I know that this video has been release a while but I would like to share a tip for Layers in Ai. Just select in Layers Panel the Layer (F7 if you doesn't have it visible) then go to the Panel Options and look for Release Layers (Sequence). This will create sublayer inside de group, then you only have to take them out to the main panel and that's all. I hope this would be helpful.
