Honestly the real reason was because he had Covid and couldn’t get back on the show, but because of that he did make his own music and started getting known. Im happy for him.
He is an incredible singer, but he IS very new to it and because of that on live stages he sings a little pitchy actually. But he's getting significantly better at it for each performance, one day, he will be one of the greatest live singers of all time.
Like Lionel Richie said after his audition on Idol, some people don't need to practice, since they have natural talent. Considering the fact that Benson has only been singing for a couple of years, and he's already THIS good, he is definitely a natural! His smartest move was to leave Idol when he did and do it on his own! :)
