Hearing how he was so eager to play bass without even knowing what a bass was and then becoming one of the most well known bass players in the world is incredibly inspirational
It's true. It's literally like he started at the very bottom and made it to the top of his art and craft. And he didn't just get really good at it, he got brilliant because he created a new style that hadn't existed before him.
I hope Hooky realises that he has inspired loads of people to pick up a bass. It was bands like Joy Division, the Stranglers, Cure, the bunnymen who banged out great bass lines that led many great songs.

You know, I'm only 34, but Joy Division has been my favorite band since I was 14/15 when I accidentally discovered Disordee in a record shop, as I got older New Order started filling in the gaps in my various musical obsessions, 4 Manchester and Salford boys changed the world and I get so envious of you elder lads who got to be there, long live Hookey!

I learned to play mostly to Cure records which while not quite Hooky, tend to also rely on melodic lines (later on i also played a fair amount of JD) and while my style is not purely melodic, it is still VERY melodic and all i've never ached for people wanting me in their bands. In fact the greatest compliment i ever got, i'd left this band cause creatively it wasn't enough my thing, they replaced me with a VER Y good bassist, i mean on a technical level. I remember hearing a few tunes and thinking god, i couldn't play like this. well eventually the frontman of the band told me that he missed my style and how i added to his music in ways the technically more proeficient player couldn't.
Great comment around 30mark: "Get together with your mates and jam". Been in bands, and writing at home for years - you can practice all you want at home, but the moment you're with a number of other loose canons that's when the real magic happens: nothing like it, joyous.
What an amazing interview. I saw Peter Hook, back in 2010 at the Sinner's Day festival in belgium. I was 16 back then and was amongst the youngest there. As a bass player, I'm a huge fan. He played some dance music and I remember clearly that he saw us dancing and happily waved to us with the biggest smile ever. I was so thankfull to be able to hear him and he seemed thankfull that we were there. Amazing man, amazing musician and bassist ! (Peter, if you ever read this : Thank you)
One of my most favourite bands ever, peter hook is a legend on bass, Ian curtis would have been so proud of the band after his sad departure. God bless Joy division
@@rahawk69 I doubt that Rob did know Curtis that well but it stands to reason that he would've been proud of records like "Shellshock", "State of the nation" and their crowning glory, "Turd in motion".
One of my favorite bass players of all time. Sad to see that he and so many other awesome bassists never got and will never get the true recognition they truly deserve because the bass community has been stagnant and stale in their worship of the same and very small handful of players they've been glorifying for decades. As if there are no other players worthy of recognition or praise simply cause they're not playing a million notes per second or slapping at a million miles an hour. You'd think the bass community would praise, recognize and celebrate great players from all genres and styles but unfortunately, no. If you don't belong to that small circle of over-mentioned "idols", you might as well be invisible and silent...
This x1000. The value on technique over songs is something that really bugs me. Music is about the songs and connecting with them, not 16th note, fusion workouts at 180bpm. I'd rather listen to someone like Hooky over the usual boring suspects, every day of the week.
Peter Hook and his unique signature bass guitar sound. Love it. I first heard it in NO's Round and Round during my teenage years in 1989 . Blew my mind.
It was the lock down when I began playing the bass. I'm an old guy and I'm not very technical. I'm just trying to find my voice. What makes me "me". I'll try not to overthink it but just create and have fun.
I wish Barney and Pete would just get together, surely this whole covid shit is enough to tell them life is too short. I love hearing both speak about music.

@@deaddoll1361 Hopefully they learn that their lives are at a point now where time is nearing an "end point" faster and faster and that using "not liking someone" as a reason to not let bygones be bygones is a really childish and pointless way of thinking - especially when you have a recognized and loved body of work and a faithful audience to go with it all. At least Hooky seems to have learned that it's o.k. to recognize and acknowledge his past friendship with Bernard despite it's ups & downs. He credits him whenever he gets a chance now and even made heartfelt dedications to him and Steven, while his former bandmates still seem childishly reluctant and hesitant to even mention him by name, much less to give him his due credit for his past work with them. Seems more and more that the most resistance is coming from the "other camp", not Hooky's. So, at least it seems like Hooky is learning and getting experience out of all this. Something tells me he is cool enough to just say, "Yeah...o.k." if he were to be presented with an opportunity to play with his former bandmates, while the others would still say, "Nah.. We're good". In my opinion, New Order just isn't the same without Hooky. Never will be.

Not only do I love Peter Hook.. but I love Yamaha instruments, too. My first drum set was a early 90s Yamaha rock tour custom. I still play and own my yamaha absolute kit. Guitar wise I own a yamaha 1977 sg2000.. Carlos Santana turned me onto that guitar. Now I must seek out a Yamaha bass. Peter Hook and Lemmy from Motorhead are my favorite bass players who approach bass more like a guitar when it comes to playing chords.
The book he wrote was excellent too, highly recommend it, you guys that aren't really into reading should give it a try, you may find a new love for books.
He's written three that I've read. One on JD, one on NO and one on The Hacienda. All great reads. I've read loads of rock bios and stuff but Hooky's books are next level. Great author as well as being, well, Hooky.
Peter Hook is a class act. He must have told the history of JD and his intro into being a musician a thousand times, but he is always prepared to generously relay the history without coming across as “oh god, I don’t have to talk about this again do I?”. He could have given Steve’s drumming a shout out at least once though - they wouldn’t have been half the band they were without Steve, the sole virtuoso in the band.
It’s amazing how this seemingly humble pleasant sweetheart of a gentleman seen in this great interview had (and of course still has) such a massive impact on modern day music, from JD and post-punk to those wildly influential early New Order years of Low Life and Brotherhood and Substance through to the birth of Acid House and Ibiza and Technique and on and on. God bless Peter Hook - the quintessential rock star.
that is no overstatement. certainly among the most iconic bass players who has taken significant part in shaping the music of the end of the 20th century.
This guy is so great. Absolutely just made it all up with his mates. And it was fantastic and became iconic. I was a tiny child when this music was originally made, and I still love it.
New Order are my favourite group and I've heard a million interviews with them but this is the absolute greatest. Not only that , but showcases that nobody has a bank of memorable bassli es as Hooky has.

I really enjoyed this interview. I've probably watched every Peter Hook interview on TH-cam and I admire how he tells the same stories but always sounds interested in giving his answers. I'm also impressed how there's also something new to learn from him. Credit to the interviewer as well for asking a good load of questions - including some new ones - and seeming genuinely interested in the answers.
Peter Hook took playing bass to a new level, instead of bass being a background sound and following drums, he made bass playing much more prominent and creating a new sound, this is why joy division’s music were far more advanced and creating a sound that no bands were creating at the time. They changed music, and I sincerely believe that had they reached America music as we know it would have been altered. Incredible musician and innovator.

Really nice to hear Hooky give his former bandmates their due credit for their contributions to the music and even to his sound, even when they seem to be reluctant to even refer to him by name in many interviews they've given and still give. Hope the next step is to just let bygones be bygones and to just re-unite and play music together, even if just temporarily on special occasions like anniversaries and such.
i love hooks' hooks and honesty. everyone seems to sweeten it all more than him. living on a world were everyone shares their strengths and hides their lower points, seeing Master Hook be so open about things is a relief for al of us, aint it? the telling of how he got the bass, am i the only one who misses that kind of "happening" music scene?
What’s interesting is these guys who just walk into the shop to buy their first guitar and not knowing anything about it. Mike Watt got his first bass not knowing what it was and described not knowing anything about tuning and just preferring the strings to be slack. It’s inspiring, really, giants made in a day of a snap decision and it changed their lives.

A really interesting interview. I played a BB1200 passive for about 8 years after my Wal got stolen. It never let me down. The thru-neck stayed solid and the tone was well balanced. I kept it until I found another Wal that I could afford.
I've a loan of my cousin's custom built fretless Wal bass. I'm a little scared to play it but I couldn't imagine what it would feel like to have a bass like that stolen. You have my sympathy.
Loved this interview, eventually it will be time to push back and musicians must play there part.. there will be a story to be told and truths must be outed and recorded for posterity. Good luck

Brilliant interview. Such an amazing body of work he's responsible for. And he comes across as such a regular guy that its hard to reconcile him with the figure you've seen in a million film clips and concerts, seen movies about and heard so many incredible stories of.
Saw Joy Division orchestrated in Sydney, and yeah, go see it if you ever get the chance. Hooky is the best story teller. Love the bass. Would love to get my hands on one!
The discovery of music and moving towards making it are beautiful stories from Pete hook to Dave grohl I mirrored their rudimentary paths just making noise in any way I could just to know I could do it... doing for a hobby is such a relaxed and rewarding existence... zero compromise
Thank you Peter . First time I got my first tape of new order was brotherhood in Lima Peru back in 88 and then boom technique blow my mind . That was the mix I was looking in my teenager years mix of techno with guitars .
I have a BB1100s Yammy and its great for slapping and picking with its short scale fret board. I've had my baby for close on 30 years and it's still great! Tone and action is second to none and blows the P-Bass away in my opinion. I shall be cremated with my bass.

My most important band forty years ago and still my most important band to this day.
Saw both New Order and Peter Hook and the light this year. Feel very blessed for that but i wish to see them reunite for the rrhof if they get in

Really nice to hear Hooky give his former bandmates their due credit for their contributions to the music and even to his sound, even when they seem to be reluctant to even refer to him by name in many interviews they've given and still give. Hope the next step is to just let bygones be bygones and to just re-unite and play music together, even if just temporarily on special occasions like anniversaries and such.

What’s interesting is these guys who just walk into the shop to buy their first guitar and not knowing anything about it. Mike Watt got his first bass not knowing what it was and described not knowing anything about tuning and just preferring the strings to be slack. It’s inspiring, really, giants made in a day of a snap decision and it changed their lives.
Was supposed to see the light earlier this year. Fuck covid! Hookys books about joy division and new order are really worth reading for anyone that was interested in this interview.

A really interesting interview.
I played a BB1200 passive for about 8 years after my Wal got stolen.
It never let me down.
The thru-neck stayed solid and the tone was well balanced.
I kept it until I found another Wal that I could afford.
I've a loan of my cousin's custom built fretless Wal bass. I'm a little scared to play it but I couldn't imagine what it would feel like to have a bass like that stolen. You have my sympathy.
Loved this interview, eventually it will be time to push back and musicians must play there part.. there will be a story to be told and truths must be outed and recorded for posterity. Good luck

Brilliant interview. Such an amazing body of work he's responsible for. And he comes across as such a regular guy that its hard to reconcile him with the figure you've seen in a million film clips and concerts, seen movies about and heard so many incredible stories of.

Saw Joy Division orchestrated in Sydney, and yeah, go see it if you ever get the chance. Hooky is the best story teller. Love the bass. Would love to get my hands on one!
The discovery of music and moving towards making it are beautiful stories from Pete hook to Dave grohl I mirrored their rudimentary paths just making noise in any way I could just to know I could do it... doing for a hobby is such a relaxed and rewarding existence... zero compromise

Thank you Peter . First time I got my first tape of new order was brotherhood in Lima Peru back in 88 and then boom technique blow my mind . That was the mix I was looking in my teenager years mix of techno with guitars .

I have a BB1100s Yammy and its great for slapping and picking with its short scale fret board. I've had my baby for close on 30 years and it's still great! Tone and action is second to none and blows the P-Bass away in my opinion. I shall be cremated with my bass.
