It’s amazing how Adrianne’s voice sounds EXACTLY the same through just a standard mic with no proper setup etc when she’s singing Mythological Beauty, like it’s just such a pure sound, what a truly incredible artist ❤️
the thing that floors me about adrianne is that she isn't just a generational songwriting talent but an incredible guitar player on top of that. these imaginative tunings, the sophisticated and bittersweet harmonies, and her mesmerizing picking patterns really set her apart from her contemporaries. not to mention the solos she plays live... electrifying!
The coolest thing is that you're humble enough to give your greatest secrets away for free. If you never change the tunings on your guitar its like you're trapped inside of a box and can't help sounding like everyone else at some point.

hello ! I know this is probably lateee but id recommend either using a piano app for the notes or using an open tuner that will do any note ! I like soundcorset tuner@alya-kg6qd
I've been playing for 55 years and I discovered open tunings through Nick Drake and Joni Mitchell. Like u I love the drone and the ease of the one two and 3 finger chords. I can still play the other stuff in "normal tuning". I seem to be stuck in c sharp cos I like the timbre on my belly. U are first I have found who uses two strings the same next to each other. Sweet for the picking. I also moved to nylon strings. Great to hear u
I love how I was able to tell she was gonna play “not a lot just forever” when she played the open chord for the last tuning, she almost made the tuning her own in a way that’s only really possible with alternate tunings. It’s Like building a whole world off the foundation that’s the tuning and it’s so stunning and natural that it’s as if she discovered it rather than writing it

So I’ve always liked Big Thief, but over the past few months I guess I’ve connected with music in a different way and they’ve become one of my favorite bands right now. And the biggest reason, is Adrianne’s guitar playing. She is SO GOOD, this video is inspiring just getting this insight into how her musical brain works. At some point (if she isn’t already) she will reach that legendary status of guitar players. This video is amazing.
Been a music person all my life. Listening and playing. Creating. And I just got disgruntled and blank over the years. Lenker/Big Thief (as well as some deep soul searching) helped me reawaken that part of me.
This video not only offers up wonderful information on alternate tunings, it is as others have said, so soothing. Lenker's singing voice and speaking voice, and the way she plays are small, wonderful musical miracles.
This is excellent. She's an incredible talent. If you're listening to this and like it, you may really like Michael Hedges. He's the Grand Master of acoustic technique in modern folk. I'm sure Adrienne is a fan, and it's awesome to see where she is taking these ideas. Her records solo and with Big Theif are a newly discovered gem for me. Fresh and familiar, as all great art is.
oh yeah, way back in the olden days I started playing guitar tuned what I thought was the tuning because it sounded good, turned out it was open d, and I played like that for years before my younger brother started learning classical guitar and showed me "standard" tuning. I feel like I lost something when I standardized
Why I love TH-cam in a nutshell right here. Recommended video, never heard this beautiful lady before, educated and inspired in 9 minutes. Ive only changed tunings to play songs, not really tried anything for myself. I’ve got a spare guitar to go and experiment with. 👍😍
When I first started learning guitar my father tuned it to open D for exactly the reason you mentioned. It was a nice leap off point to get me hooked initially by the beautiful chords available to me with very little skill required except baring at different frets.
Being an unknown musician with hardly any audience, I don't have the budget for multiple guitars for live work and don't want to change tunings between every piece (or funds for lots of new string sets as this sort of tuning kills strings quickly) - so rather than lots of alt tunings I use a partial capo a lot. In a similar fashion, it's helped me write over 60 or so pieces of music I probably wouldn't have without it. At least 50% of my repertoire uses it.
@@ChopAndBrew I use a G7th Newport 3-string partial capo. There are many places you could place it on the neck but what works for me mostly is holding an Esus4 chord down i.e. 0-2-2-2-0-0 low to high. It effectively gives you a sort of whole tone lifted DADGAD base - a simple example of which would be one of my you tube videos (th-cam.com/video/8m3AFTTHxMA/w-d-xo.html) - although a better quality audio would be on my bandcamp/spotify etc
The guitar part for every single song I've ever written is just having the guitar in an open tuning and sliding two fingers around the top two strings. I love the droning effect it has, especially if it's slightly out of tune.
The funny thing about the one at @2:23 is it's actually an "Open E shape" ( 1 5 1 3 5 1 ) just detuned a whole step. A True Open D shape tuning would be 1 5 1 5 1 3.
thank you for this video. This was just what i needed to change my sound on the guitar and grow my confidence as a singer. I only tried the first simple E down to a D, but it was all i needed to illicit a feeling i haven't had with my guitar for a while. Thank you
Adrianne Lenker has so much great material I love it. Learnt a lot of her songs already, the clip of playing myth beauty and the tuning and capo position is sooooo helpful. Can't wait to play along. Sometimes just knowing the tuning is all you need to learn a song. Not a lot just forever another great one, and my angel is a great closer to the songs and instrumentals album. That song I believe is open D but don't tune down the B string, and capo on the 2nd fret.
I've learnt about alternate tuning a decade ago (Andy McKee/Don Ross/Jon Gomm-era) and really haven't turned back. I think one aspect that makes it "pretty" she mentions is how the scales are more aligned with how we percieve music. When you listen to a song you hear the I and then maybe IV V I VI II and you're centered in that specific scale. A traditional tuning is GREAT for transposing that into different keys (bar chords, tranpositions or octaves, think Spain by Korea) but making music is a different thing altogether. An alternate tuning helps the composer go between I IV V I VI II and without worrying about traditional problems like key changes with open strings because you're already in the "right" key. The drawback however is that modulation has to change the technique you use (bc the open strings only fit in the original key).
