The funniest thing is the opening image shows the ship from One Piece, where there isn't a single pirate with an eye patch in the entire anime, although there are thousands of pirates in it.
I've seen this myth spread many times before, and there are huge problems with it. 1. Pirates absolutely did wear eyepatches to cover missing eyes, that was one of the most common injuries suffered during naval battles. 2. It is possible, sure, but below deck is not nearly as dark as it's made out to be, so it's pointless. I've been on antique, age of sail vessels at sea and I could see perfectly fine without any form of assistance or without letting my eyes adjust to the dark first, since it's not very dark at all. 3. There is absolutely 0 historical evidence that this was ever the reason sailors wore eyepatches. 4. Wearing eyepatches would be a great hinderance in battle, the loss of depth perception could throw you off significantly and get you killed.
Good points, the actual reason as i heard is that sailors was using sexant for navigation and if they don't use proper shield for thier eyes gets burnt from sun. Nowadays their is shade lenses instead.
You're right. If this was such a great idea then why can we not find any evidence of it at all, even within professional navies of different countries, which are often well documented?
By covering one eye you would be losing valuable peripherial vision, doesn't really sound feasible to me. Besides there is no historical evidence to this claim.
One eyed was laied against a man which had good eyes that he saw better than him. The party was accepted. "I had gain, over" said the one eyed; why I see you two eyes, and you not look me who one.
This is such bs. Then why didn't all pirates or sailors wear them? And the loss of depth perception? Our eyes don't take 30 minutes to adjust to the dark... internet fail.
i see what you did there with the one piece ship at the beginning...nice touch.

There's definitely a background character with one I'd be supposed if there wasn't

In sbs Oda said he’s saving the eye patch for a certain character
Good video, also nice one piece reference
I don't think its true because the 2 eyes dilate or narrow together (light reflex)
I discovered this phenomenon years ago and thought I'd invented something new but I guess these guys beat me by a couple of hundred years
Got to know something which I had not noticed earlier. Nice
Who else is here from FreeQuranEducation?
Salams. We have a crew and all we need is a ship😉

July 5, 2020-- FUN FACT: Back then pirates did NOT have sunglasses. They weren't invented..
Love the animations.
I thought for better focus and projection in sea while on ship. Thanks 😊
Nice informative video . keep it up the good work.
Very nice explanation
DIABETIC RETINOPATHY and HYPERTENSIVE RETINOPATHY videos please...it would be so helpful .thank you :D
My guess would have been because some pirates had a parrot on their shoulder and the bird took out their eye LOL!
Note: this only works for some people, not everyone can have this technique due to their different eye adaption
Thousand sunny
It’s true I tried it and it works 👁
In theory it works, however in practice, it's only a myth.

I hear you but I will disagree with your statement

Yes but make it less complicated
