  • The TurboGrafx-16 mini console was announced not too long ago, so I thought it would be fun to see what you got when you bought the original console back in 1989! Originally intended to be a competitor with the Nintendo Entertainment System, NEC brought the TG16 over to North America just a little bit too late, and the NES along with the Sega Genesis crushed it as a result.
    While it suffered a terrible fate at the time, these days the TurboGrafx-16 is thought of fondly by those who have played it, and is actually home to some really incredible games! Add the CD-ROM addon into the mix and you'll really find some gems to play, especially if you like RPGs and arcade shooters.
    So get ready to take a trip back to the totally radical past as we kick things into nirto and turbo-charge our way to seeing just what's inside and on the outside of the TurboGrafx-16's box! Then check out my video where we unbox the TG16's Japanese counterpart, the PC Engine, CoreGrafx and compare what changes were made when it came over from the East! You'll be surprised just how many there are. Here's the link to that video:
    • PC Engine CoreGrafx Co...
    Also feel free to share what some of your favorite TurboGrafx-16 games are in the comments down below, and what games you hope to see on the TurboGrafx-16 Mini!
    Check out my Twitter page where I post updates on new videos, images of my collection, news about what games I'm playing, and more!

    It's funny because I hit the gold mine when I found a stoner that loved the TGFX16 and I got the majority of my TG collection from him. I seriously wouldn't be surprised if it was from this same dude.

    Very cool video! So few of us have ever unboxed a Turbo Grafx-16 console (er ... system) before. In high school I knew a guy who had one and it was an interesting novelty, but it's almost as interesting to see what it would have been like to open one for the first time, and to see that NEC foresaw CIB collector culture, ha ha ha!

      Thanks for watching! I'm really happy to hear that you enjoy and see value in videos like this. Personally I think it's a lot of fun to open up the box of a retro console and see what it's like inside!

    The turbo is bigger because FFC regulations made the original PC engine impossible to release here at the time. They required extra RF shielding which wouldnt fit inside a PC engine.

    • @TheGameDisplay
      @TheGameDisplay  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting! They definitely didn't have to go as big as they did though, but still that explains things a little bit!

    Not only the PC Engine, the TurboGrafx 16, and the original Game Boy has the cartridge lock, but the Japanese Mega Drive does it too.
    And if you don't have the power supply for this console, then the Genesis Model 1 power supply should work. (DC output, negative polarity, and at least 730ma)

    This is such an underrated console. There are games on here that make a lot of Genesis and SNES games look like garbage. Bonk series? Ordyne? Legendary Axe 1&2? Bloody Wolf?
    Come on now.

    The only reason I knew about the TG16 back in the day was because of Rondo of Blood, but they never sold it in Europe I believe. It has a lot of cool games though, like Neutopia, the original Bomberman and Ys.
    Also, it's definitely not a 16-bit system because it has an 8-bit CPU, and bitness is mainly a property of the CPU.

    • @TheGameDisplay

      Thank you for your comment! It's amazing just how many great games the TurboGrafx-16 & TGCD got. If I had to choose between a Sega CDX or a Turbo Duo, I'd probably go with the Duo!

    Have to ask..I hear a Canadian accent, I get the impression that the Tg-16 was a bit more popular in Canada rather the US. Did NEC directly supply Canada? Just curious .

    • @TheGameDisplay
      @TheGameDisplay  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure that the TG16 was necessarily more popular in Canada than the US. Until I got into collecting I honestly hadn't heard of the console and knew no one who owned one growing up. My childhood definitely saw the SNES and Genesis dominate!

    • @kevinstrade2752
      @kevinstrade2752 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Game Display I'm a 46 year old gamer, I remember those days well. Tg-16 was not name brand enough to be popular. Everyone knew Nintendo and Sega, who the hell was this tg-16 and seemingly copy cat games? Come to find out many years later there were a lot of arcade games ported over to the tg-16. Unfortunately I never knew that ninja spirit, vigilante and others were actual arcade games. It was an odd man in a bit war atmosphere. I have a good collection of turbo related stuff. I live in western new york and share a simular accent. That's how I picked it up. For some reason I thought Canada had direct distribution from nec where as Nintendo and Sega had to come through US therefore more pricier and less available? I will have to look into this, its an interesting topic. Thanks for responding!!! Take care.

    Good job on the videos as always my friend back in the day I grew up with Sega Genesis and the NES so I have never heard of this system however I did watch The AVGN cover this system tho if memory serves right I think he destroyed his Turbo Grafx 16 out of frustration by the way I finally got over my TH-cam Jitters and I am less shakey and nervous I will try to send you some commentary I made through Facebook Live if your interested by the way I always wanted to ask I recently watched your Super Mario World lets play with Milesluigi I was curious was Super Mario World Central that picky of a website cause I heard you make serveral jokes about it lol well I will talk to you later my friend I am going to watch Dr. Phil and eat some fresh fruit for a snack I am looking forward to part 2 I am glad I watched this video because I learned a little bit about this console take care my friend

      @TheGameDisplay  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jake! Thank you for watching! It's great to hear that you're on your way to perfecting your TH-cam commentary! Super Mario World Central really did use to be that strict, and there was definitely way to big of a focus on small errors than there was on whether or not something was fun to play. I think they've gotten a bit better in recent years though.
      I'm happy that you learned about the TurboGrafx-16 by watching my video! Thank you for looking forward to part 2, and keep an eye out for a silly video that will be up tomorrow! :)

    the turbo failed in the united states because they did literally everything wrong 😑
    no 2P despite the (horrible) redesign.
    strange/bad retail box
    complete lack of advertising
    its like, people didn't even know it existed
    horrendously expensive CD addon
    (VERY good games though)
    i still cant believe how out of touch the corporate bigwigs were 🤗

      With how much bigger the TurboGrafx-16 redesign was, they really could have included 2 controller ports right out of the box! I wonder how that might of changed things. It is a shame what became of the console though since there really were many fantastic games for it. Thank you so much for watching and commenting! :)

      @@TheGameDisplay killer upload/ its one of my favorite systems of all time - its just frustrating that they didnt even pretend to have commercials outside of metropolitan areas.
      it was still the wild west days in terms of hardware sales/marketing so i guess that had a ton to do with it as well (growing pains)
      if things were different i can almost guarantee it would be as fondly remembered as the snes or genesis
