It's amazing how this lyrics mirrored my sentiments, too. I think there are millions of us longing, more than just about anything else, to work towards something concrete & towards ends we actually want.
This song's elegance cannot and should not be overstated. The dissection of how it feels to live in a society where we are constantly being alienated from ourselves until we settle for living a life we know has so much more potential. I'd give up hot showers and indoor plumbing any day of the week if I could work on an Orchard all day outside in the sunlight without any cares. I'd work til I'm sore.
one of the best lines written in a long, long time.... If I know only one thing, it's that everything that I see Of the world outside is so inconceivable often I barely can speak
I like "I was raised up believing I was somehow unique Like a snowflake distinct among snowflakes, unique in each way you can see And now after some thinking, I'd say I'd rather be A functioning cog in some great machinery serving something beyond me" this part the most
@futurereflecti0ns the other singer for the first half of the song (first three minutes) is the drummer, J. Tillman. He does some solo work that's up on youtube, if you liked him. the other singer for the last three minutes or so of the song is the bassist, Christian.
I think its about being the decision to be a working member in the great society machine - and wanting to get your hands in the dirt! just like Paul Proteus!
That's a good point, and on second listening it didn't bother me as much. That said, they sure drag when the band first joins Pecknold about a half minute in, but I guess he starts it off a little too fast anyways.
Band were NOT tight on this song. Starts off fine, then Pecknold plays a bum chord, semitone too high. As each new instrument enters, they're all fighting each other for the tempo... too fast... too slow... and Pecknold's vocals waver... damn this was rough
Yeah, I'm shocked some people think this is a great version of the song. I also think Josh wasn't planned to do backup vocals. Just feels like more of a competitive thing and if you know what went on behind the scenes of this concert, you can kind of see why Pecknold seemed most at ease doing mostly solo performances for Shore.
Then go WWOOF your life away... if you were serious then it would be an easy thing to accomplish. You even get to keep the hot showers and indoor plumbing a lot of the time!

You can really tell this concert was pure chaos. But it made for a great show.

You can actually hear the noise of the micro falling on the floor :p
@Cozza420 it's a homemade device that mimics a hammered dulcimer
@Cozza420 it looks like a marxophone first time seeing one on a guitar though they used alot of weird stuff on this album
no one is stopping you...

Man, I love Fleet Foxes to death, but their time is just all over the place here...

what is that contraption on his guitar at 3:08??
@adamgore1 yep youre right
@maximus50238 Accordion?
@Sodadancer Harmonium
j tillman threw the mic lmao
Then do it. No one is stopping you.
Who the hell disliked this?...
whats that instrument thats being pumped?
I believe it's either an Indian Harmonium
Well it's a harmonium deffo but not sure what kind
@EdotAnonymous well said
I'm so fucking mad at fjm's mic. His harmonies were perfect. This would have been the best version of HB
I think the uniqueness of his mic stand failing make this such a memorable performance. So I don't think I'd have it any other way.
the hell is that thing on his guitar at 3:10? lol

Fleet Foxes holds some of the best "Fascist"/Esoteric Traditionalist artists of our time.
ohh jaja what happen wargo??
with those John Frusciante like high harmonies? thats ridiculous
0:15 chord fail
Is it only me or is there something wrong with the mix?
Doubt it.
Up up up fucked up there I see at the beginning. It's okay.
2:30 fuck microphones !

Damn... Lost one of the harmonies. :(

Is it just me or is the bassist weak and holding them back?
