      I woke up once during my VNS implant surgery (incisions on my left chest and neck), so they saw my eyes flutter. Surgeon lifted the eye tape and my eye flicked open and started looking around. The look of horror on his face was scary. It took a few minutes to get put fully under again, but holy crap. Thankful that only happened once.

      There's nothing wrong with surgery as long as you are doing it for yourself and no one else. People don't always want Plastic surgery to fit the modern beauty standards. It's important for many reasons, medical, mental, in the trans community and even small surgical procedures in piercing worlds are a form of self expression. So there are many motivations and it's narrow minded to place people in a box and think procedures are being done for one reason only.

      It’s absolutely unreal how quickly they send people home here in the USA. Often times family members feel very ill-equipped to handle the responsibilities that go along with caring for the needs of someone right out of the hospital. Our daughter had a massive spinal fusion surgery. They kept her 5 days and I thought that was super long but she still was on several medications and in extreme pain and it was a very daunting task. Thankfully, I work in the medical field but someone who doesn’t would be beside themselves with the amount of meds and care and pain. It’s insane!

    • @unknownentity7964
      @unknownentity7964 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@melodiem2408 holy heck, that's so few days!! I've had many spinal fusions/revisions and hardware removal due to infections, and the earliest I ever stayed was 11 days, most were 2 weeks or more. The 11 days was shorter because they were only taking out some broken screws, so it wasn't that intensive comparatively.
      I cannot imagine how I'd have coped being sent home that early, or how my family would have cared for me. This is even with 2 doctors in my family, and my mum being my full time caregiver. Even she wouldn't have felt capable to look after me at home in her own at that point.
      I live in the UK where healthcare is free, so if anything, you'd think that it was here that they'd want to discharge you as soon as possible, as the system isn't being run by incredibly rich corporations. It's so heartbreaking to see so many stories where people in the US suffer massively from complications or even death, due to money saving policies, so a few rich healthcare companies can get even richer

      @@unknownentity7964 Wow! You’ve been through a lot! I’m glad you can get the care you need without the major burden of the expense. Our daughter’s surgery was almost $300,000 and that was 5 years ago already! Thankfully we qualified for special assistance at that time and all of it was covered but if she were to have it now, we’d be left with 20% at least. I don’t even want to think about it. 😳🥺 I wish you well!

    • @unknownentity7964
      @unknownentity7964 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@melodiem2408 it's so sad that you even have to consider if you are covered or not! It's great that you're not in debt because of that, but I can't imagine they the worry about if you would be or not couldn't have helped at the time.
      I'm so glad that I live where I do. I'm so lucky that I'm able to get my caregiving needs covered(my mum gets paid a full time wage, but I can also choose to pay a caregiver from a company too. I just prefer my mum right now, as during covid I felt safer with her. But I'm moving soon and will go back to having company caregivers, and my mum will be back to fostering special needs babies!) , as well as costs for an electric wheelchair, an adapted car that has ramps plus very customised hand controls for my needs.
      If I didn't have all those things, then I wouldn't be able to work. It's BECAUSE I have that 'government aid' that I'm able to work and pay back taxes, paying towards the system that helps me. Often people view government aid as something that people just take and take from, a total drain but that's not necessarily the case. It can be what enables people to be able to work and put back into society. Of course, even with supports, some people still can't work but it's our job as decent people to want to help those people. Especially because everyone is only one accident or illness away from potentially being in that situation. As it stands, my illness is terminal, so eventually I will become too sick to work, in which case I'm happy that I've been able to pay back some now at least, while I can
      I hope your daughter is doing well today, and you stay in medical coverage and away from debt :)

    I’ve had many, many surgeries throughout the course of my life - none were elective - and I can’t imagine wanting any kind of elective surgery so badly that I’d go through that yet again. Just seeing this woman after her surgery makes me feel awful, remembering what that feels like. I have to work hard to avoid a panic attack if I even go visit someone in a hospital, so walking in to volunteer for a surgical procedure under general anesthesia would probably cause me to have a full meltdown.

    • @Dekubud
      @Dekubud ปีที่แล้ว +8

      While I would get surgery simply to "look good", I have to say that sometimes, elective surgery can still be much better than your living situation. For example, I am trans and living with breasts is daily psychological torture for me. I already had a breast reduction due to physical pain before I understood I am trans, so I know what I am in for, but I would much rather get surgery to have a masculine chest than to live with boobs the rest of my life.
      I wonder if you had bad experiences because your body is already fighting something else. I've had two surgeries so far, and have two chronic illnesses, but my health issues are fairly manageable, so recovering, while tiring, was never too big a deal for me.
      I hope you get better in both mental and physical health! If you don't already see someone, I think a good psychologist could help you manage what sounds like trauma. And it's very understandable: a lot of people end up traumatised from the hospital.

    • @unknownentity7964
      @unknownentity7964 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm sorry to hear that you have such level of health anxiety. I'm in the same situation - I've had many many surgeries, some of them have been scheduled in advanced so I Could mentally prepare myself for them but many have been emergency surgery with no time to mentally cope. I still have to visit the same hospitals where so much of my trauma happened (such as, every time I see my neurologist, I have to go past the corridor where I stopped breathing and had to have a breathing tube put down my throat with me still fully conscious but paralysed) and it never seems to get easier but sadly I can't opt out of those appointments.
      One day, I feel like I will add in this health related PTSD in therapy but my health is still a crazy roller-coaster of ups and downs, medical emergencies keep happening so it never feels like the right time to start therapy because I've never got to a place where it's all in the past
      I truly, truly hate the feeling of when you're making your way to the hospital for a surgery. The whole way there, all I can think of is that I'm essentially volunteering to put myself to be sliced open and mashed up, causing extreme pain and negative experiences. I realise that I am going to the hospital voluntarily, just to end up feeling very ill for an unknown length of time. In some ways, emergency surgery is better because at least then, you don't have to resist the fight or flight instinct in your brain to just run away and not put myself through yet another surgery and trauma.
      Unfortunately though, those surgeries aren't something I can just opt out of, not doing them will result in more pain than the surgery itself would cause, or even death. I just have to keep reminding myself that I've got through it every time in the past, so I'll be able to do it again. Even if I feel like I can't

    • @unknownentity7964
      @unknownentity7964 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@Dekubud I truly believe that in situations where not getting a surgery would end up causing you significant mental harm, it stops being elective. In the same way that many people with the breast cancer gene opt to get their breasts removed before any sign of cancer, because living with the thought they cancer could strike at any moment is too much to cope with mentally- it's the same for many with dysphoria etc. Living with that mental suffering makes surgery to relive it just as necessary as a surgery that's needed for physical pain. Neither are 'elective' in my eyes

      Just so you know, elective surgery just means "scheduled in advance" not optional. During the pandemic a lot of elective surgeries were pushed back, but a lot of people didn't realize that many of those procedures are still really important. I woke up during abdominal surgery when the 11" cut was open. I screamed, and the 2 anaesthetists (1 senior & 1 junior) ran to my side. I heard one say (we've taken her out too much). I was quickly put under and awoke later to a beautifully stitched scar and pain-free from a drip.
    Next day I asked my surgeon about waking up. He gently told me that was rare. It didn't cause me any trauma. A few years later I was rushed to hospital for a more serious surgery. I had no fear at all. I trust surgeons and hospital staff, which makes a difference. My recovery time is fast and both Surgeons said it is because of my attitude. That brought me great relief.

      Did they decide to do something different or change the anesthetic they used, so that you didn't throw up? I've had a similar amount of surgeries, and nothing they ever do has stopped me from throwing up after. It just seems to be my body's natural reaction to it. I wish there was something to stop it happening though , because waking up from some of my spine surgeries, and open abdomen surgery meant throwing up in the recovery area was absolute agony. Throwing up uses all of the muscles and areas that had just been sliced and diced. They even tried placing an NG tube to drain my stomach, but I ended up just dry retching forever instead. So, if you have any tips then I'd gratefully receive them!! I'm going in for my next abdominal surgery on the 4th November. It's going be a big one, so I'd really rather not rip open my stitches via vomit again... The surgeon was not happy!!

    I don't care about anaesthesia. I've dislocated my left shoulder once and my right shoulder four times, the only narcotic that works is Dilaudid (I've heard shoulder injuries are one of the most painful things one can experience). There was one time they did it while I was awake using fentanyl, I was bedridden for a week. I worship anaesthesia. I worry that the painkillers will wear off, not that the anaesthesia will wear off.

    I will start this by saying, I am very pro surgery. Be that to repair something broken, snip a ligament or lift something (which I know I will want sometime in the next 10 years if possible). My very first surgery outside of tonsils was due to a sports injury. I was 14 and was so worried in recovery because I was absolutely certain that I called my surgeon an asshole during the surgery. I was questioning the nurse and my mom if I had called the doctor a bad name and saying I needed to apologize, they assured me I did not and it was just weird thoughts coming out of the anesthesia. Never had that happen again, but I always have a what if in the back of my mind when I have to have surgeries!

    I have never worried about surgery or how much pain I'll be in after after I come to. When I had my gull bladder removed, the pain was worst before the surgery then after the operation. It was an emergency surgery and I was told by the resident that they got in just in time because my gallbladder ready to burst. I felt sorry for the surgeon though because I felt I ruined his leisure time because the operation was done on a Saturday and my husband did end up seeing me in the recovery room. The next time I saw the surgeon, he seemed so excited about the size of the stone. He said, I wanted you to have it so it was given to me and I still have it. I had that operation in August of 1977 but I was admitted to the hospital in July, and there a surgeon assigned to my case . My son was born in May and because I was nursing, the doctor let me bring him into the hospital during the day to nurse him because he was not doing well on formula. I was content to stay in the hospital because I was not seperated from my baby. Once they figured out the diagnosis, I was sent home and the operation was going to be done at a later time after my son was weaned off the breast milk but I could not wait.
    This also reminds me of the video that Dr. Youn did about coming in and holding the hand of a heart patients every day and the impact it made on the patient. My son was the first baby that the hospital let in to be with a mother. It was uplifting to my recovery not being separated from my new born. When I was going, home my surgeon said "you and your baby made a big impact on the hospital." Now new born baby's are allowed to be with their mothers when they have to be admitted to the hospital.😀

I'd had 3 surgeries in 5 days, the original removal operation then twice they had to go back in to stop the crazy bleeding. I have a connective tissue disease too(kEDS+mitochondrial disease). I'd rrate my tonsillectomy worse than any of my spine fusions, because for those I at least had a morphine and ketamine pump! Plus I was alot younger which helped to not remember as much

      I had a big surgery recently and I wasn’t this loopy. My surgery was way more intense than hers I think too, since they were removing breast tissue. I’m in the states. But I think it’s also how much anesthesia they give you, plus your sensitivity. I ended up going home after a few hours, I was able to walk around the first night. They tell you to so. I was talking to my family, sitting up. I was probably in surgery for almost 5 hours. Although I was very sensitive to the low dosage opiates they had prescribed, I was scratching like crazy 🫤!
      But she had a nose job done too, which is insane 😮! That must be so painful, prob why she was so drugged up 🫣! At least she could lay on her back the first day, I couldn’t do this. Plus she chose this, I had little choice. I had to sleep sitting up. It was horrible and painful experience 😢…

    From a patients point of view: I've had multiple medically necessary breast reconstructions from age 16-23 along with gallbladder removal. I am also a medical philosopher who is very comfortable and at peace with the idea of dying. My lack of nerves before any revision surgery is due to a combination of having been put under successfully so many times as well as not being afraid of dying. I am well educated on the risks going in, they just don't make me nervous. I do still take every surgery seriously and know what is on the line everytime I go under.

    • @nicked_fenyx
      @nicked_fenyx ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you would be an exception for a doctor like Dr. Youn, and he would completely understand your lack of nerves. Doctors tend to deal slightly differently and have different parameters of what's "normal" for patients who have more experience dealing with medical issues. I think what Dr. Youn was talking about was more for patients like Larissa who are completely new to plastic surgery. In cases like hers, a patient having zero nervousness could indicate they aren't taking the surgery seriously enough, or haven't truly accepted that the risks (however minimal) are real and could truly happen to them. Obviously there will be some people who are able to accept those risks and have no nerves whatsoever, even on their first surgery, but I'd wager those people are much less common than those who either 1) feel nervous, or 2) gloss over the risks in their excitement over getting the surgery they want. In the latter case, it's important for surgeons to ensure their patients do indeed understand the potential risks, and have properly weighed those risks against the benefits in making their decision.

    I just had a breast augmentation a week ago today. My husband was obsessed with me before, and now he is even more so! Indomr blame him! I can't stop looking at myself! It is a whole new confidence!!!

      I've wanted my breast done for nearly 10 years. I lost a ton of weight to compete in bodybuilding and went from a c cup to saggy deflated raisins. I'm so embarrassed by them. My husband doesn't care we've been together for 13 years but I feel so insecure. What size were you before your surgery and what size did you go to?

    I would never go out with a women that had plastic surgery since the way she looks would be a lie and would not take a chance of having a child with one. If she goes for plastic surgery after we were married on her way back from the surgery I would serve her with divorce papers.

      He could’ve worded it a little different, the word excessive was a little … excessive hahaha I don’t think he means ill though I assume that he chose that word based on his experiences with how women want theirs to be when they visit him for tiddy augmentation :)

    • @nicked_fenyx

      He never said there was something "wrong" with it. Just that some women don't like the way it looks, and want to change it. As long as those women are mentally capable of weighing the pros and cons of surgery, I don't see an issue with allowing them to change their body to be closer to what they personally want it to look like.

    Hey Doc. I don't agree with you on the, shoulder belt. I do on the seatbelt.. And here's why about the, shoulder belt..
    Okay so,, my friend had a breast reduction. And on the way home. Driving in my 1986, Cadillac Fleetwood brome De Elegance'. When some idiot turned left in front of us. And nearly totaled my Cadillac. My partner's chest. Got all screwed up and scarred. And looked strange later. Due to the shoulder belt chafing across their chest. In the crash. They would've stayed in their seat. With the shoulder belt behind them with their seatbelt secured. This would not have happened quite like that.
    And so there you go Doc. There was a good reason not to have the shoulder belt across her chest. On that ride home. As long as the seatbelt was secured. And it was. And then maybe she would need a nose job correction instead? As her nose goes into the dashboard. But she does not get ejected through the front window. Because she has her seatbelt on. Just so you know.
    So you might be good with, Arriola Reductions. But didn't notice they had the circular stitch of her seatbelt, on? You missed that? Slanted eyes maybe? I would not know? I do not have slanted eyes. As I'm an, Audio Engineer. Of over 50+ years. And I have slanted, ears. That hears, better than most. As I protected my hearing all my lifelong. And at 67. I CAN HEAR! OH WOW! Cool! Everything sounds great, still! Through both ears! I can hear stereo! I can see in stereo! It's amazing! Maybe it'll catch on? We can only hope?
    I want to get a new Brain Implant! I need one desperately! Mine is not working! Anymore. Yet.
