That failure is like I have never seen. You have had good luck with these Predator engines so you should be just fine with this unit. A bit of tinkering and you will be back in service.

Put one on my OLD Snapper aluminum deck mower, cranks up FIRST pull, I just took a plastic tie & pulled the throttle arm to mid point

i would recommend is finding a cast iron flywheel from a Honda GXV 160 engine as these are honda clone blocks. as normally these have alunimum flywheels. as a Log splitter, pressure washer, snow thrower single stage and other belt driven applications require a heavy flywheel. if not when starting this engine cold it kicks back and can rip the starter handle out of your hand as i hurted my left arm when i swapped one on a pressure washer. as cast iron flywheels for a Honda Gxv 160 or 170 find them online and a starter cup.
these engines are normally set up for rotary lawn mower applications as the blade is the flywheel. as others use a honda Gxv 160 heavy cast iron flywheel

POSTED 2/2022 WHEN or IF these engines are going to be back in stock??? A few months ago I searched ALL over Florida for some could find NONE, still NONE, had one store manager tell me they were redesigning them, I have 8 of these engines and they work PERFECT for my applications, I pump the primer 3 times & starts at FIRST pull, NONE of the engines have let me down using them weekly during grass cutting season, now IF I run the tanks completely dry it takes about 5 pumps of the primer. I am SOLD on these engines so much I was going to buy 9 at one time because I was afraid that the supply was going to be sketchy.
That mount right up? I got the 3 bolt pattern.
How is the engine holding up?
I just put one of these engines on my old 1995 Speeco splitter. Replaced the original 5hp Tecumseh that quit. (suspect timing/cam gear)

I just got a 173, installed it on splitter, fueled up added oin
, no start no run.
Got about 100 pulls over a few day, only farts n back fires,
And a broken recoil starter mecanisim.
And a almost broken finger and wrist, checked everthing
I give up.
Take it back wish I could help.

Yep removed it today boxed it back up going to bring it back tommarrow.
hf took it back,
Exchanged for engine number 2,
Farts with recoil snap back
Kept looking n figuring.
We need to carefully pul it over to listen for the sweet spot of the internal compression release to click.
Kept light pressure on cord n pulled it over,
Its been starting that way ever since.
Tie back the flywheel brake. It won't start until you do that. It's for the lawnmower safty bar on the lawnmower handle.
Gatta say KUDOS TO YOU!!!! My brother put the same engine on, yes, his Log Spliter. Then it set for about 2 years never having run. He, after my promptings....many....decided to 'fire it up' Well, he pulled, and pulled, and pulled...nothing. "have you checked the spark plug"? which rather pissed him off.....'hey, feel free to 'work your magic' anytime you feel like it, the tools are right over there'!! So today was see what I can do day. Checked the plug, no spark. Found out what and where the Magneto is and took it apart, cleaned, sanded the contacts, electrical taped a dicey wire cover put it all back together........nothing. ARGGGGGG! Just watched your Video.....ah....the lawn mower Kill Switch?!! Light bulb finely goes off over my head, not sure if it was more than a 40W but it went off. Stopped your Video at 5:54 a couple of times, went out and grabbed a pair of pliers and pulled that kill lever. Hmmmm yes, it moves. Wired it in the 'moved' position, pulled the cord and off it went running on the first pull. Set the throttle on high and split some 20" Dia Oak 'rounds' ALL THANKS TO YOUR VIDEO!! Thanks again!!!
Do those have a auto choke on it or does it have to be hooked up to a lever to disengage the choke?

I got the same engine coming for my log splitter, how did you setup the throttle control on this engine for a log splitter?
It is in the install video i made.
Picked up a new lever n cable, for mowers ,universal.
Shortened cable n looped it n mounted the metal lever to the snap on plastic air cleaner box cover. Smooth,
Hardware store j hook n a few washers n nuts to pull the brake n ground open.
Anyone know the shaft diameter on this engine? Specs say 7/8. That sounds pretty big.

great engine if you want to break your wrist/fingers. Has wicked kickback every few pulls. I tried 2 of these with same results, and after the fact I learned of many testimonials to this flaw. Harbor freight has theses on clearance and you cannot order one because they are undergoing a redesign - hmm wonder why. DO NOT BUY!!

I wonder if this engine would work with my Billy Goat Vacuum.
billy goat's need at least an 18hp vanguard Vtwin or go even bigger with the 23Hp and i promise you will never be disappointed. you can suck the shoe off your foot lolzzzz. never deal with clogged hose again.
Shaft too long. Bolt holes aren't threaded and don't match up. These are a few of my favorite things... edit, cut 1 inch off shaft. Drilled motor deck holes and tapped motor mount holes. Also there is a flywheel brake arm that must be tied back before it will start. That will be your kill switch as well. It works!

Ther about 3 through holes an 1 blind threaded going up in from the bottom
2 different lenth bolts supplied in the box,bag.
