Yep - F1, etc has VERY clear reasons to qualify as fast as you can. We seem to want to make qualifying (and heat finish position) as irrelevant as possible...
@@MrBumbles2 there has always been qualifying to a point even in your local organization. That's how it works. In your local organizations. Gate pick goes by your championship points for the first Moto. The second moto gate pick goes by the position that you finished the last race in. It's the same damn thing as in the pro ranks. Don't change that that is earned. Go back to school...
Right. I think its smart to keep the slow guys (late gate picks) to the outside and the racey guys to the corner with half the traffic. It makes sense to me, but if eveyone gets a trophy, the Johnnys got the remedy.
And then when all those guys on the right cut over infront of the guys on left and cause massive crashes, everyone will complain. The gate is perfect how it’s set up and that is why qualifying and your heat races are important.
The starts are always designed to funnel everyone into the first turn. Honestly, the only way to negate the pinch point to a degree is to taper the start down in a straight line to track width. Example: Start is 50 yards before the apex of the first corner. Have the track funnel down to standard track width at 30 yards, giving the riders 20 yards before the turn to funnel in. Or decrease the angle of the first turn. Imagine a start where the first turn is 45° followed by a 180° second turn. Example: 50 yard start , with track width funneled down at 40 yards followed by a 45° turn, 20 yards 180° turn. Either way, you have more time for separation and positioning.
Honestly amazing how consistently basic the track designs are nowadays, I see no reason we shouldn't have staggered/slanted gate starts if were just going to have start cross every race
Because the start is angled in the holeshot will not come from the inside Johnny. If riders choose that inside gate then there is a high likelylood of what happened to Jett occuring. Instead the shorter router is a little closer to the starter box and it also forms and easier line in to that first corner. I think the holeshot could come from either side of the starter gate.
I think that the start is fine the way it is. If you angle the start, there will be more wrecks on the start and it naturally separates slower and faster riders.
The angled gate would change it up a bit . We all know the inside is shorter distance and the outside can be faster by speed entering . But the gates have been the same from the start of time .
This is the first video of yours I have watched. I have seen some shorts you have posted. I don’t know about you but I like how it is and hope they don’t change it. Even start. Even chance.
so the start grates are no good because it doesn't separate the riders leading to bigger pile ups or more first turn carnage, but at the same time you want to tilt the gate to make it more even?? wont that lead to the same issues or just exacerbate the issues the grates are leading to??
Ok so angle it so that absolutely everyone arrives to the first turn at the exact same time. Great idea. Timed qualifiers for gate pics would essentially be for nothing otherwise
I don't like how determinative the starts are in supercross. They are too congested and there's not enough time to make up for a bad one. There are too many wrecks that take the top guys out.
they should try off cambering the inside section of the 90 degree corners in order to promote multiple racing line. or use harder packed dirt. something to make that standard outside-inside-outside standard inside line a bit more risky in terms of carrying speed.
Johnny i get what your saying about the start, my issue with that is the separation its congestied enough now hitting the first corner and 9 times out 10 we see someones night or season ruined off that start in particular. Id like to see the stats of crashes in whoops to crashes off the gate since the metal grate deal hmmmm more whoops no grates ideal. Take startcross away and let them race with skills. Or are we destined to become boring like Moto GP where one factory has such a technological edge other brands cant compete and have a grid full of one colour.....

Bring back Camel Supercross racing. Life isn't fair, you want that good starting position, work for it in qualifying. Otherwise, good points on the rest of the track rundown.
Angle start gate 🤯. It's so simple and so stupid that no one has thought of this 🤦♂️ You just solved 100% of the problem. Now get rid of metal gates and heat winners can choose the best rut.
I do not see sexton winning maybe Jett after being pisst about the last race.very interested to see what Eli does. I would love to see Tomac then Kenny, Q and Anderson and maybe Prado wrap up top 5 and Jett at 12Th again
Think you’ll see guys in the section before finish triple, use first table to jump onto second then step off and hit finish if the table over table is too slow because of leaving a single after the fact. Possibly?
9 whoops what a joke. I remember when tracks had 2 whoop sections of 10-13. It separated the chumps from the pros. Anyone at this level can pin it and fly.
Fair?! What do you think qualifying is for... Also, i think you're wrong about gate pick holeshot. Mid left gates will have the advantage. They can carry their speed throughout the wide 180. Inside left will have to break sooner than anyone else.
Johnny are you saying they should alter the gate to create the same distance to the corner for everyone? If so, then it only compounds the issue of less separation and increases even more the probability of first corner pile-ups. It also negates the point of qualifying and heat races…..
Look at those funky doubles!? They are almost tables but are not as filled in as a table. Idk what those double/ tables are but I don’t like em. Bring back linger whoops and dragons backs.
It is safer for riders to get best gate picks from inside. Usually fast riders can start too, so slower guys go to outside. Otherwise they would get trapped on the inside with bad starts. Now they come from outside when its their time after others
Actually an angled starting gate could be great. Top qualifier still picks his spot and instead of pointing straight point towards the first turn Apex. Adjustment will have to be made of course.
I have a serious question, what is the difference between todays tracks and say 2010? Todays tracks seem totally one lined. How can that be changed? What was different 10 or 15 years ago? If you could design a track, how would you do it?
I dont necessarly agree with the whole start gate thing, i think the way it is is perfect, if you made it "fair" or equal to everybody there there is no real incentive for riders to push their qualifying time other than to just make the night show. If you are the fastest guy on the track you should be rewarded for it, which is the way it is now.
not a great track. i think A2 and glendale will make for MUCH better racing. this is a startcross track, unfort. the only good thing is, after the finish, wall jump, then fast 180 to 180 that will be fast.
Also you can’t line 22 guys up that funnel down to a track width of 12-15 feet with a 180 corner and make it the same distance no matter what you do. It’s mathematically impossible
Does it need to be more fair?? Do guys who regularly finish in the bottom 5 and get lapped every race really need to be entering the first turn at the same exact time as the guys who will be lapping them? i say angle the gate back the other way so we don't have bottom 5 guys going Bar to bar with Tomac and Jet so they can feel like heroes for 5 seconds.
tomac will get it done , jett then sexton. with the better design straight and first corner , its not going to choke up as many big names like last week did .
Eli's coming...🏁
I like it! Probably not too many people know that song...

Rumor has it that they might saturate the triple before the sand section with coal oil set it ablaze turning it into a fire section. 🔥
Probably not funny but I can dream can't I ?
Hell yea fairness for everyone!!!!! Give everyone a trophy too!
Come on man , coal oil? California? It'll have to be an old Tesla battery!
@davemacpherson3830 yes maybe a battery, of old EV batteries. 🤷 It was just a joke and probably a bad one at that no disrespect just pokin fun
All jokes aside...... but visually how fucken cool would that look
Angling the Gate is exactly what I thought about too after last week with the split start. If you were on the outside half you were screwed.
well then no qualifing then no need if distance is the same. sorry no free trophies for everyone
Bingo! Its hard for all these guys who support participation trophies to understand logic in competition.
@buckydoedowner9040 good point!

The angle of the dangle😅 would just be less separation.

I do agree about the starting line being angled. That is a great idea.!
So why even bother qualifying?
And why not make it a 20m start straight so the first turn clusterf%ck is even more!
That section before the finish, couldn’t they triple, then triple onto the second step off, then double, then finish jump?

Great idea on angling the start Johnny.. Lets make qualifying pointless and an even bigger cluster fk in the first turn. Hahaha WTF?
yep dumbing it down , i hate this include everyone bs , its a sport there's losers or winners for a reason

No
I digress....😂😂😂😂
very interesting track and raises big question what these guys are bound to show us this weekend.
I think closer to the middle, less braking.
Mathematically, you can enter the turn at a higher speed from the outside

Meh I’m ready for outdoors. The modern 450s are get a start and maintain.
They need to start making the track thicker of dirt so it doesn’t get down to the plywood or the concrete a.k.a. Eli
He didn't get down to the concrete floor he hit a rock.
Very good point
