    That replaced 2N transistor with hard to read marking looks like counterfeit. We had issue where TO-3 transistors bought from somewhat reputable supplier would not last, and when investigating I found out that all were counterfeits. All of those had similar looking markings and a dull grey top, that was in fact a grey paint! It wiped right off with acetone leaving shiny clean metal top. I opened couple of those faulty ones, and also broken old ones to compare them, and the counterfeit transistors had tiny die glued inside, where the old ones had much larger die bonded to internal heat spreader.
    Otherwise nice repair! I have not yet seen that badly burned Data East power board, but good thing you could get that connector back in. Weakest link always gives up, and fuses are made to be that for a reason :-)

    Very nice. I have the same machine and had a fault on +100V side. Capacitor juice had shorted that 100V to ground and a smaller hole was in the center of the PSU board. I see that is charred there also on that orig board in this video. Swapped caps and made 2 jump wires and now it works again.

    I would clean up that power supply PCB the best you could, and check the burnt area to make sure it's not conductive. The burnt portion of the PCB becomes carbonized and can become conductive, thus you want to make sure it's not touching anything else which it may effect on.

    I used to repair hols in pcb's by removing all the burned material with a mini drill and carbide bit then making a new little pcb the same as the old one then using epoxy resin glue the patch in, finaly solder link wires to join up old and new copper tracks. i never had one come back. yes it takes a couple of hours but if the board is expensive its worth salvaging

    I don't think the bridge rectifier shorted out; that would have caused different damage. I think the original connector probably had a bad solder joint that started arcing. The fuses didn't blow because it was still drawing only the current that the normal circuitry needed. There was no short circuit, just a bad contact but it was the contact where all the current of the entire circuit was supposed to go through. So as you would say it: always check for bad solder joints, and take them seriously, people!
    Great video as always! Too bad there's not much to show for this repair (though bringing that power supply back to life was probably a lot of work). There's a lot of circuitry in this one.

    It comes in a variety of colours and may be tintable but not sure. Mainly developed for tool handles etc but it's great for lots of stuff because it's a fairly rugged coating. It can be dipped or brushed on.

  • @EsotericArctos

    Question: Is there a reason you didn't use the components off the "parts" board to repair the "replacement" unburnt board? Just curious if there was something wrong with the big transistor off the old board or was it just easier to use new? You definitely did a good thing by the customer using the unburnt board. You really do look after your customers.
    With the burnt ground, it might not have been a direct short. It may have been a bad solder joint that was arcing and caused the board to burn. The ground carries all the current from the game so there could have been upto 8 amps worth of arcing happening there, which wouldn't kill the fuse, but would burn up the board.

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There wasn't anything wrong with that transistor I just figured I'd put a new one in the other one... It could have been swapped over though for sure.... That's a good point about the arcing, it's a common problem and they were aware of it, I think that's why they made that one pigtail connector on them anyways to try to change that but as you can see they had all kinds of problems with that design... I guess the way they saw it was once it lasted 2 or 3 years they wanted you to buy a new game anyways, lol
      Thank you for watching Brendan we appreciate it as always!!!

    JOE CLASSIC, I'm confused about how they lamps are Strobed because it uses 18vdc since its being strobed its only getting 6vdc. The Strobe is turning on/off the 18vdc at a duty cycle to only provide 6vdc but what I'm confused about is why didn't the designer just use 6vdc ( without a strobe signal) instead of using 18vdc with a strobe signal to get 6vdc. What would be the upgrades on this power supply to prevent the burning damage on the connectors? It seems that the Bridge Rectifiers AMP ratings specs needs to be upgraded as well as that TO2 package transistor regulator?

    • @ovalteen4404
      @ovalteen4404 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would take too many individual circuits to individually light up every light constantly. All electronics that have dozens or more elements to light up will use the strobe method because then you only need a grid of wires with driving elements for one side of the grid, not one for every single element. So pinball games, microwave displays, LCDs, etc. They all strobe the individual light elements (or more precisely, groups at a time) at a speed that's fast enough that you can't perceive it.

    • @waynegram8907
      @waynegram8907 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ovalteen4404 Ok I get that part. What I don't understand is the Diodes used in the Matrix if you remove all the Diodes in the matrix for some reason it causes errors not sure why because the strobe signal is still going to flow in one direction from Row to Column so the diode is not determining a one way Polarity of the strobe signal. So I don't understand what the purpose of having all those diodes in the lamp and switch matrix systems.
