I've been teaching almost 10 years here (Ho Chi Minh city). 1- 25 hours + PREPARATION 2- the suburb (25 min by bus) of HCMC is sometimes10 times less polluted than the city center (I use Air Matters app) 3- If you have a university degree in education your salary starts at $3000/month + flight tickets etc . 4 - Native speakers - lol - Smaller language schools will hire almost anyone who speaks a decent English but at $15/hr (lot of teachers from the Philippines, Ukraine, etc). If you go outside the biggest cities it's even easier and the cost of life is lower. There is a big market for kindergartens in big cities 5- In language schools you may have a lesson at 7:30am and the next one at 10:00am and the next one at 4:00pm and the next one at 8:00pm. At language schools you'll mainly teach evenings and weekends. The best is to teach Mon to Fri 8 to 5 at big private schools (elementary schools & high schools)

I have been to Asia many times. I love it. I am not a teacher though. $20 per hour over there is a ton of money. A very livable wage. You will also get the respect and appreciation that a teacher deserves. Also I find that life is much safer in Asia. Very little crime.
Much less crime in most places outside the USA. LOL
Hell I work nearly 60 hours a week in the US just to keep a roof over my head and food in my fridge. Gods this looks amazing!

@Diggy d Denver isn't really pricey....... you can't rent a room in most of the places I have lived for that price range. Denver is generally seen is a haven for tech workers where I come from because its tech scene is getting stronger but its cost of living is still very low.
As long you don't do terrible things like being drunk in a public place or doing drugs, you as teachers will be just fine because the Vietnamese have huge respect for teachers. Don't ask me why. It's just their tradition and culture.

I was recently in Vietnam and travelled to Ho Chi Minh, Danang, Hoi An & Natrang and my observation as tourist was that the areas differ quite a lot and the different cities cater for different types of tourists. The town that I felt the most comfortable in was Hoi An, as there were much more English speaking tourists around. The locals were also much more friendly, open and receiptive and generally had a better command of English. If I was to teach English in Vietnam, I would rather consider Hoi An to be honest.

if those tats are conceivable, nobody really cares. but if it extends to neck and your hands where its visible, then yeah. for asians, tats are somewhat disgusting. a public show of who you are is a sign of weakness for them. they uphold humility.
not saying that people with tats are bad by any means. but thats why they dont . its culture difference. at least, the idea they have is that people with tats are usually bad people at some point in life.

Man... I'm contracted to do 36 hours a week in China. But that doesn't include training, meeting, workshop and interviews. Some weeks I'll work the 36, others I'll do close to 50. Despite the high salary, the cost of living is going up a lot here. Feel more burned out every week. Vietnam seems far more relaxed. Thanks for the video :)

An important thing to point out is Alex is talking about Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi. These are big, noisy, polluted cities (the negatives). If you want to live somewhere that doesn't have a gazillion bikes and is a concrete jungle you'll probably end up in a smaller city, where the hours are fewer and the pay is less. The trade off is the better living conditions and fresh air.

I've been in Vietnam to and from for almost 30 years. I also do recommend try smaller cities or towns. 20-30 years ago Saigon also had a more relaxed atmosphere. Now it's more like any other big Asian city.

Just to add to that bit at 14:30, what makes a huge difference, I think, is how much of the curriculum has already been designed and planned and you basically just have to follow that, and throw in your own activities on top. On the other hand, some places without much material available might have you planning more. So 10 - 60 minutes is an accurate number.
Respecting Teacher from Vietnamese students is a Big bonus. They really celebrate Teachers Day over there !.

The hardest thing for the Vietnamese, is trying to learn English from all the people coming to Vietnam, to teach English, with heavy accents and broken English themselves. People from India for example, or any other person that can not use proper diction. For example: this gentleman say (you) like it is spelled eww. Not trying to down this guy, it's something to think about before you try to come and teach. Vietnamese are not dumb, they will soon learn that you are not teaching with the proper pronunciation and spread the word that you are not good. Good Luck!

Hi Alex, great concise, honest videos. I have TEFL and teaching experience. I was hoping to move out at the end of September, is it realistic to expect to find work in my first week? Are you contractually bound to jobs, apartments? Would you suggest just booking a flight and beginning to look as soon as I arrive?
Hi Alex, Big fan of the videos, super informative and helpful! I'm moving out to Ho Chi Min City in September to hopefully teach for at least 6 months. I don't have any TEFL qualifications but I do have a degree in Science/ experience working with children in Europe and the US. Do you think it's possible for me to obtain teaching work without a TEFL qualification?

Chuck. You'll need to know how to construct a lesson plan/s. A tefl qual will help.
I don't like to make generalized statements because inevitably someone chimes in with that one counter example... But generally speaking, schools are far less likely to consider you if you don't have a TEFL. I'd look into doing a 4 week fully in-person training.

HI, Alex. Would you mind telling me where the best place to find the TEFL in-person training classes are? The only options I seem to find in my searching are the TEFL academies, but there are only a few in North America and a handful in other countries. The closest one to me is in New York and thats nearly a 10 hour drive from me. There are options to gain a certificate at some community colleges here but their requirements state you must have a bachelors degree first. I am just having trouble locating where you find in-person training for these things that isn't states away. I would greatly appreciate your help, thanks.
It's going to be an uphill battle to get hired without certs. I teach medical terminology and NCLEX prep and have worked the field for decades as a RN/EMT-P; yet it took a year to land a job. If you have a degree in Biological Sciences, I'm sure you more than qualified to teach basic human anatomy and physiology, it is a niche market and the salary will reflect that.
God i work 50 to 72 hours a week in the states at a factory. Only working 15 hours a week and still survive sounds like a dream life. lol

I've been teaching the British curriculum for 7 years. I'm currently teaching Dubai but considering relocating to Vietnam! Anyone else in a similar position?
When 25 hours/week is working a lot haha. You know you've found the place you need to be. Damn, I worked at a car wash for 3 years in 33 degree cold and 100+ heat 30-40 hours a week. Vietnam would be awesome.
Couple of comments from someone who has been here for several years now. Netting anything over $20 USD is extremely rare unless you have a full teaching license from an English speaking country and even in that case you would still need to be employed by an international school. I would say even quite getting to the 20 USD is fairly rare since you will be paid in local currency and will usually either be paid at a rate that is slightly lower or you will owe taxes when working for a more legitimate outfit. You can figure about $18 USD if you are a native speaker. You will be paid only for the time you are literally talking to students. Any breaktime at a public school, a period off in between because the school is having an event, prep time at a center, making student comments, preparing tests etc will be unpaid. There may be significant travel time in your day which you will not be compensated for either, and if you are an unlicensed driver it would behoove you to have some bribe money on you. The majority of foreigners here will be barely getting by or older wealthy foreigners who have a pension and wish to supplement it. Some schools are fine with older teachers, and others aren't, that seems to be a personal taste, but you should have a good degree of energy regardless of age. Vietnam is a place to come because you like tropical weather and a different lifestyle, not to save up money. Since things come up, I would say roughly 400 USD a month is a pretty realistic figure for someone who isn't into a lot of drinking, clubbing or dating. Obviously with the coronavirus probably most teachers will have saved nothing or close to it this year, but in a normal year 5k is realistic. I wouldn't say it is easy because to get by on 1k a month probably means going without the latest fashions, western restaurants (except once in awhile) not buying the latest electronic gadgets etc. If you like to be dressed to the nines in designer wear, have a new motorbike to impress the ladies, the latest ipad and iphone, that 1500 can go quickly. If you were Vietnamese you would probably eat less, live with your parents, know cheaper sources of shoes/clothing and make that salary stretch a lot farther. As a foreigner you can save, but it really isn't the country to do it. I would suck it up in China somewhere for awhile and then go to Vietnam after some visits and you find it is to your liking.
Hi Alex - absolutely loved this video. I've been thinking about moving to Vietnam to teach English for the longest time and your videos have covered many questions that have come to mind. A bit about me - I've got 5 years of full time teaching experience in Hong Kong, a Bachelor's degree and I speak fluent American English. As an Asian guy, is it still possible to land a teaching job in Vietnam? Or are they keen on only hiring Caucasian teachers? Also, I haven't got a TEFL degree - though hope the years of experience will make up for it? Last question - what would one require to teach in international schools in Vietnam? Hey Hannah. It depends but usually we recommend getting employment after arriving. That way you can check out the school in person.
Also, if this is for HCMC or Hanoi, that's a little low on salary for that number of hours - see the part in the video where I break down how much you could be earning hourly. Sounds about right for a job in the provinces.

25 hour teaching a week means you will have no time to do anything because you have to prepare the lessons and that can take so many hours. It is not that rosy down here.

The schools that require weekday afternoon/night and weekends are "training schools". they're absolute hell, and I would never recommend them. Parents are overly picky, not enough classroom material, and they almost always try to take advantage of you... be very careful about choosing schools!
Two very different styles of 'teaching'. Depends on what you want. I prefer language training centers. Get in, get out, get paid. No benefits and risk of being taken advantage of may be higher, but it's simpler. Less invested. Working at a high school? with semesters, parents, "office hours", extracurricular (required) activities. Just two very different modes of teaching.
Good information. BTW, if you have face detection focus on your camera it might do a better job holding focus on your face rather than the background.

30 hrs per week is a pretty full work load? Americans are used to working 40-50 hrs per week and that's just considered normal. I have worked 86hr weeks before. I would love to be able to work 20hrs a week....
You have to factor in lesson planning and travel time too. But yeah, it's a pretty good gig work hours wise.
Being a teacher myself in vietnam, the issue is the lesson plan. First year teachers normally spend the same or even more on lesson plans.
Regarding comments on lesson planning, isn't there a simple way to buy lesson plans? seems very inefficient to have every teacher preparing plans.

I will be new to teaching (not new to working) so i will prefer to leverage off the skills of experienced lesson planners and focus on the presentaion to start (plus save time). agree with your comments though :)

A long term goal of mine, I.E, in 5 year is to be teaching in either Vietnam or Cambodia. I am at uni and have 2 years left of a primary teaching degree, I want to then teach for 2-3 years in Australia first as to have a solid base to come back to if I end up not loving as much as I think I will. I have travelled to aboriginal and Vietnam before and absolutely loved it, but always need a back up plan.
How much could I expect to earn with an Australian teach degree and teaching experience?
Sounds like a good plan. The market is in flux at the moment so we will see how rates stabilize but they should still be in this range hopefully.

GIGO ! When one cannot get a job in the States due to lower academic status ( Low GPA, low skill in the job interview, no credential...etc.) , It's a great idea to get out of the States where the competition for a high paid job is a big challenge to a third world country to self sustain.

Hi Alex, can you plan the lesson at home prior to getting to your school and then just get paid for the hours you are actually at your school. Say you have an evening from 4pm -8pm do you typically get paid 4 hours or will it work differently? Do you get paid for the class planning?
I saved $8500 per month in 6 months working at a public school in Korea. I feel like for me, it was important to bring as much home "to the real world" as possible. Its hard to bring an asian salary back to America... But its true the experience is totally worth it. It's kind of hard though when one is in the prime working years of their lives... still that is when it is the most fun. The other option is you can just leave for good and stay in Vietnam or Asia... Then the money transfer back won't matter...

According to English-teaching-in-South-Korea, a public school English teacher's salary ranges from $1,200 - 2,500 per month, and a university English teacher's salary ranges from $2,000 - 3,000 per month. After all the expenses, an English teacher in South Korea can save about $500 per month or $3,000 for 6 months. How on earth can you save $8,500 per month in Korea? Have you robbed a bank for that $$$?

My nephew was robbed of all his money in Vietnam. Got a job teaching English the next day for US$13.00 per hour cash paid daily. The first question was "When can you start"? This was 4 years ago. Within no time he had plenty of money and decided to stay for 3 months. Every day the owner of the school asked him "Are you coming back tomorrow"? He had NO TEFL or Degree in English. He was an American and White. That's all he needed!

Thailand you're looking at around $700 - $1000 a month teaching about 25 hours.

Hey Alex, sorry if you had mentioned this in the Video and i might have missed it, but do you need a Degree to be able to teach? Also hows the market for other languages like German? I grew up in Germany. Oh and how are Vietnamese`s attitute torwards viet kieus like me? Do you happen to know how they are treated as teachers? Ive watched Videos of Korean Americans going to Korea to teach and they had racist experiences.
Personally the last time I was there, I had the Impression they think im rich just because I live abroad. Also that one employee at the Airport kept talkng to me in english although i talked english to her. so im a little concerned.

In Vietnam, you will most probably get a job if you are white, even if your grammar and spelling are horrible and will get the full benefits if you come from an English speaking country. Korea and Japan are now more open to other ethnicities because they have been in this ESL business longer than Vietnam and have realised that being good at teaching English has nothing to do with skin color.

I've heard that some countries will pay for your residency if you teach there. But it seems that Vietnam doesn't do that.
Living expenses is way cheaper then $1000 month. I pay $1000 rent a nice room here Australian a month near the city.

Thomas H I've spent quite a bit of time in SE Asia. it was very easy to medicine and antibiotics and cheaper than the west. I never had to go to a hospital but I've heard the healthcare is cheap and a good service

@@mattd3826 Wow I totally missed this.. I've been back 3 years now! You can apply for something and have them sort out all the legal documents, or get a "business visa" and come here and quickly get a ton of work via Facebook groups advertising teaching jobs. The latter is the norm here, really, and the powers that be generally turn the other cheek, especially if you live in the main "foreigner neighborhood", Tay Ho.
As you say, a lot of additional time is spent lesson planning. That being said, is it feasible to take on say two 15-20 hour positions simultaneously? Will schools consider that as an option?
Nat R legally that probably isn’t possible but in Vietnam the law is disregarded on a hourly basis

Is working 20-30 hours a week considered a lot in Vietnam or is that just forthis particular job? I work 50-80 a week right now in my warehouse. 20-30 seems like nothing.

Do you have to be proficient at Vietnamese ? Is there an age limit ? Like could a 45 year old do this and get hired or is that too old ?
So, you can live conservatively and be able to put back around $500 (+-$100) working 80 to 100 hrs per month. If you are young and your student loan payments are under $150 per month, I can see doing this for a year or so for experience abroad in a country whose culture and system of govt is different. But, always have an exit plan.
So how much money do we need to go over there with to account for the indifferences in hours we get?

What's the private English business like there? For example, I charge about 70USD per hour in S. Korea. Obviously way more than you'd ever make in an academy. Granted I know I charge a lot, but I've been here 20 years and have built a reputation. I don't think asking 50USD would be out of the question for someone just starting out.
You would be lucky to make have that. And then it would be dependent upon who you know.
I was always under the impression that salaries in Vietnam are higher than Thailand but I earn way more than what you said working in Thailand.
