    This was so cool to watch! The ladies did a great job with trying food they have never had before. Pete you are such a supportive host:) I can't wait to see your reaction to the next food review.

    Thai women love to eat, many times a day! Like the lady with tattoos, quite a looker Pete!

      That’s why their portions are traditionally much smaller than in the states and I love that! Just gonna eat again in 3 hours so better not eat too much now lol
      Ping Pong is a beautiful person inside and out. We’ve been friends for many months now. 😊

    I found it very strange that these Thai women were hesitant in trying Indian food because many Thai dishes were influenced by India such as many Thai curries and roti. I overheard some of the ladies saying that Indian food reminded them of food from the south of Thailand in the Muslim areas.

    • @peteonretreat2023

      It comes down to a lack of knowledge and as you can see in the video, I failed to make the curry connection myself until they mentioned the similarities. You have to understand these ladies grew up in small villages until their 20s and really only ate Issan food before moving to the city. Even some Thai food was completely foreign to them before the move.
      They may know very little of the history of their foods as well. I went to MK (a restaurant in the mall) with a couple last month. It’s a Suki place where you cook your own food in an electric pot of broth at your table. I asked them what country it’s from and they didn’t know. Turns out Suki is a Thai creation 3 decades old and a take on a Chinese steamboat dish.

    Love Indian food. My favorite is curry chicken , flat bread ( rodies) I probably spelled that wrong. :) Good video. Keep having fun.

      Yes, it’s spelled roti… delicious! 😋

    I used to live in India and love Indian food. From remarks here, it seems Indian food is expensive compared to Thai, but is it expensive compared to UK/US food in Pattaya? For example ,would a Sunday roast dinner cost more than garlic naan, garlic rice and lamb vindaloo? (Obviously star rating of restaurant plays a part but for equal restaurants is Indian cheaper than UK?)

    • @peteonretreat2023
      @peteonretreat2023  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’d say it’s on par with all foreign food for the most part. You can get a cheap Indian lunch for 200 baht in some places (I think even cheaper in the “Indian ward” in south Pattaya city but I haven’t eaten there yet. You can also spend 500 baht on a good Indian meal but that’s probably the price for a good English roast as well. Our Christmas dinner was 1,000 baht.
      Indian food is definitely cheaper here than in the states. I believe this entire table of food and drinks was under 1,500 baht ($45 usd) but it’s been a month now and I don’t exactly remember.

    I think the girl that didn't speak English said she accepted because you're handsome (lawh) but that's the only word I picked up, so not sure! And then you said they were curious and the "translator" said yes...

    Like you said in the caption towards the beginning of the video, you were surprised that many Thai people that you know ONLY eat Thai food.
    I'm not as surprised anymore.
    However, what is somewhat baffling, is many Thai ladies in these tourist areas spend ALOT of time around and are exposed to foreign men, so how can they not be curious, and at least want to try other foods?
    At least people in the rural areas and villages have the excuse of lack of interactions with foreigners.
    Entertaining and interesting video!👍

    • @peteonretreat2023
      @peteonretreat2023  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some of them are curious and it probably grows the longer they’re here but since they lived in the villages until they were adults, I kinda get the lack of curiosity with food or their fear and hesitation trying some of them. Trying new things just wasn’t part of their life. Their limitly developed palettes may also cause new flavors be met with confusion and this could put them off from trying other things afterwards. I know many that just generally don’t like chocolate or ice cream.
      Talking with Ping Ping more, she said absolutely no at first to Indian food but then after the subject was brought up she began to do some research. She looked at Tik Tok and asked other foreigners if they liked Indian food. After hearing many good things (and seeing my channel lol) she said yes.

    I've taken a few Thai girls for Indians over the years, including the owner of a Thai restaurant. None of them were won over, which is a shame. I did have a Thai girlfriend in Udon Thani who loved steak, totally off subject. No harm to Thais, I love them, but the really don't like venturing outside the Thai experience, whatever that is. That having been said, in the old days when I lived in the UK, people would go to Spain for holidays and only want to eat British food and wouldn't even try the Spannish food, so I guess it's down to the individual and there willingness to explore.

    • @peteonretreat2023

      Even after the two ladies told some mutual friends they liked several dishes, our other friends still don’t want to even try it.
      Yes, I took a good amount of food home. I was surprised how much they did eat though. We were there for about an hour and they about finished the 2 chicken dishes and the aloo gobi.
      I had told them before there was no pressure to eat a lot and that I’d be happy to take any leftovers. It was my first Indian food breakfast the next morning and I ate way too much lol.

    Good job Pete! Brave of you to bring one girl who did not want to eat Indian food at all! 555 I am not very familiar with Indian food, had it a couple times with a vegetarian friend. As you say, many different spices, though of course curry is common in both Thai and Indian foods. I prefer Thai food also, mainly because I like the simplicity, spicyness, and I know what I am getting most times. And to be honest, the price of Thai food cannot be beat.

    • @peteonretreat2023
      @peteonretreat2023  ปีที่แล้ว

      My guess is the prices would be reversed in India lol. With how much Indian food there is in the south part of the city I’m a bit surprised it isn’t cheaper here. I’d thought competition would drive prices down but they seem pretty steady. Local Thai food is definitely the more affordable option here.
      And Pan really was there only to translate. If Ping and Dow didn’t like the food as much as they did, Pan definitely would not have tried anything. I just wanted her there so I could talk with the others better and not rely on google translate.

    The food looked so good. It was such a tragic ending. So much uneaten tasty food. Ought to be a food crime. The reluctant one looked like she was going to spit the food into her napkin on the first bite. The amount of cultural bias in food tastes is amazing. It was a great anthropology experiment. The palpable apprehension over eating some veggies and sauce that have like a dozen or more spices mixed into it shows the nature of training the palate as a child to see something as food and desirable to eat. I noticed the naan went over without question.

    • @peteonretreat2023
      @peteonretreat2023  ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, I love your insight on this. Some clarifications… no food went to waste as I took home all the leftovers. Just one of the things I said in the shoot but cut for time. I was very clear with the ladies that was no pressure to do more than try everything. They ended up eating a lot more than I expected and we ate for about an hour.
      I’m still surprised Pan even tried the food. It’s funny because the first dish she tried reminded them all of masaman… but even though that’s Thai food Pan really doesn’t like it. Being from Issan, their diet is quite a bit different than traditional Thai food (as you’ll see next week). She did seem to like the butter chicken and the aloo gobi but I think the cultural bias still didn’t allow her to actually admit it.
      I do have to say they all see food desirably… just not “new” food. All 3 of them only had local village food until they were 20 or so. They LOVE to go eat. I think Indian food is the scariest for them culturally as it gets. My friend’s wife is Thai. She’s lived in the states for years and still won’t try Indian food even though her husband likes it.
      The Naan is funny because it was met with mixed feedback too (but cut for time). Ping much preferred the garlic but Dow only liked the plain. Another thing cut for time was us talking about bread… the Thai people don’t have their own bread. It’s just not a thing they ever did. No Chinese style bao buns, no pastries… pasta is as close as they came so all bread is foreign food here.

    Obviously a lot of trust, that they would try the food. i love the tiny, tiny tastes they take at the beginning though they do wind up taking whole spoonfuls by the end. So fun to watch.

    • @peteonretreat2023
      @peteonretreat2023  ปีที่แล้ว

      Those tiny bites… yes, they were very hesitant. I think the only trust was that they knew they could stop at anytime lol. I never said they would like any of it, I honestly didn’t know if they would or not.

    A Thai girl who says " I like a little bit of garlic" means she eat whole cloves and liking it. Trust me.

    • @peteonretreat2023
      @peteonretreat2023  ปีที่แล้ว

      Dow didn’t like the garlic naan but did like the plain so it’s not universal but yes, most of them do and I love order Thai garlic dishes… so much garlic!
      Tbf, this restaurant really doesn’t have good naan. It’s very thin and crispy.
