  • DoDonPachi Resurrection (DaiFukkatsu) In-Depth Review - Nintendo Switch, Steam, Xbox 360. CAVE has arrived on Switch with its third release following Mushihimesama and Espgaluda 2 by Live Wire! In this video I not only give a review of the bullet hell shoot em' up (shmup) classic, Dodonpachi Resurrection, and how it performs on the Nintendo Switch with slowdown accuracy and input lag, but I also review the release as a whole. Discussing its level design, differences from earlier entries in the series, arrange modes, Black Label, and the absolute pile of content this release has to offer. In addition to being an amazing release for expereinced players, it's also a great release for beginners and new people looking to get into the genre. A true hidden gem for Nintendo Switch fans who may not normally get into shmups or bullet hell!

    It's actually $10 cheaper on Switch than it is on Steam, which makes its value even better. Though to be fair the Steam version has had many, many sales since its release.

      Really hope these switch releases do well so we get more.
      We need mushihimesama futari..dodonpachi dai ou jou... saidaioujou..
      and ketsui.

    Corrections:
    The stored autobomb for Power style is a thing in all modes, not just Arrange A.
    1.5 and BL are the main arcade versions and 1.51, while it did first appear as an arcade, was only available at events.
    Extra things I'd like to point out:
    In BL you can trade autobombs for interchangeable hypers and bombs, which is what BLA is based on.
    This port adds the option to fight Zatsuza in training mode, which was conspicuously missing from the previous two.
    Still, glad to see such a coverage of DFK!

    • @TheElectricUnderground
      @TheElectricUnderground  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yes for sure! Also yeah I could have gone into more detail on black label scoring but since the game is so well documented I thought giving an overall review of the mode would do :-)
      Also I did talk about the bombs being hypers in black label, I just mention it very quickly :-)

    Great review as always. I was looking forward on your take on this release. It took me some time to adjust to Resurrection's mechanical differences from the previous DDP games, as this is the only one that I hadn't played much prior to this release. After adjusting to the new focus on bullet cancelling I'm doing much better than I was at first. This is probably my least favorite DDP game, overall, but it's still a great shmup and certainly worthy of Cave's pedigree. I'm playing it in TATE mode on my Switch OLED with the Flip Grip, and it looks so good on that display.

    Great review with some great tips!, been wondering what you thought of this game!Saw that it made your top all time shmups list , but that was understandably brief.It's a great time for switch Cave fans at the moment. I have it on steam and dont own a switch,but you are right - there's a ridiculous amount of content in this package, literally years worth of investigation and discoveries of nuances and strategies, especially for an average player like myself who just likes to try survive as long as I can!

    • @TheElectricUnderground

      Yeah. Boss/midboss checkpoints would have been neat. On the flip side I got mushi, Galuda 2 and ddp dfk all for the price of the Esperade port (and in a language I can actually understand), so no real complaints there I guess.

      @@JustFun-ho6qy yeah, those $65 price tags on M2 Shottriggers releases are a bit steep, but I'll buy every one of them. Having said that, Live Wire is killing it with the 360 ports. No complaints.

    • @JustFun-ho6qy
      @JustFun-ho6qy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do think the M2 pricing is indeed too steep and they're not doing themselves any favors here. You're essentially paying a premium for what's essentially really solid emulation and a couple of extra tidbits here and there. I do really like Cave games, but I must admit I did feel bit of buyer's remorse after spending €50 on Esperade.

    As you pointed out, it is always the fear of having more slowdowns on the switch and that they are more pronounced and long than on the other versions (xbox 360, steam and Ps4). As much as the ports of Mushihimesama and Espgaluda 2 are in my opinion flawless (or almost), ESP Ra De sometimes gives me the impression that it slows down more on switch than on PS4, although the port is excellent too. The slowdowns in ESP Ra De are the big black spot in the game for me. While they sometimes help us get out of sticky situations, they often hurt us when we have to move quickly from one end of the screen to the other to destroy the ships that appear before they invade us. their presence and their bullets. In other words, they can cause us to fall behind in our travels.
    Note that most of the slowdowns seen on our living room media (PCs and consoles) were already present in the arcade. After that it is always difficult to know if they are identical or more numerous than in their original version, namely the arcade.
    Small aside, the steam version of Mushihimesama is slightly impacted by the tearing (especially at the beginning of the first levels) which is not present in the Switch version.
    By the way, I received the M2 version of Ketsui on PS4 and indeed as I expected it is by far the best version.

    • @TheElectricUnderground
      @TheElectricUnderground  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes for sure getting the slowdown accuracy just right is massive, it can make or break a port (like mushi on PS2). Live wire seem to be doing a solid job in this area and I am happy with their output so far!

      I removed the iOS port from my phone after I got the Switch version simply to save memories. The mobile port feels a bit different from the original game despite the graphics are very similar. Bullet cancel on some enemies are missing (like the big planes and laser towers in stage 4), making it seems to be more difficult than the original at times. Also the requirements of accessing Ura seems changed as I always fail at entering it.

I have to say that the mobile version smartphone mode is the absolute BEST version of dodonpachi resurrection in my opinion. The music is way more engaging and the hyper beam has an interesting mechanic where if you keep spinning it circles it charges up the hyper beam itself! The result is a mega blast of epic proportions. Going back to the arcade version just feels like a step backwards.

      @@main_tak_becus6689 Right, thats one way to go about it, ha ha. While Im not a 1 CC or shooter specialist I enjoy doing those type of challenge runs occasionally. I recently spent around 35 hours to complete Double Dragon Advance on Expert with 1 CC. Its very rare for me though. I take on extreme games and modes frequently but not so much no death or 1 CC's. Im more of a mass murderer when it comes to playthroughs. Huge variety of different type of games, frequent killings.
      1945 gets tough near the end. I made a tutorial with commentary on the game here:
      th-cam.com/video/furFxwrR-fY/w-d-xo.html
      You might find it entertaining at the least. It wasnt a 1 CC run, just beating the game but I found some good strats that could be used in a run like that.
      1945 2 is fuckin tough on the final stage. Still trying to beat that last stage. One word of warning. If you are playing on emulation avoid playing shooters like that through Saturn emulation. I realised late that the input lag was fucking me over majorly. It took me 6 hours to beat the final stage of 1945 on saturn. When I went over to the playstation emulator beat it within minutes. The input delay was making it mostly a position memorization game. Could hardly react.
      Same here, mostly. Games like R-Type , Gradius and shooters in that style are the ones Im real familiar with. The more bullet hellish aspects and hybrids of bullet curtain or just straight out bullet curtain games is all very new to me. Look forward to exploring that shit. Gives me a reason to mod these sticks, haha. Need something to use this shit for.

    You mention in your review that the "ideal" conditions for playing a game like this on Switch is to play on a CRT. I have no disagreements there, it's just that you hearing saying that makes me sad that there aren't any gaming hardware companies like BenQ, MSI, Viewsonic or Gigabyte that have launched any kind of budget CRTs aimed exclusively at the gaming community. I know that people on forums typically recommend looking for used CRTs, but I've done that and nobody has any good quality CRTs that they're willing to sell in my country in Southeast Asia. But even if I could find one, it'd be nice if I could get a brand new one instead of one that is likely all beaten up and requires repairs before it's usable.

    It's very Touhou-like (which I like, because I'm a Touhou fan) and has some very interesting and unique mechanics. And a very good soundtrack.
    I especially like the design of the bosses. They are no boring, generic tanks or warplanes like the previews games (or most shmups in general) and thanks to their voice lines, they have a little bit of personality.
    The only thing, I hate about this game, are *THIS GODDAMMED MOTHERFUCKING LASER WHEELS IN STAGE 5*. Whoever designed them, I hope, he will has nightmares. This section almost feels like a puzzle. Fortunally, in Arrange A, you can destroy them and in Black Lable, there are less (if I remember correct).

      Yes I felt the same way when I was practicing on steam as well. I'll probably be updating the pc port lag readings soon. Also good to know about the hyper rank! I assumed it was like doj and that it would increase just overall, very interesting actually.

      @@TheElectricUnderground My assumption is that its 4 frames on scuffed preset, 3 frames on your average preset and like 2(or maybe even less) on really optimized preset, since from testing ive done with input displaying software i can assume that lag in steam DFK can be boiled down to lag of your hardware+OS

      Bee Storm is made by IGS so there are people counted it out as mentioned in the video. It is really a decent shmup but I have to say the soundtrack is garbage. One big reason why it isn’t popular is Bee Storm has no console ports. The only way you could play Bee Storm today without using an emulator is getting an IGS Polygamemaster system and arcade cartridge. These old arcade cartridges usually have region locks so you need to be careful before making a purchase. Plus if one really dig into all the troubles to get a working Polygamemaster. Bee Storm wouldn’t be most people’s first choice when you can play like if DOJ, Ketsui, ESPGaluda on it. While for IGS games, their beat’em ups, side scrollings, fighting games, are just way better than their shmups. Really just all these reasons and factors making Bee Storm super forgettable.

    • @TheElectricUnderground
      @TheElectricUnderground  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bee storm is fun on it's own terms, but as compared to the rest of the series, no definitely a busted boy ha. Still really fun and worth a try!

    In my opinion the switch version has more input lag than the 360 Version, at least in TV mode with a Mayflash stick + it has some unintentional slowdowns (with hard to control speed ups after the slowdowns, unintentional to me means the slowdowns are different from the 360-version which I am used to). However, the port is still very good.

    • @TheElectricUnderground
      @TheElectricUnderground  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Here's a little extra information that I've learned about these ports regarding the slowdown accuracy. The 360 version has the most slowdown, while on release the PC version had slightly more, however Cave patched it to be more like the DFK PCB's slowdown. The Switch version is meant to be slightly more accurate again while keeping the PC versions palette, which was oversaturated on the 360. So, the 360 version is much more forgiving for new players, so they would probably prefer it if they have the choice.
