Honest experience: I started skating on a 7.75, it's amazing for learning flips and it's pretty light, so if you are new to skating, it's a nice start. At my peak I skated 8.25 when I jumped stairs or went on rails. Also it depends on the size of your feet. I'm an 11.5, and when I tried a 7.75 it was incredibly small and uncomfortable. Also the larger the size of the board the harder it is to break , which means less boards more money. But 7.75 would be amazing if for instance you are learning tricks, like underflips, nolie, switch, backside flips etc.

I recently got back into skating and bought a 8.25 but then found my old 7.75 in the attic.
I think I‘ll ride the 7.75 for now until my body has gotten stronger.

As a 52 year old beginner, I have an 8 and an 8.5 (picked them both up used on offer-up for $55 total).
I like to learn new things like dropping-in on my 8.5 due to the stability, and then later learn them on the 8.0.

Well y'know back then skating smaller boards was the "trendy" thing . Skinny boards , baggy jeans , vhs tapes . Now it's all fat ass boards , skinny jeans , instagram stories . Times change . But IMHO 8 inches is probably the best size . Sure it doesn't flip like a 7.75 and it doesn't have the room an 8.25 has ... But it really gives you the best of both worlds .. And I'm skating a 7.75 . Sometimes this lack of 6 millimeters made me lose a trick and the fact that 7.75 flips like crazy has made some of my pop shove it and with the board trying to kill me

Just picked up a new 8.75" anti hero deck today, and I threw some of my old 8.75" Stage 11 Independent trucks, the standards not the hollows or titaniums. Also threw some 55mm Spitfire Formula 4 99 durometer wheels in the Classic shape. Big deck, big wheels, heavy independent trucks, that's what I like. It's not nimble, but this heavy setup will grind through the gnarliest, chunkiest street ledges, it maintains speed well when skating transition, and it rides over rough ground nicely due to the taller wheels and wider deck. It's not nimble, it's just a heavy duty street-crusher setup and I love it. These are the kinds of setups we skate here in the rough roads of southern Wisconsin.

Between this and another similar Braille video, I think I’m going to start with an 8.0, mainly to roll around the park after a scooter session. Looking simply roll well on a board, get comfortable and in control, and then learn even the simplest of tricks (and for reference, I’m 5’8”, wear a 9.5 sneaker, and usually rock white tee shirts from Costco!)

Started skate again after 26 years, now being 41, that was a month ago. Bought a 7.75 (5 year old daughter chose it). For a month felt like a hippo riding a chopstick. Landed ollies, scared to death cruising. Got a 10 inch. MUCH BETTER. So my tip for beginners? Buy a large board. You will do basic tricks, land safe, feel safe and gain confidence. After a few months/years if you progressed enough, ride something small. Even on this video, larger feels actually safer and Kyro is a pro.

Agreed. I learned on a large circa 1980's single tail board. When I decided to midlife crisis it up and reintroduce myself to the sport, pretty well all of the modern decks felt small to me. I actually think I could take this to a skatepark and do some tricks.... but a 36" length double kick tail may actually feel better.

if you are young, small and a beginner get a powell super light.. best board for young beginners, especially if you are shorter. to determine your board size, your shoe should fit perfectly around the curve of the tail. this way there isn't too much board for shoe, and too much shoe for board will result in drags and bad technique. trust me, i've skated since 2003 and i've got it down to a science. this guy is right its personal preference, but there has to be a margin for beginners, a system otherwise you'll end up thinking a skinny board is good and it can hold you back for years until you realize you should always have had a different one(as you witness here with this doofus, he realizes instantly he needs a bigger board) a proper board size will help your pop and catch, and how level you are in the air. no one cares about how fast you can flip your board and quick flips aren't important. remember we as skateboarders want to see the flip, thats why we do them… you want hang time. when was the last time a skater was loved for how fast he flipped? no, its his pop, catch and hang time that sets him apart, every time... truck size matters too(back in the day tensors were the best trucks to buy, but now they aren't what they used to be, i have the rodney mullen signatures, or magnesium sliders actually, and they are great, but the kingpin is too long, bushings are skinny though they still feel great...). get the standard wheel size 52mm. get generic wheels that the shop offers, no matter what people say, you don't need spitfires…(get the ugly tan/whitish color are the best, no dies in the rubber and they will last years) get bones reds bearings they are the best on the market and affordable, if you don;t have enough speed, get larger wheels but with looser trucks you'll make contact when turning more other wise try the bones swiss, ... never buy shoes too big or too small. get them just right and tight. shoes make all the difference. and you will be burning through shoes quicker than you grow so don't worry about 100$ shoes at first, you won't have the technique to know the difference. but get shoes with padding cause you will be hurting your feet if you don't. shoes that when you put them on should feel like walking on a cloud, avoid shoes that feel hard when you walk. vans used to be the best on the market, but they seriously went down hill, still i do recommend vans off the wall, tnt specifically were the best shoes to skate in.. but like i said don't compare anymore. (THE WORST THING YOU CAN DO AS A BEGINNER IS HAVE TOO LARGE OF SHOES FOR YOUR FEET AND TOO SKINNY OF A BOARD..i know from experience)
all that being said, avoid puddles of water or mud, don't step in water if you do make sure your shoes are dry before riding, stick to the dry cement. if you ride through water make sure you don;t leave your board sitting with wet wheels or bearings, they'll rust and seize up, a wet board will warp, crack and lose its pop, it will hold you back and can even cause you to injure yourself. try to stick to smooth pavement for ollies as this prolongs the tail and your pop. you need a new board when the tail starts changing shape from being worn away, this is usually when the pop dies. take care of your board and your board will take care of you. tight trucks help with learning to land, and stability riding down large hills. loose trucks are just fun, but too loose of trucks will cause your wheels to wear the board at the pivot point, and this wears down your wheels causing them to have a camber effect that looses stability. so rotate and flip your wheels every so often to nullify this. the only thing i can think of extra is when you put on your wheels, don't over tighten the bolts, they should be flush with the edges of the axle. . if you have more questions, then message me back. and remember always have fun, and respect your fellow skaters, we are a family grown from outcasts, we are all we have.

    • @treatb09
      @treatb09 7 ปีที่แล้ว

Quentin Kaalekahi its hard to say. a wider board will inhibit you in some ways to your proper shoe size unless you have the developed muscles. you aren't very tall, but with a size ten american shoe, i'd start you off with a 7.5 to 7.75. like i mentioned in my comment, the most perfect way i've ever found a board to suit me was with my shoe fitting around the tail specifically to the curvature. this allows an even amount of force when applied through an ollie. if you shoe doesn't fit your board how will your board fit you? when i started my first set up was a 7.5 super light powell, and i had size 13 shoe. it was fucking miserable. took me 6 months to learn to ollie because i had everything going against me. now i skate a size 11 shoe, and an 8 inch deck. big difference… just make sure those shoes fit like tights, but aren't too tight to cause pain. shoes should fit like a glove. the board should feel just right, and you will learn that with time. so in all, i'd say try a 7.5 so you can know what a too small board feels like then try a 7.75 for the next deck, and even an 8.0. i've had too large of boards and they never felt right. flip was too slow for my foot. when you hit the right size, trust me you will know...

I skated 7.825 for like a decade, took a few-year hiatus, and when I came back... everyone was skating like 8.5's and stuff.
I genuinely tried for like 4 years to skate bigger boards (8.25, 8.125 etc.), but, eventually, every time I got a new deck, I found myself going with smaller and smaller sized boards. As nice as it is to have a board that's easier to land on, you just have so much more control with flip tricks on skinnier decks... which, with me and my skating, is just more fun.
    (SHRUGS SHOULDERS)
But yeah... it's just personal preference.

I stopped skating for 20 years back in 1998 and back then, just about everyone around me was skating 7.5. An 8 inch board was considered to be big. An 8.5 was considered a heavy log. When I got back into skateboard a few years ago, just for something to do, I was amazed by the sizes that guys were currently skating. As long as the trucks have become lighter, the slightly wider decks do make sense, though. I was skating when the popsicles came out and they were wonderful. We were so used to insanely heavy boards and trucks in the early 90's that when smaller, lighter and easier to flip boards hit the market, we loved them. The tech skating fad of the time really promoted the skinny decks. But now things are so light that an 8+ deck makes sense and is doable.

if you're a short skater with size 6-8.5 shoes i heavily recommend 7.75 or 8. easier to pop, lighter and better feel.
EDIT: No longer replying, feel free to use this as reference:
If you're tall, Get anything above 8.0
If you have big feet get anything 8.25 and above
If you're short, stick to 8.0 and 7.75
If you have small feet stick to 7.75

    • @rainfevers

@@sandyyyyyvv well boards are usually measured for men so translate 4 women into 4 mens; That would be a size 2 shoe meaning youd be safe on a 7.5 or a 7.75. if the measurement you gave me was a mans size the same applies but lean more heavy towards the 7.75.

@@spider2765 An 8.0 deck or an 8.25 deck would be your best bet, although 8.0 would be the optimal one for your small stature, an 8.25 is a small bit wider if you intend to do ramps and cruise more than tricks.
