  • Nick Guthe said his wife Heidi Ferrer, a well-known Hollywood screenwriter, had been battling debilitating symptoms for more than a year before she died by suicide. Guthe tells CNN's Alisyn Camerota about his late wife's struggle as a Covid-19 "long hauler."
If you or someone you know needs help, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-TALK (8255). #CNN #News

Unfortunately, this is part of a much longer problem. Patients with chronic conditions are treated horrendously by our terrible health care system. We are left to figure things out on our own. We are constantly ignored and dismissed. As a chronic pain patient, I understand just how hard it is and have been suicidal from excruciating pain more than once. Nobody believed me and nobody cared.

Same here. I’ve been battling chronic pain for over 12 years now and it’s not like I sit and beg people for compassion in fact, I don’t even tell people anything anymore, but to have people act like I’m exaggerating or being lazy when I was very athletic and worked as a RN in hospitals and nursing homes for 20 years. (I was the oldest of 6 kids on a dairy farm, was in gymnastics & competed at the state level in the high hurdles, played saxophone, was voted the best dancer of my class, etc.) has made me essentially a hermit. I would rather be alone than to be around people that are such assholes about everything. At first, I went to numerous doctors and specialists and couldn’t get any definitive answers other than arthritis and a herniated disc but many thought I was a drug seeker. It’s not the pain that has almost killed me but the lack of support and feeling of letting people down because I’m not dependable anymore. I can only imagine how low this lady was feeling because I’ve been through it and still deal with it. The way president Trump lied about this and politicized it has only added more pain and misery to people already suffering and the misinformation and cruelty has only amplified. Then you add in the financial cost of being sick and not being able to work anymore and it’s such a drastic change to your life and your identity that it can take you to the depths of despair never imagined. It has taken me years to get to a certain level of acceptance after all the other stages of grief ( denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance) but the depression seems to be never ending and has been the one thing that has almost taken me down for good and I battle it daily. Our fast pace, dog eat dog, pull yourself up by the bootstraps society has become a very lonely and cold world to live in when you can’t cut the mustard anymore and sadly there will be many more people that will come to the same tragic ending as this sweet lady. I’m very sorry that she suffered so greatly that she had to get off this ride before her time to end the pain and I feel so sad for her family who so clearly loved her so much. Sometimes a person just can’t handle the torment any longer and you can’t be angry at them for leaving because they didn’t want it to be this way. If it wasn’t for my family I wouldn’t have made it this long.

Since covid late last fall I've become diabetic, have random chest pains and shortness of breath, worsened apnea, and have strange random strong pains and sensations in my chronic pain areas. Chicken usually smells like ammonia and fruits smell like vomit. The worst during the active infection was the 2 days it felt like my brain stem was at war with my body.
Im not the typical pain patient due to outwardly spoken past addiction. Nobody cares outside of my GP and his hands are tied.
Hope this helps somebody who might be feeling alone.

I hear you. I've been a Chronic Pain Sufferer since 1975. I tried to get help but the concensus was it was all in my head. My parents bought into the bs too. I was 15 years old, an only child. My mother was going into menopause and my father was becoming an alcoholic. I had no support. I reasoned that I was born to suffer. Eventually I was diagnosed with 2 deformities in my spine. I could go on, but you don't need to hear this. May Peace and Strength be with you.

I’m a covid long hauler.. after having covid and being hospitalized for 12 days.. I was discharged with oxygen and a steroid that had me out of my mind… To continue to feel miserable everyday.. To be in pain everyday with just aspirin prescribed ( because you’re dr swears it’s all in you’re head) To not be able to sleep and all these medications thrown towards you to have no long haulers clinic… I have often thought about ending things myself as well! Nobody knows how bad this effects you’re mental health but the people that have been sickened by this horrible sickness.. we do…To be 44 years old and have brain fog and absolutely no energy new pain and just feeling so alone.. I can understand this! My prayers are with you and you’re family!

My husband is behind in our rent and other bills because my long haul symptoms kept me out of work for 14 months now. i reached out for help to programs and organizations and been rejected. It is unfortunate and sad that us long haulers who need the help the most are getting rejected. Things need to change and i agree about the government needs to step up and offer us help when we need it. God bless us all.

    • @wildgardens
      @wildgardens 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@jessicah3450 The reason why LC is compared to ME/CFS is because a subset of LC (myself included) suffer from post-exertional malaise (PEM) which is the cardinal symptom of ME/CFS. PEM is unique to ME/CFS. Sadly most doctors do not know anything about PEM, if they did, you would not have been misdiagnosed, so you have suffered due to their ignorance. Similarly people who are suffering from PEM get told by ignorant doctors to exercise which is the worst thing you can do if you have PEM. So basically everyone loses. That is why it is so critical that the different subsets of LC are clearly defined and treated appropriately and that doctors learn about PEM so they can clearly identify patients who do or do not have ME/CFS.

The way Trump treated this who situation is criminal and now his followers go out assaulting the public for wearing masks or when being asked to wear them in stores and on public transportation, etc. The politicization by Trump was the final nail in the proverbial coffin and people have only become more emboldened to harass and hurt people modeling their dear leaders horrid behavior towards others. The republicans have revealed just how evil and self serving they are as a party by continuing the big lie and still trying to kill the Affordable Care Act with no other plan for healthcare to take its place. They quite simply just want us to die.

If we didn't have a braindead idiot leading the country, we likely would have halved the death total and stopped the spread because we've done it before. I am truly sorry that this man lost his wife, mother of his children and partner. Regarding the fact that she had symptoms of pain that people CANNOT see is a HUGE problem with those who do NOT understand, nor bother to care about for those who have chronic pain issues. I am one of those MANY people who have chronic pain problems from a vehicle accident in the 90s. A big rig truck decided that he had to be in the lane I was in. I ended up driving up and over two curbs, bushes and across the exit. Luckily I didn't hit anybody, but I lost a tire. I didn't have any pain problems at that time, forward ten years (2005) and I started having pain in my teeth, which I eventually found out that my vertebrae had slowly "squished" down and that was causing me pain in my teeth, neck, and I ended up with peripheral neuropathy and a hosts of other health problems. I also ended up with a bunch of GI problems and an now a permanent anemic. I've had to have transfusions twice, once because of ulcers and the 2nd time I lost what amounted to about 2 pints of blood. As of today, my hemotaligist does not know why I keep losing blood.
What I am trying to get across is that when an illness occurs and when people don't "see" an obvious reason for tbat illness or the symptoms, does NOT mean that someone is hurting or "disabled." I have to tell people that my medical conditions are "invisible" because I'm not walking around with a cast, crutches or using a walker or wheelchair. I spent almost a year telling people that when they touched me it was painful and still to this day I still have trouble with people touching me. Luckily at about 16 years later I am now to a point where as long as I can take something to keep my pain levels down, I can live an almost decent life. What this poor woman and her family went through is way worse than my issues, but medical technology is improving at a fast pace. Hopefully a cure can be found for these long haulers, the problem is that each person has different types of pain and it makes it difficult to diagnose them. And sometimes because a partner may not understand why you're hurting and say, "it's all in your head," which is what I got from my now ex-husband, a lot of people end up divorced. Like me.
Please try to be more patient and understanding of your partner's health if you are a long hauler or have any other type of medical problems.

They need physical health support more than mental health support. Mental health support won’t help. The suicide happens because life is so hellish for people with ME/CFS and long haul covid. I dealt with exactly what he describes for 10 years before I finally found something that helps; but I’m still debilitated. Studies have found that ME/CFS (and presumably long covid as well) has an average quality of life equal to an AIDS or cancer patient in the last two months of life.
The medical community has ignored ME/CFS for 30 years and the federal budget has only been $3-4 million per year for decades. We could have been ready for this; but the powers that be ignored the problem for decades. They tried to say it was just a mental health issue and that people just needed to exercise; they ignored all the Olympic level athletes who got sick on the 80s and declined to do real research. It’s easier for the medical community to just engage in armchair speculation and assume they know what causes these diseases than do the actual science.

Yes, it is terrible to hear this, but is a better outcome than what she was faced with, viz. endless suffering. Explanation:
Philosopher David Hume wrote, in his essay "On Suicide" in which he defended both the right to, and rationality of, suicide, that: “No man ever threw away life while it was worth keeping.” I believe that, that no person ends a life that they feel (and it ultimately ONLY matters what THEY feel) is worthwhile.
So, in this instance, if there was not going to be any cure or great relief of her pain and suffering, I am glad she is at least free from it. A different outcome, in which her health was restored, would obviously be the much preferred one, but nonexistence is much better over a pain filled existence that the person no longer feels worthwhile. So, in that sense, I am glad she is out of her suffering and applaud her bravery and letting reason guide her decision to end her life.

For the pain, since the cells get over active and causes damage to the nerve endings/muscles, biofreeze gel & ibuprofen helps with the pain but check with the doctor to make sure they mix well with other medications people might be on. Ice when swelled & heat when not. I found the rubbing the areas or vibrating pad helped for stimulation. when not mobile. Also, the doctor was giving me muscle relaxers for the swelling as well.
I myself would cry when I woke up because I was still here.
I made it through that part and got to the point to where I only had weakness & exhaustion morso. Then a time passed by and the 3 pages of common allergies set in. That was the hardest part. However, the Allergies have gotten much better now & I still have to take benadryl to di certain things like cut my grass & even then, I sometimes throw up.
People who experience this I say
    DON'T GIVE UP !
It's very hard but you ARE strong enough if you try. I know that people might give you a hard time because of disbelief & it really hurts for people not to believe you but, you know the truth & that's what matters. Don't give up !

Maybe if CNN would have told people about the cheap and effective drug that works, this wouldn't have happened.
Censoring this info that's backed up by studies was wrong.
Pharma companies should show who they're donating to.

Symptoms are similar to what is called CFS/ME. It's extremely difficult to live with (I know from personal experience). A few good days with many debilitated days. Sad story for this family... so sorry.

Sounds a lot like the neuropathy I suffered from too much paclitaxel in chemo. I still have the elevated heartrate, but got rid of the pain and tremors with 15 g of the amino acid glutamine daily for three months. It was a lot cheaper than the lyrica my oncologist wanted me to take, and rather than being a destructive palliative, it was a cure.

I suspected I had long haul covid for a LONG time after my flatmate and I got sick in December 2019, then his mate got sick from us and was one of the first covid cases recorded in London. Since then I’ve had this horrible brain fog/depression, and in January I suffered stress induced fluid leak in my eye and lost vision. The doctor said it had to be stress, because he only sees that issue in diabetics or people using steroids. I moved to America during covid, and I do t know anyone here. So because of the brain fog, depression, and losing an eye, I just stay in bed all day every day

Words cannot describe how it feels to lose a spouse. The shock is the biggest part of it.
