    Welcome to Aldgate! At the end of the Metropolian Line, right in Zone 1 in the City of London, and it's a lovely terminus station ...

    Thanks for another video which brings back memories as I used Aldgate for many years,. Also a big thank you for taking time to show the memorial plaque and to remember those who lost their lives in the Aldgate bombing. I was in the train in front of the one which got bombed. Made it to Canary Wharf and I will never forget having to walk back from there to Marylebone- all tubes cancelled . It was a very strange walk through the streets that day. RIP those who lost their lives.

    I can remember the time when Aldgate had a much larger 'Minories' bus station. This station was used for many years by Green Line Coach services 720, 721, 722 and 723, and also by some trolleybus routes, notably the very busy 653.

    I quite often travel down to London from the North of England to a client on Mansell Street, and always do my best to get a Metropolitan to Aldgate from Kings Cross rather than a circle line train... I just find it so satisfying being one of the last people to get off at the end of the line

      It is amazing indeed. I've sometimes wondered if a dive-under line (as between Ken.High-St and Earl's Court) could be managed? I think the distance between Aldgate E and Liverpool St station is a little less, but with modern traction moters maybe the slopes could be a little steeper.

    Hi Geoff I live in Aldgate and I'll tell you why those underpasses were closed. The management of roads and pavements was split between 3 authorities - City of London, Tower Hamlets & GLA (red route)
    There were a number of complaints about cleanliness, and also concerns about rough sleeping.
    It turned out it was too difficult for the 3 authorities to come to some kind of effective management agreement, so when the old Aldgate gyratory system was closed to make some new pedestrian space they decided to shut them down.

    • @michaelwincott
      @michaelwincott 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +29

    I'm on holiday this week staying near the London Underground and decided to finally visit the eight stations at the other end of the Metropolitan line I didn't visit in 2022. You weren't kidding in that episode of The Tube all those years ago it does take a long time to get to Preston Road if you start at Chesham
    I decided to carry on and correct my mistakes from 15 months ago to see if I could have still completed if I had started originally. I was at Aldgate only two days ago, so it is surreal seeing you walk the very same platform

I used to transfer from the Central line to the Metropolian Line if the timing was right (an easy transfer as you basically walk past the Metropolian Line tracks when you come of the Central line), but most of the time I just walked the 10 minutes it takes by foot from Liverpool street to Aldgate!

    Mention of Mile End has reminded me of something I have been wondering for a while... From the eastbound District/H&C platform at Mile End you can see the next eastbound platform of Bow Road station through the tunnel. Are these the only instances on the Underground where you can directly see one platform from another platform at two separate tube stations?

In Brooklyn,add Atlantic Ave/Long Island Railroad/IRT! Anyway,that Aldgate really is a New York City transplant,in the heart of London,and the books on London buses,that I read,never mentioned the Minories bus station was also Aldgate! Why,problems they assumed the readers,knew London,and forgot that the books,had far greater distribution! Thanks for an interesting video! Thank you 😇 😊!

    I did a scavenger hunt not long ago and one of the challenges was "photograph 3 trains at once at Aldgate". We thought this would be simple enough because there always seemed to be 2 met trains parked and you just need to wait for a circle to show up. Unfortunately when we got there one of the mets pulled away and it looked like another wouldn't arrive for a little while. THANKFULLY 2 circle trains showed up at once, which was really lucky bc we were fully aware they only arrive once every 10 minutes.

    Living in Whitechapel, the fact that you cannot change between the District and Metropolitan Lines can be really frustrating, especially as they are within feet of each other. When the Hammersmith Line has problems it can be really difficult to go towards Liverpool Street from Aldgate East, even on good days it can take up to 20 minutes. It is a shame they cannot open an underground walkway between the two Aldgates, or move the Metropolitan termination to Whitechapel, where there is space.

    Do the trains have to come in at a slow pace? In NYC, if I understand it correctly, stations like that have to be entered at like walking speed. If there is a run out or tail tracks (?) they can enter at full speed.
