The Crown season 4 was of complete beauty and I was mesmerized by Emma Corrin's Princess Diana.
I wanted to explore Prince Charles character first and foremost because Josh O'Connor's performance is one of my absolute favorite from the show.
It is important to state that I made this video in the hopes to show how Charles grew from being a quiet, sympathetic young royal into a self-centered, insecure nightmare of a person. I especially wanted to show why (him being unheard most of his life) it all lead to him directing fury at his wife, Diana who became one of the most famous person in the world and deserved nothing but love from her family in law.

I think the Crown did him justice. The great thing about this series is that the show creator had laid the groundwork of building up this character in seasons 2 and 3. A timid and ignored child who grew older to become just as timid and ignored, but also in other ways, as well. To seek comfort and strength, he’d found love with Camilla, but this source of joy was stripped from him, too.
In Season 4, he truly becomes monstrous and emotionally abusive. But with the background of the foundational layers set in Season 3, he is, overall, a deeply complex and flawed character. A bit pathetic. But also to be deeply sympathized with.
Finally someone who’s absolutely spot on! I’ve read loads and loads of comments recently of people who have just seen season 4 fiercely demonising Prince Charles in a rather manichean (if not childish) way, completely obviating all that complexity that a character involves.

But I also like analyzing shows and films, in general~. Hehe.
His actions shouldn't be excused.
But it's true, he is a victim of his situation.
He was raised to be a man in constant desperate need of comfort and affirmation. It's the nature of the monarchy structure, and the nature of being raised to be a figurehead, a living statue. Diana fought that ill fate to the bitter end. And when it made her outshine Charles, all sacrifice and suffering he had endured until then was for nothing, because he then had nothing, not even the admiration of his people, and thus has been denied any form of acceptance or purpose. And poor Diana was sucked into it. It's no wonder that Megan didn't want to stick around. They're just shells of people.

Like in real life. No one inflicts harm deliberately(unless you're a psychopath or something). No one is a villain in their own story. But the biggest villain of all is the royal family. Diana was the biggest victim of all because she was caught in the middle of all that. Had the royal family accepted Camilla, Diana would still be alive today perhaps living a happy life. Most of us wouldn't knoe her probably, but surely she would have been much happier(i hope).

@@lyndacollier4242 at its core, it’s surprisingly accurate. It’s clear they did research at least. They would take real things said and real events then make educated guesses on what went on in between. For a drama series and not a documentary, it’s great.

But the royal families of europe were all related to each other. King George and Queen Mary changed the rules and allowed their children to marry people who were not royal. Queen Elizabeth's mother wasnt a royal. She was a lady of a minor family in scotland. it is natural for things to change. The monarchy must adapt to its time if it wants to survive. They are no better than anyone. Their position is held by a thread and their legitimacy to hold such powers is honestly not the strongest. So if they appear to see themselves as better than anyone else, the monarchy wont survive much longer. About harry. harry has no prospects of becoming king. For him to continue being a senior member of the royal family is a bit stupid. Plus in 17 years or so when all of william's children come of age, they will be higher ranked than Harry and he will no longer be a senior member. The royal duties will pass to the new generation. He wants to live a life with his wife without being a subject of hateful tabloids who can't give meghan a break.
Charles will be defender of the faith for the church v England he had a duty to Cleave to his wife all the things in the Bible even though he loved Camilla and all the rest of it but she Camilla was social engineering and nurturing Charles in his marriage because he didn't have his own mind because he wasn't allowed to he was good at being a greeny and all these other things but as far as women concerned he gave all h i s power to Camilla

he’s my favorite character because I think his storyline is so interesting. Even though I hate him for what he did to Diana, I just think Josh O’Connor played Prince Charles amazingly.

I don’t hate him for what he did to Diana because there’s enough blame to go around. But the fact is that he loved Camilla for 50 years now. You can see today how stupid they are and how much they enjoy each other and love each other. The tragedy is that an archaic system manipulated real people.

Prince Charles seems to make a habit of it. It’s always other people who are to blame - his family, Diana, the staff, the media. When he gets to the throne & things go wrong, perhaps he’ll blame Camilla.
@@dcoughla681 when he gets to the throne the monarchy and the commonwealth are over. Lots of people have a sentimental attachment to the Queen, but very few people have any kind of emotional attachment to Charles. Lots of strings will be cut when the Queen dies.

They were all fantastic but Josh O’Connor has been the biggest revelation of the past two seasons for me personally. His acting is superb and I can’t wait to see what else he does.

4:17 I loved her delivery of “Not the woman you married!” It’s so raw and I think it shows how Diana is grasping at straws hoping that they can make the marriage work
I do think Prince Charles felt as an outcast in the royal family like Diana, he wasn’t taken seriously and listened to due to his particular personality and sensibility.
His father arranged him with a 19 years old girl even if he wasn’t sure she was the right choice and was deeply in love with someone else that his parents didn’t like.
But then when finally he married and gained some attention as the future King, everyone was interested about Diana, an icon, and not him.
I’m not justifying his behavior but I do think he struggled too and this was one of the few things he had in common with Diana.

@@ayeshak6822 You seem to completely ignore any nuance. Life isn’t just black or white, one thing or another, there are nuances and complexities. He was someone who was raised from childhood to never even consider the possibility that abdication was possible, and his abdication would have never been allowed or accepted especially after what happened with the last abdication and how it was blamed for killing his grandfather. People like you keep saying “oh he could have just given up the crown to be with Camilla” except you fail to recognize that he couldn’t just give up the crown because he would have never been allowed to. And Camilla would have also never allowed Charles to do so because it would have made her a target for everyone to blame for ruining the monarchy. Given how the press and media attention even killed Diana, is it any wonder Camilla wasn’t looking to be some popular target.
As is often is in real life, there are many complexities and many things that effect how someone makes decisions. It’s never as clear cut and simple as you made it out to be.

I am OBSESSED with Josh's performance as Prince Charles. He just commits to the character and there's not an ounce of vanity, self-consciousness or hesitation in his performance, even when Charles is at his foulest and whiniest. @@ayeshak6822 I disagree. Personally I believe while yes he shouldn’t have treated Diana like that, he was being an arrogant asshole. I blame more the constitution. The only reason why he wasn’t allowed to marry Camilia was because she was already married and the crown won’t allow a royal member of the family (nonetheless the future king) to marry a divorcée. If only he was allowed to marry camilia, none of this would’ve happened. Diana would probably still be alive with a husband that actually loves her and a more healthy mental state.

Beautiful video!!! Josh O'Connor did an incredible acting job over 2 season, we couldn't help but feel sympathy for his tragedy at first and then he truly transformed into pure evil and Josh really sold that anger and disgust.

The whole situation of Charles/Camilla/Diana is just desperately sad all round. At least Charles is now with the love of his life, and will have her by his side to support him when he becomes King. Diana was happier and finding her place in the world in her final years. Times have now changed and William and Harry have been able to marry their choice, not who’s “suitable”, and they both seem happy and settled with their wives and children. Our next two monarchs will have consorts who will lovingly support them, and keep the crown steady, which would not have been the case if Charles and Diana had remained married.

Yes, I do and it stayed with me because it was such a revelation that Charles was so sexually needy for his mistress. Josh did an amazing job portraying how complex Charles is.. brilliant actor.
Yet no sympathy for the real Charles, what he did to Diana was unforgivable ... we lost such a gem just because his goal in life is to be Camilla's tampon.
I think what he did to Diana was disgraceful and horrendous and vile but he wanted to marry Camilla long before Dianna. I believe that if he wasnt heir/ prince and was just other rich family he would've married Camilla and moved on. It's not entirely his fault but did have a part to play

Idk why everyone hates Charles and Camilla? I mean, Charles wanted to marry camilla, not Diana. As much as we try and hate Charles, we can't stop longing for him and this story to end out differently, maybe in an alternate universe. Maybe he (his character arc) represents the brokenness in all of us. The fabric of a weaker soul.

It's hard to soak in but it sadly wasn't Charles but the Royal Family that is responsible for this misery. Season 3 Charles had me feel for him. it's hard to be separated from the person you love, to be looked down upon because you chose your own life partner. If this wouldn't have been the situation, Charles, Diana, and Camilla would've been living happily away from all these controversies.

First of all, let's not forget that both Charles and Diana came from emotianally unstable backgrounds. They were "needy" individuals, because they wanted from the other person to be emotianal, very much independent, which neither of them was. Both were vulnerable narcissistic individuals in their own way, because Charles wanted the love of Camilla, and he knew he had it, and public's love, which he never had and Diana wanted to outshine to the public, because she didn't find fhe love and comfort she wanted from her husband. I'm sick and tired of people who only blame Charles for the failure of this marriage, If you look at this marriage closely people like them were mismatched and it was a failure from the beginning. To blame to emotianally problematic people is not the best solution. I prefer to blame the establishment (both of their parents, grandparents, sisters, brothers etc.) who didn't do anything to prevent this disaster!

Diana had a lot confession even when she still alive. She tell her personal problems to public via interview & tapes. Charles never show his personal emotion to public, I think it's a plus point from him.

This was absolutely well done! Exceptional even. I forgot how much of a character he was in the beginning. Just a broken little boy who wanted to feel loved.

True. He wanted the best of both worlds. People who are sympathetic to him say it wasn't his fault because he had to marry diana or else give up the crown. Well, why didn't he just give up the crown then and go with camilla? The truth is he wanted to get his cake and eat it, too. He wanted both the crown while still being with camilla. And to do that, he sacrificed diana.

The Crown is so good at humanizing the BRF.
Diana's shoulders were always hunched perhaps due to her height and build but I think Indicative of her lack of confidence. She was always shy and soft spoken. This actress played her extroverted. Diana described how confronted Camilla about the affair and it was wasn't this explosive scene but rather she admitted how nervous she was prior to confronting her.
She wasn't so shy and softly spoken behind closed doors.
She was extemely volatile and the staff had to tip toe around her feelings all the time.

I know Diana because of my mother. We have been watching The Crown together. I'm 32 and a semiologist and as a literature grad student, I have to say that according to The Crown: Diana and Charles weren't compatible at all (I mean the characters). They both were delusional. In addition, Diana was living in a fantasy, she got married believing in fairy tales and pushed Charles away due to her neediness and lack of intellectual maturity. On the one hand, Charles was a deep and obscure soul committed with the understanding of his own nture. On the other hand, Diana was an illiterate aristocratic brain with no factual aims, she was just a beautiful tall blonde. I'm pretty sure she would have become crazy or highly promiscuous due to that sense of fragility that any man would take advantage of. The real character with a modern and brave soul was Camila. She married who she wanted, maybe for the wrong reasons. But in the end make her way to be respected for being a human who played her cards properly.

I've always felt sorry for prince charles! The fact that he was forced to not be with his true love & everyone in his family presuaced him! He just could not love Diana! Why many people did not understand that!

I think Charles didn't fit in his family, he is so much emotional than them and he only wants to be loved and live a good life. And respect Diana I don't think Charles can show love or affection to someone else if he has never experimented love for himself, so I don't see him as the villain, I think they're both the victims.
I agree with you. It is unfortunate that more people are not able to see and feel his pain too. He was the victim also.

Disagree, I never saw him as a villain, always as a tragic character. I always feel sad for him. A lot of other people feel the same.
I fell in love with him in season 3 episode 6 where he goes to Wales so it really destroyed me seeing what he became
If Charles got guts he could have abdicated his rights and married Camila in the first place, Edward would have been more than happy to replace him, but no. He wanted the throne and was willing to use Diana as his stepping stone. However the supposed-to-be stepping stone became an explosion right on his face.
If you had 2 brain cells to rub together you'd know that Edward did want the crown back eventually and was willing to work with the Nazis to get it. Seriously, this is who you'd prefer? You are forgetting you are watching fiction. Do not mistake it for a full accurate account of what happened in reality.
Edward would not have replaced Charles, even if such a wild scenario as abdication came up. Whhich was in fact unthinkable. If Charles had no children, the next in line is Prince Andrew. Think about that for a moment.
