I never get tired of hearing the great Brent Musberger setting the stage for a big game. You are looking live! Brent's line late in the 4th quarter of " You are watching what greatness is all about!" Perfectly encapsulates what Larry Bird's career was all about. Go Celtics!
That was a great series. I was not the biggest Boston fan but, Bird was a beast. The Celtics overall had the better team. Props to Atlanta. Nique’ gave his all!!!!
This was Wilkins greatest chance to get to a finals. People only remember him as a dunker and scorer, but from the mid to late 80's, he was the best player on some good playoff contending Atlanta Hawks teams. Unfortunately, at that time they had to deal with Bird's Celtics, Isiah's Pistons, Brad Daugherty and Mark Price's Cavs, and this young up and coming team from Chicago led by that young Jordan guy. Not even to mention Ewing's Knicks, Barkley's 76ers and Reggie Miller's Pacers who were improving every year at that time as well.
Facts and you forgot to mention the Milwaukee bucks team who was knocking on the door as well the east was just hard-nosed gritty yet fun to watch and your right I was just chatting with my pops about this series a few weeks back saying this was his chance to get to the finals and play those Lakers but back then we all knew if it's a game 7 in Boston it ain't gonna happen they didnt close out in game 6 and it was down hill but this game 7 duel was the best ever to date by two great players bird and nique that forth qtr was awesome
@@29mailliw Yo I forgot about Milwaukee with Moncrief, Terry Cummings and Ricky Pierce! Yea they were right there in the mix too! The East was crazy loaded in the mid to late 80's.
Easily one of the greatest playoff games and Gm.#7's in NBA history and, arguably THE greatest 4th quarter of any playoff game in NBA history! This game was electric from the beginning-tip until the final buzzer! It had all the necessary ingredients: raucous crowd, great players, close game with constant ties/lead changes, immense pressure, and clutch, big shot-making by two HOFers! A game that will live-on in perpetuity in the minds of all dedicated NBA fans!
I remember watching this game. This ended up being a Bird career highlight but unfortunately you could tell that the '88 Celtics were not the dominant team they had been and Bird and Co. would never get back to the Finals. Imagine what a healthy Len Bias would have done for this Celtics team, the minutes that it would have spared their best players, the injuries that might not have happened. For me it's the greatest NBA 'what if?' after the '84 draft
He scored 12 in the first half and 20 in the 4th quarter. 34 total. Bird's Achilles were giving him trouble and, as the next day's paper said, bronchial pneumonia. But he got'er done in the clutch. 😁 ☘️ Legend
An Open Court episode (with "Human Highlight Film" Dominique as one of panelists) shared the Hawks led 3-2 but lost in Atlanta to close it out. In the middle of g7, 'Nique said Kevin Willis did a gesture that woke up Larry Bird that led to 4q duel. The 80s, Dominique-led Hawks is another case of Playoff favorites and colorful team of that period that failed to get it done. They're just happy to be there, but not serious enough to be Title-seekers. It didn't help 'Nique was snubbed in the 50th Anniversary Team (1996), whom he quipped as "a total disrespect." He was there in the 75th Team (2021), but it feels like too little, too late.
This would be the last decent shot the Nique Hawks would have as after this they brought in Moses Malone and Reggie Theus thinking it would get them over the hunp, but got upset by the Bucks and then missed the playoffs and Fratello left. After that game 5 win, Fratello's playoff record the rest of the way was 4-25
Wow what an upload, thanks. I got some others. Game 6 of this series. Game 5 1987 Warriors at Jazz Game 1 1989 Sonics at Lakers Game 1 1989 Suns at Lakers Game 5 1990 Suns at Jazz Game 1 1990 Suns at Lakers Game 6 1990 Blazers at Suns Game 2 1997 Knicks at Heat?
What a game. No great job of condensing the highlights and editing. My favorite game is when the Atlanta Hawks players are falling all over themselves on the bench watching bird tear it up.

“You are watching what greatness is all about”
One of the best one liners in sports commentating history. What a game.
Absolutely Chris!🏀🇺🇸😉
I watched that game on TV. That fourth quarter was like watching Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday shoot it out.
Ainge, McHale, Bird, Wittman, and Rivers all became NBA head coaches. A lot of high IQ play on this floor.
That was a great series. I was not the biggest Boston fan but, Bird was a beast. The Celtics overall had the better team. Props to Atlanta. Nique’ gave his all!!!!

Specifically, Game 6 of this series was Wilkins' missed chance. Up 3-2 with a home game vs. Boston.
The east was loaded with taken in the 80’s and early 90’s.
@@rss83073SFBayAreaYeah those are once in a career 🏀
The NBA on CBS promo theme harkened to my wonderful childhood and gave me chills!

I miss those days where it was not 80% 3 pointers...
CJ,the concept of team basketball,what a novel concept!🏀🇺🇸😉
Amen and amen.
Man there wasn’t an event Brent Musburger wasn’t at for CBS. 😂
He was the No. 2 PBP for CBS. Stockton and Cunningham were No. 1 and had Jazz/Lakers that same weekend.
@@maxflipper34 ahhhh thanks!
Loved his College football commentary as well
Crazy part was, I think Bird scored most of his points in the second half. He really didn't get going until mid 3rd quarter
He scored 12 in the first half and 20 in the 4th quarter. 34 total.
Bird's Achilles were giving him trouble and, as the next day's paper said, bronchial pneumonia.
But he got'er done in the clutch.

19:40 . I know I shouldn't laugh. But it's just too good 🤣 😂
Plus the freeze frame of Doc's smiling face 🤣
it was funny so i'm laugh lol
He got rocked 🪨 🏀
R.I.P. Reggie
I think this is the first time I've seen a CBS tv version rather than a Hardwood Classics or ESPN Classics version
👍
First time I’ve seen the NBA on CBS intro for this game
Would have been VERY interesting to see how an ATL/DET East Finals plays out (they had traded playoff series against each other in ‘86 and ‘87)
Blow For blow till the end.. what beautiful basketball
It's my wish (and probably other 80's NBA fans') being fulfilled. Thank you MDBBall 😊
👍
Got Any Chicago Bulls Basketball
Nique averaged averaged 30.7 that year, 31.2 in the playoffs.
a classic game...the duel
The Duel!

Bird thought Dominique should have been included in the 50th too.

The Hawks had a chance to close this series out at home in Game 6, but blew it.
DAMN , Larry Joe Bird was without doubt MR . FUNDAMENT 🎩🎩.
Great Video😎😎😎
👍
we jus gon ignore my manz wit5h the black eye lol
Best game of all times, hands down
Dominque played just as good as Michael Jordan Alot of times.
26:15 is what separated MJ from Nique
I can't believe it's been over 36 years,the lifespan of a Presidential Candidate!
People always like the nba on nbc of course because it’s Mikes era but nba on nbc intros were awesome
Bird dropped 20 in the 4th quarter!!

28:00. Actually, it is goaltending. You’re not allowed to smack the backboard.

Oh yeah that 60 point game in New Orleans lmao I remember that.
Bird played with painful bone spurs in both feet. Missed the next season because of surgery on both.
Put This Game On NBA TV Hardwood Classic On TV
Refs helped the Celtics at the end. Wasn't a foul or goltending
It looks like Ainge would have gotten his own rebound if the whistle hadn't blown and put it back up so....
Whittman was was getting buckets all game. I think he only missed one.😲
