Also, I copied the principle of the wolf spawner, albeit with my lame no-star wolves. Had the bottom rail at 3m rather than your 4m, and eventually shortened it to 2m and a 1m gap in the middle. For ease of access etc I dropped the whole thing down 1m, and put floors 1m above, with a door on each SIDE to push things off the beam if needed, rather than the front to back you've been trying. Worked well. For feeding I put a wall up across the middle of the floor above them and bounced meat off that onto the floor above them from both sides. No problems. 14 wolves from 22 meat, including experiments.

Push the wolf up a stair/ceiling that 'drops' them into the 1x1 from above. the second wolf you'll need to jump on and move around to 'jiggle' it down into place. Dropping it in rather than pushing it in means you don't need to deal with other wolf trying to get out/move. The other way to help it is by having them both on follow so they don't try to 'wander' off.
Hey Kage As far as i can tell there is no better chance to get 2* boars during night. The higher stars during night is only for night spawns and as far as i know boars do not have night spawns. Those few 2* boars i found were during the day and stayed in those locations. Even the one i tamed respawned there again. So you will not have any luck looking in the same locations you only found zero or no stars. So you just have to get lucky and come across one. Also about fishing at the start you only caught mackerels that only give one fish. Those are easy to catch but there are plenty others in that spot so just keep on and you will get the others as well.

You can find 2 star boars during the day, or at least during the afternoon / late day. I found my two late the second of third day in my new world, they were right next to where I was starting to build my base and it was quite interesting to build fencing for them while they attacked since I did not even have leather armor yet, just the armor I started with.
Here is an early game tip. Always be gathering your berries, mushrooms, and meats. The more you have, the better you'll be come down the line. Trust me.
