    The stock filter for the cv carb is a very good one and shrouded for a reason. Any side winds will upset a carb with the K&N little filter on. You can clean the stock one by pulling the black cross and foam out with needle nose pliers. Clean and refit. Then you can add a little aircleaner foam on top for easier cleaning.

    Side stand safety switch can be a major pain on DRs. If you are accelerating over bumps and corrugations it can activate and cut power.

    I got my factory style plug from Pro Cycle. I wired my GPS to the other key on/off plug that is in the wire harness under the headlight cover. The plug from Pro Cycle has wires coming out of it, so all you have to do is connect the wires to your device wires. Pro Cycle lists it as Auxiliary Power Plug and it has a built in fuse.

    • @SwankyCatProductions
      @SwankyCatProductions  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've seen that!!! I was actually going to pick one up, but decided to split my fusing out since the GPS already had one inline and my seat heater will need another. Looks like a pretty slick design though!

    The grease looked good on your filter. I been doing that on my bikes way back in the 70s. Yea im old! I have a DR 650 and it is hard to explain to someone just how good it is even though it doesnt excel at anything. I know someone who has a new Harley. It has been back to the shop 6 times in less than a year for issues and check engine lights. I told him buy a DR and you will never see a check engine light! Haha. Simple is good for me!

      Tell your Harley buddy about the DRs more cruiser like cousin, the DL650 / Suzuki V-Strom - literally the worlds longest production ADV Touring bike 20 years strong (not quite as long as the DR but it got a head start).
      I'm here watching DR stuff cause it's more dirt bike-ish but my beloved V-Strom is my daily ride year round.

    I am enjoying the further updates on the carpuride. I was going to ask you to give us more updates on that system as you ride the bike and get used to it, but you gave us an update.
    The throttle cables open and close a butterfly valve in the Venturi and the internal carburetor vacuum system operates the slide. It definitely helps to drill the secondary hole in the slide. Throttle response is much better. When you get to the performance parts, try to get a Dyno jet kit. I put Dyno Jets in my KLX's KLRs and XRLs. When I went to buy the carburetor kit for the DR, I couldn't find a Dyno jet kit and had to get a different brand. That brand didn't come with a new jet needle, which it needs for better low and mid-range. The kit I bought came with shims for the top of the stock jet needle where it goes through the slide. It's crisp, but it's no XRL. And by all means keep up with that little bitty o ring that goes between the CV plastic cap and the carburetor body. Your choke assembly will be none functional if you lose the o-ring. I have done that a few times by mistake.
    I am sure you are getting all kinds of advice... Poor Ben.
    I can't wait to see what you come up with. I am assuming your weather is about to turn cold and all of us followers in the south will not get to see you do the power up mods until spring...rats!
    I am super curious about the carpuride. I have a Garmin Montana which is nifty, but the screen is so small. I don't like having to move my eyes from where I am focusing on the trail to look down at the Garmin and focus on it. I always choose to stop. Carpuride is very interesting.
    I like the way you do the affiliate links, makes it easy for us old timers.

    You say you’re not a mechanic but you’re a lot more clever than me when it comes to wiring and stuff like that. For some reason I’m not able to grasp electrical at all. I’m a little better with the mechanical end of things. Nice job fixing it.

      Thanks!!! There's always a fair amount of wiring going on in my head before and in-between filming. So it just looks easy in the videos 😆. I also did a bit of wiring and wire diagram drawing, back when I was an Engineering Specialist in my old life. So I learned a substantial amount from that and just apply it to the bikes now. Kinda funny how it all worked out, must have been the plan all along I suppose! 🙏

    Those solder/heat shrink connectors are known as environmental splices, meaning they are used to keep the environment out of your connection, preventing corrosion and deterioration (we used them on the A7 and A6 aircraft I worked on in the Navy years ago). Nice job on tracking down and fixing the problem. I have had the DR for a year, and I love it, but I think I am going to sell it and get a V-Strom 800DE. I think I can still do a BDR on the V-Strom, but also have a better road experience. Enjoyed the video.

      That's a good name! Should be easy to remember too! Yeah, the DR is an awesome ride, but I'll bet the DE would be great for BDRs and longer, higher speed rides on the road. I'm glad to hear that, thank you!!!

  • @markjeepingful

    Wow you sprayed a lot of oil on that foam filter!!! I would lightly spray and squeeze it to make sure it gets all over. If you feel loss of power or choking, clean air filter again and this time spray lightly. That goes same with KN air filter too.

    I love my DR, but the air filter system I hate. I have a very hard time putting back together after I get the filter lube. If anyone has any suggestions on how to get things lined up and back in place and bolted up, give me a shout. The secondary air filter must be kept clean or you will get poor performance. A suggestion with it is get some foam for a lawn mower, that is thick, cut it to size and put it in the plastic housing. This gives more filtration and help keep dirt out of the carb.

  • @fm4695
    @fm4695 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Looks like you got the DR sorted! It seems like you're investing a lot of cash into the DR platform to make it comparable with the XR? The DR was the bike I had settled on until I stumbled onto an ad for a like-new 2021 XR650L (which I'd never considered - I wanted a KLR first then migrated to the DR and sorta settled there). After seeing the ad for the XR it was all over for me! Between the initial owner (a life-long MX racer) and myself the bike has had about every mod except a different carb or the 2nd and 5th gear swap-out and it absolutely rocks for my use.
    Thanks for the great content!

  • @Nine_883
    @Nine_883 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    The DR had a problem, but you keep talking about the XR so this is confusing in the beginning of the video. The first thing I would have done was jump box. Lithium batteries die hard when they die. If you let the voltage get too low the battery dies and won’t really charge up like a regular lead acid battery. Have you heard of the “add a fuse” pig tails? You find a switched fuse and pull it. Plug in the “add a fuse” to that circuit and your fuse for the additional circuit and it’s done. Been using them for years. I figured everyone knew about these. Yeah and never let a lithium battery go dead.

      I need to get a test ride on a 300! I will say that I like the big bores much better on the road than any 250 I've ridden, but there's no contest off road. Lighter is always better there! Glad to hear you got the XT set up well, I should try that with my Dad's Sherpa 250. It supposedly makes 30ish HP, but revs way to slow. Link to the swanky what?

    I bet none of them fixed it. It was probably your kickstand switch, and the problem will come back. Or your exhaust valve sensor is malfunctioning.
    I know, you only did three things to it.
    Plus put it inside. And probably cleaned it up a bit.

    Hello! Cool glass! I also have DR, I’m thinking about getting one for myself. It looks quite tall. What is your height? Doesn't it bother you to watch it while driving while sitting?

    • @SwankyCatProductions
      @SwankyCatProductions  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you! I'm 5'10" or 177.8cm tall. It's not in my way unless I'm sitting down off road on really technical trails. On the road I can see over it, the camera is below my chin so it looks like it's more in the way than it actually is. When I stand up off road, it's completely out of my way and more or less disappears behind the chin bar on my helmet. Once in a while when I need to look directly down in front of my tire, it can get in the way, but it's a small sacrifice for the wind protection and place to mount a GPS.

      @garyhoward2490 Are you deliberately being ignorant? Suzuki has a long history of racing with championships too... sooo are you just willfully ignorant or prefer alt facts over actual facts?

      @@fm4695 I know you didn't ask me but when I was researching which bike to get there were a few good reasons I chose the DR over the XR. Biggest issues from memory: cush drive wears out the front spline shaft much quicker which requires an engine tear down to fix it. Heating issues, the XR is known to run much hotter than the DR as the DR has higher oil capacity and an oil cooler. Heat is the biggest killer of oil and bearings in air/oil cooled engines. So just these two things alone are huge. But there's also the fact that there are just more aftermarket options for the DR to build it to suit my style. ADV one day with hundreds of miles on the road for over the course of a week. Or slow single track in 100+ degree heat (where the XR would suffer more) the next. Also the seat height matters when you're off-road and need to get a foot or two down on rocks, logs, or slippery terrain or lift the bike in those same conditions. The DR is at least 2" lower and can be lowered even more via factory settings. Look up which bikes have ridden around the globe or taken long multi month trips more in harsh terrain. It's pretty much never the XR for a reason. The XR is better off-road as it has better suspension and ground clearance. That's about it...

    • @fm4695
      @fm4695 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@intrigue175175 Thank you! Those are all items I was aware of (and fully remedied on my bike), but I'm not an expert and wondered if there was something I missed. The DR is crazy popular for a very good reason! However, I've lowered my XR650L, added an oil-cooler, and a larger/wider front sprocket. Additionally, I have wider foot pegs, brush guards, a center-stand, and steel brake lines. I believe all the typical XR650L shortfalls are attended to (aside from splitting the cases for the 2nd and 5tgh gear upgrade).
