There are three best "behind the scenes" ever, for me: "Conan the Barbarian", "Predator" and "Aliens" being first for being such a masterclass in film making.
After all these years I still can't believe how amazing these two Alien movies are. I would argue they are perfect, if such a thing can be said. Simple premise, masterful execution. No CGI, aging like wine. And the Xenomorphs of course are the most terrifying thing ever...disturbingly plausible. In a masochistic way, we are blessed to have grown up with these things :D
Top 5 Colonial Marines: 1. Hicks "Marines, we are LEAVING!" 2. Vasquez "Let's rock" 3. Hudson "Game over man!" 4. Apone "Look into my eye" 5. Drake - he's just a badass.
I wish you guys could appreciate the extra drama and depth and power in the Special Edition. When Newt calls Ripley, "Mommy" after everything theyve just been through, its so much more rewarding. For Ripley, this experience was about second chances and Newt was one of those opportunities to take back what shed lost.
Two things: 1) The James Horner score goes so well with this movie. 2) I think the crash sequence with the first drop ship is the real corner turn for Aliens. The folks planet-side lose their ride offworld, _and_ we get Hudson’s money line.
Amazing score, it is absolutely one of the essential parts of why this film is amazing. I love that as I grow older I'm learning to appreciate films on a deeper level - the score is one of the big ones for me, even as a non-musician myself. Now I'm enough of a geek for it that I seek out films based on who composed the score.
Not only did I watch both of these (without falling asleep!), I'm looking forward to your treatment of "The Abyss." Make it three parts, I DGAF. I *ADORE* that movie! "Luck is not a factor."
The one allowed franchise inclusion with Alien or Aliens is the game Alien Isolation which is fanfickingtastic. Can't recommend enough for horror game fans.
Left? I could do three more hours. Aliens is possibly my favorite film. It's definitely in the top ten. I know it by heart and never get tired of it. Thanks for this, guys. Keep it going!
Wes was wrong. Ripley fires the flamer *above* the eggs to show the queen what she can do, then points the flamer at an egg. She doesn't actually burn any eggs until one opens and she torches them all
I was here at the end and I was engaged the whole time. I love Aliens as much as you guys do, and I love listening to you talk about movies, so I can't imagine a better way to spend 3 hours of free time.
Ty keeps saying "egg laying apparatus" but I happen to be aware that it's called an _ovipositor_ since I coincidentally saw that in a video about grasshoppers recently. I am beside myself with pride because I knew something Ty didn't, if only for a moment.
hope I'm not repeating other posts, but I was surprised that they didn't mention / cover the automatic sentry guns, one of my favorite parts! Also I didn't see them cover the alien attack in the 1st shuttle craft coming down that crashes 'We're in the pipe, five by five.'
The dropship pilot was Cpl. Ferro, and Pvt. Spunkmeyer was the crew chief. Ferro was also badass and went down fighting; when the xenomorph entered the cockpit, Ferro, instead of panicking, attempted to draw her sidearm and fight but wasn't fast enough. Just little scenes like that, only a few seconds of a character in her final moments, that make you love these characters and get an emotional reaction when they die, are reasons why this movie is amazing.
I always thought Ferro was going for an ejector seat, but I don't know if that would be a thing and anyway, as you say, going for a sidearm works too. A great wee scene though.
Isn't it funny that to the uninitiated 'facehugger' sounds like something cute and fluffy, while for us it's one of the scariest things in the universe? ;)
My favorite movie of all time. Just watched the theatrical edition again tonight thanks to you guys! Haven't watched it in so many years becase I always watch the Special edition. It's so tight, one of the best movies ever made!
Weyland-Yutani is a stereotypical cyberpunk world type corporation, similar to Tyrell Corp. in Bladerunner. Which is another reason why the Alien films are such 80s classics; besides being great sci fi horror and action films, they are also cyberpunk films.
@@RCAvhstapeI don't think Aliens is cyberpunk, neither the cyber or the punk is present, if it was Burke and the Marines aka The Man would have been told to frag off from the get go and there would at the very least have been a prosthetic.
@@CanadianWolverine iI's not a cyberpunk story, but it's set in a cyberpunk setting. There's even speculation that Alien and Bladerunner are in the same universe.
To me, I feel like you skipped over the best part of the movie’s “false finale”. That moment after Ripley tells Bishop “you did good”, you get a two-second shot of acid eating through the floor, which is JUST long enough for the audience to go “OH SHIT!” before the queen strikes
This podcast has become my movie-night planning tool because every time it's either a movie that I'm like, "ooh I haven't seen that in years," or, "ooh I need to watch that with my kids." Regarding Aliens, do you guys know the story of the score? James Horner had to write it in a couple of weeks, some cues overnight before recording, because Cameron wouldn't get him a picture-lock, and even once he had one Cameron kept changing the edit. Horner swore he'd never work with Cameron again, and it wasn't until Titanic when Cameron really thought Horner would be perfect (and I guess asked nicely) that they worked together again. And I guess that worked out okay for them both.
I just wanna say that I love this podcast so much. The two of you's love for cinema and storytelling is so much fun and almost reaffirming to listen to. Jaws and Alien are two movies I think are honestly perfect movies, I have a lot of love for Aliens as well, it's a thriller and amazing how it came together in such a rock n roll ride of a movie. I just been going back on your start with the season 5 amazon shit with ty and that guy going through that season and just wanted to say, I have probably spent a decent amount of hours watching you two talk as much as I have watched The Expanse, and that's no diss to the Expanse, it's just fun to hear people talk about the craft of stories and bringing them to life for people. From Dark Star and showing love to Ray Bradbury's early sci-fi writing, to the shit we get today, The Expanse, Black Mirror, The Last of US and more. Peace and blessings to you and yours and to whatever you do in the future, you are both a gift to storytelling and have an alright podcast with 8 or so listeners.
Great commentary guys. Can't believe you skipped the Game Over man/mostly come at night scene after the Dropship crashes, but I guess they have been memed to death. Let's hope Romulus can get the series back on an evening keel.
I have to correct them, the facility wasn't going to explode because of them firing their weapons, it was going to happen because the dropship crashed and exploded into the processor. Anyway I could listen to them talk about movies for hours, both have a good chemistry.
It would have to be direct by James Cameron but a prequel to Aliens could center around the fall colony which ends with Newt realizing she’s the lone survivor.
to be fair....the damage of the heat exchanger could have come from the initial explosion of that bag of ammo. but yeah that initial burst by vasquez could have done something..but after that she and drake are firing bursts where they see targets. those targets also are bleeding all over the place and melting stuff..so there is that. None of them were told what was there..just not to shoot....they were kinda professional...wonder if they had known why they were told not to shoot if they would have chosen better when firing depending on the backdrop of their target.

He was also in several episodes of the short-lived show The Dresden Files, playing Harry Dresden's evil uncle Justin Morningway. I'd guess his name on The Expanse was an obscure shout-out to that.
Please tell me that Ty and Wes know that the theme that plays at the end of Die Hard when Powell saves McClain was originally made for the final scene of Alien when Ripley spaces the Queen
Btw, I know Ty plays videogames, but I never heard him talking about Dead Space. I'm sure he did. Be interesting to know what he thinks of it. That's a great survival (and Carpenter loves it as well).

My brother watched his copy of Aliens Special Edition (gifted to him by our parents for his 12th birthday 😆), every single day after school, so i know this movie VERY well.
