- Fishing it old school can be dangerous! We had to dodge a few golf balls while fishing near this golf course in Austin, Texas! This week the Bassin' Buds head to Lake Austin in Central Texas to hunt bluegill and bass with Simple Spinners, a new line of custom in-line spinners. In-line spinners catch almost everything that swims and are great for tempting panfish and largemouth bass. Lures like the Mepps Agila, Blue Fox Vibrax, Woorden's Roostertail, and Panther Martin Teardrop Spinners have been catching fish for years, and it's cool to see the younger generation embrace this old school fishing lure. Taking your kids fishing is one of the most important and fun things you can do as a parent and I'm betting almost all of us have great stories to tell about when our folks took us fishing. Loved it when your little buddy was encouraging you and giving advice on reeling that fish in. That's gold brother! And your girl driving the boat - that's a right of passage!

Inline spinners are my favorite way to catch trout, panfish and the occasional Bass. Especially on light and ultralight rods.

I love fishing old school baits, I currently fish with a variety of rabble rouser baits they swim and have action like no other crankbait!

Those were definitely a mix of Redbreast Sunfish, Bluegill, and hybrids of the two! Redbreast are some of my favorite to catch because they put up such a good fight and grow larger than most of the other sunfish!

Looks like a really nice area to fish. I usually dress a single hook and swap the treble out for it on the smaller spinners. It makes it wayyy easier to unhook.
The old in-line spinner is still one of the most universal and effective lures out there. Don’t discount them for big bass either, I caught one of my biggest on one as a by catch while trout fishing. Was a heck of a fight on 4 pound test on my ultra light trout rig.

I got my pb muskie on a #3 mepps, 45 inches. I have caught trout, salmon, pike ,bass and walleye all on inline spinners, such an effective lure.

Looks like a Redbreast Sunfish. Awesome spinners. Makes me want to bust out my old micro spinners and take my daughter out. She watched this episode with me. We love the episodes with your kids.
I still use inline spinners for stream trout and most river fishing, they work as well as they ever have. I prefer Panther Martin models for trout, and Mepps and Rooster Tails for bass, pike walleye and white bass. Size 0 & 1 for trout and panfish, and size 3 or larger for the other species.
Yes, those are long ear sunfish. Although, usually they tend to be more colorful in other parts of the country. Those might be a hybrid species, but as long as those 'ears' are, it's hard to say.
Unfortunately I found Retro Bassin late and I googled this gentleman’s website and it seems he sadly went out of business. Looks like they were great lures. Great video.

It's hard to beat a simple spinner. I could be a happy angler even if all I ever had to fish with was some inline spinners & some beetle spins.
I was about 9 years old and casting a mepps caught a 37 inch pike. Had no idea what it was thought it was an alligator 😄. Ran into the house for help as it was flopping in the grass. Honestly that channel had 10 people fishing it every weekend as my catch was the talk of the town. Small town in Wisconsin by the way.
An almost 100 year old design that is so simple and yet so effective. I almost always start out with them, they are great as search bait. Had a great time watching you fishing with the kids, thanks for sharing.
You know, I would be genuinely interested to see how many fish I caught as a kid on a beetlespin vs how many fish I catch now on expensive gear.

Great vid...a couple of questions. Was your son fishing an old school Abu Garcia spinning rod? Those were my go to worm and top water rods. Use to find them at KMart for a song. Second question...were did you purchase/obtain the lure decals on your windshield? My tracker is missing the windshield (long story). I was thinking along the same lines to update my console.

One of the best multi species baits ever made was the unline spinner. I use to love fishing the terminator titanium one. Haven't found any in years though.

The technology is amazing but frankly I think it makes for poor fisherman in many ways. It’s video game fishing and not learning your lake or fish habits. Okay putting away old man soap box. Love those simple spinners. Still work & I love seeing the kiddos out there. Fewer Xboxes & more tackle boxes. Good video. Enjoyed it.
