    Badass! That shape of a blade is also fairly easy to sharpen. So many companies try to make their knives with all of these funky curves and everything, and some do work well, but the particular shape of this knife's blade is timeless.

    I would just like to note that I often watch these videos while crafting, so I'm not always watching the screen, though I listen. So I thoroughly enjoyed the bit from 2:48 to 3:00, out of context. :)

    I like the addition of the false edge towards the tip,not too long to just be labeled as "just being fancy" but prominent enough to be useful for prying and really sticking into things when you need it to.

    Always look forward to your reviews.
    No bullshit, no theatrics, and best of all you just show yourself using the knife exactly how it should be used...
    no chopping melons or bottles of water or cutting dead pigs in half (like a certain company does for their promos... chilly metal? Freezing iron? You know the one)
    Just you in the woods chopping sticks and stuff.

    Excellent shape, with practical features, very sturdy looking and durable, so if the sharpness issue isn't a huge concern, this looks like a good investment for someone in the market for an outdoors knife with utility. Good review, thank you.

    I think the fact that you get them for free makes the review more honest (in your case, some people will kiss ass to get more stuff for free) since you won't be trying to justify (to yourself or others) spending so much money on them. I notice that I often only focus on the good things in whatever I buy. Then later I start noticing the bad.

      That is what I thought, Skall is not one to beg people for free stuff :) He just always says that even though he got it for free, he is going to be unbiased. I think that having spent ones own money on something makes you biased toward the thing, unless it is really bad, and then you get mad at it. I have no problem trusting Skalls reviews :)

    Excellent blade profile, always hate kydex sheaths. Good forechoil, I agree about the jimping on the back. I'm surprised that the grips and flared pommel are comfortable, but it looks like he did a great job with the fitting and the smoothing of the G10. Cool knife.

    I wonder if Skallagrim has heard of Angel Swords. They're a Texas based company that makes amazing knives and swords. I was at a Ren-fair near Austin,Tx and they had knives that made paper fillets. They're also the holders of all the Japanese sword cutting records, (and IIRC they broke one record by over 2X).

    You should really try not forget any of the details and have the exact international prices. I know I can easily look them up if I want to but it would made for a more professional review and since you're getting the goodys for free, the makers deserve a high quality review. One question, do you keep what companies send for reviews or do you send them back?

    Hello Skallagrim. I would like to know how a sword like the zweihander, nodachi and montante could be effective in battle, and if possible please make a sparring video, or a 'deep' review about them. I mean... they're actually kinda oversized and I really wanna know how they could be properly used (especially the nodachi, as I can't imagine something like that being effective in battle lol). Thanks.

    Handle scales attached with handle scales! Seems reasonable

  • @Ragesauce
    @Ragesauce 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    A sharp edge works harder than a dull edge, and edge retention is extremely important in the wild if you have little means to sharpen it. What's good about this blade however, is that the material used should hold well against edge chipping, which is also very important as multiple chips will eventually kill the blade. I would hesitate to call this a survival knife, but I would say this is an excellent field knife.

    That choil along with the hole and jimping make a perfect breaking line/point. Bad idea to put all three almost in one line. Do some pull ups on that knife and if it breaks, it's pretty much guaranteed to break there.

    • @SimonsDiscoveries
      @SimonsDiscoveries 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ***** Sure. There's plenty of pictures of broken 1/4" knives such as ESEE or Becker. They seem to break just as easily as smaller, thinner blades. Quite often where the holes and narrow spots are. I suppose they need to be thicker to make up for greater length and resulting leverage.
      Edit:
      Unless of course you make it like a machete - out of 1055 to 1085 and temper it down to 52-55 HRC. Then it can be even longer and as thin as a mora 511. But you probably already know that :)

    you can maintain a convex edge using stones, just roll your wrist, or use a field strop to keep it from dulling so much. should be able to strop the knife back to full razor using a leather strop & black, then green compounds, or just green, but will take more time.

    Heavy and poor edge retention are a huge problem. Depending on the price, the maker may start to compete with Busse (tough market).

    If you haven't resharpened it yet, I'd be curious to see if just a little stropping will restore the edge. It's supposed to be good steel and that may be all it needs. I wouldn't expect a shaving edge like that to hold up to hard use with even the best steels, but I expected a bit better than that. Maybe the grind is slightly inappropriate? Like a 20 degree when it should be a 22.5

    It's a very beautiful knife. I can't really overly judge it on edge retention because almost all of the knives you've tested recently seem to end up in that same condition towards the end of your testing. I'm thinking that if you're going to spend that much on a knife then you should also invest in a way to sharpen it.

  • @Blake13thSeraphin

    I think that the edge retention is a problem. I'm not an expert but, isn't it indispensable for a survival knife? Like toughnes or durability.

    • @DropForgedSurvival
      @DropForgedSurvival 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Blake Seraphin For sure... With this design being so much larger and having incredible hard hitting power it does sometimes dull more quickly, however. The Grind, Geometry, and Steel used help minimize other critical failures such as chipping, rolling, etc.. always some form of a trade off with steels. However it is fairly easy to field sharpen after a hard day of use. I sharpen all my knives and tools weekly as a routine or ritual ( unless needed sooner ).
