You are the man!! Thank you for doing this. You are one of the few channels I see with actual objective data, which is much needed in the music scene. Please keep up the good work!
Hugely appreciative of your tireless efforts to give us the facts on all kinds of devices! That said, I personally have no interest in using NAM captures on my Pocket Master (of which I bought first one, and then a 2nd one because I love it so much and wish to have one for my electric as well as one for my acoustic, in the latter case for loading acoustic IRs and having a few effects in various presets, for various cover songs). I‘d rather just use the stock amps on board the Pocket Master, rather than forcing the (cheap) converters to do the heavy lifting of converting NAM captures, with obvious tonal losses involved. I don‘t really understand why anyone would prefer to use NAM captures on such a device, rather than just choosing to use the on-board sounds or else use a ToneX with (high-quality) captures, or any other modeler for that matter. I figure NAM captures - being great-sounding when played back with great gear - lose their attractiveness and accuracy when played back on cheap gear, so what‘s the point of choosing NAM over something else? If accuracy is what we want, we should go with the gear that can deliver that. For me, good sound is sufficient, and my audiences agree. Nobody cares about accuracy, so forget NAM. I also have ToneX and ToneX One, but will instead be using two Pocket Masters for my solo performances, and they will be quite good enough. As for the Valeton G-5 soon to come, it will also handle NAM captures, but probably also with conversion and cheap converters, so I wouldn‘t expect it to deliver (much) better results than the Pocket Master, and maybe Sonicake will even improve on the NAM performance a bit in future firmware. But as far as I‘m concerned, the PM is perfect as-is, at its fantastic price point and give its full feature set. With a bit of care, I will even be able to switch presets from song to song using my feet, while also doing away with a dedicated tuner and some other pedals. Great times!
Leo, you really knocked it out of the park with this one. I think all modelers should include the capacity to load NAM profiles. Or let’s put it this way: going forward, brands that do not include this capacity are going to find diminishing market share. Anyway, thanks again, Leo. I really admire all that you do for the community. Grazie!
Great video as always! I'm all for NAM profiles in multi-fx units as there is already an incredible library of sounds. NAM allowed me to understand what I like when it comes to amps so I hope it will do the same for someone who is starting out.
Thanks for the shout-out! I hope these 44.1khz devices are able to correct the math of the sample conversion and that might help improve the sound of the amp model overall. Cheers!
Thank you very much for your video, dear Leo.😉 I think the positives far outweigh the cons in this Sonicake device. And my conclusion to what you say in your final section in the video is clear: in less than 3-5 years, all multi-effects/amp-emus pedalboards will incorporate their own .NAM file loader, either pure loading or converting the files to their specific version. 👍
Great analysis as always Leo! I may have to pick one of these up just to mess around with loading the NAM profiles and as a super convenient practice tool. My Matribox II I use as a practice tool at home and really love the way it sounds. Hard to argue with $64.99 US for something like this. God bless and rock on 👍😎🎸
Incredible review! This thing is a no brainer for the price, I was surprised how good it sounds, and you can get into the eq section of each preset and turn down the 4k or 6k frequencies to get rid of that weird high end sizzle you usually get with these types of units. Sonicake is offering a heck of a bargain here so get one quickly because I'm sure these will be $20-$30 more soon.

Many thanks for your tests and results. I was expecting some discrepancy by what I was hearing from other videos sound comparisons, I hope you are right about the EQ Shift, cause that would be an easy fix for Sonicake. It's also a great thing that more companies are adhering to NAM profiles, hope it becomes pretty standard soon. Cause I was having some impressive real time results using these, and it makes me think it would be a great advance for DSPs to include something like that Keep up the good work, thanks again!
@LeoGibsonGtr Spectral denoise is an adaptive filtering technique to filter uncorrelated signal. You can train it with a noise spectrum and have that noise removed from your signal. Makes your guitar so quiet that you dont even need noise gate anymore, and the tone is almost the same. I really love it.
@ I've used Berton, and it's pretty simple, and works okay-ish. But it is nothing compared to adaptive denoisers, which will listen to a noise profile and filter it. Believe me, they are different technologies and the results are much better.
@@pqpguilhermepqp We all have our favorites. Its great to have so many choices. Bertom is a multiband gate, essentially. Its great for live performance. RX works great but it adds too much latency to be used live. It also takes a lot of CPU compared to Bertom. It also costs money and requires you to port a license to the machine. C-Vox is better at denoising than C-Axe, in my opinion. But those are both very expensive and require owning an Apollo. I own all of the devices you mentioned and while they are all useful tools for the right job, I still use Betrom every time I want to play live or record. No license, no nonsense and if you use it correctly (I have a video on my channel showing how I use it) it works perfectly. But as I say, we all have our favorites!
@@milankotevski1663 What you should understand. I am looking for a replacement for Tone X One since Ik will not unlock USB MIDI. I dont want the big pedal I want a modular solution. The SPM is more than enough to take the place of that TX1. It has two switches to switch out presets in any direction on the fly. it as way better FX, the stock stuff in this thing is excellent and is par with way more expensive modellers. The NAM part? use the damb EQ its why its there. The NAM captures sound great as they are. No it dont sound like the plug in nor the 700 dollar pedal. It dont have too its 65 bucks it only has to sound good and it does deliver that. If you dont think so you are either ignorant or dont actually even have one a basing things on youtube videos.
Many tx. Top video - as always. ...maybe as a side note: If you don't just compare it with the NAM Player but also with the other "big names" in the profiling world you have (according to your videos) the Kemper Player at 30.9 vs this one at 27.3 also with a price difference of 600 vs 60 ! - yes 3dB is still a lot but 10x the price ! wow !!!also: any chance you can compare this vs the other profiling "cheapoes" - MVave G-Tank and MVave Blackbox ? To my ear this one sounds better (and is definitely easier to use with just dragging over the NAM profiles) but a scientific view on it would be nice ;-)
Hi Leo, thanks for the awesome video as usual, I would like to know how easy is to load the nam profiles on the unit and how many of them could be loaded. Thanks!
Hi, your are welcome and I'm happy that you appreciate the video! The procedure is explained in the video just after the intro, and you can also see how many slots are available.
I would love to see a chinese $150-200 NAM/IR loader with hyper accuracy NAM captures player capacity the Dimehead has very powerful computing specs to design to handle Nam, and still has the limitation of running hyper accuracy captures (even computers sometimes have trouble with those), but if it was stripped down to only nam/ir player features, then it could probably make it for an even better price than the standard NAM player
I hope to see something like this as well. Forget about developing all kinds of FX and extra stuff. I am not sure if that would bring down cost OR allow the onboard CPU to focus more on NAM captures but I think thats the intention of skipping all the extra stuff I would literally never ever use. All I really need is a mono NAM, then split to a pair of stereo signals that run each into their own EQ > NAM > EQ > IR and then stereo outputs. Just a "dry" amp chain that can be used for splitting to your own amp+cab and front of house mixer. But then of course there are the nice-to-have extras like a good Gate and Pitch Shifter. Now were kinda back to square one. And people will say "what about reverb/ delay/ flanger/ phaser/ etc/etc/etc). Maybe if there was a system that knows how to allocate resources and would say "you can only load 1 NAM because youre currently using up CPU for this, this, and this" and if you disable all that stuff, it will then allow you to load 2 NAMs. But of course, now were talking more expensive systems. Ill just give it a couple years and see what cool stuff comes out :) Sorry for the rant. Im right there with you on the bare-bones but high power device idea.
Great video as always, thank you for all your hard work. Could you make a comparison chart in terms of DSP for some of these more popular modelers? I mean actual processor and RAM figures, like for computers. I have looked for something like this everywhere and did not find it.
Thank you so much, I'm really happy that you appreciate the video!!! Actually this is an info not available for all the modellers / profilers...some let us know...some other does not...anyway it would for sure be interesting....
Grazie mille come sempre.
Ciao Niccolò! Grazie e sono contento che hai trovato il video preciso! SI, corretto, o NAM profile, oppure AMP + CAB...probabilmente c'è un limite del DSP....che non riesce a processare NAM + CAB! Grazie!
It's nice to be able to have nam captures on the go. And you can't argue with 60 bucks. I can't wait until there is a device that doesn't convert the nam profiles and it is super affordable. Nam player for me right now isn't affordable.
Could you add a couple minutes to show the software? because it have been a very important mark for me to choose a multi effect. If it had the software of the ampero mini it would be a blast.
I think that converting the IR ^s the 48 khz to 44-1 with a mid ditter may correct that before importing ... But I have not tried that yrt because I havent any :) I only recently bought the Sonicake Pro 2 multi. and that one is also 44.1 only and thought on that also when i sav it.... thanks for the video. (sorry for my typos) I forgot my glasses 😅
this is a good question...but I don't know... I guess they are trying with low budget devices to then bring the functionality to the other devices...it seems logical...but it is just my speculation!
This firmware version was also rushed I think ;as it was a back up plan after the actual product launch. So I think this is still very Beta yet. There is supposed be a new version coming soon. This version was to just get it working
A couple weeks ago a firmware update with poorly optimized NAM compatibility was released then rolled back within a few days. The current firmware is a stable build.
Leo, I bought 3 units for me and two friends... and all of them suffer from strange crackling noises when turning the volume pot in in any guitar. Can you chek if your unit does the same thing? Thanks in advance!
@@LeoGibsonGtr At least it does not happen when using wireless instead of guitar cable at the cost of added latency...but I am not so sensitive to latency. Thanks for your feedback!
It sounds like the way its running the NAM profile is at half-rate? To me it sounds down-sampled and obviously lower quality. For the price it's an interesting feature, but, the sound-quality isn't really there. However, I do agree that all manufacturers need to implement NAM support. This is a requested feature for the next Amperium, which is currently being discussed.
Yes, I do agree about NAM implementation in the modellers / profilers. I would not say half rate...but of course from 48 kHz the pocket master needs to downsample to 44.1
I would be a little surprised to see other manufacturers adding the ability to load NAM profiles. They want to lock you into their ecosystem, creating profiles/models/captures using their gear.
even without the null test there there is a significant difference in the sound quality and the similarity to the real amp.never the less, thats a nice toy.
Few years back I had a "flyrig" type of pedal from sonicake. Worst soundig gear I have ever tried! It had a "coated" sound on the highs and high mids, almost like if it had an IR on top of speaker out, but it hadn't! Sold it within a week after purchase.
nam will win always, and if its running hyper accuracy captures there would be no match, and it wouldn't even be a fair comparison, since nam will be using a pc computing capabilities
They are of course also for low gain/clean stuff but usually getting overdriven sounds right is "harder" and needs more epochs/calculation so showing OD sounds gives you kind of a "worst case" situation and usually hints to an even better rusult with cleaner sounds
Nam profiles with cheap electronics and AD/DA converters do NOT mix well. You need high quality parts and audio component to properly bring 1s and 0s to life! I think this device falls pretty short!
pocket dealio sounds muffled compared to the real. the expensive player doesn't sound much better on the high end. can we go back to using real amps lol
I know how you can feel this way naturally but this is exactly what the maker of NAM intended to happen. He says it is cool and its what he wants. He wanted to make it possible for companies to make money with his system.

The EQ shift category is very interesting
Yes, I do agree....that's not my merit...kudos to Jason
For what it is, it kicks ass. Im done with my TX1 this is more than enough to replace it and MIDI is supposed to come in the next update.
Matt Ryder is that you!? Lol
This is a crappy device. One would have to be either CEO of the company, or crazy to hype it as much as you do.
Thank you for sharing your findings
@ Its 65 dollars!! There are modellers that cost 200 that can't do half of what this can do.
You are welcome!
I still don't have the MVave...maybe in the future!
Thank you for sharing!
Great review, as always!, if it changes the tone of the NAM capture for me is a no, not worth it. Thanks!
Thank you for sharing and I'm happy that you appreciate the video!
wow nice little thing!
yes, thanks!
You are A Mazing!
😀 Thank you soooo much!!!
Same what the Mod Dwarf did, they use smaller size NAM captures.. don't know how they compare though. Thank you Leo ❤
You are welcome!
I wish Boss would add that to my GT-1000...i.e. NAM profile support. It would breathe new life into that unit.
Yes, it would be really nice!
thanks Leo
You are welcome!
Mine arrives in a few days, i can't wait to try it on a monosynth
Thank you for sharing!
like Leo's reviews... a lot of!
Thank you so much, I'm really happy that you like the videos!!!
I would love to see a chinese $150-200 NAM/IR loader with hyper accuracy NAM captures player capacity
the Dimehead has very powerful computing specs to design to handle Nam, and still has the limitation of running hyper accuracy captures (even computers sometimes have trouble with those), but if it was stripped down to only nam/ir player features, then it could probably make it for an even better price than the standard NAM player
Thank you for sharing!
Have you seen the Valeton GP-5 Multi-FX Amp and IR loader mini pedal??? $99.00 USD it does NAM too.😇
Hi, yes, I have noticed it....let's hope that Valeton sends me unit to check it out!
Thanks!
Grazie!
@@LeoGibsonGtr perfetto. Grazie ancora .
Prego!
It's nice to be able to have nam captures on the go. And you can't argue with 60 bucks. I can't wait until there is a device that doesn't convert the nam profiles and it is super affordable. Nam player for me right now isn't affordable.
Thank you for sharing!
Could you add a couple minutes to show the software? because it have been a very important mark for me to choose a multi effect.
If it had the software of the ampero mini it would be a blast.
Hi Leo! could you make a test to the M-Vave Tank Mini, please?
Hi, I don't have the M-Vave....maybe in the future.
Thank you!
You are welcome and thank you for sharing!
will the sonicake pocket master work with m-vave chocolate? If it does could you post a video on how to set it up please leo, thank you bro.
The tech available today is amazing. Thank you for the review.
You are welcome and yes...I do agree!
SPM has more warm sound so in my opinion the winner here is SPM
Thank you for sharing your findings!
Leo will SoniCake have a Update for the Matribox II so you could load in NAM Profiles?
this is a good question...but I don't know...
I guess they are trying with low budget devices to then bring the functionality to the other devices...it seems logical...but it is just my speculation!
Next test the Valeton VP5 ....also loads NAM profiles
Thank you for sharing!
what exactly does it mean note envelope? do you explain it in another video?
Hi, the “envelope” of a particular sound is defined by four qualities: attack, decay, sustain, and release
Thanks
I just wish they will add a midi support for the next firmware
It would be nice indeed!
There's another NAM profile loader, it's Valeton GP-5, that looks like ToneX One.
Thank you for sharing!
I am waiting the new valeton GP 5 that can play NAM profile.
Thank you for sharing! I hope Valeton could send me a copy...so we can check it out!
I'm waiting for the day we can use Tonex or Quad Cortex files on a "Universal amp capture" reader/modeler.
Nao está longe de acontecer.
Thank you for sharing!
@Leo Gibson: Is it true that only full gear captures can be used? That means when you load a NAM-file you cannot use IRs? Cheers and thx!
Hi, yes, so far if you use the profile / capture...the IR block is disabled
This firmware version was also rushed I think ;as it was a back up plan after the actual product launch. So I think this is still very Beta yet. There is supposed be a new version coming soon. This version was to just get it working
Thank you for sharing
A couple weeks ago a firmware update with poorly optimized NAM compatibility was released then rolled back within a few days. The current firmware is a stable build.
Leo, I bought 3 units for me and two friends... and all of them suffer from strange crackling noises when turning the volume pot in in any guitar. Can you chek if your unit does the same thing? Thanks in advance!
Hi Carlos, mine is not affected...maybe you should ask to Sonicake.
Thank you and I'm sorry for your problems.
@@LeoGibsonGtr At least it does not happen when using wireless instead of guitar cable at the cost of added latency...but I am not so sensitive to latency. Thanks for your feedback!
you are welcome!
Bro still waiting for the ge 1000 comoparison or the gs 1000
Hi, the GS 1000 is not yet in my studio....unfortunatelly...
THanks
Hi, good point...
even without the null test there there is a significant difference in the sound quality and the similarity to the real amp.never the less, thats a nice toy.
Thank you for sharing!
Few years back I had a "flyrig" type of pedal from sonicake. Worst soundig gear I have ever tried! It had a "coated" sound on the highs and high mids, almost like if it had an IR on top of speaker out, but it hadn't! Sold it within a week after purchase.
Thank you for sharing your experience!
I think in new firmwares it will be better and they will do resample 44.1kHz to 48kHz before nam back to 44.1kHz and after it
Thank you for sharing!
M-vave black box vs nam vst plugin vs sonicake.
Thank you for your suggestion!
I need a second life to do all these videos...
nam will win always, and if its running hyper accuracy captures there would be no match, and it wouldn't even be a fair comparison, since nam will be using a pc computing capabilities
Are these NAM profiles only any use for dirt sounds. I’m sick to death of hearing dirt sound comparisons
They are of course also for low gain/clean stuff but usually getting overdriven sounds right is "harder" and needs more epochs/calculation so showing OD sounds gives you kind of a "worst case" situation and usually hints to an even better rusult with cleaner sounds
Imagine this unit with XLR balanced out (FOH) + AMP out (amp return) + 2 footswitches! Similar size to a boss pedal! Aí aí aí!
👍
HX Stomp 2 with more DSP and ability to run NAM = Profit
yes
LOL, 5ms. 😂
They are incredible. I was expecting 10+.
RIP multiFX companies. If not now, soon.
Users can create 44.1kHz nam models. Then they will sound wright i think
Thank you for sharing!
Nam profiles with cheap electronics and AD/DA converters do NOT mix well. You need high quality parts and audio component to properly bring 1s and 0s to life! I think this device falls pretty short!
Thank you for sharing
pocket dealio sounds muffled compared to the real. the expensive player doesn't sound much better on the high end. can we go back to using real amps lol
nam is free yet sonicake makes money out of it, not cool at all !
I know how you can feel this way naturally but this is exactly what the maker of NAM intended to happen. He says it is cool and its what he wants. He wanted to make it possible for companies to make money with his system.
