Watched this because I'm always hunting for new tunes. Had hope at Insomnium, and your top 2 sealed it. I listened to Orbit Culture's entire discography after I heard about 3 songs of theirs. So that makes 7 albums I have now to check out! Thanks for the list!
White christ was my number 1 song on my Spotify wrapped, the nuckelavee by hellripper was number 2 👌🏻🤘🏻 Sulphur aeon and orbit culture were incredible, managed to get tickets for orbit in Glasgow, buzzing for that. Really liked blackrbraid when it first came out, not an album I've went back to a lot though.
Going on 63 with close to 27-thousand albums, I recently re-discovered Black Metal and even started buying the only Belgian Flemish magazine worth the money (Rock Tribune) to get a bit of a bearing in the labyrinth Metal music is today. Glad I came across your channel to assist me with some guidance. However, may I suggest you add band name in writing on the screen, please? Between the retina challenging font some bands use and your bit of an accent, it can get a wee bit problematic finding out what and/or who yer talking about, especially for folks like me who aren't well-versed in today's vast Black Metal landscape. Cheerio lass. Warm greetings from Belgium.
A great list, Lindsay. I was listening to "Descent" again the other day (among other things, it helped me stay awake at work after a festive lunch!); truly a superb album. Heard most of the Wayfarer album and it's on my wish list for Xmas (also dug into their back catalogue, so thanks for the tip). Liked the Blackbraid and several of the others too; there's a couple I still need to investigate. Thanks again for a great yearful of recommendations. Among other things, next year I'm looking forward to the new Ihsahn album.
2 more recent releases missing from this that ended up coming in at number 1 and number 2 on my list are the just released new album from Panopticon "The Rime of Memory" and at number 2 for me is the final album in a trilogy of albums from the absolutely incredible Shylmagoghnar with "Convergence". Which just tells you how incredible this new Panopticon album is. Because I didn't think it possible that anything could top the Shylmagoghnar record. An absolutely incredible year for metal music, notably on the extreme metal side of things.
I love your descriptions of the albums.Your top choices have given me some new lesser known bands to check out. Here are mine. Honestly, Orbit Culture could be higher for me. I am playing it to death lately My top 5 albums: Insomnium Lovebites Enslaved Vintersea Svalbard The rest: Orbit Culture Nervosa Cannibal Corpse Crypta Code Orange Hellripper Enforced Cattle Decap Mutoid Man Malleus Hanabie
That Wayfarer album is a classic I had it has my number 1 but with so much great albums out this year it was tough deciding which were my favourites!! Keep up the good work great hearing a Scottish voice talking about metal!!
I'm going to listen to that Midnight Sorcery album again before I sleep tonight. They don't fart about with a boring intro at the start of the album. They just come ripping right out of the gate. Looking forward to hearing those solos again. One of my favourite 'going to sleep' albums, ever, is Evoken's Hypnagogia but basically any their albums will do. Followed by Ruins Of Beverast's Thulean Grimoires, which I also have to mention, as well. You will surely have heard those already.
cool list! i must check out Seagrave. Never heard them before. my favorite albums this year were Thy Catafalque, Obituary, Ningen Isu, Blackbraid, Wayfayer, Majesties, Cannibal Corpse, Skalmold, Tribunal, Tygers of Pan Tang, Enslaved, Finsterforst, Guts. Thats about all for this year. Mostly listening to my favorite bands and albums so i get very picky with new stuff, LOL! Cheers!
I just received a lp copy from your number one, "Blackbraid II" and this is just fantastic music, love the indian fibe in the album and stunning artwork as well not many people talk about this release.. to have it as number one is just great ! thanks !

Have really enjoyed your top 40 and the final 10 too. Don't know if you have noticed the mad run of gigs in Glasgow in March. 2 of your top 10 bands playing in the space of a few days - Orbit Culture on the Wednesday and Wayfarer (with Enslaved & Svalbard) on the Saturday. Chuck in Napalm Death on the Thursday, Cattle Decapitation on the Sunday and Judas Priest on the Monday and it's a crazy few days!!!
cool list, I'm in process of eliminating some bands from my top 10, but so far my top 10 : Insomnium, Aara, Cattle Decapitation, Soulless, Sodomisery, Krisgrav, Svalbard, Evoking Winds, Manbryne, Totenmesse.
Some really good picks in your list, here is my top 10 - 1. Katatonia -Sky Void Of Stars 2.Asinhell -Impii Hora 3.Sermon -Of Golden Verse 4.Memoriam -Rise To Power 5.Thy Catafalque -Alfold 6. Thanks to your channel and recommendations, I have bought quite a few albums this year that I, otherwise, wouldn't have known about. Your fear factory vid also helped me buy some brilliant cds by them. So thanks for that, and I'm looking forward to next year now, Merry Christmas!
Great list. Some of the albums you picked will surely end in my top 2023 (Hellripped, Moonlight Sorcery...) And thank for Anima Hereticae, it sounds awesome ! And the cover is wonderful.
I’ve only started listening to album this year so I checked out many older album but not that many that came out this year, however I still have a top 10 ! 1. In Flames - Foregone 2. Beware of the antlers! Great seeing more support and awareness for Orbit Culture, these guys deserve every bit of praise put their way. Tremendous band and lovely people to boot. Just saw them on Wednesday at the Cathouse 🖤
@@theheavymetaljournal it was a great gig, total sweatbox 😅 Although, I had the misfortune of finding out I was too old for the pit now, double sprain to my foot and ankle after I fell in it (well over a youngster).
Some great picks, totally agree with Sulphur Aeon and Moonlight Sorcery. Have to check out Anima Hereticae, missed that one so far. Here is my Top 10 of 2023: 1. …and Oceans - As in Gardens, So in Tombs 2. Sühnopfer - Nous sommes d'hier 3. Sulphur Aeon - Seven Crowns and Seven Seals 4. Bloedmaan - Castle inside the Eclipse 5. Moonlight Sorcery - Horned Lord Of The Thorned Castle 6. Ahab - The Coral Tombs 7. Roadwolf - Midnight Lightning 8. +1476+ - In Exile 9. Wormhole - Almost Human 10. ILDSKÆR - Blod & Jern Honorable mentions: Arkhtinn, Crepititation, Nithing, The Night Eternal, Böotes Void, Ancestral Blood, Deathcode Society
I’m so close to being on board with the moonlight sorcery album but the vocal production and mix really holds it back for too. Too buried and “off in the distance” for me. Maybe I just have to live through the album for a few listens and see if it sinks in. Cause I know I really enjoy the music itself
Marianas Rest - Auer Atlases - Between The Day & I Obituary - The Dying Of Everything Warmen - Here For None Insomnium - Anno 1696 ...And Oceans - As In Gardens So In Tombs Shade Empire - Sunholy Bloodred Hourglass - How's The Heart
I've rearranged this list so many times it's ridiculous. I honestly can't say what my favorite album was this year. it's definitely within these. I guess my tastes were a bit more progressive this year. Cheers! 1. Sermon - On Golden Verse 2. The Hirsch Effekt - Urian 3. Hypno5e - Sheol 4. The Ocean - Holocene 5. Ne Obliviscaris - Exul 6. Insomium - Anno 1696 7. Carnation - Cursed Morality 8. Kallias - First Ascent 9. Lokust - Infidels 10. Voyager - Fearless in Love
I think we shared more in common in our top 10 then anything lol. Some awesome one's in the top 10. Orbit Culture I enjoyed but I couldn't place it this high considering the quality of melodeath this year. I'll post my top 50 below. This could change because I'm still going through albums new and relistens. I have alll albums ranked on Metalstorm, which is almost 300 lol. So I wasn't gonna post all those but honestly, I could recommend so many more than 50. This year has been that good. Great video btw. Anyway, here it is.... 1. Sulphur Aeon - Seven Crowns And Seven Seals 2. Shylmagoghnar - Convergence 3. Sworn - A Journey Told Through Fire 4. Cattle Decapitation - Terrasite 5. Fires In The Distance - Air Not Meant For Us 6. Probably because they acted like morons and played the race card when they were caught abusing staff both verbally and spitting at a festival in Norway - they were pissed and disrespected just about everything and everyone they came in contact with. Then blamed everyone but themselves for the shit show they created. They were great during the gig - but I'll never listen to them again.
Yes the new Orbit Culture album was fantastic I was able to see them live this year when they were on tour with Avatar and Veil Of Maya I was able to meet the band great guys they hung out with the crowd during Avatar's set one album really enjoyed this year was really looking forward to was The Dark Side Of The Moon Metamorphosis the band is made uo of Melissa Bonny ( Ad Infinitum) Morten Lowe Sorensen ( Amaranthe and Melissa Bonny husband) Hans Platz and Jenny Diehl ( Feuerschwanz) 🖤💀🦇💣⚡️🤘
That blackbraid album is so freaking good my third fav metal album of the year. My fav metal album of the year was tarrasite by cattle decapitation when that album came out I became addicted to it couldnt put it down. The new panopticon album is my second fav metal album of the year this is the metal album that hit me the hardest emotionally this year I just didn’t get as addicted to it as I did the cattle album.
You and me both. The last section of Winter's Ghost had brought me near to tears, panopticon's new album as whole effin' beautiful. Before then I binged terrasite till the cows came home. Lots of good shit year \m/
new to the channel, nice picks. wasn't familiar with Anima or Nuclear Winter but they sound great. My list would have more experimental black, folk and doomy hybrids but it would be hard to not include a lot of these albums as they've got strong writing and unique sounds too, already have many enjoyable repeat listens on them.
New subsciber, dig the channel so far. My top metal albums were Cannibal Corpse Nervosa Sadus Go Ahead and Die Memoriam Crypta Overkill Angelus Apatrida Primal Fear KK' Priest

¿Por que tanto egoismo? por q no escribir una lista con los nombres de las bandas , la verdad no entiendo , si no hubiera sido por google no decifraba los nombres, gracias en todo caso buenísimas bandas.
Liked Blackbraid 1 - saw them live and thought they were great - then witnessed the childish race baiting tantrum they had so I'll never listen to them again.
Overall a Fantastic Top 40 list Lindsay! Thanks for your great work! I could not do a list like this, to many great Releases this year! Are you buying all this Albums? My Overall Number 1 and most listen Album of 2023 is the AHAB Album!! Another 10/10 Masterpiece from one of my Alltime Favorite Band's!! 💀🖤💀🖤💀🖤

Excellent, greetings from Chile Lindsay.
Beware of the antlers!
Great seeing more support and awareness for Orbit Culture, these guys deserve every bit of praise put their way. Tremendous band and lovely people to boot.
Just saw them on Wednesday at the Cathouse 🖤
Yeah I was at the Cathouse show too! It was absolutely amazing!! 🤘🏻
@@theheavymetaljournal it was a great gig, total sweatbox 😅
Although, I had the misfortune of finding out I was too old for the pit now, double sprain to my foot and ankle after I fell in it (well over a youngster).
@@theheavymetaljournal just realized you are in the OC group too - you caught the drumstick in a rather unique way.....
@@Jester_head666 hahaha yeah I did! Sometimes not paying attention works out well for you 😂😂😂

I’m so close to being on board with the moonlight sorcery album but the vocal production and mix really holds it back for too. Too buried and “off in the distance” for me. Maybe I just have to live through the album for a few listens and see if it sinks in. Cause I know I really enjoy the music itself
I’m from Colorado and I didn’t know about Wayfarer.

Blackbraid was my number 1 as well! Not sure if it's just me, but it seems like it's not showing up on these lists as much as I thought it would.
I've seen them on only two lists so far. They definitely deserve more love!
Made it to number 6 for me but that's not to take away from how great that album is, there's been a loooot to choose from this year
Probably because they acted like morons and played the race card when they were caught abusing staff both verbally and spitting at a festival in Norway - they were pissed and disrespected just about everything and everyone they came in contact with.
Great video 😊
Nuclear Winter is a song By the band Sodom, Don't know these bands well, But ill check them out
Not sure if ill Like them But ill give them a listen
new to the channel, nice picks. wasn't familiar with Anima or Nuclear Winter but they sound great. My list would have more experimental black, folk and doomy hybrids but it would be hard to not include a lot of these albums as they've got strong writing and unique sounds too, already have many enjoyable repeat listens on them.
New subsciber, dig the channel so far. My top metal albums were
Cannibal Corpse
Nervosa
Sadus
Go Ahead and Die
Memoriam
Crypta
Overkill
Angelus Apatrida
Primal Fear
KK' Priest
I don't think Napalm Records is sending her any promos.
Solid list. Will YT not allow you to play actual clips? Your descriptions are good, but of course, a clip would be helpful.
Thanks for sharing =) A good list overall, we agree quite a lot.

Too bad James McBain uses programmed drums for the album.
