  • Logging and skidding cedar, oak, maple, in Quebec and Ontario, Canada in the summer, no snow but very hot! Didn't get stuck in the mud.

I’ve always wanted a John Deere 440 skidder. Great little skidders.

Yes, a great farmer machine in my opinion.

Love the little 440 A had the same unit when I started out. Great little machines skid for 8 hours on 5 gal of fuel.

Yes very nice little machine - tippy though! Pucker factor of ten a couple of times. Tanks for watching!

Looks to be the older style winch which has the clutch activating fluid going thru the cover. These winches are fairly simple to work on, you most likely could use some new springs on the brake band and / or tightening it. Possibly a valve issue. Best to bend a wrench up so you can adjust the band thru the small 4 bolt cover. If you need the Deere only $500 seal kit, we found a substitute for much less. We get the brake bands relined for around $250. As many guys are getting back into logging we have been fixing 350 and 450 Crawlers winches as they sell.
I think you will find the Deere moves the same or more wood in a day pulling smaller loads and getting back to chocked up quicker, plus very easy to get on and off of.
I have a 440B powershift which doesn’t get used much but a joy to run. Found my dad a dead 440 needing an engine this past winter. He put a 4.5L in it buy accident (thought it was a 239 or 4039. Runs and starts great with incredible torque. Swapped the winch with one we rebuilt and just a few small leaks and we will have it ready to sell. I think he is enjoying it as he bought his first 440 in 71, rental return unit.

Always enjoy an old Tree Farmer in operation. Them poor 'skeeters haven't got a chance behind that C5........!

How long is your cable and what size? How often do you break/replace?

What is the purpose of the chain from cab to tower? Storage, protection from a rogue tree felling?

Yes it keeps trees from falling I to the hinge area

I feel like you guys are living your best life yet but don't have time to make vids for us which is totally understandable. Doing the stuff is fun, not making the videos. 😂👍Keep up the good work!

Captain, is the 440 new and are you still on the same property? I didn’t think it was that hilly.

Beware winching with one rear tire against a tree ! Seen guys break the axle doing that. 😁

Looks like you need to sort out the brake of the JD winch.

Yes, take a few adjustments but just about there...doesnt pull like the c5, the winch will easily lay it on it's side - or when pulling a hitch that gets hung up on a corner it'll pull the machine over. Hand on the winch lever is very important

Awesome video, been wondering how the millwork was coming along. Im guessing the cedars are for decorative planks in the cabin? I see you’ve got to keep the momentum when pulling logs - probably easier on the machine. Didn’t know chipmunk ate snakes - cool. Cheers

We will have lots of cedar, selling some and milling some. Crazy chipmunk eh!
