- When the hinge on the UPVC door broke I tried to replace with the same style hinge but found it incredibly difficult to match, so found a great upgrade to the new style flag hinges it works a treat

For the hinge sound, dont try to adjust the hinges, just use WD-40 Specialist White Lithium Grease.
i have used for doors hinges and windows. 100 % worked.

Ive just had the wind blow my back door open and a broom fell between the door frame and door and so how all 3 hinges have snapped. This video is going to be super helpful.

Top man. My door hinge isn't broken, but they are the old style and do not allow adjustment. Now either my door was not fitted correctly or over time has become misaligned. The old door hinges in your video look very similar to my ones. Those flag hinges look like the ideal solution to solve my problem. Cheers for that information. Nice demonstration.

As a service engineer I retro fit flag hinges quite often andf I can tell you you've positioned the hinge on the frame in the wrong place, yes the door swings but if you look at the video at 18.57 you will see the door sash is touching the hinge backplate already so you cannot adjust the door laterally to the left anymore in case you needed to, your mistake was using the same holes in the frame from the existing hinges, you should have drilled two fresh holes for the locating pins 5mm further to the left

Thanks very much for this clear and detailed worshop. I have upvc double doors, with bog standard butt hinges with no adjustment, and the master door is too high and smacks the keep of the thumb turn. It's shattered one and I was wondering if it is possible to replace them with flags.

i work with these every day of the week although we use a jig to fit them to get all the locator pins exactly where they should be! there's vertical & horizontal adjustment in these plus compression. eye balling it cant be accurate but looks like you got them working!

Does the jig you use only work for 1 type of flag hinge?, or does it work for any brand and style of flag hinge?.

@@ObbardProductions the hinge I use are called Trojan patriot flag hinge 2002. Can’t say I know the name of the jig but you should be able to find one if you can get a supplier of the hinges they will no doubt have a jig too.! Changing the hinges should be ok to do! Maybe take a photo of it & look up your nearest manufacturer of windows & doors good chance you could wrangle a hinge off them & some advice to fit it too! Hope this helps.
EXCELLENT, but you should have shown how to adjust the door sideways, the other thing is that this hinge has a squeeze adjustment and can be bought in 3 sizes dependant upon the thickness of the door profile, 16mm, 19mm and 22mm

Good video - thank you. Some years ago, I started to replace old hinges (same as in the video) on a 830 wide exterior door, with a lower steel-reinforced panel. On drilling for the first flag part of the middle hinge, I realised that the door plastic did not have a steel inner. I was therefore concerned that the 4 screws (plus two pins) per hinge would not securely hold the weight of the door in the long term, and start to sag. I backtracked and was able to adjust the old hinges more to get a good fit. In your experience is screwing into door-plastic sufficiently strong? It looked like is is, in the video.

How do you do this with an internal flush composite door? ie flag type but flush internally?

Very informative. I have exactly this issue but the uPVC repairers I have contacted will not retrofit flag hinges claiming they carry too many problems. Am I just choosing the wrong people or are there some doors which will not accept these hinges? My door has chamfered edge with an angle of 30 deg and is the reason why I cannot find a replacement butt hinge.

I would like to retro fit these hinges, does it matter the thickness of the door part that hold the seal. (distance from the door face and frame face) I have looked at a few hinge diagrams and this measurement isn't on, I would have thought it important, Cheers

I have a upvc door which is misaligned. But to get to the adjustment plate there are no screws to open the cap. Seems to be a little plastic clip. Do you know how to open these up?

you can support with anything the right thickness that will fit under the door, a folded piece of card or a bit of wood, even the wifes foot fits just right,Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠

I have a question given the fact that I have had training albeit by the fire brigade for roof ladder access... Why would you remove the new middle hinge to then replace the top? ... the brigade expressed the opinion always have as many points of contact to keep stability and safety? By removing the new middle one are you then not relying entirely on the lowest hinge?

Im a caretaker at a nursing home and they have 4 of these doors but really f'ing wide and old - all of them have dropped and one of them the top hinge has snapped exactly like the hinge you was holding at the start but snapped on the thin part connecting at the middle...ive ordered a replacement like you did without watching this but I have a feeling it won't fit and even then I wont be able to adjust the door as its dropped and leaves a gap at the top handle side and the lock wont lock unless you lift the door as its pointing diagonally in the lock case...my question is the hinges used to connect to the side of the door but now you put the hinge on the face of the door...will the face of the doors plastic be enough to hold the door? The doors ill be working with are wider and heavier and all have 4 hinges. So you dont need to take the door off even if its dropped a bit as hopefully you have adjustment after they are fitted you just fit them one by one then adjust them all? thanks for this video mate they would have needed new doors otherwise. Ill try and post a followup vid of me fitting them but would appreciate any advice. Like I said its pretty urgent as one has completely broke and is stressing all the other hinges, I've had to prohibit the use of the door for use only in an emergency but the staff there dont care and will prob still use it for smoke breaks...sorry for the long comment.

If you use some shims to allow some space on the underside of the door, ie wood or plastic packers, make sure it’s the same amount as level to the frame and paddle the doors up to slide your shims in when in the locked position. When all the hinges are fitted, use the paddles again to push up the bottom of the door to pull out your shims and it will return to where you set it. Then adjust if required. Can always Repair upvc doors, so many people say you need a new door when you really don’t. Great video 👍🏻👏🏻

Great video could suggest that you include the fact that there appear to be 3 different offsets available depending on the distance from doorframe to the surface of the door :- 16mm 19mm & 22mm ! Excellent information for the DIY man

My daughter's old but hinges are fitted outside on her patio french doors. The door has dropped at an angle and the adjustment is as far as it can go. The flag hinges look good but is no use on the outside due to the security risk, any ideas ?

@@flier9708 My porch door opens outwards and is fitted with Mila Evolution hinges which should be good as you can adjust them in three planes but my fitter seems to have damaged the sideways adjustment and the door keeps tilting.
I found this fitting sheet www.justdoorsuk.com/downloads/mila-evolution-hinge-adjustment.pdf which might be of use to you. I realised that the fitter also failed to fit the caps or the locking grub screws so have just sent for some off ebay to hopefully sort it. If not, I shall have to fit a new hinge. No wonder the old one doesn't stay adjusted!

Fitted new flag hinge door opens and closes find but key won't lock the door won't turn all the way to lock

A really good tip is to beat the locating pins off the door side of the hinge, this will allow more adjustment and will save you drilling and messing up!

My mother 1995 had the front house from Anglia windows double glazed there are still working no gas has leaked handles we have put two different windows at the back they are all gone already that's what happens when you try to use all these cheap rubbish all around

Coupling pins are short. It's just in the plastic
The 3 door hinges are not in line:
opens inward by itself.Tightening torsional force occurs.
But much better than the old door hinges.
It is recommended to use a drill template.
But it may not be clearly visible in the video.
