    In this review, we’re going to be taking a look at the Boundary Supply Errant-a 24 liter backpack that boasts some great functionality in a slick and minimal form factor.
    According to Google, “errant” has two definitions. The first is “traveling in search of adventure,” and the second is “erring or straying from the proper course or standards.” We think both of these definitions fit the Errant backpack quite well, depending on what aspects of the bag you’re talking about.
    On one hand, it’s designed for minimal one bag travel. On the other hand, it does stray a bit from the norm and what we’ve seen on other packs. We’ve been really pleased with some of these unique features, while some have left us a bit disappointed.
    We normally don't bring up price with bags, because we're always happy to pay for quality. But there’s no getting around it-the Boundary Supply Errant is an incredible value for what's offered. Overall, this is a solid pack that looks great and is a joy to use, especially if you're the type of person that likes to geek out about about little details and organization on packs. If you can look past the top access being a bit slow and you don't feel strongly about needing a sternum strap, the Errant is a great option to be used as a daily driver or for minimal travel as a one-bag travel backpack.

      I'm a traditional 9-5 go into the office worker. So I use daily carry bags on vacation to hold small electronics, ID's and purchases I make along the way to keep my hands free. So after witnessing several people who were pick pocketed in Barcelona or wearing backpacks on their front, I decided I didn't want to do that so I now carry the PACSAFE venturesafe GII 25L or 15L depending on my length of trip. Plus I don't have to watch my items as close and enjoy my trip more.

    Great review Tom! As a pack enthusiast, I actually bought this, been using it for about 4 months now, loving it. I think for it's size the sternum strap isn't needed so I ditched it, but agreed it didn't look the most secure. One part of the review I would challenge though is that I think the magnets to open/close the main compartment is one of the most satisfying and coolest ways to open/close any bag. Once you know how to do it's incredibly easy and fast.. and so satisfying to do. Maybe it with more time you would have got the hang of it better, and you don't need to zip the bag to do it, plus you don't actually need to use it as much as the laptop section. One small gripe, I felt it was smaller than a 24L, did you find there was less space than a usual 24L pack?

    Nice review. I also found the sternum strap to be useless, and ditched it - fortunately the pack carries comfortably without it. I pretty sure that the velcro "pocket" on the side is actually there to stash that extra strap on the back in case you don't want to use it (which is what I did). This bag really sings when you're using the camera gear accessories, which is the primary reason I bought it. After using it as my EDC for several weeks, I'm very impressed. Keep up the good work.

    Just got mine today. Same color as yours (slate blue). Very cool packing. No idea what's about all those straps and pockets at first, but learnt after watching your video. Very clever design to take off those sternum straps and hip straps (never need those for my everyday use). High quality materials and comfortable to carry. Interior a little bit packed but let's see how it works when I started using it. I'm happy with this backpack.

    Great review! A few small details I really appreciate on this bag: it stands up by itself, the rigid top handle is helpful to quickly move the bag around, that top mesh pocket is so versatile, the bag's slim form factor and very comfortable straps and back panel. My sternum strap is locked in nicely - I leave it there all the time. I purchased two strong magnets to put behind the main compartment's fidlocks (inside the top Nywool pocket), which has helped immensely with the top lid closure.

    At 8:38 that's when a lot of people noticed issues, especially if their backpack is uneven.
    A lot people try to do it with a single hand, but it works better with both hands trying to navigate it to close. Not ideal but it is what it is for now.
    It's really close in being a great backpack. A second iteration of this pack can do better, I don't give up on the company just yet.

    Bag is very small as each organization pocket doesn't have it's own dimensions or inflate outwards. If you want to put stuff in the water bottle slot outside or commuter pocket, you sacrifice the inner mesh pockets on the interior, they become useless. If you want to put lots inside the ny-wool pocket or mesh pocket up top, you sacrifice inner volume by quite a bit. It ends up being a small and awkward space to put real items inside the main compartment like a regular bag. I found this perfect to be an edc bag, although a bit heavy, since it feels quite a bit smaller than 24L once organization pockets are in use. Great review as always!

    DO NOT buy this backpack if you are a photographer and are looking into Errant Pack + CB1 camera cube. I bought the photography kit and ended up returning it. The CB1 does fit into the backpack very well but when it's loaded with camera gear the upper lid with nipples becomes extremely hard to close. I've seen other users complaining this on Instagram.
    Even the compartments in the bag itself are poorly designed. Almost all the pockets fight with each other for space. This is my opinion.

    Dude yall are awesome! I love the set up on the back wall, I've had ideas of opening a store with a similar set up.
    I own a Prima Xpac from boundary and just took it on week long business trip with some field work. I ended up not using it much and will probably go back to my swiss gear as it had much better organizational pockets and sleeves. Your review highlighted that it seems the Errant might have been the better buy but still not perfect for my needs (travel, tech).
    Some features boundary introduces are game changers such as the organizational tablet sleeve and little things like the key ring that will keep me tuned in for their future products. I love the company and design so I'm glad I was able to pick up a prima xpac, but I likely won't use it. I think Nomatic, Black Ember, and Arkiv have better "single travel bag" options. I plan on picking up the nomatic 40L next.. the right pack is out there so I'll just keep buying till I get the right combo.
    I really like the review and I think yall will help me in my search so I subbed (I never sub!) and I'll follow you guys on insta. Keep up the great work!

    Great bag. A tip for the round clips is that when you insert them, you don't need to follow the rails. Just push them into the circular indents and the internal mechanism will snap. You only needs to follow the rails if you want to unclip them. I also find that the pack doesn't need to be zipped at the top in everyday use. The clip will hold the flap down pretty well.

    • @PackHacker
      @PackHacker  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks DarkFireBlade25 - we generally found the magnets on the flap a bit hard to use when unzipped, but pushing them directly in makes sense!

    It seems like as if a lot of the Kickstarter backers never backed any products before. They expect everything to arrive on time and be perfect. But, that is exactly why this bag was on Kickstarter and not direct to retail. I have waited 2.5 years for a wallet before.
    At the price point of the bag, it is quite hard to criticize. The "next bag up" would be the PD 30L, which is more than double of what this bag costs. While everyone is criticising the bad conduct of the laptop compartment (was communicated to fit 17", but barely fits all 15". But then again, this young and hip company didn't expect people to turn up with their 4-year-old giant laptops, instead of just using a Macbook), no one them commented on how BS re-iterated the back panel, tried to fix the magnetic clips and experimented with different fabrics.
    I wouldn't be surprised to see an updated version down the road.
    The personal insults and how it seemed as if their life depended on the 150-200 bucks made the backers in the Kickstarter comment section look extremely childish. [im not affiliated in any way. I pre-ordered 4 months ago directly from the website and am still waiting. meanwhile i just go on with my life.]. Also cool review Tom. Keep them coming. Ok, coffee break is over.

      It's not about the delays that is getting people riled up but the company's way on handling their business. Let's talk about Boundary's Smooth Sailing Guarantee. They kept pulling countries out of the Smooth sailing guarantee without informing backers. Is that an appropriate conduct to you that a company does this to thousands of people? And the fact is all of them gave and is still giving contradicting information and some times down right lied to us and not coming clean and really communicate to us of what's happened but instead Boundary blamed their partners for pretty much about everything. They would have been forgiven for a lot of issues if Boundary would have been really transparent to customers.
      There's loads more stuff and everything boils down to this: if you start acting like major player and go over-promising stuff then expect us to hold you to it.
      Boundary had the chance to limit the pledges but Boundary did the exact opposite for greed basically. And the amount the accessories that they've put out was too much for a small company. Boundary crammed 2 projects into 1 and in turn completely overextended themselves. They are very good designers and the products itself are good but the approach to the business side is not realistic. Which is actually very important when the CEO has to know there their strength lies in and what areas needs to be improved. But from their actions they don't have a clue. The amount of accessories Boundary has is staggering when main point should in the pack.
      Boundary is arrogant, disrespectful towards customers and CS and their logistics simply sucks. It's not cool that they started prioritizing website orders than actually fulfilling KS & Indiegogo backers and now they're out of stock! They are a young company and we will forgive them to a certain extend but a lot of the issues that have been raised have been self-inflicted and because of incompetency they didn't do the proper leg work. And these are not first time mistakes. It's pretty much a repeat from their first project. Boundary is not thinking ahead for the longetivity for their business relationships nor getting people as repeat customers because all of the stunts they pulled.

      @@xfani Now you have to understand that manufacturing is a nightmare process. If only 1 of the 50 contractors you are working with has a delay, then you entire products will be delayed. They most likely source materials from different parts of the world since nobody makes everything they put in the back. Just think about it. You got different zippers, different zipper keys, a lot of different fidlocks, magnets, metal snaps, velcro, webbings, metal hooks, plastic buckles, foam, elastic straps, more than 3 types of canvas,, pvc for certain items, mesh webbing, hell even the damn needles and threads are outsourced. Now imagine that the company that you have contracted to make and deliver the velcro has a fire at their warehouse. Or a hurricane on the other side of the world delays the shipment of webbing for 3 weeks because the ship that carried them was landlocked. And this is only manufacturing. Now take into account labour, transportation, packaging, shipment, customs formalities and every other thing that could possibly go wrong. Even Apple couldn't fulfil iPhone orders a few years ago due to manufacturer issues. Do you know how many screw types Apple uses in their laptops? If only one of them has a delay because some chinese procurement manager got sick or his wife left him and forgot to file the paper, then the whole laptop line-up will have a delay.
      TL;DR - in manufacturing, 99% of the time is the partner's/contractor's fault.

    • @xfani
      @xfani 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@weplaywax I do understand it and again it's every company's job to be prepared for delays and then more delays. It should be in their action plans and have contingency plans for every thinkable scenario. But we all know something unexpected will always come up and instead hiding behind curtains every respectable company would let their pledgers/customers know what's happening. Transparency is the key here. Instead of blaming your partners the first thing management should ask themselves how this happened and why weren't prepared to this? Going through internal processes and thinking ahead is part of every business and there's no going around it. One should always know major bottlenecks in every step from design, manufacturing and to logistics.
      Boundary's issue is that they've put themselves in a tight schedule with too many items to produce in pretty much in every colorway and at the same time dealing with different fabrics (Kodra/X-Pac). And did not take into account for any of the bottlenecks that should have been known since their last project. They missed their deadlines and time slots especially in the logistics. So Boundary wasn't in a priority customer to begin with so I'd think some of the delays was because of it.
      Were you a KS backer? There's loads information that most people don't even know about and a lot the delays were as I said before self-inflicted.

    I was an early backer of this Kickstarter project and purchased the Slate Blue version with the Aux compartment to add more storage options. Please note that the Aux only hooks onto the front of the Errant (two hooks on top) and is tied down on the bottom just like the sternum strap tab. It has come undone a couple of times with just regular movement alone so I would make sure you secure it with some kind of non-permanent method but it makes it a pain to remove it quickly to slim down the pack. I've since removed the Aux compartment since it makes it really bulky when you are moving around a crowded area.
    The sternum strap has come undone and I've just secured it with a non-residue stretch tape to the hypalon material, not pretty but it keeps it from getting lost.
    The materials are top notch and it feels very comfortable to wear. Just know that the bag doesn't really "expand" and most items you put in there really use up a lot of room if you are not careful in organizing every little thing. The top flap with the two fidlock magnets are a joy to use, when I get them to lock which only about 10% of the time. I was really upset that the company didn't meet the projected delivery time of October 2018 and received my pack at the end of last month (Jan 2019). But since I knew this was a KStarter from the get-go and got it at the early bird pricing, that seemed to lessen the delay pains. Boundary Supply's Errant pack is a step in the right direction but like others have stated, this would have been the perfect pack if they corrected the issues of:
    1. Expandability (not much room once you pack in a laptop, camera, water bottle, etc.)
    2. Quality Control that some people have gotten. (I did not have any issues of mis-alilgnments of straps, etc.)
    3. Top Flap magnet closure - just not as simple as it looks (Check out Chase Reeves' video on how difficult it was for him to close the flap)
    4. Thicker grab handles on the top and sides of the bag.
    Those are just a few of my gripes since using this bag everyday since I received it and I really do like the quality and storage options but just know that you will have to make some compromises if you do decide to give this bag a try. Hope this helps anyone out there thinking about buying it.

    Love the look of the bag in tan, and many of the features, however I'm buying for a tertiary student so top-access is paramount. Would the semi-circular pocket be big enough to house over-ear headphones, and does it block access to the main compartment when you use the top access? Can it be opened if using top access?

  • @Urevix
    @Urevix 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    A reliable review. I've been using the Errant for more than 5 months now and can confirm most of the points. The top access is really slow, and the sternum straps can be lost if they are not properly attached, which is not the case in the video. The convex side of the metal part needs to face inward, still it may happen that it changes position and you don't notice it and then the thing may fall out. It's sometimes a tad awkward to close the upper lid using the magnetic buttons only, but it works fine most of the time with some practice. The quality of materials is really great and it's the best edc pack I've ever used.

    If you don't use the camera insert, the velcro sleeve on the lid is a great place to store the hip belt and the sternum strap when not using. I put it in a small, flat bag so nothing slips out.
    Also, there is a small DIY community on the Boundary Errant Backers Facebook page who are using Fidlock magnets to build their own snap-in accessories, key fobs, and other attachments.

    I was pretty disappointed when I received mine. The Errant demos well with all the features, but the low price point is ap-errant (har har har) when you actually get your hands on the bag. Seems like they dumped all their budget into features that are pretty hit or miss, and had to cut some corners when it comes to the core functionality of the bag. For example, the absurdly stiff Jansport-style straps. They'll break in over time, but I'm not exactly excited about deterioration as a feature. Day to day use of the bag also frustrated me due to how annoying it was getting in and out of the main pockets, everything is very rigid (zippers, liners around the ridge of the openings, etc) and there's not much stretch to the main compartment to accept large or oddly sized items.
    It's sad in a way, because there's some solid ideas in there buried below the extra features. The vertical commuter pocket is very handy, the key clips is a welcome feature, and the side handle is a welcome addition. These guys have good ideas, but they clearly optimized for the Kickstarter campaign/feature-list-appeal rather than the delivery & day to day use of the bag.

      In fact, they have great ideas. But I don't believe in the product anymore. Too often already the date has been postponed about availability. That reminds me of "Arsenal Smart Camera Assitant". I had ordered it and waited over a year for it :-( And then it didn't work as expected. Marketing you can all really great... but then? I think the Compagnon Explorer + is now very good. And maybe even Shimoda Back Pack 40L

  • @Dithnir99
    @Dithnir99 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Reading a lot on YT about the pockets eating into space if they're used. I thought that would be expected insofar as they're simply options to configure the space you have. I get that some bags can 'distort', but presumably that's what the AUX and the 6L extensions are for. Anyway, my question is whether the Peak Designs Everyday has the same issue of its organisation options eating into the space rather than expanding. I heard the AEL222 recommended elsewhere, have you reviewed that?

    I really regret exchanging my Slate Blue for the Obsidian Black color. Blue looks best imo.

    • @PackHacker
      @PackHacker  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey jmgajitos - agree with you that the blue version is slick! (at least online, we haven't been able to see it in person).
      Boundary has 24L listed on their site. There are methods to testing exact liter space but we do not have the equipment yet. As for the expandability - agreed - the toploader doesn't expand compared to something like the Peak Design Mag Latch on the Everyday Backpacks.

      I feel like it really depends what you pack. The pocketing system of the Errant shares the space with multiple pockets. For example if you use the PK2 accessory, most people will start saying that the water bottle pocket on the outside is now useless as most use traditional round water bottles. I combatted this by using a flat water bottle from Memobottle which works just fine.

    I don't think the velcro pocket is meant for anything but the strap that is attached right next to it.

      @PackHacker  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Russell - thanks - it's quite a large pocket for that small of a strap but it does do a good job at storing it and makes sense!

      Hey Vincent! We were sure to add the 15" laptop compartment size to the stats on our full written review here. Bummer there was a swap in this during production: packhacker.com/travel-gear/boundary-supply/the-errant-pack/

      Also, if you look at pictures and videos of some 15" laptops that fit, the laptop corners are putting constant tension on the zipper. They really needed to give more clearance in that area

    Hi, thanks for the review. Lots of good points in there.
    After a few weeks in 2023 of owning the Errant Pack and several accessories, My comments are below. I am a bit dismayed that the review doesnt address the overall quality of parts of the pack, specifically the hypalon back, the laser cut hypalon portion on the straps, as well as the durability of the accessories. Those would be useful to know, not just how the bag looks at first glance.
    - The quality of the construction is GARBAGE. The laser cuts on the straps unravel, the hypalon on the back panel and on the Aux compartment crack and peel, despite zero abuse. The zipper pulls start to disintegrate very fast.
    - The straps are very rigid and for me uncomfortable. They seem to work for some people, perhaps due to body type.
    - The look is very nice, and I enjoy the utility. Sadly the bag deteriorates so fast that it mars the overall look.

    There’s a massive luggage pass through on the back - turn the bag 90 degrees and slide the luggage handle behind the padding.

    • @PackHacker
      @PackHacker  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tim - although it looks that way, there is not. The two openings you're seeing are pockets and not a pass-through.

      @@PackHacker very frustrating. I actually usually use 17-18" laptops for work. And after backing this bag. I downsized my laptop for a 15.6 so it would fit this bag. And yet even a 15.6 wont even fit.

    After 1 year usage it's a great backbag with some flaws imho:
    1) The small straps to open the backbag on various clasps started to fall off and break after just a few month.
    2) Most disappointing thing are the accessories like the aux compartment, which is just faulty design and doesn't hold properly at the top, since the wrong mounts were used. It makes it useless for everyone, since you can't trust it will hold while you hike or have so run a bit faster. So I don't recommend anyone to buy it, since it's also very pricy and not well thought through.

    The Errant is an over-engineerd pack in my opinion. Never buying anything from them anymore with all of the BS they've been pulling. Arrogant, dismissive attitude towards customers is not cool.

      I can relate to that. Especially about their attitude. Just watch Cavin and Brandon, the 2 guys behind Boundary. In all their videos they have a very aggressive look and tone, I feel like they would punch me in the face if I didn't buy their product. I've been in touch with their Customer Service and the feeling is the same. They have been helpful though, but not the friendliest bunch.
