That wasn’t just Maria crying. Carrie was as well. Audra’s voice is truly amazing.

@@manuelorozco7760 Me too. I remember seeing her for the first time in Annie. I was 7 and I thought she had one of the most beautiful singing voice. I had ever heard.
Notice that Audra starts very simply, each word separate. She slowly builds with each line to a more full vocal expression, until at the end, she is triumphant. Revelatory performance.
Carrie totally dropped character and is just clearly in awe.

My parents saw the original BC and I grew up on the album that they purchased afterwards. But no one AT ALL can match Audra. A true tour de force. I cry every time I watch it

Simply put - this was extraordinarily SUPREME!!! Audra didn't just sing the words and the notes (as I've heard WAY too many "pros" do), and she didn't just "sing" the meaning.....she DELIVERED it.....on a golden tray!!! BRAVA!!!!!

Wow, Audra McDonald being a natural soprano totally nailed this song, one of the best renditions for sure. I felt every emotions and her delivery is out of this world. People kept comparing this version to Gaga's live performance at the Oscar, there is really no comparison.
all the great opera sopranos have sung this - and they're great. but for me, the original version form the broadway show with Patricia Newell is the gold standard.

Audra made her Broadway debut in the 1994 revival of “Carousel” when she blew everyone away auditioning for the role of Carrie Pipperidge. She simply was the best for the role. The same applied here in 2013. Her “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” was heartfelt and magnificent.
I had forgotten about this one, as I saw it live, watching from Long Island where it was filmed. This is the perfect performance, and one in a lifetime. I will gift it to my 13 year old daughter. In today's world she will need this kind of inspiration to navigate these uncertain times. Climb every mountain, until you find your dreams! Never give up. Such a beautiful and touching performance.

What a storyteller Audra is. Her vocal choices are second to none. In the beginning, her pacing lags and is behind the beat to give a more casual feel. At the climax of the song, she is right on top of the beat which gives the lyrics a feeling of urgency
The genuine tears in both of their eyes has always made this so much more poignant ♥️

I like this version of the song much better than the one in the movie. Here, you can tell that the mother superior was singing this out of love, and wanting the best for Maria.

Well first off, The Sound of Music is definitely one of my top favorites. Secondly, holy moly, i never knew Audra did this. She was magnificent, Absolutely devine! This is now my favorite version of this magnificent musical. I adore Audra, bravo Audra! Someone please tell me if this is on dvd. 👏

I had no idea that Audra MacDonald could sing operatic repertoire, which this is. She is far better than the movie role. And she gives it more emotion than I've ever seen in this essential role. Who is the Maria standing at first immobile, then she grows into the moment, too. A perfect performance.

In the 90s she sang Vieni T’affretta in a production of Masterclass. She has serious operatic chops.
Her version of "If I Loved You" from Carousel is amazing as well.
Did show the film many times as a projectionist at a cinema, always goose flesh when the credits appear and that song
I live in Canada and when I saw her on a Xmas Special singing in New York, I so wished that I was there. I would have cried like a Baby if I heard her sing to me.

Fun Fact: Audra McDonald also plays the opera singing wardrobe from the live action Beauty and the Beast.
The only performance from this production that actually holds a candle to the film version. Nothing beats Peggy Lee on this song, but Audra McDonald does a pretty impressive job.

Peggy Wood singing voice is Margery McKay who actually dubbed her singing voice in the movie of The Sound of Music and years later on T.V. with Carrie Underwood, Audra McDonald actually sang Climb Every Mountain for the role of the Reverend Mother. To be perfectly honest I LOVED both versions of The Sound of Music 🎶🎵 mainly because I am a fan of The Sound of Music and to this VERY DAY I am in awe with all of the music from The Sound of Music.
This was the only incredible wonderful thing in Sound of Music live. The rest you can throw away, but this was shot out of the dark as this beautiful couple minutes and it's so moving how this performance gets Carrie Underwood to really feel something. It really was a incredibly special part of an entirely stupid thing.

Nobody needed to act in this scene, in the case of the actors who were not supposed to cry....in that case, whoever held back tears successfully through this is a fucking legend.

Audra MacDonald is a "no-brainer". Carrie Underwood should NOT have been cast in this production. I love Carrie but she was not right for this role.
The whole time watching this I thought, “why didn’t they cast her in South Pacific?” That show would have made so much more sense for her.
Audra’s performance saved this movie because up until she sang this song the whole movie was completely boring.
I remember watching the ads and wondering why Megan Hilty (who at the time was already working with NBC) wasn't picked instead, or even a new actress getting her big break.

@@naldawson7336 Race is not a big deal during theatre unless that’s the main focus of the story. (Saying this as someone who loves theatre and is black.) That’s like saying why isn’t the entire cast of Hamilton white?
1) WHILE I love Audra McDonald’s voice, it is wrong for this role. A more mature mezzo-soprano, like the original Patricia Neway is required.
2) Yes, it is a musical and not all ethnic requirements are maintained BUT an African American would not be heading up an abbey in Salzburg in the late ‘20s when the story actually took place or late ‘30s when the musical and film dramatization take place. And this is not a slight on McDonald’s considerable talent.

It’s unrealistic and damaging to choose not to hire actors of color today in the pursuit of some kind of historical accuracy.
Unless the part requires a certain race for the script, who even cares anymore? The cast always reflects the diversity of the country it is staged in (or lack thereof). If this were performed in Japan, they’d likely all be Japanese. I’d watch Audra play Maria as long as I got to hear her sing this music.
Besides, The Sound of Music is a ridiculous dramatization of the actual events. Let’s not pretend the story isn’t just Dad-lands-the-attractive-virginal-nanny, plus Nazis.
Nor would a nun break into song. Nor would a family of ten flee across the Alps when their passports allowed them to take a train to Italy. Just saying.
Wait a minute! Why is Audra McDonald, a black woman, playing a nun in pre-WWII Austria when there is no black nun? Never!
Look beyond the color of her skin and just listen to her voice. I am happy that production companies and Broadway are thinking beyond boundaries of being politically correct. Example: Hamilton. Kudos to Lin Manuel.

Audra plays Mother Superior because she's a 6-time Tony award winner and one of the best mezzo sopranos on the planet.
Strangely, you do not seem to have complained about the predominantly white cast playing the roles of brown people, from the middle east, in Joseph.
