    Tie the hind legs of the nurse cow (loosely) while the calf is suckling.
    This is how they do it in India. I saw them on TH-cam.
    Give the nurse cow grain (with additional molasses) to sweeten her suckling experience when she accepts the calf. This will encourage and train her to be a good nurse cow.

    heres a suggestion.....have a draw for a subscriber to be chosen for a full day tour of your farm plus the chance to meet the calves, maybe play with them. If its not expensive, put them up at the local holiday inn for a couple nights. With the # of commercials on your videos, the sponsors could pay for the airplane trip and hotel in exchange for use of their ads,

    Life on the farm is a daily reality check.
    It's a shame that over the years fewer and fewer people have within themselves what it takes to tackle the responsibilities and long hours..
    Without Farmers we would ALL be Starving, Naked and Afraid.
    Thank You.

    That was really good that your cow took those two calves that quick. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. But I’ve never seen it happen that fast.

    Don't give them a full bucket of milk to start with give them half and work your way up to a full one to. Doing it will help them not get scours and give them plenty of hay. Not trying to tell you what to do but giving tips to help. I learn that info from my grandad along time ago

Seems to me valves can get a really rough ride in regards to abuse sadly, your animals will NEVER truly know just how blessed they are to be with you there hey! Anyway, wish you the very best with your endeavours there

    I know this will sound gross, but if you could wipe/scent the dead carcuss of the momma cows calf onto the orphans, would that trick her into thinking they would be her calves? thus easier to give milk to them?

      Like I said in the video, it normally doesn't happen that easy but about half of the ones we try end up working out. Occasionally we have to keep them together for 5-6 days before they actually except them. Hopefully it works out for you!

    Any ideas about why the birth defects so close together? Heifers possibly graze teratogenic plants or exposed to modified live BVD vaccines?

    • @FarmandHammer
      @FarmandHammer  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cici Bradley We aren’t sure. We know it is most likely not plants because we have had 20 others calve without problems and these two groups have been together for 3 months. We contacted the head of the sale we purchased them from and described the defects to him. He responded with “yes that’s an issue we occasionally come across when crossing certain angus lines.” But that’s all he would say.

    did you spray them with calf claim or anything perfume? so that she would take them like she did

    • @FarmandHammer
      @FarmandHammer  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I didn't do anything special. I just put her in the chute and brought the calves over. It is rare that a heifer would accept a calf thats not hers (even more rare for two). If the cow is not accepting them, we occasional take the skin off of the her dead calf and tie it over the back of the calf we are trying to graft onto her. We have mixed results but occasionally that works for us. I personally dont want to spend money on special stuff because I personally dont think they would help that much, but I could be totally wrong.
      Thanks for watching!

      KevinG We actually do have a Holstein cow that we use as a nurse cow, but she produces in the fall. You can make a lot more money running nurse cows, but I personally don’t have the money to purchase full grown cows right now. That is something I am working towards because you can raise 3-4 calves per cow.

    • @FarmandHammer
      @FarmandHammer  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It has been a good year for the 15 heifers we kept back, they all calved fine and the calves are doing great. But the 10 heifers we bought from a quality sale have been having problems. I don't know why but they just arent producing like they should for what we paid for them. Kind of a bummer but there is not much we can do. But we still have about 60 calves that should be dropping calves very soon! Thanks!
