I have a great story on this.
I was going to a famous underground music club in london (fabric), they don’t allow collard shirts in the club, generally anything smart you won’t get in.
I was in a suit after work, and decided to try and go. I knew the head doorman, but i knew all the door staff would immediately say no.
Anyway, I said please can you let me talk to the head guy, he told me politely that i couldn’t come inside with a shirt and a suit. He did however say, that if i had a t shirt on then he’d let me in (as a bit of a joke).
Anyway a girl was joining me at the club, and I quickly text her asking if she could bring a t shirt, she only had women’s crop tops etc.
Anyway she brought the crop top, and i stuff my dress shirt in my briefcase and walked up to the door after changing.
The guy let me in, wearing a full suit and a women’s white crop top with a briefcase.
If you are reasonable and eloquent to door staff, and you explain yourself, you’ll probably get in.

Can't say I've ever worked on the doors, but I grew up on a scheme in Scotland where random violence was very much the norm. I had very similar experiences: You can usually de-escalate things if someone has a perceived slight, but if they're just out for trouble, they will generally fuck off when they realise you're not phased by the prospect of being battered and will stand your ground anyway. Worst comes to worst, one of them gets a sore face before you do!

As I listen I see how this all can apply not just to security, but living well as a whole. Being able to watch people and intervene before things get rough at the club is similar to how it's good to act with personal relationships, or with our relationship to ourselves as well. Often a watchful mind, listening to our gut feelings, and a careful response as soon as thing start to seem a bit dicey is better than letting them escalate and explode later. At that point it's harder to make space to respond, rather than just react.
Also the value of honesty, and of just gauging up front if a person or situation is a good fit for you, and respectfully but firmly doing what works for you. It's like each of our lives is a sort of venue in a sense, one that goes most smoothly if we remain mindful of the situation and are in tune, rather than being distracted or avoiding facing problems skillfully. We have to decide what gets to come in, and make sure to be watchful of what's going on inside.

I went to a club twice, different clubs. The first time, I mostly talked with a female bartender and a male bouncer. I don't really like the energy in those places.
At the biker bar where I performed as a musician, they had a huge biker guy at the door. I never saw any fights or anything, and the energy was much better than it was in the clubs.
When I was in high school, word spreads quickly, and I had a reputation that I wasn't to be messed with. It's different in the real world where nobody knows who you are.

I remember there was this gay club in my old town that used to serve cheap beer. We were stopped by the security, me and my mates could get in but they would not let our girlfriends in, but 5 minutes later when lesbian couple couple got in, we had to change our plans. Next week our girlfriends went in first then we went in after, and all had a good time and this happened week after week.

I remember getting turned away by a doorman when on a night out with my two mates.
A group of 5 lads walked in with no issues before us then we were asked two questions (which we answered):
    Do you have ID? (Yes)
    Where are you from? (Birmingham)
His response was “Not tonight lads, you’ve come with the wrong attitude”.
We wore shoes and shirts with a collar as not having these on previous occasions was the reason we denied entry (or so we were told).
The only visible difference between the group of 5 lads that were allowed in and me and my 2 mates was our ethnicity.
Great video as always. Keep them coming 👍🏾

Great video. I don't even work in security but a lot of your advice can be applied to every day situations. You may have done a video on this already, but would you consider discussing the attendance at clubs when you worked security verses the current attendance in clubs today (the difference between the two) and how it affects security? I know you've touched on how security has changed (it's generally weaker present day) but I also believe club attendance has changed as well. I know in the U.S., a lot of clubs have shut down due to a lack of attendance because so much has shifted to online. I'm not sure if that's the case in the U.K as well. Thanks again for the time you put in to making this video.

When he started talking about the ‘script’ thing that was amazing to see that concept analyzed so well. I’d noticed that same thing about myself and others and most people don’t talk about it cuz they don’t wanna seem crazy or neurotic but, I also believe it’s a very common thing. And, can often be negative.

Today - social media engineering / bad actors who do reconnaissance within the club already communicate with those who do the dirty work).

@@thatgearguy I appreciate the reply. Both situations are possible. If an actual employee/contractor is involved, they are essentially no different from an patron/outsider. My perspective, respectfully, comes from basic-level training under someone who was quite intense-a professional trainer and bodyguard who seemed adept at playing both sides.
