Crate training is sooooo important. My dogs learn to love their crate ("kennel") as a place they can have some peace.

I’m getting my first puppy in a couple months and your videos have been so helpful in making me feel more educated and confident I can raise a good dog! Thank you 🙏🏼

I’m raising a dog that’s 4 months old right now, I watched this 5 times yesterday and twice today , he’s half kelpie, half Great Pyrenees , I’ve been working with him since he was 8 weeks, I watched a lot of bull$@?! Videos before stumbling onto your stuff. I had been struggling with getting him to go in his crate, I did exactly what you said, I told him “crate”once with a lure last night, he went in! I did it 2 other time throughout the day. And like 15 minutes ago told him “crate” and I’ll be damn if he didn’t run in, the door was closed, he pawed the thing open. I couldn’t F_ing believe it. I didn’t have treats on me so I marked it and went to get a treat and he was chillin door open waiting for me. I feel so stupid thinking about how I would carry a big ass puppy to the crate, I’ve always had little dogs easy to handle or excuse type of dogs and I thought I knew a thing or two, I know now that I don’t know anything, I’ve now binge watched I don’t know how many hours of your humbling content and not once have I watched something and not learned something , thanks for what you do. Seriously.

Right - and something else that's important > pay close attention to what Larry is actually doing, not just what he's saying. As an example, if you view the video with a german shepherd with anxiety, the dog is fixated on where she last saw her owner and keeps trying to go there. Larry lets her take a dash toward there and get stopped at the end of the leash, and she returns with some leash suggestion, guidance, only to make another dash and so on over and over. She's slightly less anxious...then Larry is giving her playful pushes on her side. Those pushes changed the dog. I am training a fearful adult dog and BINGO, that worked ..when my dog reached the end of leash, after about 5 tries to go back inside, I noticed his tail wagging on the returns and tail tucked in fear position on the runaways..AHA! So I gave some pushes..dog relaxed...then dog sniffed at a ball he saw on the ground..I kicked the ball and dog chased it..first time interest in a ball...now he is retrieving the ball from a good throw if I try it when he's in a good mind frame.
So pay attention to what Larry is doing physically as well as what he's talking about.

Amazing video i have a french bulldog and as it was our first puppy we did everything wrong… now he’s 9 months old and because of us he can’t walk normally on a leash, pulls does not obey and so on… i called some trainers but lost hope last one told me over the phone “i’ll have to punch him a few times, with the right pressure”… ffs. I will try the exercises in your videos. Thanks

Oh so true, as the owner of a 6 month old rescue, ( who is almost 5 now) breaking those bad habits they came with is sooo difficult. My other experience was with puppies - what a difference! I do love your advice of locking them out of kennel with food inside - wish I heard this when I adopted rescue GSD. Thank you for your videos!

The recall part is so true. We've got 2.5 acres and he's never been tied, I would walk him off leash at 2 or 3 months (rural) , he still doesn't need it the only time he's been put on leash is to teach him he should be a certain way when on it and to show boundries

So yes I agree with everything you’re doing with puppies what if you adopt a dog and he’s already either a year or two years or older , can you apply the same principles exactly or is it going to be different?

I just got a puppy and successfully did some of these things you mention. I struggle with the crate, though. I don't know how to get from the pup wanting into the crate (food trick) to actually being able to shut the door and walk away without her screaming. Great video! I learned so much from watching you!

Teaching recall.. I've been working with the new dog in my back. Using some of your techniques. Plus, using techniques I've learned from others.
Making it a fun experience works wonders.
I don't always use voice or noise commands. Sometimes just using a visual command works too.
    Imprinting right from the start.

My new dog is a 1year old female Rott. 3 weeks ago I found her at the Humane Society. She's been responding very very well to the work I've been doing with her.
I went through a trial and error period with my 4 other dogs. She's benefiting from everything I've learned.

@@nickf6794 Thanks again.. been doing this for a bit.
      Calm
      Consistent
      Rules
      Boundaries
      Limitations
      Exercise
Biggest key is that you have to be the pack leader.. which the pack leader has to be balanced. Dogs will know if you are weak.
Something I believe is that if you wouldn't let your kids be ill behaved, then why let your dogs be ill behaved. I see so many people that don't have "control" of there dog/s.
Every dog.. regardless of breed is a good dog.. it's the human that tends to be the problem.
The right nutrition can help a lot with certain health issues. One of the biggest things that I adopted for my dogs has been the B.A.R.F. diet that was developed by Dr. Ian Billinghurst. I started with this back in 2018. Best decision I ever made.
Agreed.. Every member of the family has to be on board. But, a person can only control what they can. My Wife isn't a dog person. She's a cat person. But, she loves the dogs that we have. I'm the primary caretaker of all our animals.. all 5 dogs and 2 cats. All get along just fine. Even the new Rott gets along with the cats.
For me.. there's always something new to learn.. so I appreciate the advice.

@@nickf6794 Something else I've had experience with is taking my dogs to a dog park. I stopped doing that because I got tired of policing other peoples' dogs. Mine were fine. It was the other dogs that were the troublemakers. Then when you get someone that is just as ill behaved as their dog that's when I decide to go elsewhere. It's not worth the headache dealing with ill behaved people.

@@nickf6794 I take bits and pieces of advice from everywhere and adapt it to my own style.
For instance I also follow a channel named 1st508thAirborne. He does pack feeding videos. He also has his style of training that he's developed over the past 30 years. He doesn't promote his way or is in the dog training business. He's just out to share what he's learned throughout the years.

Do they have to be in the crate the first night. It's ok to get food, but the whole night, they are going to be crying and that creates conflict. Am I missing something?

    • @Rohan-go4oo
      @Rohan-go4oo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I totally believe in the use of crates, feeding, sleeping, resting. However, each time I have got a pup, first night I put my bedding, on the kitchen floor, and sleep with the pup. The next night onwards, they are sleeping in the crate. Be aware, 2 months old, they can hold it for 2 hours, then they have to be taken to the toilet. 3 months old, 3 hours, then toilet. My 8 month old, goes to bed, of her own accord in the crate at 8pm, I close the door, then at 6am, I let her out. Never any crying, no fuss.

  • @coppcar

I think we're getting an Amstaff soon. The breeder has three 6 month old females and four 9 week old males. Should I not even consider the females due to their age and lost training time? Those older ones have not received any training. The older ones are $1000 and the young ones are $1700.

    • @sfdf1979
      @sfdf1979 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I would advise getting one of the puppies unless you’re an experienced trainer and know the breed. It’s a very stubborn breed (all terriers are) and a six month old, who is entering puberty, and has no training, will be a handful for someone who has only run of the mill dog experience.

This does not apply to most ancient breeds. I’ve got a Dogue pup that is totally independent. Zero food drive. All toy, but hardly any desire to tug. Just a desire to hoard and chew.
