Blush used to be rouge
Foundation used to be “pan cake makeup”
As language and people evolve, there will be new names for things.
Thanks. I agree with everything that was said in the video except this. Generation Z didn't create questionable trends, Hayley Bieber isn't even from Generation Z, much less are the Kardashians. Sometimes people get too attached to the fact that social media highlights certain problems and forget that most of them are structural.
Kylie Jenner is gen z though@@brunadeoliveira4586
spot on commentary! as an asian american I would also really appreciate it if these "viral trends" such as the clean girl look, dewy skincare, etc. would at least give enough credit where credit is due and recognize that these are nothing revolutionary -- a lot of this stuff was pioneered and prevalent in east asian beauty for well over a decade. fashion trends too -- when I walk into a fast fashion store now, teens are wearing fits that look just like something I would have seen on yesstyle in 2012, and their makeup styles are giving "let me copy your homework I promise won't make it too obvious." the best part is I grew up wearing asian beauty but was always seen as weird for doing so. now gen z really thinks they did something with these "new" styles without actually knowing the source. like I love hailey bieber, but it's crazy that she is now getting credit for something asian girls created years ago🤣
Girl everything you said is ON POINT. Also loving the silver hoops! Edit: I fully believe that if a cream stick formula is not blendable and creamy enough to draw directly on your face, then it shouldn’t be in a stick form. The whole point of stick products is to draw them on! Which is why the only stick products I’ll ever use or recommend are em cosmetics so soft sticks.
this has got to be the realest influencer ever. i never comment, but i want her videos to reach more people so here i am
Those were the good days
I loved the video showing you trimming your Sephora cart. I’m obsessed with Hannah Louise Postons content that explains her shopping strategies. It breaks down what you wear for activities and how often you participate in those activities. Mind blowing, total shift in how I purchase. Charlotte Holcroft’s You Don’t Need That series is hilarious.
I love Hannah's content! Her videos are so relaxing.
And I agree about fillers! I've always loved that you look like a real hot girl and not like every single other over-filled influencer
Wow, thank you!
I expect more realistic swatches from brands in 2024. Fenty's new concealer comes in 50 different shades but online swatches are not accurate at all. Maybe this is a marketing thing that tricks us buying the wrong shades so we buy more product until we find the right color
That and those artificial swatches where the color is just edited on.
I’ve never subscribed to someone soooo fast. Finally someone who is just honest and isn’t in it for the money!
My channel value is brutal honesty so I’m glad you appreciate it!
Fully agree, I only follow creators who are honest, transparent, and not overly sales-y.
Still fits, and I still like them.
good for you for steering those kids away from unnecessary purchases!
Thanks! @@StateofKait
"Naming everything". It reminded me of the "selfie"... We were taking photos of ourselves back in the 90's!!!! Decades later, someone calls it "selfie" and it's like it's a new thing... Really p*ssed me of.
I think cream blushes are good for mature skin. When your skin is dry the cream blush is great. The colours need to be better.
Thank you so much!
I would not recommend filler at all.
ur like objectively the coolest beauty content creator ever
I’ve never felt cool a day in my life, thank you 🥹
You are spot on and you articulated each point so well. Thank you!
Wow, thanks, Kate. That means a lot! And I’m so touched that you see value, love, and family in the traits that make you you.
I don't see the point in lip oils either. As a cyclist with long hair, I hate lip oils even more!!
I am so grateful to have discovered you. Ever since Covid I have been waisting way too much time on Influencers. I am sick to death of
Holy Grail, Must Have, Go To, etc etc 🥵.
I only do one sponsorship a month because I’m SO picky about who I work with. My channel values are honesty and authenticity so I have to uphold that.
I have thin lips and my grandpa's Polish Jewish nose (which I love even more now that he's gone and I still get to see him in myself) and I keep saying one day they'll both be in fashion and I'll be trendy because I kept them (as problematic as bodies as trends are) 😂
EXACTLY! Trends are constantly changing so we might as well just accept ourselves, dammit!
I hear u
I used to love Black Friday too! Thanks for watching my videos :)
❤
Oh thank you!
I love how you value uniqueness. If only everyone could see how uniquely beautiful they are without so many enhancements.
Screaming crying begging for brands to stop greenwashing their packaging when it’s not actually sustainable and “refills” that are actually super wasteful. Also brands that aren’t cruelty free advertising their products as vegan?
Ooooo that’s a good one
I love what you stand for, this is the first video I’ve ever watched of yours and you are such a raw and real person I love the fact that you find natural is such a beautiful thing
Thanks, love! Welcome to the channel
Yes! This is such an important observation
I'm 29 now and SO SO SO glad I never got any filler/botox/
You saying "I want to look like myself" rings so true for me now. For ages I would look at myself and only see flaws. However, I have been on a journey to self love and acceptance. I will never be this young again. I am going to enjoy my youth and my beauty while it lasts, and not wish for a face that isnt mine.
That is such a healthy perspective!!
And what if you are going to look old ?
Wait... you wanted filler when you were 19-20? That's insane. That alone says so much about the harm that's being done to young people.
"F*ck Black Friday!" Girl, take this subscribe! 😩😂❤️
I'm 40 in just over two months, and I've never had filler and Botox. Your video was a breath of fresh air!
Your lips are be-au-ty-ful ! I honestly don't get it why people pay money to make their lips look like they had been stung by a bee.
This is one trend I hate. Recently saw a girl I used to work with and her lips have gotten to the bee level. It's just sad
what a wonderfully refreshing take on beauty - i immediately subscribed. this is the first video on beauty i've consumed in a long time with original opinions, and that wasn't brainrot. it's so easy to get caught up with what's trending on tiktok, that we forget that we're going to have to actually use these products to create day to day looks, and maybe glazed donut face is not the best idea for a work day! i totally agree with all of these takes, and i genuinely appreciate you including BIPOC women in every statement you made. it really makes a difference to be acknowledged
Thank you so much! Means a lot
YES, exactly!! And then it just migrates around your face and makes you look puffy. I don’t want that!
I just subscribed cause I have a lot of respect for people who aren’t afraid to speak their mind. Please keep it up! 😊
Love how y’all are compassionate towards bugs and other critters! Made me smile
I will spend HOURS in a day trying to nurse an injured butterfly or politely escort a spider outside. Their lives are valuable too!
Will keep watching 👍
How Refreshing!!! My Kind of Human Being in general!! Have watched you off and on for Years. Somehow the algorithm shifts and I miss out. Haven’t seen long form from you in a while!! So glad you popped up again. I completely Agree💯I’ll make sure I find all channels to support you. I’ve always valued your opinion and style.. Thank you, Love
P.S. I live in rural area as well and save all the bugs etc as well🙏🏼❤️
Awww, thank you! If you don’t want to miss my videos, make sure to subscribe (if you want)
I absolutely love your perspective on this and I agree wholeheartedly. As a 38 year old woman I’m so secure with looking like one.
I don’t feel the need to go out and look like my 21 year old daughter and her friends.
1:00 Correction, that was a 90s look that every woman did. I’m not a Hailey fan but I don’t think she claimed to come up with it either…
I use either unscented or a light neutral scented shaving soap & usually the scent doesn't hang around very long after I'm done shaving.
i just wanna say i came across your video by chance, but everything you talk about makes so much sense oh my god, i love it
I’m 61 and have always been into skincare and beauty and fashion, so I’ve seen a lot come and go.
It's not a strict "standard" that people think they need attain, but a warped idea that has no relevance to beauty.
I really loved the title of this video, and I liked hearing you discuss trends in beauty!! It was so fun!!! You’re always so well-spoken and intelligent. I’m excited to see what “new” trends they can come up with in 2024 so we can hate them together
😂😂😂😂😂 thank you
I am so with you on all these trends that need to go: first it was cold girl makeup, latte makeup, cherry makeup etc like it was so annoying: and everyone hashtag was that to get more likes. I agreed with you on every one of these trends. Those long spiky nails, just have to go. How do you even go to the bathroom with those 😂
Love love this video as always
Thank you for being one of the only honest "influencers" (not sure if you are but you've influenced me to subscribe) on the internet! 100% agree with all the things you said.
Authenticity, honesty, and transparency are my channel values so you’ve come to the right place! I’m very critical in my product reviews.
Nails too 😂 totally agree 😂
i don’t agree with some of the trends you’re talking about, but i am really in love with your view on trends overall and i just found your account and i think i’ll be loving it! 😻
I welcome different opinions! This is all subjective. I’d love to hear what trends you want to see die in 2024!
But then there are also so many spring and fall sales events…honestly, unless you need something urgently, there is always a sale right around the corner.
exactly!
Literally hooked on ur channel from just this video lol😭 I also agreed with everything, especially the lip oils because every other lip product makes my lips look way fuller and smoother, meaning lip oils just add some shine for 10 minutes at best
Thank you so much!!
I hate surprises too! An people look at me like im crazy for hating surprises. I need to mentally prepared.
I just started watching your channel and had no idea you have hypermobile EDS and other chronic illness. I have hEDS and many other chronic Illnesses as well!! So nice to see a beauty content creator with the same things I have❤️
Hello fellow zebra!
this is my first video from you and i love that you escort the bugs outside lol
Awww thanks
I am soooooo glad I found your channel!! I also have a corporate 9-5 and I have been looking for someone I can watch that is a little more relatable. I have found that in your channel! So thank you for providing quality content that gives an amazing example to people who still work corporate jobs and don’t always have time for all that fancy stuff. 😊
Corporate gals, unite!
I just found you in my youtube feed and have to say it's refreshing to see such a realistic, down-to-earth mentality in an influencer. Thanks. You've got a new subscriber!
Thank you so much!
