      Season 8 was just the final part of the shit-smeared skid track the show has been sliding on for years.
      Season 5, with its butchering of the Dorne plot and the entire Northern storyline including Stannis, Jon, and the Boltons, was the tipping point and a much bigger, more sudden disappointment.

    How the fuck is Ed Sheehan showing up for about 2 minutes, adding nothing major to the plot, more controversial than when the King in the North, his wife, his mother, and his unborn son got murdered.

    • @richkee2024
      @richkee2024 6 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      Most people seem to agree that the Red Wedding was, while shocking, a fantastic storytelling twist, and one of the best examples of GOT showing the brutal realities of warfare where the good guys can be butchered when their guard is down. The storyline itself isn't controversial, more the very graphic presentation and the additional detail of Talisa being stabbed while pregnant.
      Ed Sheeran got a lot of flack just for appearing, even though they've always gone to pop singers for cameos when a character is required to sing. Sheeran wasn't badly cast, as he doesn't look out-of-place in the Medieval era and his folk voice fit the song. But he's already a divisive musician with a specific demographic, and it could look like pandering to his mostly young female fanbase, and he was perhaps "too" famous to drop in as an anonymous character.
      Plus, the viewing figures and media coverage in Season 7 compared to Season 3 is much, much higher. By the time Ed Sheeran appeared in the relatively uneventful premier, it was the big thing to grasp onto and make a fuss over.

  • @LoLz16065
    @LoLz16065 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1615

    Starting from 1, working my way up:
    Sansa's victimization: Strong characters are made by rough upbringings. Sansa was never going to fully mature and become "Lady of Winterfell" if she was still pining and swooning. It wasn't pleasant, but it was necessary.
    The Jamie Cersei scene: While not necessary, this scene showed that Jamie is conflicted within himself. He acts out of character because his two sides (his true self and his upheld image) are warring. This could have been a foreshadow to Jamie leaving Cersei.
    Joffrey's sadism: If you've read the books, you know Joffrey was sadistic. A Song of Fire and Ice is NOT a book series for light hearted people, neither is Game of Thrones. Know what you're getting into before you judge the show for going "too far". The actor for Joffrey did so well George RR Martin wrote him a letter stating "Congrats, everyone hates you!"
    The Shireen burning: I liked Shireen. I hated what they did to her. But it showed how devoted (or desperate) Melisandre is. Westeros is a rough country, and it gave us a reason to hate Melisandre.
    G. Bush's head: They ordered mass props. You can tell it wasn't meant to be noticeable. Give them a break.
    Sand Snakes: Yeah can't really defend this one. This video helped me understand why Dorne doesn't feel right to me. It's so disconnected from the world, yet it's supposed to be vital at the same time? I haven't red that far into the books, but I'm assuming the books connect Dorne better than the TV show.
    Oberyn's death: Brutal. Effing brutal. We all liked the Red Viper. He was sophisticated yet brutish, and he BEAT THE MOUNTAIN IN A FAIR FIGHT. But it's stuff like this that makes this show so sought after. Expect the unexpected.
    Theon to Reek: This was essential. It showed us what made him into a whipped dog, otherwise we would've just thought down on him (more). If all of the violent, over the top crap hadn't scared you off by this point, then how can you complain about this.
    Ed Sheeran: To each their own. If I was a successful pop star who loved a show like this, I'd like a part in it. They did give him a bit too much attention though, an extra would've been cool.
    The Red Wedding: This was the turning point for the show. This wedding showed us that just because we like a character, or they're super important, they're still fair game. This was necessary.
    If you're going to complain about everything in a show, just leave. Us fans don't want to hear your complaining, you've stuck around this long because you're obviously hooked. Just suck it up and watch the show. Or don't. Don't ruin the good quality of the show for those of us who love it for what it is. I'm sure there are some PG-13 medieval shows out there for you.

    People calling Ramsey or Joffrey "too one-dimensional" have little idea about the concept of pure, unrelenting evil.
    When it comes to truly evil people; there's no sad backstory to define their actions, no "ends justify the means" motive, no redeemable qualities and no "misunderstandings" to be found.
    Evil in its truest form seeks only one thing, to hurt and oppress others for their own sick pleasure

      i agree, but not for the same reason. I think they actually do have reasons to be that way, to be so fucked. Joffrey was raised as literally the crown prince so he's entitled, he's watched his distant father drink and whore and abuse his mother. Of course he'd come out worse for wear. And then Ramsay was raised by one of the cruelest, strangest most mysterious calculating characters (in the books at least), with the added built-in resentment and anger at the world that comes from being a bastard.

  • @raybeijos

    Why did Sansa's rape destroy her character development? That doesn't make any sense. A big part of Sansa in the show is her naivety and us seeing that naivety chip away. Her character grew stronger with each loss of innocence, and I don't think Sansa would be a badass at all if it weren't for her time with Ramsey. Sad as it is.

If people are offended by the show and don't enjoy it, then the solution is very simple, don't watch. If you don't like it then don't watch it, do not try and make it so that those would are fine with it unable to watch it too! That's just frankly close minded and unfair

      @Nicholas Mullennex I don`t think Watchmojo knows what "controversial" means either... Whole tone of this video, but two points, is : "uuuh that be too graphic!!! What about the children???"... Really? Whole history is littered with bones of people who gone through shit, that makes "Game of Thrones" look like lazy sunday afternoon, and people complain that this is too graphic?
      This ain`t at you, this is aimed at those fuckheads who cry after anything that shatter their view that world is nothing but ice cream and bubblegum
      Maybe they should read about Gulags, or Nazi Death camps? Read about women running away from their crying children, because if they wereen`t with children, they would be worked to death- which of course took longer- instead of gassed in "shower chamber" with cyclon b, which is same gass, as for rodents- 15 to 30 minutes of slowly puking your guts out, and slowly suffocating to death, while lungs burn with live fire... And 400 thousands of people went through that in ONE CAMP ALONE...
      Or how people were raped, beaten up, and made stand in rain and snow for 24 hours or more if they dare to even SAY something that present officer didn`t like- like they weren`t putting on show, how angry they are at person who ran away(a message for SJWs and their censoring the language)
      Or maybe about captured women- anything between 7 and 70- tied down at the road side, ordered by NKWD officers to be fucked bloody by every passing soldier- some couldn`t get it up, so they did it with glass bottles... And glass tends to break. 7 years old...
      How about Unit 731?
      Or how people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki slowly, literally fell to pieces after A- Bomb fell on their heads, and they were unfortunate enough not to evaporate on the spot?
      How about every medieval siege, when people had time to prepare to die- how mothers killed thier children, men killed their ewives and then threw themselves on the swords, or died fighting?
      How about Defending of Głowgów 1109- Holly Roman Empire chained the children of the defenders(hostages) to siege engines, thinking they won`t shoot at them... But they did
      Nope- a stupid show is something to cry about...

    • @MultiCash50
      @MultiCash50 6 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      Nancy Bruno yes, you can compare them. They both involve the first sexual experience of a young person in the presence of someone who intends to exploit them against their will. Both have their agency within the situation removed and you could even argue that sansa was willing at first as she agreed to marry Ramsey and she knew what would happen when she did.

    Some of this scenes might get be controversial, but were necessary for character development and to further the story. Joffrey was a sadistic bastard just like Ramsay, and both died because of it. Sansa was raped by Ramsay, but she became stronger and the strong leader she is now. Theon turned against the Starks, and betrayed them. He helped the Boltons and the tables turned on him. People need to see the bigger picture, and understand that in a story like Game of Thrones most scenes have significance and a purpose.

    Add this to the fact that most people (sadly) seem to hate Sansa , and that's she's a literal magnet for danger/bad luck, and that makes the "outrage" even more confusing. Those people getting flayed -- like Theon's men, or the old lady who tried rescuing Sansa -- was far, far worse.

    The point of these sadistic characters is the utter, glorious satisfaction when they die. Joffrey's and Ramsey's deaths were so wonderfully awesome because they were sadistic f**ks. I would say the most controversial part for me was the Red Wedding, specifically when Rob Stark's wife and baby were murdered. That was painful to watch. But it made Walder Frey's death at the hands of Arya much more satisfying.
    The violence can be too much for some, but it's very tame when you consider that this very same level of violence occurs every day outside of television.

      Riyaan Abrahams The Sand Snakes don't play a big part in the books, but the rest of Martell familiy does (Arianne and Doran for example) and I found their storylines really interesting, way more interesting than Brienne's or Sansa's in the books.

    • @Gagaloopony
      @Gagaloopony 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I didn't really hate the Sand Snakes tbh. They were a little annoying, but not that bad. And I can see why the writers didn't take much time on them. In the grand scheme of things, they don't actually do much to move the plot along (I haven't read the books, so maybe the part they play in them is bigger). oberyn Martell was cool, but the rest of the stuff going on in Dorne I found kind of boring. Every time we had to see that storyline, I was like "kay, can we like, go back to the dragons or something right now?'

    The rape of Sansa was horrible to watch, but it’s also an important part of who her character became. Not to mention, knowing he did that to her made his death scene and her little grin at the end so much better.

Or how about the incest as there are some people who won't even watch the show because it has incest, like we don't have incest in real life? Sleepy Cerberus yeah but then they toned it down to pretty much having no violence in that show at all. They now just have long dragged out boring conversations with a few fake warning punches thrown in there which have no significance to the plot at all. All because some pussy complained that it was too violent. Your don't get this show being toned down after caving someone's skill in. In fact it gets even more violent.

    • @User71956
      @User71956 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's been a while since I read "March to War", but from what I remember, there wasn't a lot of violence in the comics after that scene for the rest of the volume. So I don't think it was, "SJW's" or whatever, it was just after Glens death, they focused more on rick recruiting people to take on Negan. There's some dark shit with the Whispers, though so you can look forward to that :)
      I don't think Game of Thrones is too violent--I just think it tries too hard to be violent and edgy to the point where the pay off misses the mark completely because it tries to be too edgy for TV. However, I wouldn't call The Walking Dead the pinnacle of storytelling but the difference between the violence on the Walking Dead and GOT is that 98% of the deaths are from zombies and yeah, zombies eating people is pretty violent--it's not really anything you haven't seen from george a romero. Basically I think The Walking Dead knows it's a zombie show and at times has fun with it, but Game of Thrones takes itself too seriously and when it runs out of ideas or needs attention, they throw in a pointless rape or death because they need that twitter buzz.

    Well, we have had cameos by Coldplay in the Red Wedding episode, well know actors on the show such as Diana Rigg, Sean Bean and Peter Dinklage and unknown actors by the name of Jim Broadbent, Max Von Sydow, Not to mention Mr Filch from Harry Potter.
    But sure, Ed Sheeran takes people out of the show..

    its quite fascinating to me that multiple stabs in the guts of a pregnant woman, the most gruesome torture including chopping of the victims genitals, the explosion of a head from a widely beloved character who wanted to avenge his family and the freakin' burning of a child by her father and mother are considered less controversial than two rape scenes which weren't even very graphic...... kinda sad tbh
    also the ed sheeran cameo wasn't controversial because of 'reasons' but because the scene was more or less unnecessary, because sheeran was front and center with multiple close ups and a song and because it felt like it was just written in to showcase a cameo... not that i agree with the hate he's getting but get the reasons for the controversy straight at least

    • @alexandrahernandez7206
      @alexandrahernandez7206 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Seriously. Mojo did an awful countdown on this. Compared to what Ramsay did to Theon who was brutally tortured over Sansa getting raped by him? Getting flayed was more controversial than anything. The pain is ten times worse than getting penetrated.

  • @jacobdarling1524
    @jacobdarling1524 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    No 1 in the books was waaaay worse. Though it didn't involve Sansa it did involve Theon being forced to down on poor Jeyne Pool in order to make it easier for Ramsey to rape her. Also, I call bullshit that the Gendry and Mel scene isn't even on this list. Not only did the show completely get away with it but they also got away with playing it up for laughs in season 7 episode 6.

    While I agree Jaime raping Cersei was pointless and hurt Jaime's character, Ramsay raping Sansa seemed somewhat necessary for character development. The scene really highlighted Sansa's helplessness and cemented Ramsay as a heartless villian. Also, the fact that Theon was so broken up meant he still had a deep connection with Sansa and the Starks.
