  • New to me, this is a nice interview with Paddy McAloon and Wendy Smith of Prefab Sprout (interviewer is Sunie Fletcher). He talks more than she does, but she eventually gets into the swing of things. Music removed.

    He's very thoughtful and genuine about how he answers his questions, you can tell he's not putting anything on for the interview. You can see that saying exactly the right thing matters very much to him, but also that his mind is faster than his words. Great songwriting coming from a great character. No album is quite like Steve McQueen.

      I'm sure even Paddy would agree that he was underestimating A-Ha... he probably hadn't heard Manhattan Skyline at that point. Not everyone can be a genius.

    • @seksualusis
      @seksualusis 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@telsutton He talks about what he gets from the air-plays. And there A-Ha is about nice sweet pop patterns more, than about creativity of his kind. Paddy was doing great stuff back then, actually - I dig it these days, and see no stop for that so far.

    • @telsutton
      @telsutton 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@seksualusis - there was a time (end of 1988, to be precise, a few days before my 20th birthday) when I was one of the biggest Sprout nuts around; so much so that I ended up 'acquiring' Paddy's phone number in Consett in an attempt to get him to produce my band (Tracie Young of Jam/Style Council had just joined us). Unfortunately, after an initially fab chat with MartinMc, the following day I had a very nasty 'cease and desist' call from Keith Armstrong that scared the living daylights out of me... and talking of A-Ha's Bond theme, using my 'insight from retrospect'.... pretty good.

    I hope he realizes now that XTC made great records for 30 years. Their growth in that time can be compared to the Beatles, Brian Wilson. I do love Prefab Sprout as much. I just wish they had made MORE records. His accent sounds just like Roland and Curt from TFF. But TFF are from Bath, England. Adorable.😍

      Fascinating. I think it was because they didn't really try to be famous and didn't tour (they seldom did any shows).
      King of Rock n Roll was written as an actual attempt at making a hit ...and it did exactly that. So I think there's evidence they could have been huge if they chose to just write things that would get into the charts. Paddy is surely one of the best songwriters to come out of the UK.

  • @soylentgreennewdealtimeshare
    @soylentgreennewdealtimeshare 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    None of the other songwriters mentioned were great, although the McCartney character seemed effortless in stitching together some sweet melodies. McAloon was great, and, luckily, all the other band parts, especially the bass playing, were virtuoso and added layers subtley. The production was technically lovely, so it stays musical and cohesive even on very analytical systems.

    "Paddy McAloon talks more than Wendy Smith does." Well, Paddy McAloon is Prefab Sprout, just like how Dave Mustaine is Megadeth, Trent Reznor is Nine Inch Nails, Dave Grohl is Foo Fighters, Steven Wilson is Porcupine Tree, etc.

      @dw89music73 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@StonefieldJim4 He probably has. I mean, everybody has heard of the Foo Fighters, thanks to Dave Grohl being the former drummer of Nirvana. And the Foo Fighters started off as merely a Dave Grohl solo project (the first album was made entirely by him) before he recruited other guys to accompany him.

    • @StonefieldJim4
      @StonefieldJim4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dw89music73 Yes, Grohl is probably the exception, but by McAloon's own admission, from the late 90s onwards, he's had no idea who the movers and shakers are.
