He may not be the picture of health, but it’s good that someone so yoked and with thousands of children listening to him for advice is saying that cardio is key.
@@coffinfeeder7732 but the problem is sam and greg are in the tiny minority that puts cardio in front. Most are, like mike, so focused on hypertrophy and vanity. And in this video with mike, even discuss how cardio can be not that helpful, instead of talking about the benefits. They are super against cardio.
It’s cause they think fitness “kills gains.” Can’t tell you how many guys I heard that from. Like alright, never do cardio, and enjoy living on blood pressure meds for life.
The bodybuilding community isn't the fitness community by any stretch. Bodybuilding can be incredibly unhealthy if done incorrectly, as we can see from all of the early deaths of men in their 20's, 30's and 40's.
Even if it doesn’t help you get leaner (which it does) Cardio will still make you more jacked. The extra hemoglobin in your red blood cells that cardio generates will deliver more oxygen to your cells during anaerobic activity.
I love doing cardio just because it makes me feel good. Don't get me wrong I love lifting too, but cardio gives me a high I can't get from lifting alone. Plus the constant drive to do better than last time. Also seems to speed up my metabolism, and helps with the sore muscles from lifting.
Humans have done intense cardio farming and before that hunting/gathering for our entire existence and influencers still want to claim it's not good for losing weight 😂
Cardio is extremely important for many reasons. I initially didn't do cardio, as was worried about my gains and energy. But my energy has gone up. I'm still working out 5 days per week, but added in 3 cardio days per week and my energy has increased a LOT.
I dedicate three strength days and three cardio each week though I still get walking in on strength days and I'm slip in some arm / miscellaneous strength on cardio days.
That’s because your work capacity has increased which it does when you do cardio. A hard set of squats is way easier and easier to recover from when you have a good cardio. And that leads to even more gains since you can work harder. I really don’t understand why anyone would try to argue against cardio.
I am obsessed. For 12 years, I tried and failed many diet and many workout plan. I did them all: vegan, paleo, keto, carnivore, vegetarian, fasting. I looked back and thought about the times I almost got into good shape. When I was in high school on the boy swim team and when I was in college attending Army ROTC. What did both have in common? I was doing a crap load of activity. I was not so focused on dieting. So I tried increasing the calories to around 2000cal/day. Then I slowly added more zone 2 cardio into my routine. The weight started to slowly go down. I had less diet crashes.

Sure but when you'll stop being in a deficit it stands to reason that some sort of muscle memory will kick in and you'll gain back a lot of that lost muscle quickly. Also, as someone who's incorporated more cardio in the last three months and just started a cut, cardio has enhanced my ability to do hard sets without my heartbeat going over 200bpm, so I'd argue having a good cardio helps you really push in the gym too. So I've noticed I've gotten leaner while staying at the same weight (until the start of the cut, which has been a breeze for now) Better cardio = better recovery as well. Don't be afraid of a lil cardio. @@jeremyadorno9079
I can tell you from personal experience lifting with out cardio yielded less then desirable results. When I added cardio to weight training I lost significantly more weight and added definition. Everything in balance though.
@@paavola2 yes, for me once I added cardio with weight training I started loosing much more weight. When I was just weight training I would lose weight but it was slow and just felt like I was building muscles but it was still covered in fat if that makes sense. Once I added extra cardio to my weight training I started losing a considerable amount more. And became stronger and more defined looking actually fit and muscular versus just bulky strong if that makes sense, also adding the cardio allowed me to lift harder and for longer as time progressed. I started out by just walking after a training session, then walked further, then started doing sprints, then boxing etc. whatever cardio you choose I promise it will make a world of difference. But everything in balance because over training is just as bad. But when done in increments more and more over time it works. I did adjust my diet as well, nothing too crazy though, just avoid fast food, processed foods when can and things really high in sugar. But when your weight training and doing cardio you can have those cheat days with out it being so devastating to your weight loss so it makes eating healthy manageable. Hope that makes sense. The hardest part is being consistent, the beginning is a night mare but once you hit a certain point of consistency it becomes normal and you actually want to work out.
@@paavola2 yes, say your eating a certain amount of calories and weight training 2 hours a day, then you add 30 mins or whatever of cardio you will indeed burn more calories and lose more weight. A lot of people either focus on just cardio or just weight training which works but when you combine both the results are much better. Like I would say 70% weight training and 30% cardio is prime. Say your already lifting two hours a day, start off by walking or jogging depending on your fitness level after your lift, and increase the time and intensity over time and the results will shock you. I would say there is a cut off to cardio though. I wouldn’t do anything more then 45 mins - 1 hr cardio after lifting. Your body needs to recover and you don’t want to over train. Hope that makes sense.
Or you lift on certain days, and do intense cardio on days you don’t lift. If your lifting almost everyday add your cardio to the end of your weight lifting.
I’d argue (assuming you’re not overdoing it, to the point of losing weight too fast) that cardio helps with strength and hypertrophy. It’s a f*** ton easier to grind a heavy set of squats, when you’re in good shape. Mitchell Hooper is putting the proof of that out there, the way he’s dominating strongman lately.
I was trying to diet and lose body fat for 3 months, couldnt lose a pound. Stayed on the same diet but added 30-60min of cardio per day and have lost 10lbs in 6 weeks. It obviously works
I think both of you are in agreement here. You just got baited by the title. The point they're getting across is there's a line between productive cardio and unnecessary/junk volume. Someone that does 10k steps everyday will beat someone that does 100k steps once a month.
I replaced my video gaming chair with a treadmill, and now I walk while gaming. Sometimes 4-5 hours + daily. Shockingly, I lost a lot of fat with that change.
what he says is true tho. if uve ever done batshit crazy cardio for a week straight youll notice your normal walking strides naturally turns into slow motion for energy conservation. its super funny when u see yourself do it pretty much automatically
He seems to me quite upset about the fact that he just doesn't have the genetics to go pro in body building. Which is ok. 99.9% of people don't. It's not Greg's fault.
As you point out it is largely about how much cardio you do. If nothing else changes you should expect to lose weight, if you up the calories though then you will get fitter but not necessarily leaner.
Mike says he likes moments when professionals with practical experience figure out something that the scientists haven't. Ironically it seems that this is what's happening with him. The obsession with needing research papers that undeniably confirm something and only being able to look at something from a data focused perspective is causing him to drop bad takes. I reckon it's a similar thing with Jeff Nippard

People are designed to move and live an active life. Everything points to this direction. It improves your mood, VO2 max, metabolism, cardiovascular health, burns fat. Why wouldn't you do cardio
saying cardio doesn't burn fat is like saying lifting weights doesn't help you gain muscle... I guess the current fitness trend is to have an end goal of looking like a strongman competitor. (fyi, I'm not more hungry when I'm active. that arguement is BS)
I get noticably more hungry after my cardio sessions. BUT, if you pair it with a smart diet and dont just eat garbage, you dont feel the need to eat all those calories back. Its hard to eat 500 calories worth of Chicken and not be ready to stop eating 250 calories ago lol
Mike never said cardio doesn’t burn fat or that you shouldn't do it. What he’s really getting at is that going overboard with cardio like those crazy, extreme sessions think David Goggins type shit isn’t always worth the toll it takes on your body. Our bodies are designed to survive, and they don't like to burn fat easily because fat is stored energy. Your body doesn’t understand that we can just hit the grocery store for food; it’s still wired for survival mode. So, when you do excessive cardio, your body might react by trying to conserve energy afterward. That means you could end up feeling more tired, sitting around more, and just generally not moving as much in your day-to-day life. Essentially, your body tries to "save" energy, which could counteract the benefits of all that cardio. Cardio is great, but only up to a point. Like anything, if you overdo it, you hit a wall. It's like studying for 10 hours straight you get so mentally exhausted that you can’t even remember what you learned. Same with cardio: if you push yourself too hard, you can end up doing more harm than good.
Most Americans take 2,000-4,000 steps a day. Even those that walk or run for exercise usually don't hit 10,000. I average 14,500 this month and 19,500 this week with my highest today this month being just over 40,000.
Over the last 2 months I went from 210 to 188 by just adding 1 to 2hrs of cardio a day and eating what I want. My problem was not moving enough. Thanks Greg.
I literally did 15 hours of cardio every day for 3 months (thru hike) and while I did lose some weight, it wasn’t a ton of weight and a fair percentage of that was muscle mass. Two scientists talk about the science that explains the claim “you can’t outrun a bad diet” but since dr mike was one of those scientists coach Greg had to make a response video.
I actually got chubby while training for a 50k last year. You can’t out run a bad diet 🏃♀️ I’m back to strength training 2-3x’s a week. And running/mountain biking. Also back to portion control, loosing about 2lbs a week. I just wish more social media fitness influencers would educate the masses that cardio and strength training helps regular everyday people with their activities of daily living. Most people just want to be able to chase their grandchildren through Disney Land without getting completely whipped out 😴
It’s unbelievable that anyone on the planet anymore argues against cardio. The second I hear someone say it’s not necessary or not beneficial, I immediately tune them out. It’s also unbelievable to me how the western society has, over time, valued a schooling education over learn physical experience in terms of knowledge. Coach Greg has literally done everything Mike dreams of doing, hence he should have the knowledge to achieve it. But there are people in Mike’s comments and Greg’s saying that Mike has a high degree of learning over Greg so he must know more. Unreal.
In fairness, Dr. Israetel has coached some high level athletes over the years. He definitely has the knowledge. This beef between Greg and him is nonsense. They basically agree on 99% of everything, but like ex spouses, they argue over who’s right…..
Yes the overeducated morons showed their true hand the past few years. Now experts and Drs opinion means F all. They only say what they are paid to say. Remember.... Trust the science 🤣
I'm 1 min in to the video. "More cardio not making you more leaner" is a very nuanced argument. Yes, in the end it is all about calories in vs calories out, but doing cardio has also shown to increase appetite due to compensation, so people might end up eating more than what they burned. I still believe people should do cardio for cardiovascular benefits, but from my own struggles with weight less I think focus should be on the diet.
Greg after parroting the same talking points he’s listening to in the video for 5 minutes: “wow it’s almost as if I should have a phd and be sitting at that table”
As an average 44 year old, 3X gym/week, natural. Most of my life I have been cyclist, sport level in combination with hiking. I do notice in the summer time, when Inam cycling and hiking more, that my performance in the gym is better. Cardio gives you a good stamina/heart, better recovery etc.
I'd say it's 80% diet 20% cardio. I've tried to outrun a bad diet it doesn't work 😅 the cardio just helps. It gives it a nudge sometimes and you notice it on the scales. Also feel better and fitter etc.
I did an experiment, bulk for 6 months with no cardio. Definitely fluffier, stamina lacking, then I did a bulk with cardio, it’s night and day. I don’t need science. I experienced it for myself. I was visually leaner and my stamina was much better. Cardio, boys.

I have a tech school certificate And even I know cardio makes you leaner if you watch you diet and eat things in moderation. But its more about being leaner. What about heart health, better digestion, better sleep, better moods.
I work on my feet as a teacher and I'm now getting over 10k steps during the school day because of it (in addition to daily exercise that I do by skating, going gym, walking, cup stacking, chores and errands, etc. that brings that up to 15k total steps a day) 😊
Unless Mike Israetel changed his mind, he's consistently advocated for 10k steps a day. He also does BJJ regularly and and adjusts his cardio based on that. Just do the cardio that you can and are willing to do, and increase it over time
people just dont want to run for cardio. i dont blame them. its hard on your joints and you have to work hard for it. i suggest rollerblading, similar to running and easier on your joints!
Dude, I love this video. So tired of hearing "You cant out exercise a bad diet". YES YOU CAN. I lost 70 lbs in a year eating Mcdonalds, pizza and donuts. I paid NO attention to my diet till I was aroumd 15-16 percent body fat. And that was primarily tracking my protein intake- not calories. Now I track my calories a bit, because Ive put on substantial muscle, and I do MMA and BJJ, and dont want to push myself into super heavyweight. Thanks Greg, for pushing back on this, and saying what all of us coaches and trainers already know- cardio, especially high intensity, is probably the most important tool in fat loss.

ironic thing about mike saying if you go to super high you get more problems from it is that he always says people don't train hard enough, don't know where true failure is, so why would he assume people doing cardio would be any different?

I’m doing 6 to 7 days of cardio every week (zone 2-4 ) for 30 minutes each time. 100% this has helped me keep leaner. I have to keep up with my calories constantly due to all the cardio, lifting taking GO2 MAX and Turk builder. I’m having to remind myself to eat more these things help so much ! I’ve never been leaner in my life.
I suspect all this anti cardio programming primarily from the body building community is really about how they battle with maintaining energy levels especially being on PEDs. I see many of them struggling to breath in their workout videos.
Personal Experience : Doing a combination of calorie cutting and adding cardio together is what helped me get leaner. The Cardio part most certainly helped me maintain a calorie deficit because cutting calories FOR ME below 2500 calories starts just getting way too difficult to maintain over the course of the week. However, I have to say from my personal experience, I have always lost muscle in the process once my cardio starts getting high. Now, maybe thats just the process of being on a cut and getting to lower levels of body fat, around sub 10%. Ive done 2 cuts. Once during lockdown where i wasnt doing any gym work just cardio and dropping calories. That time i lost alot of fat but also alot of muscle The next time was last year. I did same, cut calories and increased cardio but this time maintained my weight programme and also tracked proteins to get at least 150grams per day. Even then, as soon as my cardio got high, around 14km+ per day, i found my muscle loss was significant. Again this could be comparable to just how everyone loses a bit of muscle on a cut. Or maybe i was doing something wrong. But it did have an affect on me those high levels of cardio
In the last 10 months ive reduced my bodyfat from 15% to around 7-8% whilst at least maintaining calories and often eating more than i used to with the only difference being the amount of cardio that i do.... (Now between 5 and 6 hours a week where as before it was 0). I watched the video where Mike said this and I'm a fan of his content but the proof is in the result and he is wrong on this one. Diminishing returns? Maybe, doesn't weight training incur the same diminishing returns?
I did price it out and GO2 Max is competitively priced for that supplement… and it IS a freaky effective product. It’s not like creatine where it takes a week to kick in. Literally take it for the first time and then go do cardio: you WILL notice a HUGE difference in your endurance!
I‘m 9 Months into my gym journey had 2 surgerys last month and exactly how coach greg said I did a lot of cardio after my workout and I have lost 45 pounds so 55 pounds a year is easy!
I love cardio (cycling, swimming, eliptical and sometimes rowing) and I think for most people cardio is very helpful to get lean. However when I want to lose weight, I for myself figured out that I get better results when I reduce the cardio and also weight lifting for a while. Otherwise I am always hungry and eat way too much food. When I am not so active it is way easier for me to be in a higher calorie deficit . But we all are different and need to find a way which works best for us.

There is such an anti cardio sentiment in the “fitness community”. It is ridiculous.
For what it’s worth, Sam Sulek, one of the biggest independent contemporary online figures in Fitness media, has spoken avidly on the benefit of daily cardio.

Cardio burns calories, burning more calories means a potential larger caloric deficit, which makes you leaner. Case closed.
kinda...
Not.
But too much of a calorie deficit can cause you to lose desired muscle mass, can’t it?
Sure but when you'll stop being in a deficit it stands to reason that some sort of muscle memory will kick in and you'll gain back a lot of that lost muscle quickly. Also, as someone who's incorporated more cardio in the last three months and just started a cut, cardio has enhanced my ability to do hard sets without my heartbeat going over 200bpm, so I'd argue having a good cardio helps you really push in the gym too. So I've noticed I've gotten leaner while staying at the same weight (until the start of the cut, which has been a breeze for now) Better cardio = better recovery as well. I can tell you from personal experience lifting with out cardio yielded less then desirable results. When I added cardio to weight training I lost significantly more weight and added definition. Everything in balance though.
So burning more calories (weights and cardio) while eating the same amount burned more fat and had better results than just weights?
All he was saying is that there is your body gets more and more efficient at using calories as you do more cardio.

I'm 1 min in to the video. "More cardio not making you more leaner" is a very nuanced argument. I still believe people should do cardio for cardiovascular benefits, but from my own struggles with weight less I think focus should be on the diet.

Adding More Edging Won't Make You Leaner
That time i lost alot of fat but also alot of muscle
The next time was last year.
The worst parts of this video where the cuts to Greg.
