    I'll not argue the technical points made. However, there is an important practical aspect that I this was missed in this review. I bought this camera for two reasons. First is that I wanted a light, portable, easy to pack around all day camera. The camera body, 18-55mm, 55-200mm, 22mm, EVF, 90EX Speedlite, charger, and batteries weighs in at tab over three pounds and slips inside of a general purpose backpack. The other reason, an this is what's missed in the review, is that I needed ab backup camera for my full frame Canon DSLR. One brief mention is made of the adapter for EF and EF-S lenses, but that is a very important aspect of this system for Canon owners. The fact that I can use my L series glass with the M3 makes the choice simple.

      Sir I couldnt agree more my EF 50mm f/1.8 STM and my EF 40mm f/2.8 STM and lets not forget the EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM. This and the Adaptor are a match made in Heaven for me as a vlogger and youtuber

    With a built in EVF, new DIGIC 7 processor, 3-4 more lenses, and 4K video this camera would be rocking. Come on Canon and the EOS M4, we will be cheering for you.

    One thing I really enjoyed watching in your review was the video part where you had the camera trying to stay focused on the reviewer as he moved around. I'd love to see you doing that particular test on all cameras. To be fair you'd have to shoot them all indoors in similar lighting. I thought the EOS M3 did a good job.

    Thanks for the review.
    I have used this camera since it came out in japan. They offered a deal where they practically gave you the evf.
    While i agree on his disappointments, it won't stop a good photographer from taking great photos.
    One solution to the lack of lenses is to get a eos-m to leica lens mount and use rangefinder lenses. They are small, very high quality, and since they are manual, the focus speed of the eos-m is irrelevant.
    Either way, i can't argue with the fact that there are better camera systems out there in the market.

    I had the first EOS M and nothing compared to it when they dropped its price to $250. Great build quality, very useful touch screen, good image quality and after the firmware upgrade decent AF speed. It was one of the most underrated mirrorless cameras and the M3 follows it. When Canon will drop the price like they did with the M it will be the best buy! :)
    What I noticed with the flip screen cameras I tend to use the EVF much less but sure an internal EVF would have been much better just like the flash.

      +Tamas Varga Talk about lens selection...

    • @Lofote
      @Lofote 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      what? a first gen nex-3 (that was 2 years older) beat it and back then it already was cheaper than 250.

    • @tamasvarga67
      @tamasvarga67 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pop.Up
      When I had it as a walk around camera the 22 f2 and the 18-55 kit lens was enough and I had the Canoon lens adapter which I barely used. Now a decent UWA and a 55-250 is available and the 15-45 is coming. I am not saying there couldn't be more but I think the intended market has an OK selection.

    • @tamasvarga67
      @tamasvarga67 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lofote
      What does it mean "beat it"? I had a nex-5n which I couldn't get along with. Terrible menu system and useless touch screen which was better turned off. For me there is more to the camera than list of features, dxo mark scores etc. My opinion is no way an absolute statement neither yours. We all have preferences and from the selection of cameras available on the market today everybody can find something that suits his/her needs.
      I agree with Chris, walk into a store and try it you might like it (or not). I know this from my experience as I never considered buying the first EOS M but it was a really nice camera to use and it had good image quality.

      I would go with the newer M3.

    • @cooloox
      @cooloox 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +Tianna Brown The EOS M3 by a mile!!!! I cannot stress this enough. I love both cameras and often shoot with both around my neck, one with an 11-22mm wide angle and one with the 18-135mm lens for general street photography. I took 1600+ shots on the M3 and about 200+ on the M at a festival on Saturday. Jumping from one to the other always makes me realise there is a massive difference between the cameras. The M3 is WAYYYYY faster in every possible way. FAR faster focusing, faster between shots, faster at flicking through shots on the screen or zooming in and out when reviewing shots. Faster generally navigating between menus, faster at starting up. There is a world of difference between the cameras. With the focusing, not only is the M3 many times faster, but it often focuses on things straight away which the M might struggle to even focus on at all. I noticed this the first day I bought the M3. The screen is better on the M3, it is sharper and more legible in bright sunlight. Because you can tilt the screen too, it extends the advantage further. Battery life is very good on the M3 and pretty lousy on the M. Ignore Canon's claims. I get about 300-350 shots on a charge with the M and well over 1000 on the M3. I am a fast shooter though and get on with taking shots when the camera is turned on; I don't walk around wondering what to shoot while the camera is turned on.
      In terms of image quality there is not a huge difference, but the M3 images are slightly cleaner at higher ISOs which is a great job by Canon considering there are 6 extra megapixels. There is more detail too due to the extra MP.
      I have posted some images from both cameras on a website, but I have been too busy to update the images and separate them so you know which camera took which images. At screen size you would never notice a difference anyway. As soon as I get a chance I will add a ton of images and have each camera shown separately.

    I am baffled as to why reviewers complain about the lack of an external viewfinder on a mirrorless camera. The whole point of having a mirror is to have a viewfinder, and now that the image is displayed digitally, the mirror is no longer necessary. Adding an external viewfinder to a mirrorless camera seems illogical and backward.

    • @TheCameraStoreTV
      @TheCameraStoreTV  8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      +Norbert S A viewfinder is still incredibly useful for using in bright light, stability, and better gauging exposure. Also, all of the M3's major competitors have one.
      Jordan @ TCSTV

    • @ronnbot
      @ronnbot 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Norbert S Well, this particular camera should have an EVF for its price, and preferably a built-in one or at least it should come with the detachable one but that one is bulky.
      I have a GX7 and love it's EVF; use it half the time. Before that, I was using an E-PL2 and after some time got a detachable EVF (the VF-2) because I needed it for the reasons Jordan mentioned above. However, it's cumbersome to use and popped off numerous times (luckily didn't loose it). I wouldn't get a mirrorless without a built-in EVF anymore.

    • @mjardeen
      @mjardeen 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Norbert S To understand that, you have to consider that most of this cameras direct competitors have a viewfinder.

    • @norberts537
      @norberts537 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That would make it bulkier and heavier though.
      IMHO, a mirrorless camera with viewfinder is like a wireless mouse with cord.

    • @mjardeen
      @mjardeen 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very silly, and the reason Canon has failed so far. People want viewfinders. and avery company making mirrorless makes cameras with viewfinders that add no real bulk. You might want to sit down and study the A6000 or a6300 from Sony to see how it is done. Then there are all the Fuji, Olympus and Panasonic cameras. Not to leave out the A7 series that has been ricking -- I guess if Canon wants to make toy cameras that is their decision. There's a reason the M series has been a dismal failure so far.

  • @VaFreeways
    @VaFreeways 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I thought this was a tough but fair review of this camera. The sub-$1000 mirrorless segment is really in a weird space right now. Sony's A6000 is still a great choice but with their announcement back in August that they were going to focus on their full frame offerings, it makes me wonder if they are just going to abandon the entry-level mirrorless segment and just have the RX100 IV and RX10 II carry the water on the low end. Then you have Nikon with their J series which never really took off. Canon has this and the new M10 which looks solid but unexceptional. Honestly, taking everything into account, I think the Olympus OMD-EM10 II is the strongest offering in this segment right now. Even though it has a slightly smaller sensor, the overall functionality of the camera and the lens selection make it the most compelling option in the sub-$1000 space for mirrorless right now.

  • @mudgie069
    @mudgie069 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Hard to understand why Canon is struggling with this camera when all their Dslr's have generally excellent focusing speed. No EVF, shockingly bad buffer when shooting raw, sever lack of M mount lenses doesn't really do it for me. For $1000 there are just much better options in the market. Great review as always.

    • @ObelixCMM
      @ObelixCMM 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Howie Mudge Yes AF is good on DSLR, but that is phase detection AF, not contrast AF like on this camera. If they used sensor from 7DmkII it would be much better

    • @zvxcvxcz
      @zvxcvxcz 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ObelixCMM Even that is behind Sony though, and Sony is behind Samsung.

    • @mudgie069
      @mudgie069 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ObelixCMM I think the problem for Canon in mirror-less is every one else contrast AF is far superior (even Fuji) and the likes of Sony, Fuji and even the Olympus E-M1 have hybrid af systems which are just far superior.

    • @zvxcvxcz
      @zvxcvxcz 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Howie Mudge I agree completely. Dual pixel isn't awful though, but it's far from the front of the pack in mirrorless AF.

    • @cooloox
      @cooloox 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's actually MUCH faster at focusing than it appeared in the video. Keep in mind you're using a dedicated phase detection sensor on your DSLR. How many DSLRs can get even close to this camera at focusing when they're in live view? This camera is permanently in live view. At all times what you see is what you truly get! You're seeing a simulation of the image, with whatever WB, exposure compensation etc. and with a nice histogram and digital 2-axis level. Touch a face and not only is it tracked, but the camera meters off that square, so spotlit, backlit, whatever - you get correct exposure without manual intervention.

      I agree, and in japan they sell the kit that way. You can still find that kit on ebay

    • @asadb1990
      @asadb1990 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheVFXbyArt Its a money making tactic for sure, but it should be packaged it. And in some ways, a clip on viewfinder can be more convenient as a way to slim down the camera when not in use.
      I will wait for a future model of the EOS Mirrorless line where they make something like the panasonic gx series or sony alpha/nex style body where the viewfinder is off to the side. In my test of the sony nex 7, I find that an offset viewfinder is so much more comfortable to use as my nose doesn't have to press on the screen..

    I almost want to buy this as a secondary camera. I agree with Chris. Love the way it feels. The menus are great, size is great, and the touch screen is great. But the video side is horribly lacking. I personally don't mind that it's a 1080 camera, but can we really not get 1080 at 60 fps? A built in view finder would be preferable. The view finder on the a6000 is not so great, but it's better than nothing. That pancake lens is cool. There's a lot of potential in this system, but it just falls short for me.

    • @cooloox
      @cooloox 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Brian Wiemer Photography I have one as a secondary camera and I am very happy with it. I am not into video though, so that makes a difference. Video quality is not bad with a decent lens and you get full manual control over video while shooting. The external EVF is good, especially if you get it for free as we did over here in Australia.
      What type of video work do you do?

    • @TheSlageSaga
      @TheSlageSaga 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not much at the moment unfortunately. Really it'd just be nice to get some decent looking slow motion at 1080, but then I'd have to upgrade to a 7D Mark II. Mostly doing stills now though. I'm thinking about just putting my money into some more lenses. My friend has an A7r II, and I like it a lot too, but I'm not totally convinced that now is the time to jump ship (or if I even should). Decisions. I'm not sure what the deal is with the EVF here in Taiwan. I'll have to take a look.

    • @cooloox
      @cooloox 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Brian Wiemer Photography I only have 2 issues with Sony mirrorless, or mirrorless generally: they're so fiddly if you have large hands and don't compare with a DSLR for handling. I have never seen a reviewer disagree with this. Secondly, Sony menus are a disaster.
      I don't shoot video, but that is going to change at a hobby-level, but I think the way those cameras overheat while shooting video is unacceptable. If I was seriously into video then buying a camera which overheated and stopped within 15-20mins would not be a feasible option.

    • @TheSlageSaga
      @TheSlageSaga 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      cooloox I completely agree with you. I love the way my 6D feels. I don't have any problems with weight or handling at all. I've also never had it do anything weird or stop working. It's an extremely stable system. I've gone back and forth thinking about it recently, I've decided to just wait it out with Canon and see what they do with their next line of full-frame cameras. I think they have a lot of challenges and expectations to meet, and I'm really hoping they bring something new and compelling to the table. In celebration of this decision, I've gone out to purchase the 100mm L Macro.
      In regard to the Sony A7r II, I still think it's a compelling camera. The only issue I had with the handling was that my pinky had nowhere to go. The menus are tricky though. I'm sure you learn how to work around them. Overheating is unfortunate; however, there are a lot of features I enjoyed while using it. I really liked the viewfinder, and IBIS is a huge win. I was also shocked by the accuracy of the eye detect focus.

    • @cooloox
      @cooloox 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Brian Wiemer Photography Congratulations on your new macro lens! Thank you for your thoughts on the A7r ii. Sony are definitely making big efforts towards creating the perfect camera. Come on Canon, wake up and respond!

    I bought a M3 two years ago for around $275 and love it. The AF object tracking is not bad for what its worth, and AF is a bit slow. Than again, I am mainly shooting stills. However, I still would like a EVF, IBIS, faster AF, better face/eye tracking, and a higher number in drive mode. So I am looking for a new camera while still enjoying the M3.

    I'm an M3 owner. Honestly I don't want or need the EVF. This camera class is for casual/fun use and I don't think an EVF is necessary. Just extra cost and complexity. Besides if I'm street shooting, the last thing I want to do is raise the camera to eye level letting my subject know I'm photographing them. For candids, composing using the screen is way more fun. Especially at hip level. I have my Canon 6D for when I need a viewfinder.

    I hate the canon eos m's focus speed and servo focus. BUT.... I have the EOS M(for 2 years now) that i bought for like 350$ with the 18-55 and a flash. The camera produces amazing pictures(if you know what you are doing), some pictures have gotten me praise from pro photographers. It is amazing for portraits and landscape, not so much for sports. With good light it pretty much has the speed of a entry level DSLR. I use magic lantern to allow me to focus peak. The real problem are the lenses not the body, so if u wanna buy an adapter, then this camera is good. But it cost like 50-80$ depending on where you are. I can get a 50mm/1.8 at about 100$, so I would not buy an adapter so costly.

    Great review. I feel like Canon and Nikon are not taking Mirrorless seriously and are trying to protect their DSLR strongholds. To me, this feels like a 'me too' product because Canon were possibly pressured to make a mirrorless.
    When you consider, in this price-range you can get an Olympus OMD-E5, a Sony a6000, or a Fujifilm XT-10, this camera is laughable. As a 6D user, I want Canon to do better, and I'm hoping the next generation of their mirrorless will be up to grade.

    • @cooloox
      @cooloox 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      This camera is probably a lot better than you think it is. It's too slow at continuous AF on moving subjectd, but otherwise it focuses quite rapidly, from my experience with this camera. Image quality is great for a crop sensor camera.

    • @TimLucasdesign
      @TimLucasdesign 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +cooloox I'm sure it is very good, as the review here suggests. I may have been a bit harsh, but I just feel Sony Olympus and Fuji are a step ahead in the mirrorless world, and I would choose any of their systems over this camera. Like I said, I'm a Canon user and want to remain with them - they need to do better :)

      +Tim Lucas I hear what you are saying!! If They've implemented the Wi-Fi with a good app and the NFC, a great touchscreen, etc. People like to see numbers, so a real 6 or 8fps shooting mode, meaning you actually get 6/8fps sharply-focused images, would be an absolute winner. That plus a very high ISO ability with relatively low noise and then people might start paying attention. The camera does have a good High ISO NR mode and Hand-Held Night Shot mode... but these only produce jpegs. The camera takes multiple (4) shots in rapid succession and blends them to a single image with low noise. Everyone keeps talking about video too, so 4K needs to come sooner rather than later, or 1080P in higher quality with 120FPS.

    - Grip could be better
    - No 4K video (even phones have it now)
    - No built in EVF

    Great review Chris/Jordan, I really appreciate the great job you do presenting these new toys. Even though it doesn't seem completely up to par with a Fuji/Olympus/Sony APS-C mirrorless, it looks like Canon has begun to take mirrorless seriously. Does the 14-bit raw seem to do anything for them? I expected to see a bit more in terms of dynamic range, but it still seems a bit flat. Also, what EF lenses did you try out with it?

    Well, the m3 does have superior image rendition to the gx8(+ z17) or the a6000(+ sigma19/sony20) with the 22mm as a compact stealth street walker. Add the fact that you can adapt the amazing pancake 40, that's a big deal to consider.

    • @1barnet1
      @1barnet1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      First rendering is debateable. It has good noise performance but not great dynamic range.
      it's also about 3-4x slower when shooting raw images. Doesn't have ibis evf nor weathersealing of the Gx8.
      And then we come at crappy soft video vs one of the best 4k capability on the market

    • @YannickKhong
      @YannickKhong 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mustn't confuse dynamic range with contrast. There's recovering a shadow then there's hdr, then there's exposure incompetence.
      Speed matters less in real world still subject "sightseeing" uses unless camera user is "chasing something moving" perhaps doing squirrel photography on an daily basis.
      What will the 4k everyday video user do today? :-D

    From outside of Japan, Canon may seem like it`s `not trying`. And I guess maybe that is the truth. But within Japan, they have millions and millions of customers who buy this camera, especially EF lens users, and I am sure they`re not bothered by the superior competition. Being able to just throw one of my 6 EF lenses on an extra body this small, with that adaptor which includes a tripod mount, is a huge huge bonus.

      I'd definitely look at the EOS M3 amongst others. I'm very happy with mine and the image quality is great. Focusing is fast if you're not doing continuous AF on fast moving subjects.
      The camera has a lot of things not mentioned, like WiFi (with great app to fully control camera remotely), NFC, High ISO Noise Reduction mode (takes 4 shots in rapid succession at high ISO and combines them to a single low noise image), Hand-held Night Shot mode (works similarly to High ISO NR mode). Best touchscreen I've seen. There's a lot more than what I've mentioned.

    I produce studio type videos for TH-cam and have a budget of about $600-800 for a mirror less camera/lens. My main factors is having a mic input for a Rode Video Mic Go and being able to shoot 1080p at 60 frames. The only camera that keeps popping up is the M3, as the Sonys do not have a mic input. What would you recommend?

    • @kinachahue
      @kinachahue 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +The RCNetwork The M3 doesn't do 1080p @ 60fps, only at 24 and 30. Canon's new G5x would work but the Panasonic G7 would be the best option, plus you could shoot 4k if desired though their 1080p looks good as is, www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonic-lumix-dmc-g7. You can get it for $600 now w/ 14-42 lens (28-84mm). I have an a6000 but the g7 is really tempting.

    Everyone is so in love with the Sony a6000, in my area, but although the AF is slightly better, it's not all that and the jpeg's are horrible after ISO of 400! Noisy when cropped which is surprising due to the sensor size. I soooo wanted Canon to have it right this time. I would love Fuji xt10 but I can't afford the glass to do it justice. I have never tried a micro 4/3rds and from what I can tell,the Olympus OMD5 or is it ome5...?...seems like a very capable camera. I need to replace my DSLR. This will not be a back up camera. I broke my T3i but it was time to move onward and upward. I shoot everything. I am getting into time lapse big time and Olympus has a time lapse feature. Right now,I'm using my Sony Xperia Z3 with Framlapse app. Maybe I will just get the M3. It does take beautiful images.Ugh!!! 👍

  • @Photographicelements
    @Photographicelements 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    canon also makes a 15-45mm mirrorless lens & a whole new amateur-grade mirrorless camera, the m10.
    the adapter is great, but big L lenses on this camera throws the balance off and puts added strain on your wrists when shooting all day.
    note: the autofocus never stops trying focus, so switch it to manual focus when you're not using it.
    you can get the m3 body only for 500.00US
    the m1 was a much sturdier built camera, everything on the m3 just seems so fragile. i worry about the new flip screen & the reduced weather sealing.
    did you talk about the flash?
    when you have a big lens with adapter on the m3, the pop-up flash casts a shadow over one third of the frame; only use m lenses or short lens when using the pop-up flash. it's nice you can bend it to bounce it off the ceiling.
    the m3 has canon's new raw file, which is great, unless you're using lightroom 5, then it is not compatible :/ (lightroom 6 and cc can read the raw file).
    the a6000 is an amazing camera and a much better still photography camera, but focus point select is buried in the menus and for video, no mic input.

    • @cooloox
      @cooloox 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, be careful what you type! If you mean the EOS M3 then you're talking rubbish. In the menu system you can turn continuous AF on or off (and just fyi this has nothing to do with servo AF which can also be turned on or off).
      I turned my continuous AF off as soon as I read the handbook! It drains the battery and serves no useful purpose. I very much doubt the EOS M10 can't turn this feature off as it's basically an improved EOS M.

    • @cooloox
      @cooloox 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, I just read the rest of your biased BS! The camera is still metal with polycarbonate and rubber panels to feel better and more grippy. This camera feels like a tank! Next, use the free software which converts a batch of CR2 files to DNG files in seconds and you can process to your heart's content in LR. Photoshop actually opens M3 RAW images, so it's odd.
      The camera has a better screen than the A6000 with more accurate focusing and better metering. Better colour reproduction! Did you know that in a tricky lighting situation where the subject is constantly moving in and out of direct sunlight while on a dark stage ... While you're adjusting exposure compensation like a fiddler's elbow (as I have to do on my DSLRs) I can simply tap the subject's face and then literally shoot to my heart's content while the camera gets exposure-after-exposure-after-exposure right without any manual intervention? This camera tracks and meters whatever subject you tap on (doesn't have to be a face or even a person). I take photos, I don't wank on about specs and fantasies!
      The A6000 does continuous servo AF miles faster, but it also gets a lot of shots out-of-focus in the process. For example, it couldn't keep up with Tony Northrup's wife jogging on the beach towards the camera. It got 2fps in focus which the EOS M3 could probably match! I've done it with a kitten running around.
      If you are going to make comments then give accurate ones and balanced ones. Give the good with the bad or you're plain dishonest!

    • @Photographicelements
      @Photographicelements 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +cooloox i spoke from my own experience, not stats. this is actually helpful, thanks. i used & owned the m1 since it first came out & liked it's rugged design, even used it in the rain with absolutely no problems. i had meant the screen on the m3 is way more fragile than the 70D & can easily be damaged when bumped while open-the m1 has no tilt screen so takes more bumps.
      what lens are you using? that would greatly affect speed. m lenses? stm?
      i will look into turning off continuous af, but it is great for video.
      which free software converter are you talking about? are you referring to adobe dng converter pro? if so, that program does not recognize new canon m3 cr2 raw files. which version of photoshop are referring to? photoshop cs6 does not read canon m3 raw files. yes, i watched the tony north video, but i've used the a6000 with better results than that. i own the m3 & hv had to baby it & time the shots; i am way faster on 5Dii, 5Diii, 60D,7Dii &70D (and faster on the a6000).

    • @Photographicelements
      @Photographicelements 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      as much as I love the M3, it performed poorly at a photoshoot recently. the M3 is a great APS-C pocket camera, but I'm downgrading from photography 2nd camera status as it was unreliable.
