Because you're in L.A, you're definitely being taken for a ride. Those prices are beyond outrageous. If you want antiques at a reasonable price, you need to get outside of the major cities, even into thrift stores in small towns where family members off load their deceased family member's belongings but have no idea what they're tossing out. My house turned 151 years old this year. I’m so lucky to have many antiques handed down through my family for several generations now. They look amazing in my house. I treasure them. I only hope my son will treasure them too when he inherits them. Antiques, especially family pieces, are wonderful stories in your home. Xoxo
Drew, the amber shades are made from thin sheets of mica (a natural mineral). Mica can come in many colors and was most used in early screw in fuses in electric boxes.
It is really good to see a young person appreciate this old stuff. I have a house full and my kids are not so interested. I hope you can single handedly reverse the trend to Ikea and the disposable lifestyle.
Drew, I have a art history degree with a special interest in architecture. This video just makes my heart happy, that you are bringing these treasures to an an audience of people who may know nothing about these amazing history pieces. I love your channel but this new journey is so fun to watch.

Yes! There are so many historical homes in Southern California, many of which can be toured. So much inspiration can be drawn from seeing the actual homes inside.
The good thing about antiquing is that the wonderful items in these fantastic emporiums have all had a "life" or several before they are salvaged. This means that they were quality items to stand the test of time and still are mostly. The price reflects the fact that they are still good enough to be wanted and loved by people and will be cared for and appreciated by those who buy them. You are very lucky to have such amazing places near to your new home and I hope we will see much more of them on your inspiring vlogs. Have humongous fun!
Had assignments related to historic districts before I retired. There are a high number of ways to get those antiques and architectural features for less…. if you’re willing to do the work. First recommendation is to look out for demos and remodels of older homes/buildings and get in there to more carefully remove what is being trashed or sold at a very low price. Another recommendation is to get involved with the Los Angeles Conservancy. They have a wealth of information and many fun ways to be involved and learn. Third recommendation in restoration is play the long game. Those doorknobs don’t all have to be replaced all at once. Replace as you can. Who knows… some demo project you find will dump more than you need. As some of the commenters say and you well know, the fun is in the hunt, exploring, and finding the just right piece. Have fun!
Yeah! What fun Drew! Antiquing is rich peoples way of thrifting Drew!I My best finds have always been at yard and garage sales. I have found some beautiful antiques!🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻Blessings, Laura
When I built my second home I used all antique lighting. I worked with an antique lighting specialist putting together perfect fixtures for the home. He rewired and refinished everything beautifully! I also found an antique clawfoot tub that I had completely redone. I found incredible claw feet… all four the same which is difficult to find. I had the feet refurbished and dipped and nickel. I found an old pedestal sink I had completely refurbished and installed. When I sold the home the couple that bought it removed every light fixture, yanked out the clawfoot tub and sink and put in all ultra modern boring junk😖 good for you Drew to keep as close to the architecture as you can… Your home will have so much more character! I love that you’ve discovered antiques!
It's devastating that they ripped out all those classic pieces. The old couple I bought my house from chose us because we're not landlords or developers and because I said I'd be keeping as many classic features as possible. Sadly we did lose some chair-rails due to having to have the entire hallway replastered but my taste is really old fashioned. Like museum level old. I love that eclectic mix of styles through history. I'm trying to do eccentric victorian millionaire style on a thrift shop budget. It's actually working pretty well though. It's amazing what people throw away because it's not the new in thing.
I am having so much fun window dhopping with Drew! I can't believe how full of items the antique stores are. I don't understand where they find all of it and wonder if they are making money, lol. No stores in Western Pennsylvania (that I've been in) have this much inventory.
I love the fact that you bought an old home for its character, and want to bring some of that back into the frankly awful job the previous owners did with the bathrooms. Thrifting is such a mish mash of things, it’s really all about the hunt, and it’s rarely antiques (which I believe by definition are things that are 100 years or older). Antique and vintage shops have done the hunting for you, so there’s definitely that cost built into the piece.
Genuine antiques being so expensive is why thrift stores are so popular. With creativity and elbow grease, an antique look can be achieved for a fraction of the price.
Thank you for taking us with you shopping! It was like we were hanging out! love it! So many ideas, not sure how you are not overwhelmed. I admire how you can bring all these ideas together to make it all make sense. I can not wait to see what you end up doing!
It was time for you to do this and now you know your options have exploded! Some of these places will hold auctions from estates as well as bring in entire containers from abroad. Always good to let them know what you are looking for. Have fun!
I knew a man that collected his beautiful antiques for his mountain cabin get-away for over 20 years, when he sold the cabin, the new buyers wanted all of his antiques to remain because of the charm and love he had put into the style. So take your time, enjoy the process of choosing the pieces that speak to you.
Wonderful to see your excitement in discovering these beautifully crafted materials. There is nothing like a handmade piece from generations back to really appreciate excellent workmanship - not gonna find this stuff at Lowes!
Come to Arkansas, you will need to bring a moving van. The prices of antiques are a fraction of the cost from the shops you visited. I would definitely love to see you bring your new home restored as closely to the original era as possible. It can be a slow process financially, but you will love it even more. Thanks for the fun videos.
Wow. This is going to be awesome to watch. Are you making lists of ideas? How are you organizing this all? I am overwhelmed and it’s not even my house. It will be breathtaking!! Can’t wait!!! 💃🏽
Such a FUN Video Thanks! I am stuck at home today, yet I feel like I got to go Antique & Thrift Store Shopping with you Both! Thanks! You made me Smile 🙂 Today!
I just posted that. He's posted videos at thrift stores where he's walked by many nice antique items. Of course, when you shop at an antique store/shop the prices are going to be higher.
His house and his decorating style remind me so much of Durban and the Midlands. Everything he chose would fit! I commented on another video that he should look at how the British Colonial style was done in South Africa. He was talking about the tile for the kitchen floor, saying the terracotta was too red. I immediately thought of the square reddish-brown tiles used on KZN verandahs.
Just a helpful tip……when antique-ing…..carry some boxes, packing paper, bubble wrap and a few old blankets with you to keep your treasures from getting broken on the trip home. 🌸😊🌸
Loved this video, amazing find, all these sources for your home! Thanks for sharing your antique hunting, so much out there in Southern Calif. You are very lucky to have all those amazing stores close by. Just wow!!
It was fantastic to see you expand your horizons at the antique shops and salvage, your reaction was much like XOMcKenna!🤤😍 You will never shop the same way again even if thrift/estate sales are more your budget. The way quality things feel and look in your hands will be your new point of reference! Have fun but mind your budget, it's easy to justify the purchases until the roof leeks! (Speaking from experience) 🤑😕
It's so cool to see how excited you are not only to remodel and buy stuff for your house but also your passion and love for interior design as well. Btw you're friend kinda looks like Doja Cat, she's so cute! Please, don't use that 100$ antique as a trash can LOL.
Some amazing places to do some antique shopping. Do you ever follow Restoration Nation, they are both on YT & IG. They needed vintage style tile & they find this company who can make them for you - any pattern & color. Thought to pass it along. Good luck with the new house!
I love that you’re so committed to bringing back a lot of the lost features to your beautiful new home Drew. Your face when you saw all the tile looked like a kid in a candy store. I really am enjoying all the content featuring your new home, and I can’t wait for you to work your magic on each and every room 😊
I love looking at antiques. I live in Saint Charles Missouri and Main Street in Old Saint Charles used to have lots of shops. Since Covid I haven't been down there so I don't know how many of them are left. Fun video Drew, thank you for taking us along with you ❤️
@@erikasmith8894 that’s such a true statement! I designed a backyard for a young couple and the people were just going to let their pavers and border (in extremely good condition) be “disposed of” by the contractor. The had plenty of room on their garage pad so we had it stacked there. The landscaper was furious I stepped in and I said it was my job to advocate too my client. He obviously was going to use it himself or sell it. I sold if for the homeowners and they were pretty thankful they had an extra 800$ for trees. Door knows, light fixtures of pavers don’t give them away.
@@WhirlyPearly Well your clients were and are in great hands! We need more honest people like you in this type of business. Not only did you prevent a possible theft, but you saved your clients money and they were able to add more features to their home. Bravo!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👌🏻
Check out crown city Hardware in Pasadena. I think they have old tiles too. There is also a shop that does estate sale leftovers that sells nice antiques for way cheaper. It is on Fair Oaks Ave I think. I can't remember the name though. Below Colorado in old town Pasadena. High end thrift store.
I SO ENJOYED ‘joining’ you for this week of your antiquing and perusal of architectural salvage! I used to frequent places like these for my shop (mostly 20’s to 50’s kitchenalia!) but no longer… sidelined by MS 8 years ago so this was WONDERFUL browsing the proverbial treasure trunks ‘with’ you!! ❤️
the architectural supply stores! i could have stayed there all day. it’s so good to see that these things are being preserved. invest in good pieces and oil paintings that fit the house.
What a fun surprise! I love a good thrift video. It would be fun if u went to Texas to see MacKenna or she went to estate sales with u in LA to hunt for both your homes.
The stores you visited are goldmines!! I live in New England and frequent antique stores often, I have never seen a display of so many organized priceless pieces. I would love to view more of your antique store outings😘
I liked going to Beverly Hills auctions in the late 60's, I think, when I lived there. Great boxes of old good items from the old movie stars. Some weird and not so good, others too lavish throw aways before trash day in the back of store alleys. If you were willing to use shards and bits. Good to have her taking you with her. Thank you for this engrossing search for the right tidbit.
YES so much fun to go to estate sales where they just piles up the fabulous goodies in baskets and boxes- I got wonderful fabrics, hardware, glass for just DOLLARS - and that is the trick to have CASH and only about $100 and see what you can find. Too TOO easy to get into frenzy of buying - so only $100 cash and small car to hold everything - haha - treasure hunt with limits
Drew, vintage and antiques are definitely ideal for you, along with your eye for creating DIY pieces. With vintage and antiques, there's a bit of history that comes with each piece. I find this fascinating! Imagine all the stories that your house will tell one day!
Go to Artobrick in LA!! their tile is Spanish, old World , antique and even mid century! they are having a garage sale this Saturday! you wont be disappointed. Dying to go get my tile there for my new home
@@lonefox these antique salvage companies might be interested in removing the vintage tiles you do not want - they could remove the 1st floor kitchen counter top as one piece -intact- for resell as kitchen counter. IF you decide to have any salvage company work with you - check their reputation, make they are insured and bonded- but yes great way to make alittle $$$ while having demo done for FREE!
I love antiques but I also love being able to recognize the real finds in thrifting. As always you are so fun to watch! Your enthusiasm for life and you work is awesome! You make me want to fund that passion in my own work!
I love that you're appreciating antiques and to see all the antique and architectural salvage that was saved warms my heart. It really should be criminal what the previous owners did to your place.
It is so great to see that you are looking to replace the period character of you new house! I love looking at antiques, so it was loads of fun going along with you today. There are so many wonderful items than need to be loved. Items that have lasting quality. Even if you don't replace all of your door knobs right away, you could do it slowly over time. Same with other things also! You are going to have so much fun with this house!
I’d love to see Drew do a “how to” video on how to go antiquing. It’s one thing to fall in love with a piece to the point that you cannot live without it. Okay, but just purchasing antiques because they are old.… Why? Before buying you need to know why. And then you need an education so you don’t get taken for a ride. You should have a good idea of typical prices, which manufactures/craftsmen/designers are good, signs of authenticity, etc. It’s a long list. But you don’t have to learn the hard way by mucking it up to begin with. You really can gain an education in a type/style of antiques fairly easily.
We still do trash picking here in Cleveland Ohio. In the suburb I live in they have a bulk trash pick up day and you can calm the streets and find all kinds of good stuff.
Those doorknobs are amazing! Thanks for taking us with you! There are so many things I fell in love with, literally, gasped when you showed us the tortoise doorknobs. I hope, at least, two find a home in your new place.
All that stained glass just knocks me over !! I love it and would love to have a big old stained glass window in my home !! Thanks for this video , I enjoyed seeing all the lovely old treasures.
I'm so excited you found such great antique and salvage places! Don't pass up "junk" shops, especially once you've trained your eye for what you're looking for! And you don't have to get all the door knobs at once! I'm sure you know all the flea markets too! This is starting to make me miss living in the Golden State, but not enough to move back! Happy hunting and doing!
Great antique shops. On Sunday, August 21 is the Long Beach flea market. Here’s the tip lots of these vendors are at the Rose Bowl but raise their prices because of the location. Always go early too, but some will lower prices at closing because they don’t want to pack it up or are on their way to go picking and want a lot of from for more new stuff.
Love going in antique stores!! There are so many throughout the state of Tennessee!! We actually have A thrift store and get alot of donations from estate sales, old homes, etc... so we get alot of cool vintage and antique pieces. Everything in my home is from thrift stores, antique stores or estate sales! If course its really small so I don't have alot but I add to it every chance I get😉 I would LOVE going in one of those salvage stores.. amazing!! I'm just ready to see what you do with your new home.. exciting!!😍
Marketplace and estate sales for antiques or vintage. The last place you went alone was amazing with the door fittings. I love to look around architectural salvage.
Thank goodness you are restoring the house back to some of the original Heritage. I love all those beautiful treasure homes we have in California and that's architecture is art.
I know! I’m really sh/t at making decisions. I can’t even choose coffee or toothpaste if there is more than 3 options. My (wealthy) husband always tells me “buy the best” but I’ve spent too many years ‘poor’ and my default is to opt for cheap or middling. My husbands choice is high end or _higher_

This comment describes antiques and vintage perfectly!!
You CAN find antiques in thrift stores, but they're usually hidden under several layers of paint and take a lot of work to restore, it you even can.
Drew!!! I just picked up the fall issue of Better Homes and Gardens Cottage Style Magazine and you have an **8** page spread in it!!!!!! well DONE!!!!
Genuine antiques being so expensive is why thrift stores are so popular. With creativity and elbow grease, an antique look can be achieved for a fraction of the price.
I imagine LA antique stores are more expensive than other areas of the country as well.
There truly isn’t! Authentic craftsmanship and wear + tear is priceless!
Honey you don't need lights the ones in your new house are to die for.❤❤
Wow. This is going to be awesome to watch. Are you making lists of ideas? How are you organizing this all? I am overwhelmed and it’s not even my house. It will be breathtaking!! Can’t wait!!! 💃🏽
How fun to see all of these antique stores! 😁💜 It's so nice that so many antiques are saved instead of just getting rid of them. Such character. 😊
Such a FUN Video Thanks! I am stuck at home today, yet I feel like I got to go Antique & Thrift Store Shopping with you Both! Thanks!
You made me Smile 🙂 Today!
Antique shopping is definitely different than thrifting!
I just posted that. He's posted videos at thrift stores where he's walked by many nice antique items. Of course, when you shop at an antique store/shop the prices are going to be higher.
It 100% is! I didn’t realize truly how different they were until filming this video
I'm so jelly Drew!!! We don't have any store close to these in South Africa. Loved the video❤️
So smart!
Great idea!!
Ive been obsessed with Antique and vintages stores for months and I’m glad you’re into them now too! I’d love more of these type of videos :)
Thanks for viewing and contributing I'll share some beneficial knowledge ᴊᴏɪɴ ᴍʏ ғʀᴇᴇ ᴄᴏᴍᴍᴜɴɪᴛʏ
It's so cool to see how excited you are not only to remodel and buy stuff for your house but also your passion and love for interior design as well. Btw you're friend kinda looks like Doja Cat, she's so cute! Please, don't use that 100$ antique as a trash can LOL.
This was such a fun video! Thanks for taking us with you!!!
I really am enjoying all the content featuring your new home, and I can’t wait for you to work your magic on each and every room 😊
love the candlesticks, Drew, can't wait to see what colour of candles you decide to pair them with
I love looking at antiques. I live in Saint Charles Missouri and Main Street in Old Saint Charles used to have lots of shops. Since Covid I haven't been down there so I don't know how many of them are left. Fun video Drew, thank you for taking us along with you ❤️
Yes, crystal door knobs were quite common in the 1920’s.
love love my crystal doorknobs my hooded doors r beautiful and old and we're Ruining them :/
I love them! I had those in my home as well. When I renovated my home, I made sure the contractor didn't take off with them.lol😅
@@WhirlyPearly
Well your clients were and are in great hands! We need more honest people like you in this type of business. Not only did you prevent a possible theft, but you saved your clients money and they were able to add more features to their home. Bravo!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👌🏻
The prices!
I can look at antiques for so long then it's off to thrifting.
Loved seeing the stained glass! Please do more videos with xo Macenna too!!! You guys could renovate homes together for amazing shows! ❤️❤️❤️
I saw what looked like a forest landscape painting that is DYING for a clean, but even still it's so pretty 😍
the architectural supply stores! i could have stayed there all day. it’s so good to see that these things are being preserved. invest in good pieces and oil paintings that fit the house.
What a fun surprise! I love a good thrift video. It would be fun if u went to Texas to see MacKenna or she went to estate sales with u in LA to hunt for both your homes.
They could go to Round Top Texas…biggest antique place ever!
Mackenna goes shopping every day or so it seems
@@shoshanachavab it kinda does! But since its for the pop up too, I get it. Plus, doesnt Romeo also like it to look for vintage clothes?
@@shoshanachavab McCenna does shop like every day it does seem like haha
@@jere5555 Oh! I need to try this Round Rock store you speak of lol
The stores you visited are goldmines!! I live in New England and frequent antique stores often, I have never seen a display of so many organized priceless pieces. I would love to view more of your antique store outings😘
So glad I discovered your channel. You are so talented! So excited to see what you do with your house!
I love how genuine you are Drew

That was fun!! I felt like I was shopping with you from my living room!! Those are the kind of shops that I could spend a whole day in 🫶
And I didn't even have to do the walking. But I couldn't buy anything. I so wanted to buy something or check out a couple of goodies. Great fun.
Go to Artobrick in LA!! their tile is Spanish, old World , antique and even mid century! they are having a garage sale this Saturday! you wont be disappointed. Dying to go get my tile there for my new home
Love the architectural salvage store with all the amazing hardware!
Wasn’t that incredible!

OMG I loved these antique stores. Nothing like that where I live in Australia. Thanks Drew for taking us antiquing with you, I had such fun. 👍👍☺💜
Macenna is the queen of vintage shopping. She knows her vintage, talk to her
I am thrilled to hear you’re going antiquing thrift shopping done with my favorite thing to do I work out at the Restore when I was younger
Omg ... i would go nuts romping through those houses of pure treasures !! Salvage shops !! YES YES YES

If course its really small so I don't have alot but I add to it every chance I get😉 I would LOVE going in one of those salvage stores.. amazing!! I'm just ready to see what you do with your new home.. exciting!!😍
The antique shops look like literal museums. Like museums of interior design.
An apt description.
Marketplace and estate sales for antiques or vintage. The last place you went alone was amazing with the door fittings. I love to look around architectural salvage.
I wonder if the town has any history/pictures of your home on file. It would be cool to see what the interior looked like originally.
Thank goodness you are restoring the house back to some of the original Heritage. I love all those beautiful treasure homes we have in California and that's architecture is art.

I would be totally overwhelmed in those stores. How do you decide when there are HUNDREDS to choose from??
Hence why I bought almost nothing!! It’s such a hard choice
You think there really Antiques? That many of one style? Please…
@@sylviahebert9038 They are 100% antique
@@sylviahebert9038 Think how many rooms huge old houses & mansions had to be furnished . Plus the look back then wasn't minimal, rooms would be heaving with decor & furniture. Georgian & Victorian era in particular.
Omg that one antique shop Liz’s antique hardware was like a candy store!!!! I would go absolutely nuts in there 😍😍😍😍
Just amazing! How many houses "died" for there to be so much architectural salvage? Mind boggling.

The amount of gorgeous old homes knocked down in LA for mcmansions is heartbreaking.

Another fun video, Drew! I loved going shopping with you and seeing those amazing stores. I go in "antique malls" that we have where I live, but they're really kind of glorified thrift stores. :) It's so awesome that you're in the mindset of keeping the vibe of your architecture.
